Donquixote Doflamingo is a member of the Shichibukai,[1] captain of the Donquixote Pirates, and King of Dressrosa.[2] He is also an underworld broker, where he operates under the alias "Joker".[9][10]

His bounty before he became a member of the Shichibukai was Beli340,000,000.[1] Although he appeared in the first half of the series frequently, he did not play much of a role until the second half. He is the main antagonist of the Dressrosa Arc and one of the central antagonists of the Pirate Alliance Saga.[10]

Doflamingo is a large, extremely tall, blond-haired man with peach skin who generally dresses in flamboyant clothes. In reference to his animal theme, the flamingo, his clothes are brightly colored with his feathered coat being distinctively pink. Doflamingo sports a pair of sunglasses with red shades. He also has an odd way of walking, a bow-legged waddle (though he does not always walk like this), which is also a reference to his animal theme, a flamingo.

Twenty-four years ago, his hair was longer than it is currently, he had two earrings on his left ear, and he sported a pair of goggles that he wore on his forehead, in addition he wore sunglasses similar to the ones he wears today, however they had a different temple design.

He has a white shirt with red stripes, a green belt, and orange pants with white stripes. He also wears black dress shoes that are somewhat pointed. Originally in the anime, Doflamingo had a red shirt with black stripes, a purple belt, and black pants with red stripes. However, when he reappeared during the events of Sabaody, his color scheme was switched to its manga depiction with the exception of his glasses. In the manga, he has orange-tinted glasses while in the anime, he has purple-tinted ones. He is also seen often, if not always, smiling.[11][12][13]

Two years after the war, Doflamingo's outfit is somewhat less elaborate, wearing a plain, open shirt that has small, dark Jolly Rogers as cufflinks, a different belt, and zebra-striped pants. However, he still wears his trademark sunglasses and dress shoes. Post-timeskip, he drapes his feathered coat on his shoulders instead of leaving his arms in the sleeves, similar to many high ranking marines and pirates alike. Also, he now wears a golden hoop earring on each ear.

In SBS Volume 63 Oda draws the Shichibukai as children. Doflamingo is seen already wearing his trademark sunglasses and happily smoking a cigarette. His hair and clothes are messy and unkempt. He is wearing a low neck button up shirt with black striped pants.

The time is almost here. Go and lay the groundwork. A world where only true pirates can survive will soon be upon us. Those without power, flee while you can. The tide will bring those of unmatched power and the New Era will begin!
— Doflamingo's view on the coming of the "New Era"

Doflamingo Laughs at Chaos

Even in the midst of destruction and chaos of war, Doflamingo still laughs.

Like many other characters he has a unique laugh, being "Fuffuffuffuffuffuffu", or in characterized English, "Heh heh heh heh". Interestingly, when he laughs his mouth is wide open.

Doflamingo is one of the most carefree characters in the series. He seems to have a penchant for dramatic phrasing, as well as a habit of exaggerated posing when giving declarations. He also appears to fear nothing and no one, as he openly taunts Fleet Admiral Sengoku, sits on the table during the Shichibukai meetings and shows only gleeful interest at the thought of warring with Whitebeard.

He also has an odd habit of sitting in strange positions, like on the back of chairs, on tables, on barrels, and even on a pile of bodies in the middle of a war zone and on top of a wall. He is also completely calm and cool-headed in most situations; even when Baby 5 attacked him with what would be lethal blows, he simply dodged away casually while continuing to have his conversation over the phone.[14]

Prior to the timeskip, Doflamingo has a complete and utter lack of fear and doubt. He has never been seen looking with any feeling other than amusement by any turn of events regardless of whom they affect. Only on rare occasions does he let go of his trademark smile, such as frowning in annoyance at being summoned to Mariejois, surprised when Lafitte arrived unannounced and unnoticed until he was made known, and when Little Oars Jr. attempted to attack him directly. However, these moments were short-lived, as Doflamingo would usually just grin again.

Doflamingo Showing Rage

Doflamingo shows seething rage.

Two years after the Battle of Marineford, he would continue to maintain his confident smile while everything was under control. However, when Law defeated Vergo and threatened the SAD supply, and the former even mocked him for his lack of fear and doubt as signs of overconfidence, Doflamingo finally expressed true anger and worry.[15] When Law finally destroyed the SAD supply and captured Caesar, and used that to threaten Doflamingo into abdicating his position as a Shichibukai, Doflamingo finally lost his composure and showed utter panic and intense anger.[16] Doflamingo also showed signs of fear of someone's ability when Admiral Fujitora brought down a meteorite during the three way confrontation between he, the admiral, and Law.

Doflamingo likes to toy around with his opponents and victims in a sadistic and cruel way, as seen when he gleefully forced two Marines to try to kill each other, and forcing Bellamy and Sarkies to fight each other and suffer injuries before dealing the final blow, all the while laughing at their pain. During the battle of Marineford, all of Doflamingo's confrontations had been for the sake of personal amusement, hinting at a sadistic side, such as when he is seen laughing joyfully after severing Oars Jr.'s leg. This puppeteering nature is implied by Law when he claimed that they will not act the way he expects them to.[15]

He was seen laughing when great events happened during the war, regardless of whom they affected. He found great amusement in virtually anything, from Whitebeard entering the battle, to the death of Whitebeard, to the arrival of the Blackbeard Pirates, and even to the arrival of the Red Hair Pirates. He even taunted Gekko Moriah for being too weak to continue as a Shichibukai, and he and some Pacifista took on the assignment of exterminating him with great joy and enthusiasm and yet treated his apparent escape gleefully even though he got away, seemingly unfazed by his own failure to kill him. Another indication of Doflamingo's lack of morality is that he ran the Human Auctioning House without showing remorse of any kind while selling captured people into slavery. However, when pressed for time and desperate, Doflamingo forgoes any form of sadism and interrogation, and instead rashly kills his opponents to satisfy his rage.[17]

