The Barto Club is defeated by the Red Hair Pirates.

At Gartel Island, the Red Hair Pirates took revenge on the Straw Hat Grand Fleet's Barto Club for burning their flag on their territory, shackling their captain Bartolomeo. Hongo explained to Bartolomeo that he would be forgiven if within the next month he hands a poison to Monkey D. Luffy that will kill him violently. However, in order to protect his idol, Bartolomeo drinks the poison. However, despite his resolve to die in Luffy's place, it is soon revealed that the poison was fake, and the Red-Haired Pirates let them go. Shanks is seen smiling, and when asked by Benn Beckman, he explained he was happy to see that someone cares about Luffy so deeply. However, Yasopp asked Shanks to step out of the way, stating that "every action has a price to be paid," and with a shot of his rifle, he sunk the Going Luffy-senpai, leaving it unknown whether the crew survived or not.

Blackbeard and his officers discuss their next move.

Blackbeard returned to Hachinosu after defeating the Heart Pirates, where he started scolding Avalo Pizarro for letting Koby and Gecko Moria escape, explaining that the Poneglyphs have become common knowledge and that they must prepare to take on the Four Emperors, Marines, and World Government. Teach's mood eventually improved after seeing that his crew's morale was high, and he became even more pleased with Kuzan for capturing Garp and the successful kidnapping of Charlotte Pudding. Blackbeard then contacted Laffitte, who had infiltrated the headquarters of Umit Shipping, where the Revolutionary Army was blocking food from reaching Mary Geoise. Catarina Devon and Van Augur soon returned to Hachinosu with Caribou.[1]

Two days after the Egghead Incident, the Giant Warrior Pirates' ship is still on its way to Elbaph. However, after drinking heavily, the ones on board (the Giants, Nico Robin, Franky, Brook, Jinbe, Jewelry Bonney, and Lilith) realized the Thousand Sunny and remaining Straw Hat Pirates were nowhere to be found.

Nami awakens with a hangover inside a mysterious castle[1] wearing a new outfit she did not remember putting on. She quickly reunited with Usopp, and both fled from the many giant animals living in the castle until they were finally saved by Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, who claimed to have been fighting and eating many other giant creatures around the castle. All of them are wearing new clothes similar to those worn by the Elbaph giants, but none of them know how they got there, nor the whereabouts of the Sunny and the rest of the crew.[2] After leaving the castle, Usopp theorized that, based on their clothes, which resemble those of the giants, they were in Elbaph and that they somehow became giants. They soon encountered a person riding a massive grasshopper, who claimed that they were in the Land of Gods and that the various massive animals were all gods. He then warned them against going to the Sun God's temple, which was guarded by ferocious guardians, though this instead ignited Luffy's lust for adventure, and he instead raced towards said temple before his crew could stop him. However, he seemingly collided into the sky itself, causing it to shatter, which threw the land into confusion. They then soon realized that the sky was actually a massive one-sided mirror, and just beyond it was another hobby room, of a giant's proportions, where they soon found and rescued Chopper.

After examining the room, they discovered a giant-sized sewing set and building blocks, similar to those that make up the kingdom they were trapped in. They quickly came to the conclusion that a giant of questionable tastes had captured them in their sleep, dressed them up like dolls, and placed them in a massive diorama. Soon after, they were beset by giant animals who guarded the place, forcing them to fight. The commotion of their battle attracted the attention of the fake Sun God, who was outraged at the damage done to the hobby room and his pets, causing him to pursue the Straw Hats back into the diorama just after they defeated his pets. As they ran away, they subdued Iscat, the giant cat that can turn into a lion, and had it carry them across the "Land of Gods," which was just a regular-sized room to the giant.[3]

Nami, having memorized the schematics of the diorama, directed them to go to the opposite side of the room, where they exited through the wall on the other end. The fake Sun God, who was actually Road of the New Giant Warrior Pirates, pursued them, briefly capturing them with a metal net, though Zoro and Sanji quickly broke them out of it. However, Road remained confident that they would be unable to escape, as the "kingdom" was originally a prison for giants, but he soon learned from his other captives, whom he referred to as "Live-dolls," of all the damage the Straw Hats had done to his diorama. As it turns out, Road was against his captain, Hajrudin, joining their crew to the Straw Hat Grand Fleet and being subservient to Luffy. So when his giant raven, Muginn, brought him the Thousand Sunny with the Straw Hats in it from the Sleeping Mist Zone, he thought he could make them his servants by turning them into "Live-dolls." As Road laughed at the drama the Straw Hats brought to his little "kingdom," Nami had Zeus strike him with a Lightning Blast while Luffy broke the wall with a Mini Gear 4: Gomu Gomu no Kong Gun, allowing them to escape the cell.[4]

Adventure in Elbaph: The Land of the Giants[]

At sea, the remaining Straw Hats declared to the Giant Warrior Pirates the search for their comrades was over. Even though they couldn't find their crewmates, they have looked everywhere, and they were confident that they were alive, so they decided to proceed to their intended destination in hopes of finding them, which the giants happily obliged to. They soon received a newspaper, which revealed that Dorry and Brogy's bounties have both shot up to Beli1,800,000,000 (though Robin stated this was partially due to a century of inflation), and that Luffy was pinned with the murder of Vegapunk while the giant captains were framed for attacking Egghead. However, as Robin examined the article, she noticed that the picture of Luffy in Gear 5 had an oddly prominent "X" mark on his arm. The conversation soon turned to Hajrudin, with the giants claiming that he had wanted to pick them up, but an internal issue in Elbaph had prevented them: The evil giant prince, Loki, had escaped his punishment of crucifixion, killed his father, the previous giant king, Harald, and consumed his legendary Devil Fruit, which had forced virtually every giant in Elbaph to mobilize to stop and imprison him. The giants had dubbed him the "Accursed Prince" and the "Shame of Elbaph", and fear the day he is released would spell the end of the world.[5] Later, Robin had Brook give her a haircut, resembling the way she had had it prior to the timeskip, in hopes of allowing Saul to remember her more easily.[6]

