One Piece Wiki

Saint Shamrock of the Figarland Family is a World Noble and the commander of the Knights of God. Born in God Valley, he is the son of Saint Figarland Garling, one of the Five Elders of the World Government,[2] and the older twin brother of Shanks, one of the Four Emperors.[3]

He acts as a minor antagonist in the Elbaph Arc, spearheading the Knights' mission to annex Elbaph and leading the initial invasion.

Appearance[]

Shamrock is a tall man of lean, muscular stature, sporting long red hair inherited from his mother, which is arranged in a small braid to the left side of his head and some facial stubble. Being his twin brother, he has a near identical physical resemblance to Shanks, with multiple characters remarking on the similarity and some even mistaking Shamrock for Shanks.[3] Unlike his brother, he does not have a triple set of scars over his left eye and still possesses both arms.

Befitting his status as a World Noble and Knight of God, Shamrock wears a regal ensemble consisting of a high-class black and gold military tailcoat fastened with frog closures, a pair of white trousers (with black straps on the left thigh), red gloves, thigh-high black metallic boots and a cravat wrapped over his neck. He keeps a golden saber over his left hip, held in place by a shoulder belt.

He frequently shrouds himself in a blue cloak while on the move.

Personality[]

As usual for a World Noble and Knight of God, Shamrock is very loyal to the World Government and tends to think little of those who do not share Celestial Dragon blood, considering them akin to commoners no matter their status.[3] Unlike most nobles though, who tend to act loud and impulsively when things do not go their way, Shamrock is more patient and calculating, preferring to first solve problems with dialogue before showing his true cruelty and employing more gruesome tactics when the former option fails.[6][2]

Shamrock is utterly ruthless against those who defy him and the World Nobles. Even family members are not spared from his prejudice if they do not adhere to Celestial Dragon ideals, as he looks down on his younger twin, Shanks, for mingling with people from the "lower world" instead of living at Mary Geoise.[3] Morally, he has no qualms about kidnapping children if it helps him achieve a certain goal, and in fact will even sadistically turn it into a game in order to make things more "interesting".[7]

Shanks[]

Shamrock is Shanks' older twin brother and refers to his younger sibling as "estranged". This indicates that Shamrock has an overall low opinion of Shanks, noting that the pirate voluntarily chose to abandon Mary Geoise as he got "attached to the filthy lower world", showing arrogance and a sort of superiority complex towards him, regardless of Shanks' reputation and infamy as one of the Four Emperors.[3]

Loki[]

Shamrock had a previous interest in recruiting the giant prince Loki within the ranks of the Knights of God, being aware of his strength and reputation.[6] Even with Loki's defiant attitude towards the World Nobles, Shamrock had his subordinate Gunko continuously torture the giant until he relented.

Eventually, Shamrock lost his patience and gave up on the recruiting,[2] having his Cerberus sword attack Loki as he decided to leave. This whole sequence of events earned him Loki's ire, who cursed Shamrock and the Celestial Dragons as he was left behind to endure Cerberus' attack.[3]

Abilities and Powers[]

As the commander of the Knights of God, Shamrock's authority over the group is second only to the Supreme Commander Figarland Garling.[2] It can be assumed that Shamrock has some combat ability, as he was able to inflinge serious damage to Loki with his sword. As with his fellow Knights of God, he has jurisdiction over standard World Nobles and acts as a sort of police force amongst them.

Shamrock possesses a saber which has acquired the power of an Awakened Mythical Zoan-type Cerberus (ケルベロス, Keruberosu?) Devil Fruit. The blade can turn into a three headed dog on command, which in turn have blades coming from its mouths. Even Loki, who is noted among the giants for his incredible strength, was fearful of getting stabbed by the blades.[3]

Dragon Flees With Shanks And Shamrock

Dragon flees with the infant Shanks and Shamrock.

Shamrock and his younger twin Shanks were born on God Valley as the sons of an unnamed red-haired woman and the Knight of God and World Noble Figarland Garling.[4] When he was a mere 1-year-old infant, Garling returned to God Valley and stabbed their mother intending right after meeting them.[11] At the request of their dying mother, a young Marine named Monkey D. Dragon located and ran off with Shanks and Shamrock as she passed away. With the Rocks Pirates and Roger Pirates making landfall on the island, Dragon used the chance to flee to safety with the twins in hand.[12] However despite his efforts, Shamrock was taken from Dragon by Maffey of the Satchels Family, who was sent to retrieve the children after Dragon swiped them, and Shamrock was ultimately taken to Mary Geoise, while his twin, who ended up hidden and ignored by Maffey, was left behind in a treasure chest and taken in by the Roger Pirates.[13]

Levely Arc[]

Shamrock with the Five Elders

Shamrock speaks with the Five Elders in Mary Geoise.

