Template:Char boxSir Crocodile (サー・クロコダイル,Sā Kurokodairu?) is the former president of the secret criminal organization, Baroque Works, and the central antagonist of the Baroque Works Saga. He is one of the longest running primary villains of the series, as well as the first enemy to hand Luffy a complete and utter defeat. He is originally introduced as a Shichibukai, but later was stripped of his title after attempting to take control of the desert kingdom, Alabasta.
Thanks to Monkey D. Luffy, he managed to escape from Impel Down and went to Marineford to participate in the war, after that, he and Daz Bones decided to go to the New World.
Crocodile is a tall man with a wide chest, broad shoulders, muscular arms and legs, and a thick neck. He has pale skin and nape-length, deep black-purple hair which is kept neatly slicked back, though strands tend to fall in front of his face during battles. Crocodile has various battle wounds, most notably a long stitched scar above his nose that stretches across his face, as well as a missing left hand, which has been replaced with a large hook made from a tough gold alloy. He has deep set drooping eyes, framed by many wrinkles, and thin eyebrows that appear to be in a perpetual 'sad' position. Crocodile speaks with a deep, relaxed voice, and he is usually seen smoking a thick, buck cigar produced by his company.
His theme of dress is meant to convey the image of an Italian mafia boss. In his original appearance, Crocodile wore a bright orange, black-striped button up vest over a long-sleeve peach shirt, a blue scarf, dark brown suit pants and polished black shoes with gold buckles. He also wore a long, thick, dark gray pelted fur coat (two shades of green in manga and Movie 8) on his shoulders.
After he was incarcerated at Impel Down, he wore a striped prisoner uniform, like most other prisoners, yet he was permitted to keep his gold hook. After joining Luffy and Jinbe to save Ace, he donned a black shirt, a green scarf, dark grey slacks, and a black overcoat with tan fur trim. After the Battle of Marineford, he's seen sporting an attire which resembles the one from Alabasta greatly, consisting of a vest over a plain shirt, a scarf around his neck, suit pants, elegant shoes and a fur coat hanging from his back.
In all his appearances he wears a single gold hoop earring on his right ear, and usually has several golden rings with different colored gemstones on every finger except the ring finger for reason unknown. (Though in the anime version of the Alabasta arc, it was his middle finger that was bare. This has since been corrected in recent arcs.)
His animal theme is the crocodile. His name, the Bananawani he kept as pets and his large scar (which resembles a "crocodile's smile") are reflections of his theme.
In Volume 63 SBS Oda drew the Shichibukai as children. Crocodile is shown with fairly long hair, and missing his trademark scar and hook he gains in the future. He is wearing simple clothing with a large pistol slung on his belt.
Crocodile is confident in himself and in his abilities (Crocodile's confidence comes from his own skill and power. His great power is shown when he beats Luffy twice, almost killing him both times), and enjoys toying with his opponents, often smiling smugly when facing an opponent that he knows is weaker than him. However, due to his confidence, he seriously underestimated Luffy's willpower, which eventually led to his defeat.
His willingness to kill shows his pitiless nature and he will not think twice about sentencing another person to death. He is also very quick to anger if someone insults him in any way. This is seen when Sanji insults him over his Den Den Mushi. Crocodile comments that anyone who has ever insulted him, has been killed by him. This is also shown later in his first fight with Luffy where Luffy had called him stupid. He then bites his cigar in half and threatens to kill Robin for laughing at the comment.
However, he has a habit of insulting others and frequently uses the term 'worthless' to refer to the desperate struggles of his enemies. Although he has referred to many of his opponents' struggles as worthless in the past, he has not referred to his opponents' struggles since he first fought Luffy. He will usually insult others and generally say that they are not in his league; whether he's fighting a rookie or fighting a fellow Shichibukai (namely Donquixote Doflamingo who had a former bounty almost 300,000,000 higher than his own).
If Crocodile is extremely angry or annoyed with his victim, he will rarely kill them outright. He often leaves them to suffer until they slowly die. This proves to be a bad habit of his as it led to his defeat. In his first and second fight with Luffy, instead of killing him, Crocodile leaves Luffy to suffer. This allows Luffy to come back and finally defeat him. This habit and sheer luck itself are the reasons Luffy lived through any of his fights with Crocodile. This also led to Galdino (Mr. 3) surviving the attempt by Crocodile to feed him to the Bananawani.
Crocodile shows no concern for any of his subordinates. He is fully willing to sacrifice them to achieve his ambitions (such as Operation Utopia, where the entire Baroque Works would have been killed by the resulting cannon blast), or if they insult or fail him (such as Mr. 3 and Nico Robin did). He felt no true attachments to these people and only views them as pawns. However, the few that are strong earn his respect. The prime example is Mr. 1, whom Crocodile went out of his way to rescue from his cell.
He also lacks almost any code of honor and does not see the point in offering those who are about to die a chance of dying honorably.[1] One of the few signs of honor he displayed at all was in his third battle with Luffy. He states that Luffy deserves an honorable death from his venomous hook. However, due to the situation at the time of battle, this could be considered more as an act of cruelty than honor. Although, it's also possible that due to the fact that he almost never fights with his poison hook, it is a tribute to Luffy's tenacity, as he stated himself. Another example of his odd sense of honor is seen when Whitebeard was injured by Squard. Crocodile refused to fight him in his weakened state. Later, he even saves Ace's life. He also saves Mr. 1 and Luffy from Mihawk. Nevertheless, he says 'that he just does not want the Marines to get their way.'
Crocodile has shown to be extremely cynical and condescending. He also displays complete disregard of the romantic pirate lifestyle, stating that all the values that the status Pirate King once had symbolized are worthless to him. He places more importance in military power. Crocodile believes that only ignorant fools declare their grandiose dreams. Several times he refers to trust and faith in others as idiotic. He has stated that he has done away with countless people similar to that. He goes so far as to deride those who fight for others, making their defeats all the more harsh. By his own admission, he confesses that he is not always rational.
He may very well have been a happy, carefree person once. Crocodile and Luffy even shared the same dream. Despite this, his time in the Grand Line has corrupted him and jaded him, causing him to turn into the cruel person he now is. Conjointly his time in the Grand Line caused him to repudiate his dream.
Apparently, after losing to Luffy and being stripped of his Shichibukai title, Crocodile lost interest in the outside world. This caused him to not escape with the rest of his subordinates during the breakout, and eventually to his transfer to Impel Down. His only motivation to leave Impel Down was for a chance to eradicate Whitebeard.
In addition he seems to have mellowed out a small amount since his defeat. He does seem more willing to assist others (when he offers to help Luffy escape from Impel Down). He will even accept help from others. All in all, it was because the help from others benefited him. Before he incarcerated in Impel Down, he did not care if his allies were going to get killed. He might have even killed them himself. Though, in Impel Down, he goes back to help his allies as they were being decimated by the Demon Guards.