Back with Luffy's group, they found themselves having escaped to a giant-sized castle atop a mountain, with the only route to or from it being a giant-sized rope suspension bridge. Just as the Straw Hats decided to depart, they had to quickly hide themselves, as they saw two other giants crossing the bridge: Gerd and Goldberg of the New Giant Warrior Pirates. The Straw Hats remained hidden as they did not know them, while the two giants discussed Road's shameful behavior. Gerd's pet owl, Piper had seen Muginn bringing the Thousand Sunny to Road, and they decided to confront him about actively bringing intruders into Elbaph. After the giants walked by, the Straw Hats traversed the bridge themselves; although partway across, Luffy decided to enter the forest below, in order to investigate a voice he had been sensing.[5] The rest of the crew kept going down the bridge, until Usopp realized that they were being pursued by an unfamiliar giant with lightning burns, who was in turn being pursued by the two other giants who were carrying the Sunny. Realizing that the burnt giant was probably the fake Sun God, Zoro wanted to fight, but the rest, seeing that the end of the bridge was close at hand, decided to make a sprint to the end.[6]

Luffy found a blindfolded and chained up giant who sensed Luffy and demanded to know who he was. Luffy introduced himself as the future Pirate King, and when he asked the giant in turn who he was and where they were, the giant declared he was Loki, the self-proclaimed Sun God, and that they were in Elbaph.[5] After getting confirmation that they were indeed on Elbaph, Luffy started to chatter one-sidedly until Loki yelled at him to be quiet, before asking the human to free him. He explained he had been chained to the Treasure Tree Adam with Seastone chains, in the lowest part of Elbaph called the Underworld for the past six years, and that if he were freed, he would promise to destroy a single pirate crew on Luffy's behalf. Loki's massive pets, as well as a group of humans who had survived after picking a fight with Elbaph, emerged from the forest, and Loki threatened to have them attack Luffy if he did not cooperate. However, both the humans and giants were shocked when Luffy instantly tamed the giant beasts. When the humans mentioned Shanks, Luffy immediately started inquiring about him, but Loki made the bad decision to mock the Emperor as a coward, causing Luffy to immediately enter Gear 4 and attack him in anger. Loki managed to dodge the attack and took back what he had said in order to prevent angering Luffy further, but when Luffy continued his inquiry, the prince stated he was not going to answer anything more for free. Elsewhere in the Underworld, Hajrudin and Stansen had hunted down a "moose", which they carried with them, intending to feed it to the Straw Hats.[6]

After making a promise to Loki and being sworn to secrecy, Luffy went back to the rope bridge, where he encountered Gerd and Goldberg carrying the Sunny. The giants warmly welcomed him and inquired about what he had been doing in the Underworld. Luffy was afraid to answer, but the two giants retracted their question as they mistook his reaction for a person who had experienced something traumatic. They soon came across the rest of the Straw Hats, who had trapped Road under a tree in a forest in the Sun World. Gerd and Goldberg then struck Road with their weapons as punishment for capturing the Straw Hats. Having reunited, the Straw Hats headed to the nearest giant village in excitement, alongside their new giant hosts. Offshore from Elbaph, the Giant Warrior Pirates finally reached the island and sailed up a rainbow to directly reach the Sun World, meeting up with Hajrudin and Stansen on the way. As they sailed up the rainbow, the giants explained to the humans various things about Elbaph, such as how they "drew" the sailable rainbow with cubes called Painters, and that Elbaph was split into three tiers by the Treasure Tree Adam: the Underworld, which is the island base; the Sun World, which resides on the lower level of branches; and the Heaven World, which lies on the canopy. They soon reached the village at about the same time as their separated crew members, with every human marveling at the beauty and scale of the Western Village.[7]

As seen in a flashback 22 years ago, after the Ohara Incident, Spandine's lies and the World Government smear campaign against Robin had caused her to live a hellish life, and even contemplated suicide, with only the final words of Saul and her mother stopping her from doing so. In the present day, Straw Hats continued marveling at Elbaph, with Lilith stating how the islands climate is perfect for the clouds, rainbows, and even bubbles. Road was beaten up and crucified for his antics. Hajrudin then introduced his crew to Luffy and carried the Straw Hats to a feast for them. However, Robin first wanted to meet with Saul, so the rest of the Straw Hats decided to tag along, and Gerd took them all in her svarr to the Warrior's Spring, next to the Owl Library, where Saul was a teacher who mainly taught history.

A giant announced that Saul had collapsed, but Robin just giggled and approached Saul by herself. Just as she came before him, Saul reenacted their first meeting by suddenly roaring at her, though Robin expected it. The two discussed Nico Olvia, Vegapunk's broadcast, and the Ohara Incident. The flames from the bombardment of the Buster Call had melted Kuzan's ice, and Saul had fallen into the ocean, which allowed him to live. When Saul expressed his anger about the smear campaign against her, Robin stated that she did not want to hear any more bad things, and instead wished to be praised for staying alive, with the giant hugging her and complying. This caused Robin to remember the painful times she went through, so she broke down and started crying about how much she had missed him. Saul also cried and returned the sentiment, which caused the other Straw Hats to burst into tears as Luffy happily looked on warmly.[8]

Luffy thanked Saul for what he did for Robin, and Saul knew that the Straw Hats were the friends he was hoping Robin would be able to find. Saul also thanked the Straw Hats for protecting Robin and was impressed that they became a crew within the Four Emperors. Lilith then greeted Saul, introducing herself as Vegapunk, and revealed she brought a clone of the original Vegapunk from Egghead with interest in building a new lab on Elbaph. The other giant who first told the Straw Hats about Saul introduced herself as Ange, a librarian at the Owl Library. She offered to give the Straw Hats a tour of the Walrus School founded by Saul 20 years ago while Saul took Robin, Chopper, Bonney, and Lilith to the Owl Library.

When the Straw Hats got to the school, they were told that the giant children were not supposed to act like fearsome fighters. The biology teacher Ripley explained that Elbaph's reputation as a kingdom of warriors was 100 years in the past, because the king Harald wanted Elbaph to trade with other countries instead of pillaging them. Ange also said that Harald had a dream to reform Elbaph, but after his son killed him, the country had no ruler. Meanwhile, Saul showed his group the Owl Library, where every book could be gigantified, and it had every book the giants collected after Ohara's destruction, which brought Robin to tears.[9] Saul explained that the power which gigantified the books was because of the chief librarian Biblo, who could do so thanks to the Iku Iku no Mi.[10]

In the Underworld, Loki had a conversation with a mysterious person named Mosa over a Den Den Mushi. Loki discussed a tragic incident that involved Mosa and stated that he would have killed everyone present if he was in their place. The two then argued where Mosa thought Loki expressed some kindless when acting violent, but he angrily shouted at them and told them to wait until he escaped from imprisonment. While the giants were partying at the Western Village in the Sun World, two hooded figures arrived inside the large castle through magic circles.[9]

Colon attacks Luffy.

