We still don't know the circumstances of how blackbeard got a second fruit so assuming its because of the yami fruit isnt solid logic and you don't necessarily need to be at deaths door for awakening that's just how it happened for luffy. Im sure doffy, katakuri, and tesoro had different experiences. We just know that according to kaido your mind and body have to catch up to your devil fruit power
