Kaido explained that an awakening happens when the devil fruit user’s mind and body catches up to the goal of the devil fruit. In Egghead island we learn that each devil fruit was created with a wish. Kaido was only partially awakened. My assumption is the wish of Kaido’s devil fruit was to be invincible. Kaido’s body was caught up to the wish of his devil fruit, but in his mind he was still hoping someone would defeat him. The wish of Luffy’s fruit is to be free. In his mind, he already had freedom, which is why we can see the cloud effects surrounding his gear 4th forms, which are his partially awakened forms. His body, however, was not synced with his mind, so he had a time limit on his semi-awakened forms. When Luffy was killed by Kaido (yes, he was literally killed) his body got what it needed to awaken. Gear 5’s heartbeat seems to be what activates the form. Since Luffy never died before, and his heart never stopped beating before, him being killed essentially served as a “reboot” button for his heartbeat. So, Luffy would have never acquired gear 5 if he never died.

For the anime, i’d change the pacing and the weaker animation, as well as the repetitive sound effects, jarring cuts, and all the pointless reaction shots. I’d also make it adapt at least 2 chapters per episode which would shorten the show to around 500 episodes. I’d completely remove the recap from each episode and maybe make the openings shorter to the standard anime opening length (around 1:30). I’d also fix design inconsistencies like robin having blue eyes instead of brown and marco looking completely different when he first appeared.
For the manga/anime, i’d give chopper actual good moments post-timeskip and revert his brain point form to what it looked like when he was first introduced. chopper has become nothing but a mascot and he used to be one of my favorite characters when i was still newer to one piece. franky gets the same treatment a lot of the time, his last good moment was in dressrosa against señor pink. franky vs. page one was extremely underwhelming. I would try to get rid of the overused pervert jokes with sanji and brook because it’s just not funny anymore and seems tasteless.

The desire of Kaido’s fruit was to be invincible, but mentally Kaido always wanted to be beaten.
We know what a paramecia awakening looks like, where the user gains the ability to manipulate the environment around them as seen with Katakuri, Doffy, Kid, and Law. A zoan awakening amplifies the user’s original powers and can be recognized by flame clouds around the user’s body, as seen with Luffy, and maybe Kaido and Yamato. Now what would a logia awakening be? We have seen logia users with transformations like Enel and Ryokugyu. In Enel’s Amaru form, he appears to have some sort of cloth that resembles the smoke cloud of Luffy’s Snakeman and the flame cloud of Gear 5, but it does not appear to be the same, and that Enel could just be mimicking an awakening. My theory is that a logia awakening lets the user transform into a creature resembling a god of their respective element, which amplifies their logia abilities to a grander scale. In Enel’s Amaru form he still has about the same strength and power than in his normal form, he is simply just covering himself with lightning. If Enel were awakened, he would have definitely put up a better fight in that form and not have been one-shot by Luffy. I think Enel’s awakened form would obviously resemble Riajin, the Japanese god of thunder whereas Akainu’s awakening could possibly resemble Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes.

@Jacobi Wan it could be that only the hardening part is black, and that someone who learns the basics of buso haki can just always have it active as a passive (being able to attack logia users). On Dressrosa we see Luffy use armament haki on Trebol without his hands turning black.
How would turning into a massive dragon be useful on a daily basis?

Not until next year. The anime will likely be filler for a little while until the manga comes back. The anime likes to stay roughly a year and a few months behind the manga
They don’t have hybrid forms because you can’t be half human and half… human. Gear 5th would be Luffy’s transformed state while has base form would just be his normal state. Some Mythical Zoan users can still use their abilities in their base form like we see with Marco.