At the Walrus School, Luffy rode a giant swing with Usopp and some giant children, but his desire to swing very high frightened the giants and led to him being punished by Nami. Suddenly, Colon arrived and started to launch an attack against Luffy. He tried to swing his sword at Luffy, but it easily broke and Luffy countered with Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun, which knocked Colon off balance while missing him. Colon was left amazed by Luffy's strength, but the other schoolchildren got angry at them both for causing a fight. Colon then revealed to the Straw Hats that he was the son of Ripley and a human father, who used to be a brave pirate, but did not marry Ripley because of their differences in aging. When the Straw Hats visited the Owl Library, Gerd gave them new outfits, and Luffy told them to meet up at the village while Lilith and Bonney chose to stay.

Back in the Aurust Castle, the two hooded figures were confronted by two giant guards, and said they were searching for Loki. The guards replied that the castle was empty and that they could not give away where he was. In response, the hooded figure used a barrage of projectiles against one of the guards to incapacitate him and demanded once more where Loki was.

In the Western Village, the Straw Hats arrived to the party held by the giants to celebrate them helping their pirate crews in the past and for defeating Kaidou and Big Mom. The party was then visited by Jarul, the oldest giant in the world, but Luffy noticed that there was a sword piercing his helmet.[10] While the Straw Hats were celebrating, Road appeared and apologized for his actions, and explained it was because of his dream to be the "Sun God" and rule the world. This sparked an argument among the giants about who the Sun God really was. According to Jarul, this was because of Elbaph's ancient religious text known as the Harley, and there were many interpretations of it because nobody could accurately translate it. What the giants know is that the world was destroyed twice before, and Nika was closely related to those events, but his role was unknown. Jarul also believed that Harald and Loki had their morals because of who they thought Nika was. The giants said that ever since Loki's birth, Elbaph experienced constant destruction and misfortune, and it was prophesized even before his birth that he would kill Harald. After his birth, the "Horse of Fortune" mysteriously died, and a year later, the queen was dead as well. Jarul got stabbed through the head when he and other giants tried to stop Loki, and it was only six years ago when he was defeated by Shanks. This encouraged Luffy to go and free Loki from imprisonment, as they made a deal where Loki would tell Luffy where Shanks was in return for freeing him. Afterwards, Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and Road went to the Aurust Castle where they could find the key.

The two figures from Aurust Castle managed to track down Loki in the Underworld, where they offered him to join the Knights of God, but Loki refused as he believed it would put him to the same level of scum as the World Nobles. One of the figures asked about the agents they sent to Elbaph, but the opposite figure, revealed to be Gunko and a member of the Knights of God, said that they suddenly lost contact after encountering a giant crow. Gunko used her ability to wrap a strip around a giant wolf and offered to spare it if Loki accepted the offer. Loki refused again and let them kill the wolf, using it as motivation for him to accomplish his goal of ending the world.[11]

Luffy's group arrived at the Aurust Castle in search of the keys to Loki's chains, remarking that the outside had been damaged recently. On their way in, Road said that Loki had killed his father and a hundred other warriors in a vicious battle, and only Jarul survived. They then came across a portrait of Harald, and Road said that he was considered Elbaph's greatest king and ripped out his horns due to him possessing the blood of Ancient Giants from a time of war. He also revealed that Hajrudin was Loki's half-brother, who grew up away from the royal family because his mother was not from Elbaph. He admitted feeling sorry for Hajrudin and wanted to help him achieve his dream of uniting all giants.

Cerberus' heads stab Loki.

Cerberus' heads stab Loki.

Back in the Underworld, Gunko tortured Loki to get him to accept in joining the Knights of God but was unsuccessful. Gunko's associate told her to stop, and that they should contact Mary Geoise for help. The person is identified as Figarland Shamrock, the commander of the Knights of God and the son of Figarland Garling. He declared that the powerful warriors of Elbaph would be brought under control of the World Government no matter what.[12] As the two left, Loki mentioned Shamrock's resemblance to Shanks, to which Shamrock responded that Shanks was his younger twin brother and returned to Mary Geoise at some point, but ultimately gave up his birthright and resided in the lower world. But after Loki tried issuing threats, Shamrock decided to finish off Loki by summoning Cerberus from his saber. The two then left on a bird-like construct created by Gunko's power as the swords in Cerberus' heads brutally stab Loki. Shamrock decided that they should move on to capture Elbaph's children and told Gunko to call someone to assist them.

Inside Aurust Castle, Luffy's group found the two giant guards that were victims of Shamrock and Gunko. The guards claimed that one of them was Shanks, but Luffy refused to believe them. They instead suggested that it could be someone who looked like Shanks, and Luffy said that in his experience, Shanks never mentioned his family. Meanwhile, someone else approached the outside of the castle.

Elbaph's ancient mural.

Elbaph's ancient mural.

Ripley took Franky on a tour of Elbaph's Treasure Tree Adam. They came across an ancient mural that was carved during the Void Century and had depicted wars between races. At the Owl Library, Saul showed Robin and Chopper the Harley, the ancient text that explained Elbaph's myths and legends, and because it is very old, there were many interpretations of who the Sun God was. The book was written in three chapters, each depicting a period of history as a "world", with the third world describing the present and future. Based on Robin's reading, the first world was engulfed in fire, death, and darkness. The second world was filled with war, and those of both the half-moon and moon dreamed. The third world mentions the Sun God dancing and laughing and guiding the world.[13]

While Luffy's group continued through Aurust Castle, they reached the Throne Room and found a magic circle, but they could not figure out how it appeared. Suddenly, they heard a voice and were attacked by a swinging axe. The person was on the throne and revealed to be "Ya-san", a human resident of Elbaph and a former pirate. He claimed he came to the castle due to sensing some powerful Haki, and he heard stories about Luffy before. He was also Ripley's partner and Colon's father. When Luffy told him he wanted to free Loki, Ya-san warned him to be careful. Luffy's group continued while ignoring him, but it made Ya-san smile and think back to when he served under Gol D. Roger, who also ignored his warnings. He told Road to push the throne, which revealed an empty treasure room below with the key to Loki's chains intact. Ya-san said that not even the thieves wanted to set Loki free and challenged Luffy to a battle with the key as the reward.