Doflamingo seems to live by a "might is right" philosophy, believing that the strong are the ones who make the rules and will be the only ones capable of living in the "New Era". Due to his belief in this "New Era", Doflamingo seems to lose interest in other things easily, as seen with his leadership of the Bellamy Pirates and the ownership of the Human Auctioning House. He also threatened to quit the Shichibukai if the orders given by the World Government are not satisfactory to his likings or if they annoy him, and that he never really cared about the World Government from the beginning. Though a firm believer of the "New Era" philosophy, Doflamingo, unlike his former subordinate Bellamy, himself seems to have an open opinion on dreams, though dreams themselves do not seem to interest him at all; despite his belief, he doesn't seem to oppose becoming the Pirate King.[18]

While he appears to regard those weaker than him as mere pawns rather than crewmates, he does still have some pride and a small sense of honor for his flag and despises the idea of those failing while using it. Though he could not care less for the weaker people, he is not above pointing out their flaws. Despite his apathy for the weak, he often seems to make alliances with promising rookies. He adopted Trafalgar Law, Vergo and Bellamy into his crew and apparently did it very early on their journeys, and treated Law and Baby 5 as though they were his younger siblings;[19] upon Bellamy falling out of his expected standards, Doflamingo discarded him after torturing him first. However, he does have a sense of camaraderie to the subordinates who had been with him for a long time, as he expressed remorse when he had to discard Monet and Vergo, felt disappointment when Law betrayed him, and went out of his way to destroy eight towns simply to protect Baby 5 from her personality flaws.

Donquixote Pirates

Donquixote Pirates' Jolly Roger

Doflamingo's Jolly Roger.

Among the Donquixote Pirates, Doflamingo is apparently not particular about his subordinates' ages, as he is seen to have both a young girl and several elderly people as part of his crew. Several members at Dressrosa call Doflamingo "Young Master" ( Waka?).[14]

Overall, while Doflamingo may be sadistically cruel and unforgiving to his enemies, he seems to have genuine attachment towards his crew members, such as when he was visibly distraught at the thought of Monet giving her life to destroy Punk Hazard as well as giving his honest thanks to Vergo for his years of service. Buffalo stated that Doflamingo was even willing to instate Law back into his crew, having held a seat for him since his betrayal. He will even calmly forgive failure, as long as his orders were followed. Similar to the Straw Hat Pirates and Big Mom Pirates, the Donquixote Pirates seem to have a wide and randomized variety of crew members, as opposed to many crews that follow a specific theme, ranging from a young girl to elderly people. Though it seems that several members have some personality quirks that Doflamingo is willing to look past, such as Vergo's witlessness, Baby 5's inability to refuse any request, Trébol's tendency of getting physically close when communicating, and Diamante's constant denial of flattery until it has been retracted.

Vergo is described as Donquixote Doflamingo’s most convenient and trustworthy Marine officer, implying there are other Marines loyal to Doflamingo. Vergo also enlisted in the Marines by Doflamingo’s instructions.[3] After Vergo had been defeated by Law and left to die in the exploding SAD production room, Doflamingo expressed his eternal gratitude for Vergo's loyal services before bidding him farewell, showing a good relationship despite Doflamingo's dislike for failures, as Vergo was noted to be with Doflamingo the longest, and Vergo smiling in gratitude in return.[18]

Monet is a very loyal subordinate of Doflamingo, having been placed to keep Caesar Clown under surveillance, but he threatened her with death if she allowed anything negative to happen to the scientist.[20] He also ordered her to commit a murder-suicide bombing to take out the entire Punk Hazard populace to clean up the mess. Despite this, they might have a benign relationship, as Doflamingo expressed what seems to be an apology for putting her through the entire ordeal, and even regretted that he must order her to die for him; Monet's loyalty did not waver, as she was already plotting to die in such a way before Doflamingo ordered her, and gladly accepted his last order to her.[21][18] Right before she tried to push the button, Doflamingo appeared to lament the fact that he made Monet blow up the island.

Baby 5 has a grudge against Donquixote Doflamingo to the point that she attempted to attack him with fatal blows, but Doflamingo does not see it as rebellion as he sent her to Punk Hazard to assist Vergo right after her failed assault.[14] According to Buffalo, Doflamingo views her like a little sister, and killed all of her would-be boyfriends to protect her from her rash decision of accepting every proposal she receives.[19] When infuriated by the deaths of her fiancés, she refers to him as "Joker" rather than his true name or, as some other members refer to him, "young master" and refers to him derogatorily. At times when she want to help him, she refers him as "young master" like the others.

Buffalo is perfectly fine with that fact that Donquixote Doflamingo destroyed eight cities and all the people living there, simply for the sake of keeping Baby 5 away from her "boyfriends".

Lao G. has respect and loyalty to Doflamingo and calls him "Young Master"; he considers Doflamingo's orders to be absolute.

Diamante, as the "Hero of the Corrida Colosseum" on Dressrosa, is highly regarded by Doflamingo.

Trébol is very casual around Doflamingo and doesn't seem to be scared of him, as he gets awkwardly close to him, much to Doflamingo's dismay. Trébol often refers to him by the nickname "Doffy".

Although not exactly part of the Donquixote Pirates, the Bellamy Pirates pledged their allegiance to Donquixote Doflamingo, and he lent them his own symbol. Doflamingo, like the rest of the Bellamy Pirates, believes in the New Age but prefers to keep his opinions of other people’s beliefs to himself. Doflamingo has pride in his flag and when Bellamy disgraced it with his loss to Monkey D. Luffy, he punished him, as well as dismissing the crew under the claim that he has no use for Bellamy under his authority. Despite this, he forgave a much stronger Bellamy over the timeskip.

