English is mandated from Japanese middle to high school (equivalent of 7th-12th grade for Americans. Not a typo btw both their middle and high school are 3 years each).
Japanese people that haven’t practiced English outside of school tend to suck at speaking English, but they do have a decent ability to read and understand it.
Now, of course nonsense words like Raftel still mean nothing to them.
This chapter was insanely hype. We more or less got confirmation that Scopper and Rayleigh were the strongest people on Roger's crew back then. So, maybe Scopper will actually become relevant at some point.
I loved the clash between Oden and Roger as well as Roger and Whitebeard. After so long we are finally at the point where Garp, Whitebeard, and Roger were seemingly all at the same level at least as viewed by the community as a whole. Or at the very least it would be hard to argue otherwise.
The fact that the fight between Roger and Whitebeard went back and forth will hopefully get that "PK," phallus-shaped object out some people's mouths...
We got some more weird information about Blackbeard, apparently he didn't sleep the entire 3 days the WB Pirates and Roger Pirates fought according to Shanks and Buggy.
Overall, an amazing chapter with a lot of exposition. My only personal gripe was how Oden switched from WB to Roger. Though considering their personalities it does make sense. Logically, it's sound, but it just feels a bit off to me. I've also not been paying too much attention, so I can't tell exactly where we are in the timeline.
Oda maintains an insane schedule rumored to be 12+ hours a day to get out quality One Piece on a weekly basis.
Get off the man’s back, if he wants to take a break let him before he overworks himself to death into a bad health condition to where he produces One Piece even slower.
Also, some of these breaks are either Japanese holidays or the Shounen Jump magazine itself going on break (i.e. not specific to Oda or One Piece), so you can’t even put that on Oda.
Sorry, for the long-form response. This is actually my normal format, but since I've been busy with school I have rarely been able to really go in-depth as much as I'd prefer. However, I'm on Thanksgiving break atm, so I have more time than before..
To address you points on the damage capability of the Sweet Commadners I wasn't downplaying them, but how often would BM be sending her children to randomly wreck islands? Unlike Kaidou's crew, BM 's crew is very ordered. They pretty much chill at Whole Cake Island managing their respective towns until BM tells them to go crush someone who slighted her. Meanwhile, with the Best Pirates you get the reckless Jack and the mentally unstable Pleasures who would randomly attack islands for the sake of it.
Think back to when we first saw X Drake in the New World, someone from the Beast Pirates had went out and claimed that land. Meanwhile, BM seems to rarely claim land outside of Whole Cake Island. Even BM's temporary ownership over Fishman Island was due to Jinbei seeking her out to protect Fishman Island.
So, as for potential threat to the world government the calamities are much more likely to go around causing damage than the sweet commanders, who only seem to act when someone slights BM in some way (i.e. people not coming to the Tea Party, antagonizing her [some of the supernova], or stealing from her [Doflamingo]). Thus, the calamities would be perceived to be more of a threat in that sense.
Now, let's think about the gaping difference between Cracker and Katakuri, which we then should be able to apply to Jack and Katakuri later on.
Cracker as a Sweet Commander is rightly very formidable. At base his Cracker soldiers seem to be an entire tier above Urouge and Snack. Urouge couldn't even chip it and the same goes for Gear 3rd Luffy. They were doing absolutely zero damage and Cracker was actually dominating Gear 3rd Luffy. When Luffy used G4 Boundman against Cracker's biscuit soldier it was pretty much a war of attrition at that point. G4 Boundman wasn't fast enough to deal with Cracker's ability to continuously produce more biscuit soldiers. However, the biscuit soldiers that Luffy made contact with were very easily demolished. Cracker however has a pretty big weakness to water(moisture?) so Nami producing rain and Luffy's ability to eat unfathomable amounts of food allowed the fight to continue even when Luffy ran out of G4.
