I created a new {{Tabs}} template and I'm going to replace the existing tabs with this new version. While looking through pages, I noticed a few issues/other changes that I'd like to discuss:

  • Tabbed pages currently use a single template that usually have a "mode" parameter so that can be used both for the "top" and the "bottom" of the page.
    • It's better to split it up in two template, one for the "top" and the other for the "bottom": you may think that using one template is better because it's one template less, but if you think about it you are actually doubling the size of data to be loaded since you are making a template double in size which you are using two times. The code will also be easier that way too.
    • If we separate these templates, I would put them all in Category:Specific Tab Templates. To be honest I'm not sure if we need to have both that category and Category:Tab Templates, what's the difference?
    • Currently character tabs templates are placed in Category:Character Infoboxes but that doesn't make much sense since they aren't infoboxes. They include an infobox, but they also have all the template at the top and at the bottom of the page. I would delete that category and simply use Specific Tab Templates.
    • Tip: if you put the section in the template instead of leaving the section on the page, if you edit that section you will instantly edit the template. This is useful for the "bottom" template with the navigation.
  • Category:Color Schemes was an old category for the color schemes templates. Some of those template are still used now because they were needed for the tab template. Since the new tab template can use the CSS color schemes, the old "template" color schemes can be eliminated after the conversion. For some reasons, the category is now used for images. We can either remove the category entirely or rename the category to "Color Schemes Images" and repurprose it as a category for images. Not sure what the "color scheme" is in that case, though, since those images are simply the manga colored images. There isn't a "scheme" anymore.
  • Remember that all tab template should use the "design" template classification.

I updated Nami with all the changes I suggested here and created {{Nami Tabs Top}} and {{Nami Tabs Bottom}} as a live example (if you copy them, be careful to no add extra new lines that might result in empty lines in the article). {{leviathan_89 | 21:20, 21 November, 2020 (UTC)}}

  • Sounds good. We actually had a few pages where the template include size was exceeded due to the doubled size of data.
    • It might be more straightforward to call the templates "Tabs" and "Navigation" since the bottom template has no tabs.
    • I also suggest renaming the original "___ Infobox" templates for the "___ Tabs" templates so the history doesn't get lost.
  • Category:Color Schemes can be renamed to Category:Color Scheme Images and go under Category:Appearance Images. The images are used to illustrate color schemes from the manga or anime in cases where the character has multiple anime color schemes.

  • I used "tabs top/bottom" because aren't the tabs the whole subpages rather than just the tabs template at the top? Technically the infobox shouldn't be part of the tabs either if you consider them only the tabs template. But this is semantics, it doesn't change much for me.
  • I wanted to do that, but making new templates was less disruptive. You can merge the history with Special:MergeHistory, I just did it with "Nami Infobox" and "Nami Tabs Top", but be careful to do it after you replaced the old template since it will become a redirect.
  • As you want, I'm not entirely convinced that the word "schemes" fits there, but it's ok. Maybe "Manga Colors (or Colored?) Images"? {{leviathan_89 | 09:32, 22 November, 2020 (UTC)}}
  • I guess that also makes sense, though I think of "tabs" as the buttons, like the Template:Tabs and Template:Parent Tab Template descriptions. So it might be more unambiguous with the way I suggested, but it's fine either way.
  • Yeah, that works.
  • We talk about a character's "manga color scheme" in the sense of "the way the character is colored in the manga" on articles and filenames.

Alright, I'm experimenting a bit again on how to deal with 2nd level subpages. After that I'll start converting the other tabs. {{leviathan_89 | 12:03, 22 November, 2020 (UTC)}}