Doflamingo is associated with Caesar Clown. Caesar needs him to approve of his actions before committing them, to avoid drawing attention to Punk Hazard, but Doflamingo distrusts the scientist and sends Monet to spy on him.[22] The high value Caesar has for Doflamingo is due to the disgraced scientist's ability to produce the SAD, that the Shichibukai uses to create the SMILE, which is highly stressed in preventing a wrathful Kaido from killing the entire Donquixote Pirates.[23] For this he threatens Monet with death if she let anything happen to him.[20]

Upon Caesar's defeat, Doflamingo ordered Buffalo and Baby 5 to retrieve the fallen scientist to ensure his supply of SAD does not dry out, rather than dismissing him for his debacle as he did with the Bellamy Pirates.[19] His need for Caesar was so intense that he tricked the world into believing he resigned from the Shichibukai, just to bring Law into a trap so he could rescue the scientist. As Caesar was working directly under Doflamingo, a Shichibukai, his crimes were pardoned as well.[24] Doflamingo bolstered this protection by declaring Caesar as his subordinate in front of Admiral Issho, thus Caesar effectively became a member of the Donquixote Family.[24]

As the king of Dressrosa, Doflamingo has absolute dominion over the entire country. His status as a Shichibukai was what granted the privilege of governing the kingdom without his criminal record affecting his standing.[16] There seems to be a good number of citizens who have a great deal of respect and admiration for their king Donquixote Doflamingo, as well as the Donquixote Pirates. Citizens tend to become angered when their king is disrespected or spoken ill of, and citizens become disgusted at the sight of someone tarnishing Doflamingo's name. It is not known if he is truly a benevolent monarch, or if the memory manipulation brainwashing is at work.

He seemed to be very well beloved amongst the kingdom, as when his (falsified) "departure" from the Shichibukai and abdication of his kingship became public, the island's citizens all went into mass panic and cried for his reconsideration. Even after that, he remained very popular, as the crowd in the Corrida Colosseum cheered and respected the laws his underlings proclaimed, and furiously glared at Franky for speaking ill of their king. Of course, with his resignation being falsified, he remains monarch.

World Government

Despite being an ally of the World Government, he does not appear to care much about them. During the meeting at Mariejois, he showed no respect for the fleet admiral of the Marines, Sengoku. Also, to kill his boredom, Shichibukai Doflamingo used his body manipulation ability to make Mozambia and Stainless fight each other. The fight was stopped when Fleet Admiral Sengoku (now resigned) told Doflamingo to stop messing around. Former ownership of the Human Auction House may have had some impact on the justice system, but apparently not enough to lose his position.

Also, after the Whitebeard War, he threatened to quit the Shichibukai if the orders given to him by the World Government were not satisfactory to his likings or they simply annoyed him. He also stated that he never really cared about the World Government from the beginning. It is also revealed by Law that he is an underworld broker, something unknown to the Government.[10] He used Vergo as a mole into the Marines, manipulating certain actions and events through him to how he saw fit. Upon arriving at Punk Hazard he killed or injured many Marines and he severely wounded Vice Admiral Smoker.

When Law blackmailed Doflamingo to step down from the Shichibukai, Doflamingo managed to deceive Law and the Straw Hat Pirates into thinking so, even having the press print out such claims. It was later revealed that it was falsified news.

Disco is in charge of the Human Auctioning House at Grove 1. When he was seen injured (the anime showing it was Shalulia that caused it when Disco was inquiring about payment for Keimi during the chaos), he called the shop's owner, Shichibukai Donquixote Doflamingo for help - but after the latter told him he could have the shop, as he, Doflamingo, wasn't interested in it anymore because the government was calling the Shichibukai to battle against the Whitebeard Pirates, much to his horror, and he already had big plans for the upcoming era of "Smiles", foreshadowing his complicity in the production of SAD long before Punk Hazard. Being abandoned by Doflamingo left Disco impoverished and bankrupt.

Alongside Caesar, Doflamingo helps supply Kaido of the Yonko with SMILE Devil Fruits. It is because of Kaido's immense power and influence that Doflamingo treasures Caesar to the highest level, and even fears the prospect of confrontation against the mighty Yonko, knowing that failure in producing any more SMILE will make the unassailable Kaido furious.[16]

Doflamingo seems to know Crocodile, as they talked as though they knew each other before. While Crocodile threatened to kill Doflamingo for intruding in his business and mocking him, Doflamingo was willing to offer a partnership to take down Jozu.[25] He however laughs at Doflamingo's offer and attacks both Jozu and Doflamingo.[26] Later, Doflamingo cuts off Crocodile's head, saying he will become jealous if Crocodile allies with Whitebeard yet refuses his own alliance proposal. Crocodile simply says that he is not allied with anyone and the two are seen clashing.[27]

Bartholomew Kuma

Even though no interactions have been shown between Doflamingo and Kuma, Doflamingo seems to be aware of the Pacifista modifications that he has undergone as he explained to Ivankov the reason that his personality has changed. However, he does not appear to know of Kuma’s former affiliation with the Revolutionaries.

Gekko Moriah

Moriah was also quite negative with regards to Donquixote Doflamingo, as Doflamingo damaged Little Oars Jr., despite Moriah wanting the giant intact. After the war he got into a fight with Doflamingo, when Doflamingo was ordered to kill him. Moriah was seen on the ground bleeding while Doflamingo laughs at him and says he is too weak to be a Shichibukai and it would be better for it to look like he died honorably in the war. When Moriah asked if Sengoku ordered his death, Doflamingo mockingly sneered and said that it was someone higher than that.

Trafalgar Law

Trafalgar Law used to be a subordinate of Doflamingo's. Law knows of Doflamingo's alias as the criminal underworld broker, "Joker". Doflamingo used to perceive Law as a little brother. However, he ordered Vergo to murder him as brutally as possible after finding out about Law's treason, referring to it as a shame. Of all of Doflamingo's subordinates who carry his symbol, Law has modified his to omit the cross-out mark.[14] Upon Law taking hold of the situation between the alliance of Doflamingo, Kaido and Caesar, Doflamingo became intensely furious at his former protege.[16] Because of Law, Doflamingo's position as Shichibukai was jeopardized, creating much hatred for his former colleague. It was later revealed that Doflamingo had not renounced his Shichibukai title and it was all a scheme to trap Law.

Straw Hat Pirates

Prior to the timeskip, Doflamingo had no ill-intent towards the Straw Hats and did nothing to hinder Luffy's attempt to rescue Ace during the Battle of Marineford. However, during the events of the Punk Hazard Arc, Law, who has become a traitor to the Donquixote Pirates, formed an alliance with the Straw Hats. Because their plan involves putting his partnership with Kaido in jeopardy, Doflamingo aimed to eliminate the Straw Hat crew along with Law. Doflamingo sent Baby 5 and Buffalo to clean things up and retrieve Caesar, and upon seeing that Monet failed to detonate the island's chemical weapon as ordered, decided to enter the island himself. However, Baby 5 and Buffalo were incapacitated by the Straw Hat Pirates, and then Caesar was also captured after his failed attempt to escape alone to Dressrosa.