Eventually, Luffy regained G4 and Cracker was getting tired of the never-ending cycle of creating biscuit soldiers only to have them rained on and eaten. So, Cracker gets out of his biscuit soldier and takes Luffy head-on. Their speed is for the most part pretty comparable and earlier in the fight Cracker was able to cut G4 Boundman with his sword pretzel (by surprise), so offensively he was somewhat of a threat as well. However, Cracker was completely nullified by G4 Stuffed Tankman and one shot, by what I will assume was the Tankman version of King Kong Gun (i.e. the finisher for Tankman like Black mamba is for Snakeman).
Now, this same Luffy who had pretty comparable speed with Cracker himself, was completely capable of tearing through Cracker's maximum defense in the form of his biscuit soldiers, but was unable to outspeed the pace at which Cracker could produce said biscuits went on to fight Katakuri in pretty much the same state. Before Luffy started to learn future sight against Katakuri, there was literally a zero percent chance Luffy could've won that fight. Katakuri with Power Mochi was able to match G4 Boundman's strength with zero issue, Katakuri's speed was even outspeeding Snakeman for a while. And there is a point in the fight where Katakuri was able to completely dodge(phase through might be more accurate?) a barrage of punches from G4 Boundman. Luffy before learning future sight might as well been fodder. Not to mention the awakening which Luffy also had zero chance against.
Katakuri stomps Cracker with no issues. Strength-wise with power mochi Katakuri would be capable of breaking through Cracker's biscuit soldiers. Speed-wise he is vastly superior in both reaction time and actual overall speed. Luffy who before learning future sight had comparable speed to Cracker (some might say even better speed) and before beginning to learn future sight Luffy had no chance of even touching Katakuri (even with G4 Boundman) while Katakuri was able to maintain future sight (i.e. stay calm).
Not to mention the fact Katakuri's awakening would vastly improve his odds being that'd he'd be able to stick the biscuit soldiers in place to easily get at Cracker.
There is an immense gap between Cracker and Katakuri's battle prowess even though to someone like Lucci back in Enies Lobby they are both absolutely overwhelming monsters. Katakuri would sweep Cracker with no issues the same way he one-sidedly destroyed Luffy during the first half of their fight.
[There are other tactics available to Katakuri as well. Peerless donuts allows for greater and more versatile range than Luffy applied during the Cracker fight, and buzzcut mochi seems to be at least around the level of things like Black Mamba or even KKG.]
Now, let's go back to Jack, now that we've hopefully established Cracker gets absolutely trounced by Katakuri.
Jack was tied for the 3rd best stamina feat-wise and some absolutely insane defense when he first debuted. He went 5 days without rest back to back with Inu and Neko. However, not once during that long encounter did Jack deal any meaningful damage to Inu and Neko until he made use of Cesar's poison gas rendering Inu and Neko unable to fight. This speaks to either Jack's attack potency or Inu and Neko's defensive capability. Then in Wano we see Jack get wounded by Ashura Doji. While this doesn't indicate Ashura Doji is just miles better than Jack or anything, it does however set a precedent for his defense being breached.
Ashura Doji I wouldn't rate any higher than 2nd commander and honestly I place him around Jack (3rd commander level) personally. Jack traded pretty mcuh on the spot and was able to deal damage to Ashura Doji as well. Now, obviously a clash isn't the same thing as a full-on battle (otherwise Doflamingo and Aokiji would be equals), but this is telling. There was no real context in the scene making either one of them to be superior than the other.
Going back to Inu and Neko they were both fighting Jack, a 3rd commander, pretty evenly (even though the did were able to rest) and we know from Carrot's comment back in WCI they both have Sulong forms as well that would increase their power.
We have the comment made by Carrot making Inu and Shutenmaru out to seemingly be equals. Granted it's not like Carrot would know the full potential of Shutenmaru, but at least we have some idea that Shutenmaru is somehwat relative to Inu someone who was fighting on par with Jack earlier (granted with rest periods).