He has complete and utter lack of fear and doubt. He is often very composed, even when facing fearsome opponents like Whitebeard, Dracule Mihawk and Akainu. He rarely loses his temper (one of these occasions would end up costing him, leading toward his final defeat in Alabasta). Upon his capture, he simply disregarded the notion of escaping simply because he did not feel like it. Similarly, he smiled at the news that he was to be sent to Impel Down, and was apathetic during his imprisonment. Crocodile is, in fact, one of the very few prisoners seen completely unaffected by the tortures and conditions of Impel Down. He is also the only one who appears to be enjoying himself (he is initially seen smiling and mocking his fellow prisoners). Crocodile says that he was in Impel Down because he chooses to stay. He ultimately decided to leave only because of the chance to kill Whitebeard. Crocodile appears to act largely on whims and selfish desires; he simply goes with the flow.
In spite of this, recent revelations reveal he may not be as heartless as he lets on. During the war, he goes beyond his personal agenda several times to save his allies' lives. He not only prevents Ace from execution, but saves both Mr. 1 and Luffy from being killed by Mihawk, and prevented Akainu from cornering Luffy and Jinbe as they desperately tried to escape from the admiral's onslaught. He claims the motive for his recent actions is that the Marines cannot keep doing whatever they want. He has recently shown himself to be very adventurous, preparing to journey to the New World, following the war.
Crocodile has a Laughter Style that starts with "Ku" (i.e. Kuhahahaha!), and also tends to laugh at a much slower pace.
Relationships
Crew
His relationship with his "employees" in regards to the grand scale of Baroque Works, is virtually non-existent. Especially as his identity was the only one shrouded in complete mystery to all but Nico Robin. This would imply a prior lack of trust to others at least in the "Shichibukai Crocodile".
He also did not refrain from acts of cruelty towards the other Baroque Works Agents under his employment, especially those who failed him, such as when he feed Mr. 3 to his Bananawani. However unlike previous villains such as Kuro, he does not harm subordinates for no reason, he strikes out at them if they fail or if they betray him.
Crocodile's connection to Robin was a strictly business-related one; he did not consider her a friend, but only as a tool for his own ambitions. Although sheltering her from the authorities in exchange for her services, he never once showed her compassion; she was just expected to follow orders. He held no pity for her when she failed to deliver Pluton and did not think twice about striking her, although he did admit she had been a beneficial partner to him moments beforehand.
Despite his cruelty towards his subordinates, Crocodile still manages to get some level of loyalty out of them after his defeat. This is demonstrated in Miss Goldenweek's attempt to save him and the other Baroque Works agents, along with Mr.1 staying with him in prison. He later rewards this loyalty, by releasing Mr. 1 from his cell after he escaped from his own. Then again, by asking him to join him once more, when Crocodile said he was going to the New World.
Allies
Monkey D. Luffy
After coming across him in Level 6 of Impel Down, Luffy reluctantly freed him after being persuaded by Emporio Ivankov. During the escape, Crocodile set free Mr. 1, who had been caged in Level 4. After the escape, Crocodile made his intention of taking Whitebeard's head clear, upon which he immediately acted on as soon as he arrived in Marineford.
Even though he suffered defeat at the hands of Luffy, he does not seem to hold a grudge against him and was even willing to offer him assistance in breaking out of Impel Down. During the Battle of Marineford, Crocodile fought on his own side, aligning himself with no one, and Mr. 1 loyally followed suit. During the course of the battle, he fought Luffy's allies, the Whitebeard Pirates, but then helped save Ace and even Luffy himself, claiming that he did it only because he did not want the Marines to have their way. As such, Mr. 1 also helped protect Luffy against Dracule Mihawk. He also helped Jinbe and Luffy by blasting them away from Akainu because he "did not want Akainu to get his way anymore than he already had". After the battle, Crocodile and Mr. 1 healed their wounds on an island in the Grand Line, deciding to enter the New World.
Shichibukai
While he is not seen interacting with many of the Shichibukai, he does not show much concern with those he actually interacts with. When dealing with them he is apparently indifferent, although if they irritate him he is not afraid to fight his former colleagues.
Jinbe
Among his former colleagues, the Shichibukai, Crocodile seems to have a negative past relationship with Jinbe, who was notably furious to know Crocodile was in a cell adjacent to his at Impel Down. Upon their release, Jinbe told Crocodile to leave Whitebeard alone. However, Crocodile's only response was asking him if he wanted to fight. In the late stages of the Battle of Marineford, Crocodile helps Jinbe and Luffy escape from Akainu.
Boa Hancock
Crocodile was unresponsive to Boa Hancock's arrival, nor did she look at him, suggesting they may not know each other well. However, he is one of the few people to be able to resist her beauty.
Marshall D. Teach
Crocodile spoke briefly with Blackbeard in Impel Down, surprised he was able to harm Luffy. He asked why he was so eager to give up his Shichibukai status. He stated he did not care to hear any of his schemes offending Blackbeard, calling him short on manners. When Blackbeard arrived at Marineford, killed Whitebeard, and took his power, Crocodile was seen unphased by his bold move, despite having been cheated of taking Whitebeard's head for himself.
Crocodile also seems to know Donquixote Doflamingo, as they talked as though they knew each other before. While Crocodile threatened to kill Doflamingo for intruding in his business and mocking him, Doflamingo was willing to offer a partnership to take down Jozu. He however laughs at Doflamingo's offer and attacks both Jozu and Doflamingo. Later, Doflamingo cuts off Crocodile's head, saying he will become jealous if Crocodile allies with Whitebeard yet refuses his own alliance proposal. Crocodile simply says that he is not allied with anyone and the two are seen clashing.
Dracule Mihawk
Daz Bones is shown saving Luffy from Mihawk on Crocodile's orders; however he cannot hold his ground against Mihawk's attack for very long. When Mihawk is about to finish him off, Crocodile himself intervenes to prevent his former colleague from taking any further damage. Despite Mihawk being the greatest swordsman in the World, Crocodile still speaks down to him, telling him to watch out since he's in a bad mood.
Enemies
Arabasta Kingdom
Nefertari Vivi
Crocodile is an enemy of Alabasta because of his attempt to conquer the country. He is especially on bad terms with Vivi for the chaos and crimes he committed towards her father and country. Vivi is an enemy of the crime syndicate Baroque Works; she holds extreme hate for their leader Crocodile for the chaos and death he caused in her country. On multiple occasions she has stated that she wished that he would either be killed or she would kill him.