Later Doflamingo gathered his top three subordinates to have them prepare for Luffy's arrival, with the Mera Mera no Mi to act as bait to lure him into a trap.

Rebecca has been held as a political prisoner along with other gladiators by Doflamingo within the Corrida Colosseum, for being the granddaughter of the former monarch. She holds great hatred for the Shichibukai, as she intends to kill him after winning the tournament and gaining the Mera Mera no Mi.[28]

It is unknown how Ricky met Doxquixote Doflamingo, but Ricky apparently holds a grudge against him.[29]

Thunder Soldier

The Thunder Soldier plans to destroy the SMILE factory with his comrades. He also says that this tactic is very important since the destruction of the factory will also bring the fall of Dressrosa as well. He also offered Franky that if he had the courage to oppose Doflamingo, they could team up.[29]

Nine hundred years ago, the Donquixote Family started oppressing the Dwarves. During Donquixote Doflamingo’s reign, the Donquixote Family kidnapped 500 Dwarves and put them to work in the Dark Factory of Dressrosa. Some of the Dwarves formed an anti-Doflamingo army, Riku Royal Army, headed by the Thunderous Soldier of Rage.

Abilities and Powers

As the captain of the Donquixote Pirates, Donquixote Doflamingo has complete authority over the crew. He is active in the realm of underworld brokering (including slavery, and production and distribution of weapons of mass destruction) in the New World, and is currently the most resourceful and influential broker there is. In addition, he is the king of Dressrosa, which gives him dominion over an entire kingdom. Being able to deceive the entire world that he resigned from the Shichibukai is considered to be an impossible feat by anyone less than a World Noble, as Law suggested that Doflamingo has something to do with them due to this.[30]

He is the only Shichibukai known to fight one of his colleagues, Gekko Moriah, and seriously injure him (though he was aided by a small group of Pacifistas and Moriah had yet to recover from his injuries from the war). Whoever ordered him to take out Moriah apparently had enough confidence in his strength to have him kill a fellow Shichibukai, and was highly disappointed when he allowed Moriah to escape before the final blow could be dealt. He claimed that the one who gave him the order to kill Moriah was of higher rank than Sengoku, those being either the Gorosei or Commander-in-Chief Kong, or somebody else of high rank within the World Government.

He is so powerful that Law suggested that if Doflamingo resigns from his position, the Marines will send their top fighters, the admirals, against him. His strength over the lower ranked Marines was enforced when Doflamingo toyed around with Vice Admirals Mozambia and Stainless, and then later defeated Vice Admiral Smoker, both occasions with tremendous ease, showing that he has the ability to take down at least a Vice Admiral at Smoker's level (who's formidable as a Logia-class Devil Fruit user). He is so strong that Law, a super rookie and a Shichibukai, chose not to fight until he encountered Doflamingo to save energy and have a higher chance against him.

Aside from his tremendous combat skills, Doflamingo has great amounts of influence on the world, being a Shichibukai and a world famous pirate. He is also known as Joker, the most powerful broker in the underworld. He had the Bellamy Pirates under his authority, as well as powerful subordinates such as Vice Admiral Vergo and Monet, as well as formerly Trafalgar Law, who is now a fellow Shichibukai. He had Vergo installed into the Marines as a spy, thus having a trusted and convenient Marine under his command. Doflamingo is also associated with the former World Government scientist, Caesar Clown, but does not trust him and placed Monet as a deep cover agent to monitor his actions.

In addition, Doflamingo was the owner of the once-most popular Human Auctioning House in Sabaody Archipelago, but gave it to Disco when he lost interest in slave-trading in favor of the Battle of Marineford and the New Age. His abandonment of the auction hall made it succumb to ruination, further demonstrating the power of his influence (and the consequences for the lack of it). He seems to have alot of connections as he was able to acquire the reborn Mera Mera no Mi.

He is well-versed in psychological warfare, as he prepared to use the fruit as bait to break apart the alliance between Luffy and Law, believing that Luffy would never allow anyone else to have it. True enough, after learning of the fruit being offered as the grand prize at the Corrida Coliseum, Luffy immediately entered himself into the contest to try to win it. This displays great insight from Doflamingo towards other people. He also used his influence to have the media print out a falsified news of his resignation from the Shichibukai in order to set a trap for his foes.[31]

Physical Abilities

Donquixote Doflamingo is one of the most powerful pirates to appear so far. He has displayed physical abilities of superhuman dexterity and speed, with excellent reaction time.

Agility & Levitation

Doflamingo has considerable reflexes and agility. He was able to dodge Oars Jr.'s attacks with relative ease and completely jumped over Oars Jr.'s gigantic body. He was fast enough to escape through the eye of Crocodile's sandstorm and exit unscathed. He also showed enough strength to equally clash against Crocodile's hook with just a kick. For unknown reasons, he can also glide or fly in midair using the Sky Path (空の道 Sora no Michi?), as seen when he did so to cross over the seas to reach Punk Hazard from Dressrosa.[18][16]

Strength and Endurance

A testament to his power is that (like fellow Shichibukai Dracule Mihawk and Boa Hancock) over the course of the series he has never been injured by any other character during a battle. This is noteworthy as he was present in the war between the Marines and Whitebeard Pirates, a battle in which most of the series' strongest individuals, such as Sengoku, were in some way injured. When Baby 5 attacked him and actually hit him with an explosive round, one that he did not even attempt to dodge, Doflamingo took no damage at all and continued his conversation, not even paying attention to it. He also effortlessly dodged all other attacks from her.[14]

He managed to prevent himself from being completely frozen by Kuzan, as shortly after the ice encased him, he shattered the frozen prison unharmed, while normally it would have led to the victim becoming dangerously brittle.[2]