Now we even have more context on the Oden and Shutenmaru fight. While Oden it did take a lot of effort to quell Kuri that wasn't only because of Shutenmaru, but he quelled/defeated the entirety of Kuri who dared to challenge him on top of fighting Shutenmaru.
So far there is nothing to suggest or hint that Shutenmaru might be on par with 1st commanders (like Katakuri), so while we don't know exactly where Shutenmaru falls (2nd commander, 3rd commander, or somewhere in between) we do likely know he shouldn't be much if any better than a 2nd commander.
1st commanders are monsters among beasts. Marco is out there taking several admiral attacks including one named attack, Ben Beckman gets some pretty crazy wank from Oda as well as Kizaru to some degree. Katakuri, who we've already deconstructed somewhat. And then King who while we don't have any meaningful information on fights, King alone was enough to ward off the small BM group consisting of: Smoothie, Perospero, and Daifuku (some others as well just less important).
The goal of the above was to hopefully establish Shutenmaru should be considered no higher than 2nd commander (probably around 3rd commander imo) and he was actually able to injure Jack. We don't know much about Shutenmaru's speed, but I think it's safe to say Katakuri is vastly superior in that department.
Jack isn't particularly fast. In fact, during what we got to see of his battle with Neko, Neko was able to give multiple (a few) attacks for every one that Jack dished out. So, already we have someone outspeeding Jack. We have Inu who was going blow for blow and Shutenmaru who was actually able to trade damage with Jack. And there is currently no reason to believe any of them have speed comparable to Katakuri (the man who was completely capable of phasing through a barrage of G4 Boundman punches as well as even outspeed Snakeman for a little while.)
It'd be another thing if Jack had comparable defense to someone like Quee, who was taking hits from an albeit nerfed BM with no haki very well. Those same nerfed attacks from BM were almost able to one shot Hyogoro while he was using advanced armament (though he is old) but Luffy survived it in base. Regardless, that is a full-fledged yonkou's presumably unbridled physical strength. Queen took those hits with no real issue defensively speaking. Of course he realized he couldn't go head-to-head with her even in this nerfed state, so he devised a different solution.
If Jack had that kind of defense, insane attack power, or enough speed/observation haki to not get laughably outsped by a serious Katakuri, I could see Jack being somewhat close to Katakuri. But, he has none of those things: he was seemingly slower than Neko (not terribly, but still), he got damaged by Ashura Doji (someone who shouldn't be any higher than a 2nd commander from what we know so far), and he wasn't able to deal any meaningful damage to Neko or Inu when they were fighting.
Meanwhile, Katakuri has some insane speed and is unlikely to even get touched by any of Jack's attacks, he has things like Buzzcut Mochi as well as his trident to deal significant damage, and as for defense, his immense speed does that for him. Not getting hit in the first place is his defense.
If you have some other analysis for Jack being even close to Katakuri I'm all ears. And for clarity's sake I am referring to this statement you made: "Jack does have a higher bounty than Smoothie which means he is considered a bigger threat than her and since I haven't really seen a difference in strength between Big Mom's and Kaido's cannon fodder I see that as evidence of Jack being stronger than Smoothie and Cracker but weaker than Katakuri."
He's not even close to Katakuri. It's hard to say for Smoothie because we've seen so little of her actual abilities. But, personally (not really part of an analysis) I think she'd at least be able capable of doing what Shutenmaru did to Jack if not more.
Tbh, I don't know who would win against Cracker and Jack, but I'd bet on Jack due to the fact defensively Jack shouldn't have much of an issue against Cracker's biscuit soldiers. Those biscuit soldiers on their own didn't even have a remote chance of injuring G4 Boundman Luffy. While Jack is slower than Neko, being able to trade with Inu and Shutenmaru indicates he isn't an absolute snail. If Cracker ever decided to attack Jack outright (after a long war of attrition), I'd say Jack has the offensive power to take the win at that point. Of course, the most important trait when battling Cracker is either the ability to render his biscuit soldiers immobile/useless with something like a awakening or to outlast Cracker. Given Jack's stamina I'd say he could do that.
