Buccaneers are a nearly-extinct special race of humanoids taller than average humans but smaller than giants.[2][3][4] With the race considered to be lost in the midst of time,[5]Bartholomew Kuma is the last survivor of the race according to Jaygarcia Saturn.[3]
Buccaneers appear nearly identical to humans, although seemingly large-sized on average. Even so, they cannot be easily distinguished from otherwise tall humans without a blood test.[4]

Biology[]
Buccaneers carry the blood of the giants, suggesting they may be a mixed race.[4]
It is currently unclear whether a child between a buccaneer and a human is considered a "half-buccaneer" or not, as Bartholomew Kuma is only ever referred to as a "buccaneer" despite having a human mother.[4]
Inter-species Relationships[]
“
The buccaneer boy... Your only options are slavery and death... History itself chose them for you.
Buccaneers are said to have committed a great crime against the world in the past, due to which they are forced to hide from the World Government to avoid persecution. If discovered, a buccaneer and their family will be forced into slavery for the World Nobles or put to death.[3][4][6]
Due to the extreme persecution over the years, the buccaneers are now one of three races close to extinction, alongside the Lunarians and the Three-Eye Tribe.[7]
Overall Strength[]
Buccaneers are shown to possess great physical strength even as children and incredibly large durable bodies that can withstand massive degrees of duress and damage.[4]
Vegapunk implies that there is something other than physical strength that makes buccaneers special, which is seemingly related to the reason Kuma was able to act after his total shutdown switch was pressed.[8]
Beliefs[]
The legend of the Sun God Nika has been passed down in buccaneer folklore for many generations, as Nika is revered as a divine figure who will bring joy and freedom to the world as per buccaneer beliefs.[4]
Trivia[]
Buccaneers were a type of privateer or pirate active in the Caribbean Sea during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Before the term "buccaneer" became associated with piracy, it instead was used to refer to certain nomadic tribes of the Caribbean, after their specific methods of cooking hunted animals.
Despite not being biologically related to her adoptive father Bartholomew Kuma, Jewelry Bonney is able to gain a large and muscular physique resembling that of a buccaneer when using her Toshi Toshi no Mi's Distortion Future.[9]