Miscellaneous Skills

File:Doflamingo's Powers.png

Doflamingo's power seems to revolve around the manipulation of strings.[17] He usually moves his fingers accordingly to bend them as he pleases for either manipulating people like puppets or bifurcate his targets. The strings appear to be extremely thin or may even be invisible, making it almost impossible to notice and avoid them. He has shown himself capable of controlling more than one person at the same time without apparent effort. This power is classified as a Paramecia-class Devil Fruit in One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World.[32]

He can make his victims move to his will by moving his fingers accordingly. Doflamingo mainly uses this power to force comrades to fight (and even kill) each other, while Doflamingo himself sits at the sidelines and watches. In One Py Berry Match this ability is named as Marionette (マリオネット Marionetto?). It is currently unknown what the limitations of his abilities are. Every one of his victims being controlled was unable to resist his powers and therefore was rendered completely helpless. This ability is even powerful enough to stop the physically strong "Diamond" Jozu in his tracks, preventing him from further attacking Crocodile.

Doflamingo Dices Meteorite

Doflamingo uses his strings against a meteorite.

The strings can also be used for cutting, allowing Doflamingo to effortlessly slice off body parts and destroy weapons. He managed to cleanly sever Oars Jr.'s right leg in one swift motion and decapitated Crocodile, though Crocodile's powers only made this a nuisance (due to them not being imbued with Busoshoku Haki). When Issho brought down a meteorite on Green Bit, he crossed his strings to form a net, and sliced the meteorite into small pieces to protect himself from harm.[24]

Main article: Haki
Doflamingo's Haoshoku Haki

Doflamingo using Haoshoku Haki.

Doflamingo possesses both Busoshoku Haki and Haoshoku Haki. His Haki powers were first revealed during his fight against the G-5 marines, using Busoshoku Haki in conjunction with his wires to cut the Logia-class user Smoker, and Haoshoku Haki to knock out the majority of G-5 soldiers.[17][2]

He was present at Gol D. Roger's execution in Loguetown.

He once had Trafalgar Law and Vergo under his command. Before becoming famous Vergo enlisted in the Marines under Doflamingo's orders, and he ascended the ranks for fifteen years, eventually becoming a vice admiral, while keeping his true identity hidden from everyone outside of his affiliates, thus granting Doflamingo the most trusted and convenient marine officer available to him.

Doflamingo Becomes King of Dressrosa

Doflamingo becoming king of Dressrosa.

Eight years before the start of the series, a 31 year old Doflamingo joined the Shichibukai, and started to build his powerful reputation.[16] During his tenure as a Shichibukai, he went to Dressrosa and had a Devil Fruit user transform some of the citizens into living toys.[33] Once the Riku royal family was overthrown, Doflamingo ascended to the throne and promised wealth to the citizens. In the meantime, he had his subordinates hunt down anyone with an affiliation with the previous king.[34]

In addition, he enacted two laws that must be followed to the letter.[33]

  • The first law is that the lights go out precisely at midnight, after which no one is allowed outside. Humans must stay in their homes, while toys stay in their toy houses.
  • The second law is that humans and toys may not enter the others' houses.

The Bellamy Pirates also swore their allegiance to the Shichibukai, and were permitted to use his Jolly Roger.

At some time, Doflamingo formed a three-way alliance with the rogue Marine scientist Caesar Clown and Kaido of the Yonko, in order to create the SAD and Zoan artificial Devil Fruit, to create an army of Zoan-class users within the New World. However, needing Caesar for the SAD production and not trusting him, Doflamingo assigned Vergo to act as an intermediate. Vergo benefited Caesar's research by officially reporting the kidnapped children to have died in accidents at sea.[3] Monet was placed as a deep cover agent to monitor the deranged scientist on behalf of Doflamingo.[22]

He murdered all eight of Baby 5's boyfriends and destroyed the towns they originated from on the way, due to wanting to protect her from rash decisions because she was unable to refuse any request.[19]

Sky Island Saga

Jaya Arc

Doflamingo was introduced through his attendance at a meeting held by the World Government, supervised by Fleet Admiral Sengoku after the arrest and dismissal of Crocodile as a member of the Shichibukai.

At Mariejois, Vice Admiral Stainless and Mozambia were seen fighting. One stated that he had no control of himself, his hands were moving by themselves. Vice Admiral Tsuru told the Shichibukai Doflamingo to stop. After being asked to halt with his antics, Doflamingo took matter further by having the two marines draw their swords ready to kill each other. Just then, Sengoku walked into the room and asked Doflamingo if he was there for a battle. Doflamingo mocked him, and Bartholomew Kuma backed Doflamingo up by stating they now had a target. Surprised that 2 of the 6 remaining Shichibukai came, Sengoku started the meeting. Doflamingo and Sengoku exchange comments on the success of pirating. [35] Just then, Mihawk arrived, commenting on the behavior of the Marines and other Shichibukai he had heard from outside the room. Doflamingo stated Mihawk was the least expected person to show up and Mihawk replied that he was there to be merely a spectator as the meeting was about pirates of particular interest to him.

They were then interrupted by another person, a silhouette of a man was seen greeting himself as an observer also, but stating he wished to participate in the meeting. He was identified by one of the Marines as Laffitte, a policeman who was renowned for his violent ways and exiled from the West Blue. He stated he wished to put forward his captain's name for appointment to the position of Shichibukai. The name of "Teach" was put forward by Laffitte. He was told that because Teach is an unknown pirate, he being a Shichibukai will have little deterrence to other pirates, and thus the government can hardly accept Laffitte's request for the nomination of Teach. However, Laffitte stated they were working to change this and to remember the name of the Blackbeard Pirates.

Water 7 Saga

Long Ring Long Land Arc

At Mock Town Bellamy and Sarkies were having an unexpected battle against one another. The reason behind the battle was the unexpected return of their true leader: Shichibukai member Donquixote Doflamingo. He felt upset that his "symbol" was being used in shame to deride foolish dreams, such as the existence of a city of gold in the sky. Although Bellamy begged for forgiveness and stated that he would never shame the flag ever again, Doflamingo saw no use for him, and used his powers to have Sarkies attack him. With this done, Doflamingo touted the beginning of a "New Age" where only worthy pirates exist and the trash is abandoned. [36]

Disco Calls Doflamingo

Doflamingo receives a call from Disco.