However, when considering Smoothie vs. Jack. Jack definitely isn't impenetrable defensively. Shutenmaru was able to breech his defenses and Smoothie who seems to specialize in overwhelming attack (as opposed to something like defense) I expect to also be capable of. At this point Jack's amazing stamina isn't really relevant if he's actually fighting someone who is going to be dealing constant damage to him. As opposed to Neko and Inu back in Zou who dealt no serious damage to Jack over the course of those 5 days. Smoothie vs. Jack probably wouldn't be a sweep (unlike Katakuri vs. Jack), but I would definitely give Smoothie the edge.
@Dimension Creator Oof, taking bounties as measures of power scaling is one of the literal worst things you can do Oven and Daifuku's bounty is 300 million, Snack's is 600 million, and Perospero is 700 million, yet none of them likely come to people like Sabo (sitting at a clean 600 million) and would likely lose pretty badly to Ace at Marineford (550 million).
To be honest those 4 on BMs crew I usually scale around the same (4th commander or right under 3rd commander).
Furthermore, you have Luffy's top fleet commanders which are pretty close to Zoro and Sanji. Cavendish and Sanji are tied at 330 million both 10 million higher than Zoro. Bartolomeo is sitting at 200 million and Sai at 210 million. All 3 of Luffy's top 3 fleet commanders are pretty close to Zoro and Sanji in bounty, but would all get absolutely demolished if they ever had to fight one of those two.
Then there is the fact Kaidou's calamities seem to literally be made for mass destruction and would definitely destroy an island on a whim. Queen's plague bullets and Jack's tendency to be reckless and go overboard. Meanwhile, while BMs children do destroy islands they only do it on her orders when someone slights BM in some way (i.e. not showing up to her tea party).
So, not only are bounties pretty unreliable as measures of power, but Kaidou's calamities are bigger threats because Kaidou isn't very structured. Meaning, Kaidou's pirate members are pretty much free to do whatever they want and the calamities have specialties that are literally designed to take out swaths of a population. Meanwhile, BM's kids strictly only act on her orders.
I'm not going to blame you if you were coming from a DBZ mindset where you could just look at a number and determine how strong a character was, but that is NOT how One Piece operates. Bounties are honestly mostly for the Strawhats, where after every arc or so their bounty increases and we begin to understand how our main character's notoriety is perceived throughout the One Piece world.
Just take a second and think about the Cracker fight with Nami and Luffy. Even with a counter (Nami) that fight went on for hours on end and Cracker was even able to cut G4. Keep in mind Cracker was an 860 million bounty, and Luffy pretty much needed help otherwise the fight would've taken even longer to finish. That same Luffy went up against Katakuri later in the arc with a bounty barely higher than Cracker's (1.056 billion) and was getting absolutely wrecked. Coming off beating Cracker, Luffy couldn't even be taken as a real threat during the first half of the Katakuri fight.
And now you're telling me Jack who is reckless enough to go up against a former fleet admiral, a current admiral, and a vice admiral legend in Tsuru, and get absolutely demolished (as most anyone would in that situation), as well as getting injured by Ashura Doji pretty easily is comparable to Katakuri. Their bounties only have a 56 million difference? But, in actuality I severely doubt Jack would even be able to land a hit Katakuri much less be anywhere near Katakuri in terms of battle prowess.
Also, what about poor Sabo who is sitting at 600 million, but is seemingly the one who injured Fujitora coming off of the Reverie? You're telling me he's weaker than all of BMs commanders and Kaidou's calamities? Definitely not.
The point is if you have some actual evidence for Jack being anywhere near Katakuri based on their fights and portrayal throughout the series I'll listen to it and promptly refute it. But, looking at numerical bounties isn't going to get you anywhere in One Piece power scaling.