Nefertari Cobra
Cobra was first seen expressing his gratitude for Crocodile defeating some pirates that tried to raid Nanohana, not knowing of Crocodile's true nature. Soon afterwards, Vivi sent a letter to him, revealing the truth about the rebellion. Crocodile had Cobra brought to him and demanded to know the location of Pluton. Crocodile had Cobra lead Miss All Sunday to the Alabasta Poneglyph to gather information about Pluton. He was willing to face death to prevent Crocodile from seizing the throne. When Luffy arrived there and fought against Crocodile one last time, Cobra witnessed the battle, and was amazed by Luffy's finishing attack that punched Crocodile through bedrock.
Chaka
During Crocodile's attack on the kingdom, he left to attack him. Because of Crocodile's actions and lack of compassion and honor, which forced his former men to die without getting the chance to die honorably in battle, Chaka was angered to the point that he attacked Crocodile out of rage, but his reasons were also backed by an attempt to protect Vivi and Kohza, as well as buy them time to put an end to the battle - but despite his efforts, he was easily defeated.
Straw Hat Pirates
He was a major enemy of the Straw Hats and his defeat at their hands is considered one of their greatest achievements. Starting from Whiskey Peak, Luffy and his crew became targets of Crocodile and his organization, Baroque Works. When the Straw Hats finally reach Alabasta, the crew struggled to foil Crocodile's scheme all for the sake of their friend, Princess Vivi.
Emporio Ivankov
He and Crocodile apparently met before, when Crocodile was still a rookie. Ivankov found out a precious weakness of Crocodile's, which he uses to blackmail Crocodile to ensure that he would not try to betray the escape party.
Edward Newgate
He also has a grudge against Whitebeard. Although not fully explained, he apparently was defeated by Whitebeard in the past, and commented on how he wished to go and battle Whitebeard himself so he could kill him. When Squard believed Akainu's deceptions that Whitebeard had betrayed his allies to save his own crew, Crocodile was disgusted at how weak Whitebeard had become.
World Government
As of the end of Baroque Works he is now an enemy of the Marines and the World Government for potentially causing a rift to form in the balance of the 3 Great Powers of the world. Crocodile abused the privilege of being no longer monitored so closely to build himself a large and powerful covert organization. Crocodile's actions in Alabasta left the World Government with few options other than his dismissal, although in fact Luffy dealt with him (and his bounty was raised for that). He invaded Marineford with Monkey D. Luffy and Jinbe.
Sengoku thought that he could use this hatred to his advantage against Whitebeard during the war. While Crocodile had his desire to take Whitebeard's head, he also wanted to keep the Marines from having their way as shown when he saved Ace from the first execution attempt much to Sengoku's surprise. Even though he had been robbed of his revenge against Whitebeard, he continued to be an enemy of the Marines as he saved Luffy and Jinbe from Admiral Akainu and sided with the Whitebeard Pirates.
Abilities and Powers
Crocodile is extremely knowledgeable and cunning (one of the most knowledgeable individuals introduced), which is apparent from his ability to mastermind Baroque Works while keeping the World Government completely in the dark about what he was doing and making himself a hero in the eyes of the people. He is also skilled at making flawless plans and noticing things that most other people would not. He can deduce a correct conclusion from nearly no information (e.g. seeing the white wrappings on the Straw Hats arm and almost instantly figuring out it was a safeguard against Mr. 2's infiltration).
He seems to have a better understanding of Devil Fruits than most people, as evidenced by his mastery of his Logia-type powers. This is also seen when he revealed that the Demon Guards were actually "Awakened" Zoan fruit users while other people were unaware that they were even Devil Fruit users. He is also the only known Shichibukai who knows about the Void Century and Ancient Weapons, forbidden knowledge that most others are not even aware of, even amongst the other Shichibukai. To this end, he knows the true value and reason of Nico Robin's high bounty.
As a former Shichibukai, Crocodile is a very powerful individual. He was the Shichibukai with the second lowest bounty at the time (81 million Beri), Hancock having the lowest, and they are likely to be the only ones known to have a bounty of less than 100,000,000 (excluding Blackbeard), although had his bounty represented his threat level at the time he met Luffy, it would have more than doubled and broken the 160,000,000 mark.
Indeed, when Crocodile was stripped of his Shichibukai status and was transferred to Impel Down, he was placed in Level 6, where the world's absolute worst criminals are kept. He is also one of the fewpeople to be able to take a "baptizing" in boiling water in Impel Down without flinching, which is considered an impressive feat.
While Luffy was unable to retaliate against Mihawk and was forced to only avoid his attacks, Crocodile intercepted Mihawk's attack without seeming to be worried at all about facing an opponent as strong as Mihawk, and even talked down to him, which may be due to the fact that swords are virtually useless against Logia-users like him. He seemed to be able to clash equally with Doflamingo, and was uninjured after confronting both Shichibukai. Crocodile was even able to battle Admiral Akainu and appear completely unharmed afterwards.
Despite his powers being of the Logia-type, which allows him to turn into sand to avoid injuries, he has a great amount of stamina and endurance. He was able to take a serious beating from Luffy in their third battle while he delivered attacks of his own, as well as take a direct strike from the diamond form of Jozu with only slight damage.
He defeated Luffy no less than twice before he was eventually defeated. In fact, if it were not for a matter of luck and several helpers, Luffy would have been killed in all three battles: either from the stab in his body (first fight), dehydration (second fight), or poisoning (third fight). Moreover, if Luffy's blood had not served as a way to nullify Crocodile's Logia-Type defense, and if Robin had not supplied Luffy with the antidote to his hook's poison, the third battle would have effectively favored Crocodile as well.
He mastered the Devil Fruit Suna Suna no Mi to the point of perfection where he can turn into sand reflexively if attacked. This ability was proven true when Doflamingo cut his head off while he was distracted. While in a desert area, his powers make him nearly invincible. Crocodile has the ability to create huge sand storms, make multiple bladed weapons out of sand, and create quicksand. He can also suck all the moisture out of any object, living or non-living, by placing his right hand on them. This ability makes him able to utterly destroy his surroundings.
Weapons
Crocodile's Hook
In addition to being one of the few characters shown to have complete mastery over their Devil Fruit, Crocodile is also formidable in hand-to-hand combat. He fought using only his hook for most of his third match with Luffy, and only resorted to his Devil Fruit powers near the end when things weren't going in his favor (not to mention his hook had been broken by Luffy). The hook is made mostly out of a golden alloy (which makes it resistant to corrosion) that is extremely tough and resilient, as shown when it took no visible damage from the Kokuto Yoru when Crocodile defended Daz Bones from one of Mihawk's attacks.
The golden part of the hook is hollow and can be taken off to expose a poisonous hook hidden inside of it. This part of the hook has a powerful scorpion venom, which is strong enough to melt through rock and kill anyone with the effect of a single slash. In the unlikely event that this hook becomes damaged, there is a knife hidden underneath that can be used in its place. The hook can also serve at times as an improvised mace-like weapon of sorts, evident when Crocodile merely slammed Luffy into a wall via smashing him with the hook.
