Short Summary[]

Ace begins his quest to take Whitebeard's life, growing closer to the Emperor's crew while living with them. As his respect for Whitebeard grows, Ace agrees to join the crew after his 100th failed attempt, scheduled for three months after his first.

Long Summary[]

Taking stock of his surroundings, Ace recalls his loss to Whitebeard. As he does so, Thatch notices that he's awoken, and welcomes him to the Moby Dick. He explains that the Spade Pirates are also onboard, having attempted to rescue Ace. While he declines to see them, considering himself not worthy, Ace questions whether they should leave him free, promising to take Whitebeard's head.

Later that night, Ace sneaks into Whitebeard's room while he sleeps, and attempts to stab him. However, instead, he is punched to the side and throw the wall, landing on the deck. He questions why the other pirates don't seem to care that he tried to kill their boss, and when Thatch notices that he can barely stand from the hit, he is taken to the infirmary. There, he finds Deuce helping the nurses, causing Ace to get depressed over his inability to beat Whitebeard all over again. He promises to defeat Whitebeard, and concludes that if he's going to be allowed on board, he's going to take every chance he gets to kill him.

As Ace continues to regularly attempt assassinations of Whitebeard, he begins to grow closer to the Whitebeard Pirates. He takes part in the crew's defensive duties, and participates in subjugating rival crews. During one of these battles, he begins to view his own weakness relative to other New World pirates; during another, he expands his knowledge of Haki with Thatch's help, as he gradually grows stronger.

After a battle against a Zoan-wielding captain, Ace, Thatch, and Teach sit on Foodvalten. They discuss various rumours, including one that Ace will formally join the crew if he fails to kill Whitebeard 100 times. Thatch reveals that he created that rumour, and that Ace is already at 46 attempts, before the trio go buy supplies and return to the Moby Dick. While they sail back, they discuss Devil Fruits, and the two older pirates bond over wanting the Suke Suke no Mi. Ace also learns of Whitebeard's charity to his hometown, as he contrasts the Emperor's reputation with his own childhood dreams. The next time he attacks Whitebeard, he stops using sneak attacks, battling him head-on instead.

On the day of Ace's 99th attempt, he makes effective use of his newly-acquired Observation Haki and his increased control over the Mera Mera no Mi, as the Whitebeard Pirates' members watch and cheer. By predicting Whitebeard's movements, he is able to surround him with moving flames, and he goes in for the kill; however, he is stopped by Whitebeard's Gura Gura no Mi, marking the Emperor's first use of his Devil Fruit during their battles. As Ace celebrates making him fight properly, he promises to overpower the Emperor next time, and falls backwards into the sea. Deuce jumps in after him, noting that he has one attempt left.

Ace later wakes up in the Moby Dick's infirmary, where he's being treated by Deuce and the nurses. Deuce compliments Ace for his most effective strategy to date, and notes his joy at fighting someone he truly respects. When Ace leaves the infirmary, he overhears Thatch asking Whitebeard to call a stalemate, due to the Emperor's declining health; however, Whitebeard refuses, arguing that nobody stays in their prime and that he refuses to abandon Ace's journey.

Finally, three months after Ace first began trying to take Whitebeard's life, the 100th duel began on Peak Ode Island.
