I skipped straight from Alabasta to Water 7 and I understood everything, but that may not have been the best thing to do. Do whatever you want but probably don’t skip too many arcs

Try reading Manga. What I did was I read till basically the end of Pre-Timeskip, which only took me about a month or so then watched the anime normally skipping all filler episodes. (I stopped reading at Marineford because it was honestly PEAK and I just wanted to watch it.)