During his incarceration in both a regular prison and Impel Down, Crocodile was permitted to keep his hook, despite it being a potential weapon, lending credence to the assumption that the hook is a prosthesis rather than a bizarre gauntlet.
22 years before the start of the storyline, Crocodile witnessed the execution of Gol D. Roger at Loguetown.[2]
It can be assumed that he received both the scar on his face and the amputation of his hand before eating the Logia type Suna Suna no Mi, though he may also have been attacked after consumption through means of Haki.
Crocodile's dream was to become the Pirate King, suggesting that he was like Luffy once. He once went to the New World, and grew adapted to the place's erratic environment. As time went by, though, he grew in power and experience, and lost sight of the importance of dreams or trust in other people. His vast amount of experience later helped him earn a spot as one of the Shichibukai. At some point, either before he became one of the Shichibukai or after, Crocodile came to let go of his dream of being the Pirate King, and, after learning of a weapon called Pluton, changed his focus and became very interested in it. This gave him the desire to create an organization called Baroque Works.
During his time as a rookie, he had crossed paths with Emporio Ivankov, resulting in Ivankov gaining insight on Crocodile's precious weakness. The nature of their relationship, and the aforementioned weakness is still unknown. At some point in his life, he was defeated by Whitebeard. This gave birth to a strong desire to take the elder man's head. This desire to kill Whitebeard is what gave him enough motivation to leave his cell in Impel Down when given the opportunity.
The Birth of Baroque Works
Crocodile secretly started a mysterious group, called Baroque Works. Being careful not to attract too much attention to himself, he gathered some of the best bounty hunters in the world, and gave them code names based on power. His plan the whole time was to capture Alabasta and read the Poneglyph there to find the ancient weapon, Pluton, and gain military power.
It is known that he found Nico Robin at the age of 24, and made her his assistant by arranging a deal with her. He would protect her and give her sanctuary, and she could be his partner. In return Robin would decipher the Poneglyph and find the location of Pluton.
Baroque Works Saga
Call from the Boss
Mr. 0 (referred to by other parties as Crocodile) gives Mr.3 a call. However, Sanji picks it up, as Mr.3 is defeated and is in Mr.3’s candle house. Understanding that this conversation was not meant for him, and that an enemy is on the other side of the line, he lies to the Shichibukai by pretending to be Mr. 3, claiming to have killed everyone. However, Crocodile has sent the Unluckies to Little Garden in order to give an Eternal Pose to Mr. 3. At that moment, Sanji spots them looking in the window. They start to attack Sanji and he subdues them, but the noise made Mr. 0 suspicious. Sanji pretended that he had to give the Straw Hats a final blow. However, Crocodile asks Miss All Sunday to send Mr. 2 to Little Garden in order to kill Mr. 3 for lying to him.
In Alabasta, the Shichibukai Crocodile is seen as a hero. Later some pirates, Puppu and his crew made a grave mistake in attempting to steal from a port city in Alabasta which was under the protection of Crocodile. Puppu insulted Crocodile for being a "government dog", and then when the Shichibukai jumped off of the building to greet the crew, Puppu and his crew impaled Crocodile with all their blades. Thinking that he had won, Puppu's mockery turned to horror when Crocodile created a sandstorm to drain the water content from Puppu and his crew's bodies. They most likely died from severe dehydration, as Crocodile was carrying their corpses out of town after the clash.
Much later on, Crocodile assembles a meeting with all of his Officer Agents at Rain Dinners marking the first time they know the true identity of their boss. They are told the goal of the Baroque Works, their final mission and their respective parts in overthrowing Alabasta.
An old face interrupts Baroque Works meeting. It is no other than Mr. 3, who snuck after the other members from Spiders Cafe. He came to be given another chance to defeat the Straw Hats. Crocodile is certainly surprised by this revelation since, after the call from Little Garden, he assumed all of the Straw Hat Pirates and Vivi were dead (he was not aware that it was Sanji who answered the call). Mr. 2 confirms that the Straw Hat Pirates and Vivi are alive since he met them on the way to Alabasta. With the help of his power, they are able to make pictures of the Straw Hats (omitting Sanji), and start to take counter measures so that they can prevent Vivi from meeting with the rebel leader, Kohza. Disappointed with Mr. 3, instead of giving him a second chance, Crocodile dries him up and feeds him to his Bananawani. The Officer Agents all get pictures of Vivi and the Straw Hat crew (excluding Sanji) with the help of Bon Kurei's abilities and are given the order to hunt them down (excluding Chopper as Crocodile believed he was the Straw Hats' pet).
Luffy and his group pressed forward to confront the Shichibukai. Upon arriving at Rainbase, Luffy and Usopp were sent by the rest to ask for some much needed water after much journeying in the desert island. However, upon finding water in a bar, the two accidentally encountered Smoker and Tashigi. Soon enough, another large commotion was caused with Luffy and his crew being chased all around by the Marines. Regardless of the commotion however, Luffy and some of his crew managed to escape from the pursuing Marines and headed into Crocodile's casino, Rain Dinners. As they were running around, Luffy and those with him were tricked into falling through a trap door by the casino. Having fallen for the trick, Luffy and the others, including Smoker, found themselves trapped in a seastone cage. As they were pondering their current predicament, they were greeted by Crocodile.
Having finally met the one who orchestrated the whole mess in Alabasta, Luffy and the others with him were unable to do get at Crocodile because of the cage they were in. As the situation developed with Vivi being brought before Crocodile by Miss All Sunday. She can not control herself at the sight of her enemy and tries to attack him. But she is powerless against the sand man who ate the Suna Suna no Mi. In front of a desperate princess and her imprisoned friends, Crocodile announces the beginning of his plan in order to destroy Alabasta: Utopia starts at 7 o clock. Luffy and the rest learn of Crocodile's awful master plan as he mockingly explained it before them. As it goes further, Luffy and the others find themselves being placed in a little game the Shichibukai decided to challenge Vivi in.
Crocodile takes a lot of pleasure to explain his mischievous plan which he has prepared over so long time. Vivi barely able to move does not give up and still think she can counter the Shichibukai. Amused by this pathetic attempt, Crocodile tells her that he and Miss All Sunday are about to meet her father. He then show her the key of the imprisoned Straw Hat cage but throws it into a pull full of ferocious Bananawani, putting the princess in front of a difficult choice, saving her father, her people or her friends. Explaining further that he deciding to self destruct the room they were in, Crocodile presented before Vivi in front of Luffy and the rest, the choice between getting to Alubarna in time or saving Luffy and those with him before the room completely floods. As Crocodile was explaining this challenge to Vivi, Luffy overheard Toto being mentioned by the Shichibukai and soon learned that it was Crocodile that was causing the sandstorms that plagued Yuba.