Matchups are very important. Take Jinbei his bounty is 438 million I believe and yet he has a very good matchup against someone like Cracker with an 860 million bounty. Given what Jinbei was able to do to BM, and what he has been able to be shown to take (Akainu's magma back in Marineford) he should have a good chance. Unfortunately, that wasn't a very in-depth analysis, but I'm running out of time. But, I hope you were able to see my point.
So many other factors are at play: haki ability, devil fruit mastery, and battle traits (intelligence, versatility, stamina, defense, offence, and speed.) Bounties don't take all those factors into account. They are simply a measure of perceived threat by the World government. Not battle prowess, which while somewhat related definitely are not the same thing.
I think Ace 100% had the potential to become a yonkou given enough time. Usually, going under someone (as opposed to being your own captain) tends to put a cap on your success in the One Piece world. However, Whitebeard actually had plans of making Ace the PK and presumably would have had Ace take up the mantle as captain after WB eventually died if not for all the Blackbeard stuff.
Ace's potential was pretty insane. It took him at maximum 100 days to go from having no chance against a yonkou to causing some damage. That is unfathomable, Luffy couldn't even begin hurting BM and Kaidou coming off of Dressrosa and WCI respectively and besides BB (who has shown to be relatively poor with haki so far) I think the same would have went for any yonkou whether that be Shanks or Whitebeard.
Additionally, he had pretty good control of his fruit that was really shown when he was fighting Blackbeard. Once Ace stopped being a hardhead and decided to really learn how to implement haki properly, he would've easily reached at least 1st commander level. Most of what Ace learned concerning hak iwas instinctual, according to the Ace novels he first used armament by instinct when he was fighting a VC in Saboady right before Ace and his crew would go to the New World. Then his armament presumably got even better being that he was finally able to cause some damage to Whitebeard after 100 attempts to assassinate him. Unlike Luffy, Ace presumably never got a chance or at least made use his crewmates to learn haki in-depth. [Of course this is in large part due to the fact Oda hadn't fleshed out haki when Ace was directly relevant to the story.]
Even with all this said I am mostly referring to Ace's potential were he to continue living post-Marineford. Not everyone is Luffy and gets people to construct his foundation for haki and teaching them the advanced form on top of that. [Luffy and Sabo might be the only ones in the story tbh.] Given enough time Ace would have definitely become a yonkou (if BB didn't exist) like Kaidou and BM did eventually.
However, as far as how powerful was Ace at the time of his death, I'd say he was right on the cusp of 3rd commander level along with people like Cracker and Jack. 2nd commanders and people who I think could be 2nd commander level have shown too much for me to consider Ace a proper 2nd commander in terms of power despite his title. I won't mention Queen (since this is "in General"), but Jozu was actually able to damage Aokiji (even if it was off guard). Queen has shown some amazing stuff as well.
Then I don't think Ace having been 1st commander level should even be discussed in any serious manner. 1st commanders so far have some seriously broken traits that put them above everyone else in there crew so far save their captain. Katakuri has future sight and Marco has his broken DF. Sabo has possibly the final form of advanced armament in the form of Ryuusouken and now he has a DF on top of that. 1st commanders are monsters to everyone who isn't an admiral or a yonkou and Ace just wasn't that.
Depending on what you think of Vista you could rate Ace even lower to around Snack level. But, due to Ace not being a meathead (see his battle with BB) and being pretty versatile for my personal opinion I have him barely edging out a win over most any 3rd commander, but losing to a 2nd.
Ahh okay that makes a lot more sense than BM. And who knows maybe. She was the only other one to get dialogue besides Marco and WB on the crew...
Can someone clarify is that girl BM or am I losing my mind? Also, that clash at the end was so HYPE!!!! And baby Kawamatsu is pretty cute I must say.
I'm seriously hoping next chapter we learn who WB's first mate was/will be before Oden if Oden ends up becoming first mate. Because Marco was an apprentice at the time.
It was cool seeing Jozu and Vista. I'd have to take a little longer to figure out who the other ones were, but I got to go.