In the Western Village, Oimo told the Straw Hats that in the Roger Pirates, there was a powerful pirate who had similar strength to both Roger and his right hand Silvers Rayleigh. During a trip to the mountains to get Roger to a hospital, the pirate defeated hundreds and pirates with just his two axes, also destroying every tree in the area, which earned him the epithet "Mountain-Eater". He began living in Elbaph for over 20 years under the alias of "Ya-san", and his real identity is revealed as the "Left Hand of the Pirate King", Scopper Gaban.[14]

Luffy told Gaban that he refused to fight and tried to take the key away from him, but Gaban avoided all of his attacks and countered with his own. Gaban used his axes to create a powerful wind attack, but Luffy was saved when Zoro went to assist him. Before Luffy and Zoro could strike, Gaban stopped fighting and surrendered the key, acknowledging how powerful the two were. Before Gaban left, he told the Straw Hats to come visit him if Elbaph was still safe. Although the group was still annoyed at him, Gaban smiled as he thought back to a conversation with Shanks, being told to have trust in Luffy.

Disaster Strikes: The Knights of God Attack[]

Shamrock and Gunko arrived near the Walrus School, and Gunko used her ability to create a magic circle and summon another member of the Knights of God. Instead, two members appeared out of the circle: Saint Sommers of the Shepherd Family and Saint Killingham of the Rimoshifu Family. When Shamrock wondered why two members appeared, Killingham said it was because Shamrock had to return to Mary Geoise after what took place during the Levely. Once the Knights were told about their assignment, Shamrock said that they could use their powers to turn it into a "game".[15]

While Ripley and Franky were at the Treasure Tree Adam, she told him that all homes of Elbaph were on the branches of the tree and showed him a cut branch where the Haugen Village used to be. The branch used to get caught on fire from a lightning strike, and the only way to stop the fire from spreading was to remove the end of the branch, which Ripley noted as part of Elbaph's greatest weaknesses being fire and lightning.

The Straw Hats and Road left the Aurust Castle on their Svarr, taking the two giant guards with them. Nami went back to the Western Village where the giants and other Straw Hats were partying, while Luffy and Zoro went off on their own. Sanji noticed Gerd was missing and went to go find her. Somewhere nearby, Gerd was treating the guards' injuries and wondered if Road was responsible. Although Road tried to act secretive about the situation, Gerd bashed him with her axe and forced him to explain why he was really at the castle.

Loki stands up.

Loki stands up.

In the Underworld, Luffy and Zoro noticed Loki was weakened and all of the surrounding animals were attacked. Zoro was hesitant to free Loki as the giants spoke of how monstrous he was, Luffy convinced him to unlock all of his seastone chains except for one on his leg. Suddenly, they noticed in the sky the New Giant Warrior Pirates and Sanji in a falling Svarr, having been informed by Road of what the two were trying to do. Luffy managed to save them from falling, yet the impact still left most of them injured. When they got back, Hajrudin told Luffy not to free Loki as he was violent and cunning. But to everyone's horror, Loki regained consciousness and started to stand up and grab his hammer.[16]

At the Walrus School, the students were being attacked by an enormous snake monster called Jörmungandr. The students were saved when Jörmungandr was defeated by Saul and Principal Kiba, a former member of the Giant Warrior Pirates. When they got inside the school, the gym teacher Wolf was heavily injured and covered in blood, who said that the schoolchildren were sleepwalking somewhere and would not wake up, and he also advised Saul to not touch them. More of the children began to fall asleep as Saul and Kiba noticed other gigantic monsters were appearing outside of the school.

In the Underworld, Loki threatened everyone to remove the last chain on his leg if they wanted Elbaph to be safe, otherwise he would cause trouble again. When they refused, Loki struck the Treasure Tree Adam with his hammer, causing a lightning strike and a massive fire to appear above in the Sun World.

The Walrus School is attacked by gigantic monsters.

Ange told Saul and Kiba that she knew exactly how the gigantic monsters were appearing at the Walrus School. During a class session, she tasked the students with drawing pictures of whatever they feared the most. As it turns out, the monsters that were attacking Elbaph were brought to life from the children's imaginations. While the Knights of God had managed to prepare their attack, Sommers asked Gunko what her biggest fear was, and she replied that it was Nika.[17]

While the students were sleepwalking away from the Walrus School, Saul, Robin, and Chopper went over to them. Despite Wolf's warning to not touch the kids, Saul did not know why as he tried to move them. When he tried to move Ylva, Saul was poked by an invisible vine of thorns wrapped around her. Meanwhile, Ange messaged the giants at the Western Village that the children were sleepwalking towards Branch Route 8 where a wildfire had started. A Svarr of firefighters went to try and extinguish the fire but was knocked away by one of the monsters.

Meanwhile, the Knights of God continued discussing their plan to capture the students. At that moment, Sommers revealed he ate the Iba Iba no Mi Devil Fruit, which allowed him to generate thorns and stop Saul from saving the students. Killingham is also revealed to be a user of the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Kirin fruit, which allowed him to make the students fall asleep and bring their nightmares to life. During the discussion, Gunko warned Sommers and Killingham that they would have to get through the Straw Hat Pirates, who she knew were present on Elbaph.

In the Underworld, Loki again threatened the Monster Trio and the New Giant Warrior Pirates to surrender, or he would kill those in the Sun World. Luffy stepped up and fought Loki with enough force to knock him down without worsening his wounds. He asked the giants to help heal Loki, which Gerd accepted. Luffy noticed Loki's horns were real just like his father's, as a mark of the ancient giants. This reminded Hajrudin of when he got chastised by Loki and the giants in his childhood because his mother was an outsider, so he decided he would kill Loki for his past actions. Upon hearing this, Loki went to deny Hajrudin's belief that he killed Harald for cruel reasons.[18]

While Franky and Ripley continued their tour, they found an old facility which had already been discovered by Lilith and Bonney. Lilith estimated that the facility was at least 3,000 years old and said she would use it as her base of operations. Before Franky decided to check it out, an MMA monster had ambushed them. Everyone in the Western Village had been informed by the two castle guards that there were two human intruders, one resembling Shanks, and may be behind the kidnappings. The Straw Hats decided that they would go help save the children. Colon wanted to come with them, so they boarded a Svarr together.