Doflamingo was revealed to be the owner of the Auction House. Disco called Donquixote Doflamingo to help out since the Auction House was owned by him. Doflamingo told Disco that Slavery was old news and that they were now in the age of smiles. He then told Disco to keep the Auction House and never call him again. Disco desperately tried to convince Doflamingo to help, but he refused. He mentioned that all of the Shichibukai were assembling at Mariejois to set up the battle to come: The Royal Shichibukai vs. the Whitebeard Pirates.[37]

Amazon Lily Arc

Upon the looming threat of the Whitebeard Pirates he answered the call of the Shichibukai to battle Whitebeard and join the war. He was later shown dining with the other Shichibukai, except for Jinbe and Boa Hancock, at Mariejois.[38]

Marineford Arc

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

In the anime, it showed him sitting in a guest room with the other Shichibukai at Marineford during the assembling of troops, quietly anticipating the battle ahead.[39]

Concludes non-canon section.

When the broadcasted execution of Ace started, he, alongside Bartholomew Kuma, Dracule Mihawk, Gekko Moriah, and Boa Hancock, stood ready for the war.[40] When Sengoku announced the father of Ace was Gol D. Roger, he along with Moriah was surprised and greatly amused by this revelation.[41] While the Marines were in panic as two tsunamis advanced towards them, Doflamingo laughed at the "Legendary Pirate", meaning Whitebeard, while the great pirate himself also laughed.

Doflamingo Cuts Oars Jr's Leg Off

Doflamingo severs Oars Jr.'s right leg.

Until the arrival of Oars Jr., he was content to watch the battle unfold from the sidelines, commenting that things were getting interesting. When Oars Jr. managed to get to the plaza of Marineford, the pirate attacked Doflamingo in an attempt to take down at least one Shichibukai before falling over. However, Doflamingo dodged the attack with ease by jumping in the air, and in the process somehow sliced off Oars Jr.'s leg, laughing all the while, much to Moriah's anger.

Doflamingo responded to the Whitebeard Pirate, 13th Division Commander 'Water Buffalo' Atmos, saying that being in the core of the Era "cracked" him up. Doflamingo used his mysterious ability on Atmos who suddenly warned his comrades to stay back. However, Atmos was late with his warning and was forced to fight his own comrades. The Shichibukai himself shouted that terms for things that changed over time. People who had not seen war had different meanings for "Marine" or "Pirate". Doflamingo states that the ground was neutral and whoever was at the top, would define Justice, thus shouting, Justice would prevail.

Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!

Doflamingo Explains Kuma's Condition

Doflamingo explains Kuma's condition as a mindless Pacifista to Ivankov.

When Luffy and his party finally arrived at Marineford, he was delighted to see that all the current and former Shichibukai (excluding Blackbeard) were assembled and, at the same time, amused that Luffy, the "famous rookie," was there as well. When Sengoku revealed that Luffy's father was actually Dragon, Doflamingo commented that Ivankov's appearance at the battlefield and fighting on Luffy's side finally made sense (revolutionaries and pirates have not been known to associate with each other up until now). Upon Ivankov's confrontation with Kuma, Doflamingo asked Ivankov if he had any prior relationship with Kuma. He also said that Kuma was dead.

Luffy, contemplating on how helpful Hancock is happened to make his way to where Ivankov and Kuma were battling. While Luffy recognized Kuma, Ivankov told Doflamingo that Kuma was standing before him and cannot be dead. Luffy asked Ivankov if he and Kuma knew each other, and Ivankov confirmed, while stating that something was wrong with Kuma. Doflamingo once more spoke on Kuma's behalf, saying that while the two seemed to know Kuma, the man standing before them was not Kuma, as Vegapunk had finished his modifications on the former Bartholomew Kuma. Doflamingo then explained to Ivankov the process Kuma volunteered to undergo, as his body was converted into a "Pacifista", with bits and pieces of him being modified at a time.

Doflamingo Takes Control of Jozu

Doflamingo taking control of Jozu.

Ivankov said that Doflamingo was lying as Kuma hated the World Government and would never work with them. While Doflamingo admitted that he did not know what kind of deal Kuma and the World Government made, he went on to say that until a few days ago he had retained his personality, but now he was a walking corpse with no human memory, following the World Government's every command: PX-0. As Jozu attempted to slam Crocodile again with his diamond body, he was stopped by Doflamingo, who was riding on his back and controlling his movement.

While Crocodile seemed antagonistic towards Doflamingo, Doflamingo asked if he and Crocodile could team up. However, Crocodile only laughed at this, and asked Doflamingo if he thought they were on the same level, instead mocking him, saying what Doflamingo was actually asking was to serve under Crocodile. Doflamingo laughed right back saying he was hoping for Crocodile to be rational, to which Crocodile responded by saying that if he was he would not be here in the first place. He then attacked both Doflamingo and Jozu with a massive sandstorm.[26]

Doflamingo and Crocodile Clash

Crocodile and Doflamingo clash.

When Whitebeard gets stabbed by Squard, Doflamingo was seen grinning. After Whitebeard used his Devil Fruit to tilt all of Marineford and a good portion of the ocean, Doflamingo laughed, saying Whitebeard was a "crazy old guy." After Crocodile saved Ace by blowing away the executioners, Doflamingo somehow used his powers to decapitate him apparently out of envy that Crocodile had "joined up" with Whitebeard and not with him earlier on. Crocodile responded that he joined with no one. With that settled, Doflamingo engaged Crocodile in battle.[27]

The battle was interrupted at a certain point, since Crocodile was later seen fighting with Dracule Mihawk. When Luffy managed to free his brother, Doflamingo said that it would be a lot funnier if they escaped Marineford, so he did not want to fight them, which angered Momonga. Later, when the Blackbeard Pirates showed up, Doflamingo laughed, saying that this was the best and that things were really getting awesome now. When Whitebeard met his end at the hands of the Blackbeard Pirates, Doflamingo once again laughed.