The anime itself? Idk depends on how Toei want to pace out scenes. The content in the anime though? Depends on the manga content. So, if you want a spoiler lmk, otherwise idk what to say. Hyping up your expectations will generally reduce the impact something has anyway, but to each their own.
The reason it has felt slow is likely because Toei has been padding scenes for longer runtime. But, pretty much everyone calls every beginning to an arc "slow," so you know there is that factor as well.
I don't think Lady Toki needs to be alive for Momo and company to still be in the future. She sent them 20 years into the future and then died. While it hasn't been revealed whether it's a passive or active fruit I'm pretty sure it's passive. Did you just expect Lady Toki has been without pause actively using her powers for 20 years straight yo keep Momo and company in the future? Because that seems like the even more unlikely scenario to me.
Meaning, I don't think she needs to be alive to allow Momo and company to stay in the future. She used her power to send them in the future, then died. I don't think there are any "aftereffects," at play here. Now, if things or people were coming from the past other than the original group she sent to the future, then I could understand some kind of argument there. However, as it stands there is no reason for me to assume she's alive.
If I remember correctly, her fruit was explained as not allowing any kind of backwards time travel, only forward.
If you want to be contrarian and proclaim she's alive that's cool. But, currently there is zero reason as to why she would be. Her power the ability to jump forward in time. Once she goes forward she can't go back. I assume that goes for whatever she sends into the future as well.
"It is impossible to travel into the past, meaning that all trips forward in time are irreversible. Otherwise, the user is affected by the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses" - Chapter 920
I have a similar problem with this as I do my with Oden still being alive. For one this would indicate either Lady Toki or Oden all but straight up abandoned Hiyori, which is unlikely. Lady Toki unlike Oden may not necessarily be obligated to save Wano, so I’ll leave it there.
I highly doubt either of Hiyori’s parents would abandon her for 20 years. Maybe if they sent all or half (Momo could get the other half) of the Scabbards to protect Hiyori, but even that wasn’t the case.
Lady Toki knew or at least predicted Kaidou’s and Orochi’s tyranny would last for at least 20 years. Subjugating your daughter through that while you travel through time is absolute insanity and unbefitting of the image Oda has crafted for Lady Toki so far.
Lady Toki used to travel through time often, but she met Oden and decided to finally settle down for once in her life. Then, her great love died. She then sent Momo into the future and told Kawamatsu to protect Hiyori. Then she finally decided to die instead of living on without her love, Oden.
By predicting either Lady Toki or Oden is still alive you either have to shift their characters into asshole of the century or introduce more amnesia nonsense like we already did with O-Lin and Sabo.
It’s another language, so I’m not trying to be an asshole or anything. But, the 10 you’re referring to would be “tou,” not “to”. Since everything else was perfect I though I’d mention it.
Not that one. The poneglyph where Luffy, Cobra, Robin; and beaten up Crocodile is canon though.
Roger’s crew disbanded 25 years before the current storyline and Roger was executed 24 years before the current storyline. There is an entire year gap where Roger’s actions would have been completely unknown to his crew. Additionally, judging from Rayleigh’s exposition in Sabaody it seems like not even Roger’s right hand kept in contact after disbanding.
Now, I’m not really against Roger’s crew knowing Roger wanted a kid. One of the more recent chapters seems to hint maybe that could have been common knowledge amongst the crew. However, once again no one except Garp and whoever Garp told would have known Roger’s kid was a boy let alone one East Blue.
Tbh, it’d be even more likely that Roger somehow kept this kid safe through his own means as opposed to entrusting the child to Garp.
One big big thing to note is both Rouge and unborn Ace were in South Blue even following Roger’s execution for over a year. If any of Roger’s crew were privy to that information they likely would have given Rouge and Ace shelter. Garp didn’t come for Ace until after Rouge gave birth.
Lastly, Roger had other options than Garp from the perspective of someone who hasn’t seen Roger for a year (i.e. Roger’s crewmates). Whitebeard is one such option.