Saul attempted again to save the students without getting stabbed by the invisible thorns around them. He eventually succeeded in safely getting Bjorn out of the way but was forced to let him go in order to take down another of the MMA monsters targeting them. Meanwhile, the giants around the village were struggling to take down all of the monsters together. However, the Giant Warrior Pirates had arrived in time to deal with the monsters and were being assisted by Gaban.[19]

Down in the Underworld, a massive groggysaurus tried to attack the giants, but Goldberg used his shield Nash to block its bite and allow for Zoro and Sanji to defeat it. As they went back to Loki, Goldberg explained that his shield Nash came alive one day as a homie after his father went to take down Big Mom. While Loki was getting treated, he revealed that the Knights of God gave him his injuries. While they all ate, Loki talked with Luffy about wanting to see Shanks again, and remembered when he himself admired a pirate, Rocks D. Xebec, but could not join because he was too young.

The Giant Warrior Pirates and Gaban managed to take down the monsters in their path, but the firefighters were struggling to extinguish the fire where the students were walking. As it seemed things were hopeless, Jinbe unleashed a technique called Umigumo Ipponzeoi, using the sea clouds to extinguish the fire and save the students, although they kept walking.

As Colon and the Straw Hats celebrated, they were suddenly encountered by Gunko, who intended to capture Colon as well.[20] She affirmed she was one of those responsible for kidnapping the kids and planned to bring them to Mary Geoise, and referred to herself as a god. Brook realized she may rank higher than the World Nobles, being part of the Knights of God. The Straw Hats began to fight her, but none of their attacks managed to work. Usopp's attack appeared to have destroyed part of her body, but she was shown to have regenerated it in a similar manner to the Five Elders. During the fight, Gunko mentioned that the world is heading towards a great war, and Elbaph's participation will likely determine the victors. In the end, Gunko managed to defeat the Straw Hats and take Colon as a hostage.

Sommers takes down Saul.

Sommers takes down Saul.

Elsewhere, Killingham had incapacitated those still present at the Walrus School and hijacked its transmission system to make an announcement. Sommers took down Saul with his thorn abilities, unaware that Robin and Chopper were hiding inside his hair. As Saul collapsed, Sommers cursed King Harald for trying to turn Elbaph away from its status as warriors and that it was his fault that things had screwed up.[21] Robin remembered Saul saying beforehand that Sommers was part of the Knights of God, meaning he was also "immortal" and could not be defeated.

Meanwhile, Gunko had rounded up the Straw Hats and made them unable to move. She went over to Brook and said she would make him dedicated to writing songs for her, which shocked the Straw Hats that she likes his music. Brook, however, said that he held loyalty to nobody but Luffy, which prompted Gunko to angrily kick him.

At that moment, Killingham commenced with his message to Elbaph that ten giant children, including Colon, were being held as hostages. The sleeping children woke up and were informed by Colon that they were being kidnapped. Meanwhile, the Giant Warrior Pirates attempted to go save the kids but were overwhelmed by MMA monsters resembling giant mothers, resulting in the crew crashing into a nearby forest. Sommers continued the announcement, mentioning that they would kill the children unless the giants fulfilled their demands to destroy the Owl Library and Walrus School, and give the World Government total rule over Elbaph, as he left the decision for Jarul to make. Upon hearing this announcement, Gaban and Robin went into action, declaring they would not let anything happen.[22]

The Knights of God started by sending Ronja towards the edge of the branch, and pressured Jarul to make a decision. Meanwhile, Robin told Chopper she would go and confront Sommers herself, even though she did not know the full extent of his abilities. After Franky, Ripley, and the Giant Warrior Pirates met up, they decided to go together and rescue the children.

While Sommers was continuing with the announcement, Robin attacked Sommers with Craspedia and subsequently broke his body with Clutch, but Sommers was unaffected. Robin resorted to taking Sommers and forcing them both to fall down. It turns out Robin used a decoy to lure Sommers out of the Straw Hats' range, though Sommers saved himself using a vine to hang on. During the transmission, Ronja claimed to Jarul that it would be fine if she fell down if it meant the school and library would continue to exist. With one second left before Ronja fell, Jarul ordered for the school and library to be destroyed in order to spare her. Afterwards, Sommers managed to incapacitate Robin with his vines and prepared to attack her, but his hand was suddenly sliced off, as he fearfully realized Gaban had targeted him.[23]

Gaban launched another attack at Sommers, forcing the latter to defend himself. As Gaban and Sommers fought each other, the Straw Hats noted his true identity as Colon's father and his former position within the Roger Pirates. By the end of the fight, Gaban sliced Sommers in half and left to go save the kids. Chopper followed right behind him, knowing he had a way to bypass Sommers' immortal abilities.

Gaban is defeated by Gunko.

Gaban is defeated by Gunko.

After the school and library began to burn down, Gunko allowed Ronja to return safely. At that point, Gaban had arrived where the kids were, but upon proclaiming out loud that Gaban was Colon's father, Gunko threatened to kill Colon if he did anything. Gaban, knowing that he could not save Colon in time, surrendered himself without a fight. Gunko then shot arrows through Gaban, forcing him to fall down to the Underworld.

While the kids cried out for Gaban, Gunko suddenly felt a lost memory where she was with Brook. But as she went to Brook in a hurry, Imu disrupted her movement and took control over her body. Imu told the Knights of God that they were running out of time to complete their mission, as the Holy Land Mary Geoise was in a sea of fire. They claimed that they would help assist them, as Gunko's eyes suddenly changed to Imu's and her hair became longer.[24]

As the giants finally came, they tried to rescue the kids. However, they were stabbed by the invisible thorns and Imu unleashed a burst of Supreme King Haki, knocking most of them out, and using a magic circle to blast away the adults. Imu gave instructions to Sommers and Killingham to go after the children, as Sommers managed to get up and reform his body, although he still felt damage from Gaban's attack.