During the Levely, Shamrock arrived in Mary Geoise under disguise for a meeting with the Five Elders. After arriving at Pangaea Castle's Room of Authority, Shamrock expressed his appreciation for the Elders allowing the meeting to take place. When they questioned why he would travel all the way there during such a large political event, Shamrock informed them that he needed to discuss a "certain pirate".[1]

Final Saga[]

Elbaph Arc[]

Shamrock & Gunko Summoned

Shamrock and Gunko arrive in Elbaph.

During the banquet to celebrate the Straw Hat Pirates on Elbaph, Shamrock and Gunko touched down in Aurust Castle by means of a Magic Circle.[8] When the pair asked a couple of giant guards about Loki's whereabouts, the giants did not take them seriously, so Gunko tortured one for the information.[14] Gunko and Shamrock traveled down to the Underworld and met with Loki. They offered him a position among the Knights of God; however, he rejected their offer. Annoyed by Loki's personality, Gunko attacked one of his pets, and Shamrock suggested using it as a bargaining chip. In the end, however, Loki refused once more.[6] Despite receiving a severe beatdown from Gunko, Loki refused to change his answer, to Shamrock's great annoyance. After Loki was knocked unconscious, Shamrock decided he was no longer worth their time, and ordered Gunko to contact Mary Geoise with the intent to bring Elbaph under the control of the World Government.[2]

However, before the pair could leave, Loki managed to recompose himself. The giant demanded to know why Shamrock bore such a close resemblance to his past adversary, Shanks. Although Gunko attempted to evade the question, Shamrock relented, and explained that he and Shanks were twin brothers, to Loki's surprise. However, Loki then issued a threat to Shamrock, leading to him becoming outraged at the audacity of the giant to do so. Shamrock then equipped and summoned Cerberus from his sword. While Loki was naturally horrified by the strange sword-hybrid animal, Shamrock ordered it to attack the giant prince while he and Gunko made their escape aboard a bird-like creature composed of arrows. Loki was left to be severely wounded by Cerberus while Shamrock and Gunko planned to take Elbaph's children hostage, with the intent of using them as leverage against their parents. However, this would require more than just the pair, leading to Shamrock ordering Gunko to contact someone else at Mary Geoise.[3]

Shamrock and Gunko eventually landed back up in Elbaph's Sun World, giving Gunko a chance to create a Magic Circle to summon reinforcements. Rimoshifu Killingham and Shepherd Sommers appeared through the Abyss, which confused Shamrock as he had requested one, not two. Killingham revealed that Shamrock had been recalled to Mary Geoise, as a "dire" situation had taken hold there since the Levely. Before leaving, Shamrock briefed the pair on the mission in Elbaph and suggested making a "game" out of the task.[7]

Trivia[]

  • A shamrock is a type of three-leaved clover associated with good luck and Ireland.
    • Like many other characters that have appeared on Elbaph, his name may reference famous wrestlers, in this case the Shamrock Brothers, Ken and Frank Shamrock.
  • The Shonen Jump magazine version of Chapter 1137 did not include the "Saint" (, Sei?) honorific used for other World Nobles' names, and introduced Shamrock by his full name. The honorific was added to the chapter in Volume 112, and Shamrock was introduced as "Saint Shamrock of the Figarland Family", aligning with how the other Knights of God have been introduced in the Elbaph Arc.
  • When Shamrock made his debut during the Levely Arc (Episode 887), he was implied to be Shanks, having the same voice actors in the anime. Notably, though, Shanks himself did appear earlier in the episode, with the voice acting credits only referring to Shanks, presumably to prevent Shamrock's identity from being revealed in that episode. In Road To Laugh Tale Vol. 2, it implies Shanks was Shamrock during the meeting with the Five Elders that occurred in Chapter 907, and further questions why he was allowed an audience with them.
  • Shamrock's voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda is also the voice of Gordon in One Piece Film: Red. Coincidentally, Gordon acted as a foster parent to Uta, the adoptive daughter of Shanks and thus adoptive niece of Shamrock.