Before leaving, Crocodile explains Vivi the solutions she has got: either she tries to reach the rebels which is impossible in the time that remain or she tries to save her friend which will also be very hard because he throw the key of the cell into the Bananawani pool where one of them ate it. Moreover the building will self destruct in a short time. To make her despair even more, he reveals that he was the responsible of the sandstorm that came one after the others to Yuba oasis and mock Toto's stupidity. This makes Luffy full of anger, he beg Vivi to help them so that he can beat Crocodile. However, the destruction mechanism made the water level in the Bananawani pool increase. They escape of their place one after the other and start to hunt Vivi who barely escape these powerful animals. Meanwhile Crocodile receives a weird phone call from the snail phone he uses to contact Billions. The voice and the speech of the person speaking reminds of previous conversation. Sanji, nicknamed as Mr. Prince, fools Crocodile by letting him go outside of the casino by pretending to be dead. When Crocodile see that all his Millions have been beaten by the mysterious Mr. Prince he run after him but it is only Chopper disguised.
Ms. All Sunday asks what if the Straw Hat Pirates already found the key, and Crocodile answers by saying that the key was a fake in the first place and he has the real one. By the time Crocodile arrives at the room, the cage is swinging open underwater, while beat Bananawanis and a beat-up Mr. 3 floats in the water with a piece of paper on him that says "See ya shitty Croc - Mr Prince" on it, to Crocodile's anger.
Deathmatch: Round 1 and Round 2
Later in the desert, Luffy saved Vivi from Crocodile's Hook but ends separated from the others. Vivi is worried about him but the Straw Hat reassures her: Luffy will win this battle and they will stop the rebellion and retrieve each others in Alubarna. Luffy is now facing Crocodile and Miss All Sunday. The Shichibukai starts to be annoyed of Luffy interfering with his plan. The Straw Hat captain tells him that, since Vivi does not want anyone to die and that she will rather die herself than surrender, he has no choice but to beat him. Crocodile more and more pissed with Luffy's attitude gives him three minutes to try to fight him, after that he will not play anymore. Crocodile creates a giant hole of quicksand, which surprises Luffy. Luffy escapes the quicksand and tries to attack Crocodile several times, but Crocodile is unaffected. Crocodile attacks Luffy and makes his hand wither with his power, which makes Luffy panic. Luffy remembers the water Toto gives him and revives himself, yelling that Toto stated Yuba would never lose to sand. Luffy uses a new technique that probably comes from Wapol and eats the top half of Crocodile, which enrages him. Crocodile tells Luffy to die along with Yuba, and creates a sand twister.
Crocodile tells Luffy his intentions on sending this sandstorm to Yuba, which enrages Luffy. Luffy tries to stop Crocodile, but gets stabbed by Crocodile's hook. Crocodile tells Luffy that rookies like him are swarming all over the Grand Line. Crocodile tells Luffy about how everything would go his way, not Luffy's. We see now that Crocodile had stabbed right through Luffy's water bottle around his neck into Luffy. While the water from Luffy's bottle drips onto Crocodile's arm, Luffy suddenly grabs Crocodile's arm and breaks it, half dead. Crocodile is surprised that Luffy is still alive and throws him into the quicksand and Luffy falls deeper and deeper into it.
Later, Vivi arrives at the palace and gives order for the Royal Army to blow up the palace in order to get everyone's attention, but is stopped by Crocodile. At the castle, Miss All Sunday prevents the guards from helping the King. This gives time to Crocodile to make Vivi despair by telling her Luffy is dead and ask Cobra about is true motive: the search of Pluton. At the castle, Crocodile explains that he needs a weapon to establish his military power and be able to counter the World Government forces. Hence, he is searching for ancient weapon Pluton which is hidden somewhere in Alabasta. It is supposed to be one of the most powerful ever made. To find it Crocodile is searching for a place containing "true history". So as to convince Cobra to help him, Crocodile reveals his last treacherous trump card: a bomb will explode in 30 minutes, killing both rebels and royal guards all together. The Tsumegeri Guards come to save the king. They try to kill Crocodile by drinking Hero water. With their great strength they attack Crocodile, but he avoids the attack by turning into sand. He doesn’t even give them the chance to approach him. The Tsumegeri Guards die as an after effect and then Chaka attacks Crocodile, revealing his Devil Fruit powers. Then Crocodile defeats Chaka.
Kohza wants to warn the city but is stopped by Vivi, who states that it will create a panic. The Royal Army raises the white flag, with Kohza in front, but he is shot down by a double agent in the Royal Army, provoking the rebels. A battle starts on the palace plaza and Vivi watches in horror. Crocodile proceeds to throw Vivi off a palace wall, but she is saved by Luffy who came in flying on Pell's back. Vivi meets the rest of the Straw Hats on the foot of the wall and goes to search for the bomb with them and Pell.
During his previous fight, Luffy noticed that water made Crocodile unable to turn into sand as he and the water barrel that Toto gave were pierced by Crocodile's hook. Realizing this, he brought a huge barrel of water to aid him in his rematch against the Shichibukai. But as Luffy fought Crocodile again, he soon realized that his barrel of water could easily be jeopardized. Figuring this out, Luffy decided to switch tactics by drinking all of his water and storing it within himself, essentially become what he dubbed "Mizu Luffy". While this new tactic infuriated his opponent, it proved very effective for Luffy. Unfortunately, he gained enough of an upper hand for Crocodile to stop holding back.
Crocodile ordered Nico Robin to have Cobra lead her to the ponyglyph that contained the location of Pluton, planning to catch up after he finished Luffy. He then used his strongest technique, Ground Secco and Ground Death, to turn the entire area they were standing on into sand. Though Luffy was able to evade Crocodile's devastating powers of erosion, he was caught by his opponent. As Crocodile's hand held Luffy, he was severely dehydrated and was once again left for dead. Fortunately, however, some water bubbles that Luffy misfired earlier revived him from his near death state.
Final Battle Against Luffy and Ultimate Defeat
Miss All Sunday easily dispatched the Marine grunts who had held her up, and defeated Tashigi just as easily with her Devil Fruit ability. As Tashigi struggles for her sword, Crocodile appears, calling her superior Smoker "cowardly" and mocking her and the Marines' ideals of "Justice" before departing again. Tashigi is left crying confused as to what action she should take, and angry she's not strong enough. Miss All-Sunday and King Cobra go in the hidden Grave of the Kings and find the Poneglyph. Crocodile soon arrives, but does not get the information he wants from the stone; as Nico Robin alone could read it, she told him that all that was said on the Ponyglyph was Alabasta's history. He turns his back on Nico Robin, having no further use for her, and impales her with his hook, easily avoiding her attempt to kill him. Cobra triggers a destruction effect on the grave to keep the secrets safe, but Crocodile points out that he can easily escape with his ability. On his way out however, he is confronted by Luffy again.