Imu transforms the giants into demons.

Imu transforms the giants into demons.

Shortly after, Imu was confronted by the Giant Warrior Pirates. Brogy grabbed hold of Imu while the others went to free the kids. In response, Imu summoned a book and pulled out a dagger and a pistol to take down Brogy, taking his left arm. Next, Imu used A Kuwaru and Domi Reversi to perform a process that turned him into a demon, granting him a body with enhanced strength and a mind of evil. Soon after, Imu spread this technique to the other members of the crew, transforming them into demons as well. With the crew and MMA monsters under the influence of these powers, Imu commanded them to go kill Jarul and have Dorry and Brogy become the new rulers of Elbaph. While in the Western Village, the giants told Jarul to run away, but he refused, stating that warriors do not run from battle.[25]

Chopper fell down the Underworld and managed to use Guard Point to save Gaban from dying. Everyone else in the Underworld were made aware of their fall, so Hajrudin, Stansen, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji went to help them. Meanwhile, Loki received another call from Mosa on the Den Den Mushi. Mosa told Loki that they would not be able to talk for a while, but thanked him for their conversations together. Although Loki was concerned about what happened with Mosa, the call ended. When everyone else came back, they asked Gerd to treat Gaban as he also had serious wounds. Eventually, Luffy was shocked to find out that Gaban once served in the Roger Pirates. Chopper told everyone that giant monsters were attacking the Sun World, and a group of strong people were trying to kidnap the children. Just then, everyone felt Imu's massive burst of Supreme King Haki, which indicated to them that they needed to make their move.

Kashii and the other giant pirates tried to reason with Dorry, Brogy, and the others under the influence of Imu's powers to not go after Jarul, but they only replied that they would kill him and rule over Elbaph in a new era of war and ruthlessness. Shortly afterward, Thormann and other giants were transformed into demons, prompting the other giants to retreat. Ripley decided she was going to save Colon after hearing that Gaban was defeated. The kids at Branch Route 8 soon fell back asleep and Killingham manifested another group of imaginary demons. Using his power, Killingham changed into his hybrid form and led the MMA monsters to rampage across Elbaph. Both Sommers and Killingham reported to Imu that their orders had begun, and Imu commanded them to continue until the heart of Elbaph breaks, mentioning that Elbaph would have been subjugated years ago if not for Harald's failure.[26]

The giants prepared a lift to get from the Underworld to the Sun World. Gerd and Chopper stayed behind to take care of Loki and Gaban, respectively. Gaban told Luffy how he could make use of his Supreme King Haki, claiming that the Knights of God are, in fact, not immortal. Loki stood up and asked to come with them, believing he could help fight. Hajrudin refused to let him join, reminding him of his past crimes and the possibility that he would turn against Elbaph again. Luffy then offered Loki to join his crew since Elbaph did not appear to want him, but Loki angrily refused, and Hajrudin said he would not let it happen. Before it was time to get on the lift, Gaban told Hajrudin to release Loki. He mentioned that when he was with Shanks, he sensed powerful Haki on the day Harald was killed at the castle, although they did not witness everything. After hearing this, Zoro, Sanji, Stansen, Road, and Goldberg took the lift while everyone else stayed behind, as Hajrudin gave Loki three minutes to explain what really happened in the past.

Harald and Rocks: A Struggle for Peace[]

Elbaph's guards impale Harald.

Elbaph's guards impale Harald.

14 years ago, both Loki and Jarul were summoned for a meeting with King Harald at the Aurust Castle. Loki openly expressed his disagreement with Harald's policies regarding peace and criticized Jarul for following them. When they got to the Throne Room, they unexpectedly witnessed Harald being impaled by all of the guards. Meanwhile, Shanks visited Gaban and his family in the Sun World. Shanks mentioned that he met Harald at Mary Geoise in the past and got along with him. There was also something he needed to discuss with Harald outside of Mary Geoise before it was too late. A large massacre soon took place in Aurust Castle, which led to Jarul being stabbed, Elbaph's legendary Devil Fruit being discovered, and Harald and many warriors perishing.

109 years before the present, the Giant Warrior Pirates were considered the most frightening group on the sea. At the same time, Harald, who became the king at age 45, enjoyed causing destruction to others whenever he pleased, which made the world show even more fear towards Elbaph and the giant race as a whole.[27] Back when Harald was a prince, he led a crazy childhood alongside Dorry and Brogy. Because of his royal status and ancient giant blood, he became extremely arrogant. As he left Elbaph on a royal ship, he remarked that everyone outside of the country was very weak.

One day, Harald sailed near the Bunt Kingdom and spotted the giant Ida as part of a circus attraction. Believing that the humans had captured Ida, Harald and his followers decimated the kingdom and brought her along with them. But Ida slapped Harald and explained that those humans had saved her from dying, and she scolded Harald for looking down on humans because of his superior size. They then returned to the Bunt Kingdom to help reconstruct it. As Harald began to socialize with humans and learn from Ida, he had been influenced into taking Elbaph towards a more peaceful direction and treating humans more fairly.

105 years before the present, Harald announced to Elbaph's citizens that he wished to build connections with other nations and learn from their cultures in order to improve their own lives, without solving their problems with violence. 24 years later, Harald and Ida had their child Hajrudin in the Fisherman Village, but Harald could not marry Ida because she was born outside of Elbaph, though she and Hajrudin were still allowed to stay in the country.

Some time later, Harald was put in an arranged marriage with his queen, Estrid, a giant with ancient blood who was born in Elbaph's Brewers Village. Estrid gave Harald the "House of Fortune" Asla to use as a steed, while issuing multiple other orders, claiming they would bring Harald good luck. Later, Harald took more trips outside of Elbaph to help make trade easier and told others about his travels.

Loki climbs up from the Underworld.

63 years before the present, while Harald was still away, Estrid gave birth to their child Loki. But when Estrid looked at his eyes, she immediately became horrified and demanded for him to be killed. When those around her refused, she tossed Loki down into the Underworld. But Loki managed to survive and began climbing back up the tree. Eventually, Estrid fell sick and remembered the prophecy that Loki was going to kill Harald, though the guards did not believe her. At the same time, Harald was struggling to maintain relations with other countries because of the World Government's interference. In the following years, Elbaph's misfortunes were blamed on Loki's "curse".[28]

Later in the year of Loki's birth, "Waterfall Beard" Jorul was killed by Linlin, and natural disasters began to affect Elbaph to the point of a famine, with Estrid continuing to blame Loki for all of it. Just then, Loki burst into the chamber to see her, but the guards forced him to keep away from her. Conflicts between Elbaph's villages also kept the country divided, and many citizens had died in the chaos. One of the giants even tried to make Hajrudin a sacrifice due to his connection to Loki, but was stopped when Harald came back.