This is the reason “foresight is always 20/20,” is a saying. Looking back, it’s “obvious,” or “easily deduced,” Roger entrusted his kid to Garp when you haven’t really taken into account all the factors going on during that time period.
Roger’s crew seemingly (judging from Rayleigh) had little knowledge of Roger’s actions and no contact since they disbanded. Roger seemingly didn’t reach out to any of his crew to take care of his kid and instead entrusted the child to Garp. Assuming Roger entrusted his child to someone else as opposed to simply ensuring his wife was safe Whitebeard, Roger’s other prominent rival, would be as good a guess as any. Being that Oden shifted crews and both Roger and WB had several run-ins as well, Roger most likely would’ve known WB’s lean towards family.
For me, I most likely would’ve assumed Roger actually made sure to secure his wife’s and unborn child’s protection before turning himself in.
That scene was actually filler content. Presumably, the people in charge of the anime (Toei) weren’t aware of the significance poneglyphs would play down the line.
Literally no one including Roger's crew knew where Roger's kid was or if it was even a boy or a girl except Garp and Rouge. Even past that Roger's kid was born in South Blue, why in the world would anyone be looking in East Blue for Roger's kid unless Shanks somehow knew Garp had custody of Roger's kid?
Now, it's possible Shanks ended up figuring out Ace was Roger's kid like Whitebeard did. Probably around the time when Shanks actually met Ace in that cave in the New World or started seeing Ace's name in the newspaper. But, definitely not 10 years before the start of the story when pretty much no one outside of that island would have known who Ace was.
If Shanks was actually looking for Roger's kid 12 years before the current story line then it's unlikely he's be looking in East Blue when everyone knew the last place Roger was sighted before turning himself in was South Blue.
This is why I mentioned idk why Shanks was in East Blue back then for such an extended period of time. Reasonable predictions might include: he liked Makino, for the adventure, or he was looking for something most likely to do with Blackbeard. This is Shanks after his initial encounter with Blackbeard where he was scarred and he's been the one warning everyone about Blackbeard before he became the threat that he is now. So, I think it's probably a reasonable idea whatever he was doing in East Blue had something to do with stopping Blackbeard.
However, the likability he was looking for Roger's offspring in East Blue is pretty slim in my opinion considering the circumstances of Ace's birth.
Oda has some villains where being evil is there entire identity. A good example is Stelly, there is nothing redeemable about him. He’s just a slime ball through and through. However, because of that instead of hating him I find it interesting or sometimes even hilarious when he does something slimy. Stelly wants power and if he gets it he’d just be another Charlos clone, abusing his power as he sees fit.
Those kinds of villains are very flat characters and serve no other purpose than being a strawman example of someone “bad,” who should be taken down. Now, those kinds of characters do have their place in some anime. Rakudai no Kishi did their version of that villain really nicely I think.
However, I generally prefer more complex villains that have a reason as to why they are “evil.” Doflamingo was definitely a heinous character, but he would protect or avenge those he considered his family no matter what. He’s a good example of being evil for evil’s sake.
I think the last character I hated from anime was Clementine from Overlord. I despise sadistic characters who can’t handle the pain themselves. And I love when they get taken down.
Tbh, most One Piece evil characters are written in such a way I don’t care that they are evil.
However, I feel like Arlong, but more likely the particular Celestial Dragon who owned Boa are some of the more realistically heinous characters.
I personally don't like Arlong (as a person/fishman) because he is a hypocrite that can’t learn new things. He was on a boat with a harmless human in the form of Koala where he stayed on guard the entire journey. Then, he struck a deal with the humans just to terrorize humans (as opposed to doing something helpful to his species). At least something like eradicating humans would have been less hypocritical.
And for that one celestial dragon, I have an issue with them kidnapping 3 girls, 12 and under and using them for entertainment.
Other than that things like that one Celestial Dragon shooting on kid Sabo or Akainu raging on a warpath and fisting Ace, or BB betraying the WB Pirates all go under my radar.