With Luffy soaked in blood, the punches he delivers to Crocodile negate his powers, due to blood also able to harden sand. Crocodile, now determined to end it once and for all, released the golden cover to reveal a poison hook. Annoyed by this stubbornness, he asks Luffy what is his reason for fighting and being killed. To that question, Luffy answers that he need to give back the country. Crocodile laughs because he thinks he has not yet accomplished that part, but Luffy answers him that if it was the case, Vivi shall be happier, and then he run towards Crocodile and give him a direct punch in the face. Crocodile is surprised about that since Luffy carries no more water. He finally understands that what allows Luffy to beat him is the blood from his wounds. Realizing that he faces someone he should no more underestimate, he takes the upper part of his hook revealing a poisonous weapon. Luffy fights him and gains the upper hand, but eventually gets struck by the hook and is poisoned. However, his determination to defeat Crocodile easily overpowers this, much to the latter's frustration.
As the battle continues, Luffy kicks Crocodile into the air. Upon doing so, Luffy is blasted with one of Crocodile's powerful techniques. Luffy however withstands the attack and prepares to retaliate. Using a series of moves, Luffy propels himself up to Crocodile to deliver the final blow. As a last resort, Crocodile tries to stop Luffy by turning his hand into blades. This however does not stop Luffy as he breaks through the sand created weapons with his bare fist and delivers a flurry of punches onto his opponent. Delivering the punches, Luffy attacks Crocodile with such force that it penetrates a layer of pure bedrock and sends Crocodile flying, defeating the Shichibukai finally.
Capture and Imprisonment
The Baroque Works president lands in the center of the capital. After the truth of his felonies was finally known before the rebels and royal guard, Tashigi, going by her own justice as Captain Smoker ordered, arrested Crocodile, who was stripped of all titles and permissions granted by the Marines and the World Government, and all Baroque Works agents in the city were rounded up and arrested, the only one managing to escape being Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, who later assisted the Straw Hats in escaping the country.
The World Government falsified the entire incident, embarrassed that a pirate had saved the country rather than themselves. To the Marines, Smoker was declared the one who captured Crocodile (much to the former's disgust and anger); the only recognition the Government gave to Luffy was to raise his bounty.
Miss Goldenweek's "Operation: Meet Baroque Works"
Life after Defeat
He was taken to a prison, and after all of the other Baroque Works members were broken out, he refused to go and instead stayed behind enjoying one of his cigars smiling as he watches his former agents escape. On their way out, Miss Goldenweek uses her Rainbow Color Trap to transform his appearance based on his dream, making him appear as the Pirate King. Crocodile was then seen being sent to Impel Down, with a smile on his face. Along with him were Mr. 1, Mr. 2, and Mr. 3.[3]
Later in Impel Down, he is serving his sentence within Level 6, from a cage not too far from Jinbe and "Fire-Fist" Ace, commenting on the fact that Whitebeard's life was at risk due to the incoming war between him and the World Government, stating with a chuckle that several "Silver Medalists" (such as himself) would love to have their revenge on characters such as Whitebeard and Gol D. Roger, due to having only ever been defeated by the two in some way.
He later does not comment when Boa Hancock comes to visit and is one of only three (the other two being Ace and Jinbe) who is unaffected by her beauty. When Luffy, Inazuma, and Ivankov are stuck on Level 6, suddenly a voice calls out to Luffy, offering to create a hole to get the group out of the level. However, Luffy knows the voice all too well, as it belongs to none other than Crocodile.
Luffy is defiant at first, as he has yet to forgive Crocodile for what he's done to Vivi and her country. He seemed confident that Luffy could not refuse his offer. Crocodile had at first lost interest in the outside world, but hearing that Whitebeard is going to war with the Marines has caused him to reconsider as it is a perfect chance to take down the legendary pirate. Luffy however wants nothing to do with him, the Alabasta incident still fresh in his mind. Iva however suggests freeing him, much to Luffy's shock, though reveals that he has long since known the former Shichibukai as far back as when he was a rookie, and should Crocodile get out of line he will take care of him himself since he knows of Crocodile's weakness. It is unlikely that Iva was alluding to the Suna Suna no Mi's weakness, considering that Luffy also knew about it.
Ivankov then states he is only willing to free him if Crocodile helps out (much to Crocodile's chagrin). Jinbe suddenly speaks out, begging to help, as he wants to save Ace as badly as Luffy, even willing to die "a glorious death" to do so. Noting this, Luffy agrees to his wishes. The other prisoners on the level ask to be let out too, but Iva silences them with a Death Wink. With that done, Inazuma frees Crocodile and Jinbe of their chains and the five prepare to break out of Impel Down.
After being released from his bonds, Jinbe warns Crocodile to lay off Whitebeard though Crocodile merely asks if Jinbe would just prefer to fight to the death immediately if that is the case. Iva calls out for Luffy to proceed only to be informed by Inazuma that he, along with Crocodile and Jinbe have already pressed on. Iva shrugs this off and tells the others to follow after him. Bon Kurei is also among the group, having been injected with Tension Hormones (though they work a little too well since he cannot stop spinning). In a stairway leading to Level 4 from Level 5, Luffy, Crocodile and Jinbe rush on. The latter mentions that the execution is set for 3 o'clock and that Whitebeard could make his move at any point while Ace is on the ocean. Luffy is content on the premise that Ace will not be executed before he is scheduled to.
Crocodile gets ahead of the two and dries up the entrance to Level 4, turning it to sand, only to find the security on that level are waiting for them. This does not stop the trio though and they attack at full force. Crocodile uses his Barchan ability, Luffy uses his Gomu Gomu no Ame and Jinbe uses his Fishman Karate (which is so powerful he does not even need to touch the guards to knock them back). It soon becomes evident to the guards that they cannot beat the trio.
On Level 4, Crocodile throws some keys into a cell asking a certain inmate if he would like to escape with him. This person is none other than Mr. 1, who agrees commenting he was tiring of Impel Down himself. However, Sadi-chan and her Demon Guards arrive and quickly begin taking out most of the group with nothing seemingly able to affect them. Just as all seems lost, Luffy, Jinbe and Crocodile rush forward and hit them with strong attacks (Gigant Pistol, Gosenmai Gawara Senkai (TL: Five Thousand Tile Punch) and Sables respectively), knocking out the demon guards in one hit much to the horror of Sadi-chan and the shock of the guards.