Many ships send aid to Elbaph.

Harald announced to the citizens that he had negotiated with other countries to help send aid to Elbaph, and soon enough, many ships arrived with food to help Elbaph overcome its famine. After Queen Estrid died, Harald met his son Loki, but was told by the guards that he had an eye condition, in order to hide his eyes. At his young age, Loki gave up on love and was looked after by Estrid's older brother as his regent while Harald was busy helping to unify Elbaph. Meanwhile, Ida decided to open a bar in the Underworld to help Harald.

56 years before the present, Harald visited Jarul's house and spoke with him about the recent Levely. Harald had snuck in thanks to a fellow king, but the council did not hear him out. In the end, he managed to escape without getting caught because of attention towards a murder incident there. Jarul also told Harald about the Galleila, a group of giant warrior shipwrights that were captured, as well as an army of giants that were frozen and hidden somewhere. Jarul suspected that Harald's ideals may not be working because of Elbaph's previous actions. Later on, Asla, and eventually Loki's regent, mysteriously died.

48 years before the present, Harald had united Elbaph by constructing the Branch Routes and bringing trade between villages, earning him love and admiration from his fellow countrymen (meanwhile, Hajrudin would get spurned for not being Harald's legitimate heir). One day, while Harald was out travelling, prince Loki emerged with a group of wild animals to cause destruction into the Western Village. Hajrudin tried to stop Loki, but the latter easily defeated him, then proceeded to mock his half-brother, as well as the other children that came for Hajrudin's aid, for being weak and reliant on others as he resumed his rampage. Despite Loki continuing to bring harm and destruction to his own people, he never gained enough satisfaction from those acts of violence. Eventually, Loki tried to commit suicide by falling down to the Underworld, in a manner similar to how his mother attempted to murder him as an infant, but cried that he was unable to die due to his inherent toughness.

Soon after, Loki encountered Rocks D. Xebec, as well as Edward Newgate, Shiki, and Buckingham Stussy, who were having trouble finding their way to the Sun World. Rocks decided to ask Loki if they were at Elbaph and could find Harald there, indirectly threatening the giant kid.[29] After getting answers and figuring out that Loki was indeed Harald's son, Rocks ordered the boy to immediately call his father back to the island, but this only managed to anger Loki in the process. Rocks then decided to seriously injure Loki with a fierce blow from his sword in order to force a situation where Harald would feel obliged to return.

Rocks and Harald had previously met each other during the Levely that took place 56 years before the present. Rocks had somehow managed to invade Mary Geoise and infiltrate Imu's quarters, the Room of Flowers, following a hostage situation where the pirate had taken five kings captive. Having been unsuccessful in persuading Imu into submitting to his demands, Rocks left while swearing that he would eventually return. During his escape, Rocks stumbled into the similarly intruding Harald, leading to a brief, but explosive clash. With no choice but to work together with Rocks to avoid being enslaved, Harald blasted a way through Mary Geoise and jumped off the Red Line with his new associate in tow.

Rocks trying to convince Harald into joining him.

Rocks trying to convince Harald into joining him.

As the years passed since then, Rocks would start building a formidable group of pirates with the intent of taking over Hachinosu and, eventually, the world itself. With Harald learning of Loki's injuries, he returned to his country immediately to look after his son, bringing Rocks and his companions (also including Ochoku, Don Marlon and Ganzui) to Aurust Castle while at it. Not thrilled at all with Rocks' presence, Harald refused to become part of his crew when invited by the future pirate captain, citing that such a thing would clash with his own ideals for Elbaph's standing in the world. Questioning the loyalties of the people Rocks had gathered under him, Harald also learned that none of them had any real interest in their supposed leader, but rather the Hachinosu riches his scheme would bring. For the next years, Rocks would keep coming to Elbaph in new attempts to convince Harald into joining his group, only to be met with unwavering refusal, although his ambitions to rule the whole world gained him the admiration of young Loki. Even without having Harald around like he initially wanted, Rocks successfully managed to conquer Hachinosu, as he intended, four years later.[30]

Meanwhile, the Roger Pirates, Kuja Pirates and Monkey D. Garp started building notable reputations during those years. In particular, Shakuyaku of the Kuja would grow immensely popular, even more than her superior Gloriosa, and infatuate no less than the future Pirate King Gol D. Roger, who sought to have her as a crewmate. As for Rocks, he officially founded the Rocks Pirates and converted Hachinosu into his new base of operations, earning himself massive fame in the world of pirates and attracting several renowned criminals into his crew's ranks, including the likes of Charlotte Linlin, John, Kaidou and Kyo. Rocks informed his gang about the necessary steps he needed to accomplish before he could realize his ultimate goal, claiming that he still needed two specific Devil Fruits, the legendary Galleila band and King Harald in order to do so. In the meantime, Loki became more and more daring into trying to sail away from Elbaph in order to join Rocks after showing clear dissatisfaction with the path his own country was following.[31]

Harald attacks a government ship.

As Rocks and his crew spread their reign of terror through the New World, Harald himself would jeopardize his own nation's prospects of joining the World Government by attacking one of their battleships at Enishi, which were allied with Elbaph, in order to protect its citizens from imprisonment by government agents. The ensuing propaganda would portray Harald and Elbaph in a negative light, leading the giant king to shave his own hair as a gesture of good will. Later on, Harald discussed this incident with Rocks at Ida's Bar, with the pirate captain still insistent in having Harald under him. Meanwhile, the World Government remained cautious about having Elbaph at their side, only accepting a few giants into the Marines, but not seriously considering the idea of having the nation as an affiliate, much to the frustration of Vice-Admirals Garp, Sengoku and Tsuru.