When Shanks arrived and called for peace between the pirates and the Marines, Doflamingo casually stood where he was, smiling as he always does.

Post-War Arc

File:Moriah Attacked by Doflamingo and Pacifistas.png

With the war over, Doflamingo was seen in the backstreets of Marineford, accompanied by several Pacifista units, all attacking Gekko Moriah. Doflamingo stated that Moriah had gotten too weak, and thus can no longer fulfill the duties of the Shichibukai, and that he was going to make it look like Moriah died in the war. When Moriah asked if it was Sengoku who was responsible, Doflamingo pointed up and told him to "try higher".

Later, Doflamingo informed a government official that Moriah disappeared into thin air before he could deal the final blow. Doflamingo did not seem to care since Moriah was critically injured and would probably die soon anyway. He even joked that there was a chance Moriah would even come back as a zombie, which befits him. The official, however, was clearly not as amused and scolded Doflamingo for not completing the job properly. Doflamingo then stepped up to the official saying that he does not care about the powers in the World Government and warned the official that he would quit the Shichibukai if he feels like it.

Sometime during the timeskip, Doflamingo managed to come into the possession of the Mera Mera no Mi, which was reborn after Ace's demise. He kept it with him in the hopes of using it to lure Luffy to him, having developed an interest in the Supernova.[5]

Pirate Alliance Saga

Punk Hazard Arc

Doflamingo was revealed to have a secret identity, Joker, a notorious underworld broker providing resources and cover for Caesar Clown.[10] He gave the scientist permission to eliminate the Straw Hat Pirates, the G-5 Marines led by Smoker and Tashigi and Kin'emon.[9] Vergo and Monet were also revealed to be his underlings with the latter being placed as a deep cover agent to monitor the deranged scientist. Trafalgar Law also stated that he was a former subordinate of Doflamingo.[3]

He seemed to have a hidden agenda in dealing with Caesar Clown, as he did not want Caesar to die, because he is the only person in the world that can create SAD. He went as far as to to threaten Monet with death if she let something happen to Caesar.[20]

Doflamingo at Dressrosa

Doflamingo at Dressrosa.

Doflamingo was first seen after the timeskip relaxing on Dressrosa. He was contacted by Vergo, who told him that Law had entered the SAD production room. Meanwhile, Baby 5 started assaulting Doflamingo with the intent of killing him. While Doflamingo brushed her off, he ordered Vergo to eradicate Law mercilessly, but to also be cautious of Luffy, saying "that kid" possesses Haoshoku Haki and to kill him if he threatened Caesar's life. Once his attacker was subdued, Doflamingo contacted Caesar and Monet. He informed them that he was going to send Buffalo and Baby 5 to Punk Hazard as support. He also told Caesar and Monet that once they arrived, everyone was to return to Dressrosa after they had completed their missions.[14]

Angry Doflamingo

Doflamingo shows anger for the first time.

When Vergo started to battle both Law and Smoker, Doflamingo monitored the battle via a Den Den Mushi under Vergo's coat. After retrieving his heart, Law spoke to Doflamingo, and claimed that he would defeat Vergo and Luffy would do likewise to Caesar, leaving him without SAD. Law then started taunting Doflamingo, and said that his overconfidence would be his undoing. Doflamingo, in turn, reminded Law of a beating that Vergo gave him some time ago. Law then cut Vergo and continued to taunt, leaving Doflamingo without his smile and angered by Law's words.[15]

Buffalo called Doflamingo to report that they had found Caesar, looking tattered after being sent flying out of his lab and crashing into a tanker. Doflamingo was surprised at first, but then smiled. He ordered Buffalo to recover Caesar and return to Dressrosa immediately. Doflamingo began laughing under his breath, saying that with Caesar in his custody again, he could continue to make SAD.[19]

Later, Monet called Doflamingo. He informed her of the defeat of Vergo and Caesar Clown before apologizing for being mean to her. He then told her to press a button that would activate a weapon that would kill everyone on the island except for Caesar. Monet replied that she was already in front of the button and bidded Doflamingo farewell as she prepared to press the button.[19]

Doflamingo Heads to Punk Hazard

Doflamingo heads to Punk Hazard.

After that, he called Vergo to thank him for his hard work before the SAD room exploded. However, before Monet could press the switch, Caesar unknowingly stabbed her heart, killing her. Realizing that something was wrong, Doflamingo decided to personally go to Punk Hazard, by flying over the ocean. His underlings complained about his rash behavior and how he left them behind.[18]

Along the way he encountered a life raft from the SAD tanker ship. On it he found the severed but alive heads of his crew mates Baby 5 and Buffalo. They apologized profusely to him, but he told them that they were only following his orders. A Den Den Mushi of Law's began to speak to Doflamingo. Doflamingo noted Law was a hard person to get a hold of. He asked Law what he had done with his crew mates' bodies, but Law told him he did not know. Doflamingo laughed at Law's confidence, warning him to not to anger him. Law responded that the only one who was going to be angered is Kaido, one of the four Yonko. Law told Doflamingo that once he finds out he can no longer produce the SAD he will not be able to bargain with him, and will be killed.[16]

Doflamingo asked what Law wanted in exchange for getting Caesar Clown back. Law demanded that he abdicate the position of Shichibukai that he had held for a decade and return to being a common pirate. That once he was no longer protected, the Admirals would hunt him down. Law told Doflamingo if the newspapers do not say that he has resigned, their negotiations would be over. After this, Doflamingo was left simmering in rage over what to do next.[16]

Just as the Straw Hats departed from Punk Hazard, Doflamingo arrived on the island. He promptly reattached the heads of his subordinates while gliding in from the sea. He used Haoshoku Haki, which knocked out a majority of the G-5 Marines.[17] They asked him why he was attacking them, as Doflamingo asked where the Straw Hat Pirates and Law went. They opened fire, ignoring Smoker's order to stand down as Doflamingo used his string based powers to slice apart the crew and their weapons. Still enraged, he demanded the location of the pirates.[17]

Kuzan Stops Doflamingo

Kuzan preventing Doflamingo from killing Smoker.