Suddenly Hannyabal's men are sucked into some darkness, a figure telling him that despite all the discussion of justice and evil, there really is no answer to be found. The figure turns out to be Blackbeard who stomps Hannyabal into the ground, finally knocking him out. Jinbe quickly shows his disdain of the new Shichibukai which Blackbeard states he does not have to blame him for being a friend of Ace. His name suddenly strikes a cord with Luffy who remembers Ace told him he was looking for someone named Blackbeard and Elder Nyon mentions someone with the same name capturing Ace, as well as Teach's speech back on Jaya. Luffy proclaims he will not let Ace die and starts to attack again. Blackbeard retaliates by summoning a black whirlpool sucking Luffy toward him and slamming him into the ground. Crocodile was genuinely surprised Luffy actually bled from the attack since he's made of rubber. Crocodile picks him out as his successor in the Shichibukai, and asks him if he really is already giving up the title he so desired. Blackbeard comments that it is part of his scheme although it is not going smoothly. He then retorts and asks Crocodile since when did he have to explain his plans to him which Crocodile responded that he really did not care what he was planning, which caused Blackbeard to comment on Crocodile being "short on manners".
A short while later the Minotaurus started attacking the escape force. In shock Mr. 2 Bon Kurei asked why it was already up since him, Luffy, Buggy, and Mr. 3 had defeated it not that long ago. Crocodile then explains that the four demon guards are Awakened Zoan users and they have super strength and high recovery rates and that the three guards he, Jinbe, and Luffy had just beaten would recover soon as well. However, he is not concerned about this and states that Magellan would arrive soon. He is later seen making his way through level 2 with Luffy and Jinbe and comments on how vacant it is. A short while later in Level 1, Buggy literally runs into him while fleeing the demon guards. At first, Buggy starts telling him to watch where he is going, but upon seeing who he just ran into, Buggy screams in shock and fear along with Mr. 3. Crocodile asks Mr. 3 what a worthless piece of trash such as him is doing there, which causes Mr. 3 much fear and dread. However, Crocodile was quite impressed later as Mr. 3 saved everyone from Magellan's Hydra using his Candle Wall.
While Luffy then decides to take on Magellan with the help of Mr. 3's wax abilities. Magellan recognizes the wall made of wax which Mr. 3 gloat is tough as steel and enough to blocks his attacks. Even Crocodile is impressed as is Luffy. Crocodile, along with Jinbe, Buggy, Mr. 1, Mr. 2, and the other prisoners find their way out in order to get a ship. Although they awaited the Marine ships at the entrance, not a single ship was waiting in front of Impel Down. But as they noticed some of the Marine ships sailing away at a far end.
Crocodile, Buggy, and Mr. 1 all ride on a makeshift raft, carried by Jinbe.
Buggy, Mr. 1 and Crocodile jump onto the door before Jinbe carries it from under the water toward the ships. The prisoners over more than over-enthusiastic at the sight of seeing two Shichibukai on their side in action as well as their saviour Buggy along with them. Though Buggy however just jumped on to get away from the prison so as not to face Magellan.
Just as the four near the Marine ships, the Marines spot them and open fire. Jinbe dodges them then states that he going to launch them onto the ship before going underwater. Buggy begins to freak out as their speed drops and the makeshift raft on the verge hitting the ships. Jinbe, meanwhile gathers as much power as he can before sending it out into a strong ocean current that rockets Buggy, Crocodile and Mr. 1 onto the deck of one of the ships (the former two land without trouble, Buggy though ends up landing flat on his face). The Marines quickly point their guns at the bunch but before they can, Jinbe hits the ship with a spear wave much to Crocodile's annoyance. Jinbe apologizes mentioning he got careless since that’s the ship they are going to use. A short while later he helps defend the ship from cannon fire by stopping the cannon balls with a sandstorm. Crocodile rebukes him and says to fire their cannons instead, which Buggy repeats to the crew but makes it sound like it's his idea.
Marineford Arc
After the escape, he is seen having a conversation with Jinbe about how he summoned the whale sharks. He commented on how it seemed odd that Jinbe could summon whale sharks. Crocodile also talks about how the fishmen were a violent race, with which Jinbe agreed. After the ship is contacted by the Marines, Buggy, along with the rest of the prisoners that escaped with him, they are in shock and terror about their destination and they want to stop the ship. Crocodile explains that they can only go to Marineford or Enies Lobby because the current only flows to those two places.
Later, when the prisoners that were released by Buggy became riled up and wanted to take the ship to escape, Crocodile suggested that they could kill all of the prisoners. But fortunately for them Buggy managed to convince them to join the battle instead. Crocodile remained on the ship with Luffy and the others approaching the battle of Marineford. Luffy tries to talk the others into pushing the boat so that it will slide down the back of the wave. Before they do, though, the Den Den Mushi on board intercepts the order, which is to just ignore the schedule and execute Ace then and there. Panicking, Luffy tells the others that they need to hurry. Ivankov performs Hell Wink in hopes of shoving the battleship off of the wave, but instead of sliding down, it's knocked forward, flipping upside down and sending all of the inmates plummeting towards the sea. He was later seen alongside the other Impel Down fugitives, falling from the sky to Marineford.
Through an act of pure fortune, the battleship lands in one of the few spots of ocean that remains unfrozen. Although the impact splits the boat in two, those on board fall into the ocean unharmed. Onlookers are shocked that Crocodile, as well as the other prisoners, have arrived in the middle of the war. As Ivankov looks around, he notices that Crocodile has vanished; having made the first move, Crocodile appears behind Whitebeard, ready to impale him with his golden hook. Before he can, though, Luffy activates Gear Second and intercepts the blow. Crocodile reminds Luffy that they had a deal, to which Luffy responds that because Whitebeard is important to Ace; he would not let Crocodile touch him. Marco remarks to himself that Ace's brother is not half bad.
Crocodile and Mr. 1 have been carving through all that get in their way as Crocodile makes his way towards Whitebeard.[4] While many of Whitebeard's crew attempt to stop Crocodile from attacking the old man again, Crocodile brushes them aside with a sandstorm. Jozu then lunges at Crocodile, somehow managing to strike Crocodile.[5]
As Jozu attempts to attack Crocodile again with Diamond body, he is stopped by Doflamingo, who is riding on his back and controlling his movement. While Crocodile seems antagonistic towards Doflamingo, Doflamingo asks if he and Crocodile can team up. However, Crocodile laughs at the offer and tells Doflamingo that he was ignorant to think he was on Crocodile's level and says that perhaps he was asking to be his underling. Doflamingo laughs at how he thought Crocodile would be rational, the latter stating that if he was, he would not have come to Marineford in the first place. He then performs Sables, attempting to blow Doflamingo away. The attack is not confined to Doflamingo, though, as Buggy is accidentally sucked into the vortex as well.[6]
When Squard stabs Whitebeard and lets everyone think that Whitebeard has betrayed his allies in exchange for his own crew, Crocodile shouts against Whitebeard, claiming he's become much weaker since their last battle, much to Crocodile's disgust.[7]
Up on the execution platform, the guards are about to execute Ace. However, they are blown back by an unknown force, which is revealed to be an attack by none other than Crocodile. While Sengoku wonders why Crocodile would aid his own enemy, the former Shichibukai notes that he only did it because he did not want to see the Marines be satisfied. Suddenly, taking everyone by surprise, Crocodile's head comes flying off of his body. Doflamingo, standing behind Crocodile, says that he is jealous that he had decided to collaborate with Whitebeard instead of him. Forming his head back onto his body, Crocodile responds that he is not teaming up with anyone and attacks Doflamingo.