A short time later, 42 years before present time, Shakuyaku of the Kuja Pirates would leave her crew and move to Hachinosu in order to open her own bar at the island, as a way to protect herself from the Marines. She quickly became beloved by the island's inhabitants, including Rocks and his crew, who came to consider the Kuja pirate and her bar Hachinosu's treasure. Still, the Roger Pirates would not give up on Shakuyaku, taking advantage of her bar's rules in order to get into Hachinosu for drinks with the Rocks Pirates, in spite of their intense rivalry.[32] Meanwhile, the Five Elders contacted Harald and gave him a new chance to earn the government's favor, under the condition of killing Rocks.[33]

Harald hesitated, but eventually agreed with the World Government's terms and decided to duel Rocks the next time he came to Elbaph, much to the latter's disappointment. The two men fought fiercely, but a conclusion was not reached. Rocks, however, officially gave up on recruiting Harald after this point, with both of them parting ways until a specific future incident. Meanwhile, 40 years before present time, the World Government set their sights upon a certain island in the West Blue following a tip from the Knights of God commander, Figarland Garling, who had made an important discovery there. A year later, a special pair of twin boys would be born on this exact island.[32]

The Island of Fate: The God Valley Incident[]

39 years before the present time, Don Marlon and the night security team of Hachinosu were wiped out by an unknown assailant who stormed the island in secret and kidnapped former empress Shakuyaku. Ochoku gleefully counted his money, profiting from the crime, but the majority of pirates across Pirate Island were left outraged and distraught. At sea, Roger received the news of Shakky's kidnapping with fury while Rayleigh trembled. The world as a whole experienced despair over this tragic event, with economic activity going stagnant for weeks afterwards.

A year after the kidnapping, Garling returned to God Valley to meet his lover and discovered his children with her, Shanks and Shamrock. While she was overjoyed at his return initially, Garling declared that the island would soon cease to exist and promptly stabbed her after explaining that he already had a candidate for a wife selected who would become his should he win the Native Hunting Competition that would ensue on the island. Several Marines disembarked on the island, a young Monkey D. Dragon among them, and began rounding up the civilians of God Valley for the competition. Meanwhile, slaves Ginny and Emporio Ivankov conspired to leak information about the competition to Morgans of the World Economy News Paper, with the information eventually making its way to the pirates of Hachinosu. The crew set off to God Valley - only to be intercepted by a giant ship from Elbaph commanded by Harald. Rocks and Harald spoke privately aboard the latter's ship, where Rocks revealed his true name to be Davy D. Xebec and that his wife, child, and entire secret clan were living in God Valley and that he intended to rescue them from the World Government. Rocks invited Harald once more to join him, but Harald refused, and after a brief clash with the Rocks Pirates, the giant's ship was set ablaze, and the pirates continued on their way. On God Valley the competition commenced just as Dragon discovered the mortally wounded mother of Shanks and Shamrock, who begged him to save her children.[34]

Loki's Horrible Day: The Truth Behind Harald's Demise[]

Story Impact[]

  • Jaguar D. Saul,[8] Jarul,[10] and Scopper Gaban[14] are reintroduced in the present for the first time.
  • According to the newspapers, Luffy killed Vegapunk with the help of the Giant Warrior Pirates. In response, Dorry and Brogy's bounties have been reactivated, with their pictures updated and raised to Beli1,800,000,000 each.[5]

Gunko states that the world as they know it will cease to exist once the war is over. They attempt to annex Elbaph in order to press the giants into their service because they know the nation will play a large role in the coming conflict.[21][26] During Harald's time, the pirate Rocks also attempted to gain Elbaph's support in his crusade against the government.[31] He gives up on trying to recruit Harald and ends their friendship after Harald accepted the Five Elders deal to join them if he kills Rocks.[33][32]
    • Harald ran into many roadblocks in his quests for diplomacy with other nations on account of the World Government, which opposes Elbaph's efforts toward pacifism because of the impending war.[21]
      • In relation to this, Jarul told Harald about the giant shipwright group Galleila. Active centuries ago, the group was eventually captured and imprisoned, which Jarul has alluded to the World Government's doing, suggesting that there may be an ancient enmity between Elbaph and the government. • While fighting to resist Imu's Domi Reversi, Rocks proclaimed that Davy D. Jones was the previous king of the World. As Imu tried to deny it, Rocks taunted them further by claiming Imu was afraid of Joy Boy and Davy Jones' "promise". Imu countered that they had found the perfect soldiers this time, the Giants of Elbaph and their "pliable king".[43]
        • Kuma rescued Teach and Eris while Garp and Roger confronted Rocks who begged them to kill him.[43]

    • God Valley sinks beneath the waves as every participant goes their own ways.[39]
    • The World Economy News Paper announces that Garp defeated the Rocks Pirates by himself. A recovering Garp is furious at this falsified news, though Sengoku is more understanding. They argue as Garp confirms to remain part of the Marines to root out corruption from the inside.[39]
  • After learning of Rocks' death, Harald tearfully proclaims he will never forgive any Giants who commit evil acts. He then goes to Marineford where he rips out his horns and publicly declares his intention to atone for the Giants' past by any means necessary.[39]
    • Harald is instructed by the World Government to destroy any pirate ships that sailed in the Grand Line. Sometime later, he meets the Five Elders and Knights of God at Mary Geoise where he is assigned as a Devoted Blade of God within the Knights of God. The Elders tell Harald that when he becomes a proper Knight, he will know the depths of the world, and Elbaph will become a member nation of the World Government. Garling tells Harald that he cannot tell anyone about his activity and that they will communicate while he is in the Lower World.[35]
    • Harald meets Imu in the Throne Room who grants him the Depths Covenant making him a Knight of God because Shanks was originally chosen to become one but went missing while completing a mission. Imu then orders Harald to make a fleet of Giant Warriors join the Navy, which Harald refuses and learns that he can't due the Depths Covenant. Realizing he's losing control and that the plan was always to enslave the warriors of Elbaph, Harald asks his guards to chain him to a pillar and call Loki and Jarul to Aurust Castle.[37] When he starts to lose of his body, Harald tells the guards to kill him, but his immortality prevents this as Loki and Jarul reach the castle. Harald reveals to Loki and Jarul the World Government had tricked him and tells Loki to eat the Devil Fruit that has been passed down in Elbaph as it is the only thing that can kill him and to tell the people of Elbaph the truth of what happened.