Smoker confronted Doflamingo and lied about not knowing where Law and the Straw Hats went, and that he intended to report this to Vice Admiral Vergo. Annoyed, Doflamingo said that Smoker knew too much and used the power of Haki to cut him down. The remaining G-5 Marines despaired, as Doflamingo promised he would kill them as well and catch up to Law and the Straw Hats. Before he could deliver the finishing blow, the former Admiral Kuzan appeared suddenly and demanded that he step aside.[17]

He ignored him and tried to finish Smoker off. Before he was able to make another move, Kuzan froze him solid but Doflamingo broke out of his ice. He then told Kuzan that he had no intention of engaging him. He then questioned briefly just what he has become, saying that the rumors about him were not good, before leaving with Baby 5 and Buffalo. The next morning, the newspaper reported that he had given in to Law's demands and resigned from the Shichibukai, as well as abdicating his position as monarch of Dressrosa. He was seen sitting alone in his room letting a record player drown out the noise from outside. He was shown scowling waiting for Law's call, then the Den Den Mushi rang, and he picked it up.[2]

Dressrosa Arc

Doflamingo answers the call and tells Law that he resigned from the Shichibukai. Luffy suddenly interrupts the call and angrily asks Doflamingo if he is the boss of Caesar. Doflamingo asks Luffy where he has been the past two years, but Luffy refuses to answer. Then he states his desire to see Luffy and informs the Straw Hat captain that he has something that Luffy would want to get, which Luffy thinks it is meat. Law then takes back the Den Den Mushi and informs Doflamingo that he will return Caesar as he promised. Law then tells him that he could pick up Caesar at Green Bit, an island north of Dressrosa.[5]

Doflamingo Holds Mera Mera no Mi

Doflamingo holding the Mera Mera no Mi.

Doflamingo orders Baby 5 to find Trébol and lets him come to him along with it. While waiting, Doflamingo shows gratitude to Diamante, for the profitable Colosseum that he supervises. Afterwards Trébol arrives, but Doflamingo remarks that he stands too close to him. Trébol gives him his desired object inside a small chest, and Doflamingo states that Luffy would come when he learns about it. He leaves it in the capable hands of Diamante and reveals the object inside the chest to be the Mera Mera no Mi, and correctly asserts that Luffy would definitely come to make sure nobody gains his brother's power.[5]

It is later revealed, by Sanji, that Doflamingo never resigned from his position as a Shichibukai and that it was actually a gambit to fool Law into returning Caesar. He is then seen approaching Green Bit right on time for his appointment with Law, laughing maniacally.[31]

Green Bit Confrontation

Doflamingo's meeting with Law and Issho on Green Bit

After Doflamingo and Issho arrived at the exchange site, Law tells Doflamingo that he has become aware of his deception and is surprised that he was able to use the powers of the World Government.[30] After Law explains that only the World Nobles have the authority to beguile the whole world, Doflamingo replies that it is way more complicated and that he really wants to kill Law.[30]

Since the deal was off, Law refused to release Caesar. Upon seeing Issho, Doflamingo commented on how he and Ryokugyu were beasts in terms of power. Issho explained that he is aware that Doflamingo was not following the rules as a Shichibukai and that he noticed that Caesar referred to Doflamingo as Joker. Doflamingo simply replied that if the admiral wants to investigate him, he better be prepared to back up his claims. After Law declared that he and Luffy are indeed in an alliance, Issho took away Law's title and used his gravity ability to bring down a meteor. Before the meteor impacted, Doflamingo, Issho, and Law used their abilities to reduce the meteor to pieces. After emerging unscathed, Doflamingo, Issho, and Law faced off in a three-way confrontation.[24]

As the battle continued on, Doflamingo smiled, commenting that Issho was not showing any mercy.[42] After Law contacts Chopper, Doflamingo directly confronts him and demands that he return Caesar's heart. He informs Law that Luffy has fallen for a trap at the Corrida Colosseum and orders him to surrender, asserting that his alliance is finished.[43]

Law was later defeated and Doflamingo takes Caesar's heart. As Law lies injured on the ground with Issho sitting next to him, Doflamingo explains some history of the Donquixote Family, such as them being one of the founders of the World Government.[44]

Translation and Dub Issues

His family name, Donquixote, is originally one word. In the English translations, it has been separated into two, Don Quixote, possibly the translators believing it was inspired by the titular character of a novel.

The Yaksha part of his epithet, Heavenly Yaksha, refers to demons of dual personalities who guard natural treasures hidden deep under the earth and roots, from Buddhism, Jain and Hindu folklore. The English manga translated it into "Heavenly Demon".

Anime and Manga Differences

Jaya Arc

In the manga, Doflamingo's actions during the Shichibukai meeting after Crocodile's title was revoked were noticed by Tsuru. In the anime, his actions were noticed instead by Mozambia.

Marineford Arc

In the manga, in the moment when Sengoku reveals the relationship between Dragon and Luffy, he stated that was the reason why Ivankov was with Luffy. In the anime, he did not say anything, he was only briefly seen smiling.

In the manga and other related merchandise, Doflamingo has a different color scheme than the one that was presented initially in the anime. The anime later however changed the majority of Doflamingo's color scheme to match that presented in the manga. [11][12][13]

Early One Piece

Early Shichibukai

Early concept of some Shichibukai from One Piece Green.

In One Piece Green: Secret Pieces, an early concept of Donquixote Doflamingo was revealed, showing that he was originally a rapper, and that he was supposed to be a little younger than his current setting.

File:Michel Polnareff.png
  • His physical appearance is similar to the famous French singer Michel Polnareff.
  • Doflamingo's flag was the first "smilie" style Jolly Roger to be seen in the series. Doflamingo also stated that slavery is "out", but smilies are "in". With the introduction of SAD and his illicit underground network trafficking in man-made Zoans, "SMILE", the meaning behind his words and symbol become much clearer.[37]
  • His surname is a reference to Don Quixote, the main character of the famous Spanish novel "El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha", while his given name, Flamingo, is a bird whose plumage resembles Doflamingo's flamboyant jacket and likely comprises it.