As Luffy is about to be attacked, Whitebeard's allies jump in and protect him, telling him that he has to go on ahead while Whitebeard holds the Marines off. Ivankov tells Luffy that Whitebeard is putting all of his faith in him; Luffy responds that he does not care about Whitebeard, and that he's only there to save Ace. Mihawk attempts to attack Luffy, but is stopped by Mr. 1, who responds to Luffy's shock by saying that he is protecting him only by Crocodile's orders. After Mihawk strikes Mr. 1 down, Crocodile interferes and protects his right-hand man telling Mihawk to watch out because he's in a bad mood.
Later, the Blackbeard Pirates take Whitebeard's life robbing Crocodile of his revenge since all Crocodile could do is observe his lifeless, but still standing body. When Admiral Akainu had Jinbe and Luffy cornered, Crocodile repelled Akainu. Crocodile reveals himself and uses Sables to throw Luffy and Jinbe into the air claiming if they are gonna protect Luffy, do it right. The duo flies until they plow into Buggy who was still escaping, much to his surprise. His followers take it he was trying to do it deliberately to save them. Just as he gathering himself, Akainu fires a magma fist at them but is stopped by the Whitebeard commanders who comment and proclaim they that'll protect Luffy. He is seen standing alongside the Whitebeard Pirates and preparing to face off against Akainu. It is unknown what happened to him during the confrontation with Akainu, he does however appear later, unharmed when Shanks is calling for peace between the the three factions. He and Mr. 1 slip away from Marineford and escape when Sengoku accepts the ceasefire because of Shanks' arrival.[8]

Three weeks after the war, Crocodile and Daz Bones are seen on an unidentified island in the Grand Line. Looking over the newspaper, he remarks that Luffy and Jinbe, right after having been saved, are committing foolish acts. Bones comments that they must have some sort of plan or they are just being crazy, and then states that Luffy suffered "wounds" that do not heal quickly. Crocodile contradicts Bones' remark replying that his (Crocodile's) "wounds" are already healed, and that he's heading back to the New World as proof. Crocodile invites his former subordinate to come with him and Bones accepts without hesitation.
Two years later
Over the last two years, Crocodile has been successfully eluding any Marines sent to capture him and is currently hiding in the New World.[9]

In the anime it is partially seen how Crocodile changes outfits, as his shoes are laced by the Emporio Ivankov's Dancers. In the manga, Minozebra is defeated by Crocodile's Sables, while in the anime he is defeated by Jinbe's Gosenmaigawara Seiken. In the manga, Minorhinoceros is defeated by Jinbe's Gosenmaigawara Seiken, while in the anime he is defeated by Crocodile's Sables.

In the anime Crocodile mentioned that they were falling down out of the sky because of Ivankov. He is in fact blaming the okama, but this was proven wrong in the next episode, where it showed detailed explanation on what happened on their way to the war. The conversation between Akainu and the Whitebeard Commanders and Crocodile was extended in the anime.
Translation and Dub Issues
In the 4Kids dub, Crocodile suffered a few edits. After his first fight with Luffy, Crocodile was edited so that instead of impaling Luffy with his hook, he dangles him upside down by it. Strangely, in the next episode of the dub, Luffy was right-side up with Crocodile's hook being around his neck, but was still hanging upside-down in some shots. Another edit Crocodile suffered was that instead of being weakened by Luffy's blood in the final fight, he was weakened by his sweat. In spite of this, there were a few frames where the blood can still be seen. Also, in the hidden tomb with Nico Robin, he merely hit her in the back. In the original version, he impaled her through the back.
Additionally, scenes with Crocodile smoking cigars were cut. However, in one episode, 4Kids forgot to edit his cigar at one point. His personality was also changed to be much more sarcastic in the 4Kids dub, such as calling Luffy "desert doodoo".

In a mock-trailer in the anime series Gintama, a Crocodile lookalike of Kondou (the stalker) is seen charging towards one of the characters to fight. He is knocked away by a "Gomu Gomu Pistol" move pulled off by one of the characters.
In a Cover Story Mini-Arc, Crocodile was once shown to have both hands, and no hook. This was corrected for the release of the volume and is now published with the hook correctly placed on his left arm.[10]
In Episode 117 of the anime (roughly at timing 18:00), Crocodile was seen lighting his cigar with both hands (his hook is nowhere to be seen, and so are his numerous rings).
When Igaram first mentioned Crocodile's former bounty, he said it was 80,000,000.[11] However, when Crocodile was introduced in person, his infobox said his bounty was 81,000,000.[12]
In SBS Volume 56, a fan asked Oda why Crocodile was wearing his own clothes since he was still in prisoner clothes after he's released, Oda replied that he went to Newkama Land and got his clothes from there. This is depicted in the anime.[13]

Crocodile's hook is the stereotypical replacement for pirates who lost their hand at battle, especially in fictional stories. However, such limb replacement was not unheard of in real world piracy, since losing limbs in battle was a constant danger. Crocodile is the only character, so far, to have this prosthesis.
The soundtrack playing during Crocodile's defeat is Dvorak's New World Symphony, specifically the 4th movement, "Allegro con fuoco". It was the third time in the anime when a piece of classical music was played in the anime (The first being Buggy and Gaimon's farewell, during which Chopin's Etude in E Major played, the second being Dr. Hiluluk's last speech, during which Ave Maria was played and the fourth being when the zombies claimed Absalom as their leader, with Friedrich Schiller's rendition of Ode to Joy).
Cryptically, in Alabasta, he told Luffy that when he really knew what the sea was like, he would let go of his dream to be Pirate King. After Ace's death, Luffy indeed said that he was too weak to be Pirate King. However, after the two year timeskip, Luffy reaffirmed his dream to be Pirate King to Silvers Rayleigh.
It was noted that if the World Government had known Crocodile was head of Baroque Works, his bounty would be at least 162,000,000.
In the 4th Japanese Fan Poll, Crocodile is ranked the 28th most popular character in One Piece.[14]
