It was unexpected of Oden to ask Whitebeard to let him join but anyways Whitebeard is also not some small fry so it's cool. I personally feel the back story is bit paced but it's fine as we'll get to see the drama soon.

I'm seriously hoping next chapter we learn who WB's first mate was/will be before Oden if Oden ends up becoming first mate. Because Marco was an apprentice at the time.
