Discussion

Some links to a problem being discussed concerning all the wikia sites, including this one.

Basically, the main wikia staff are gonna force a new look on all sites affiliated with them. Changes include:

  • Complete overhaul of the article orientation, From right like with Wikipedia to left like with some blog sites.
  • Huge empty space on the right, I'm thinking is for ads.
  • Allowing comments on articles like blog sites.
  • Small article size.

16:35, September 30, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I know about it. I was wondering when this would be brought up here. The new look is actually quite nice, and changing the settings/colors is actually really easy. The problem is the fixed width. I absolutely loath it, and brought it up a couple of times. But I feel like they're completely ignoring the users on that stance. I don't understand why the content space has to be so tiny, it makes zero sense. Um... but besides that huge issue, it's quite good. YazzyDream 16:29, September 30, 2010 (UTC)
Its nice looking indeed but conflicts with alot of what most wikias aim for. I'm particularly peeved on the article size also as well as the article orientation.Mugiwara Franky
Yea, that's what I mean, the fixed width is the content space. It's terrible. The articles are completely smooshed to one side. >:( I sent in another feedback saying it again. YazzyDream 16:42, September 30, 2010 (UTC)
I hate it... The wikias aren't all the same and there are traits and aims across them that each has. Now weve all suddenly got to comply with the wikia staff wants and desires, theres no consideration for how things have previously been working up until now. One-Winged Hawk 16:07, October 1, 2010 (UTC)
I know, most of what they're want is aimed more towards traveling across different wikias, ad space, and looking like a blog site like facebook rather than the specific needs and aims of each wikia. Those reasons maybe reasonable I guess to a point, except they're sacrificing the most basic need that all wikias require, suitable articles that provide information.
It's a really a big debate indeed. In fact, it's caused some users to make this little group. This also brings to something really important. If for some unjustified chance the wikia staff don't heed the hundreds of complaints, this really means bad news for this site. We may have to be forced once again to move.Mugiwara Franky 16:46, October 1, 2010 (UTC)
All I can say is keep an eye on the topic. If its coming into too much debate, then we might have to back up all the essential pages as a precaution. This will become a bit of a bind for everyone as we've been heavily relied upon for a while now. :-/ One-Winged Hawk 07:38, October 5, 2010 (UTC)
There are some alternatives being listed on the pages, I'll start looking at them and see what their like. For now... Things are relatively okay. We'll have to all discuss moving if it comes to that at a later date. The advertisments have been my main peep for a while now, ion particular, when they came along the wikia found its page layouts heavily effected. Now, 1 or 2 on the front page - okay, one at the top or bottom header - also okay... The one random ad that is placed in the article - just screws around with the page! One-Winged Hawk 07:44, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

That is completely ugly. "If it's not broken don't fix it." People are always doing this stupid crap when the old designs are perfect. SeaTerror 04:52, October 6, 2010 (UTC)

Really don't know what to say but it really feels like a completely different and uncomfortable site that makes me feel that I have to relearn things again.Mugiwara Franky 11:28, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

How can we even move to a different host? Is there even something like Wikia in existence? SeaTerror 16:59, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, there are actually few other sites like wikia.Mugiwara Franky 05:49, October 8, 2010 (UTC)

Then the closest to my opinion would be the third. But I think that we should copy everything then move to the new site and keep this wikia open for others. SeaTerror 06:07, October 8, 2010 (UTC) SeaTerror 06:05, October 8, 2010 (UTC)

Been looking at Wikii and its features. Looks promising.Mugiwara Franky 18:07, October 9, 2010 (UTC)

Poll

Don't know if this is early but I believe it is necessary.Mugiwara Franky 11:33, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Posible Solution

Hi,One Piece lovers,I am Raging Blast.I am here not because of One Piece, but because of the new look,I should inform you that Dragon Ball Wiki and Dragon Ball Fanon Wiki are planing to unite all anime wiki's to please the creators to keep the old look for anime wikia's.Admin of this site, please response, this could be a chance. {{SUBST:User:Raging Blast/siggy22}} 16:56, October 9, 2010 (UTC)

Their at it again, all the wikias look terrible right now because of it! It seems like they don't care if they cause hassle for all the people using their system. One-Winged Hawk 10:15, October 13, 2010 (UTC)
Considering that it seems like they really don't care, would it be okay to start making a copy of the site as per the poll. So far Wikkii has been proposed and its features look promising.
On a personal note, considering what Wikkii is offering, I'm thinking of continue editing there instead once the copy up. The site here will still be around but I unfortunately will not be for reasons created by the wikia. So it might also be a good idea to appoint an admin before I go.Mugiwara Franky 11:11, October 13, 2010 (UTC)
P.s. Apparently I myself can't appoint a user to admin for safety keeping. I'm only an admin not a bereucrat.Mugiwara Franky 11:20, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

I tried the new look today and I don't like it, most of all the narrow space for article text, and also "Added by <username>" captions under images. So, as the new style becomes non-optional soon, I think it's a good idea to move to a new host.Ruxax 14:15, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

I've just requested Wikkii if we can export a copy of our articles to their site.Mugiwara Franky 01:30, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

A way to deal with the double wiki issue

An admin over at Narutopedia has come up with [way around] the double wiki issue that occurs if a wiki were to move from wikia.Bastian964 13:14, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

A serious problem was raised in that ^ discussion. Now, when you type "one piece" in Google, link to onepiece.wikia.com is the 4th. But how will people know about the new wiki (at another host)? Obviously, wikia staff will prevent massive linking to new site. Ruxax 14:19, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

Permission granted to move to Wikkii

Asked permission from Wikkii and I got a good reply. All that is needed now is to create the space for which to move the copy of this site. Before I do so, there is a request on what domain name the site should be called. Ex. http://onepiece.wikkii.net. Should it remain as is something more detailed like One Piece Encyclopedia. Please note that this will be our address name.Mugiwara Franky 09:12, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

P.S. Also waiting for the Database dump to be updated at Special:Statistics. The Data dump is the entire site's pages and their history in a simple file. It normally updates at certain intervals. Currently it contains the pages as they were at 10:32, September 15, 2010. If I just get a data dump that isn't as close to now, we're gonna have a lot to modify when we make the copy.Mugiwara Franky 14:07, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

The Big Move

Ya'll will notify us "regular" editors of this move, in terms of when and where to right? Also, from what I understand, we will be moving the whole One Piece wiki to a new hosting site. Does this mean it will look no different then how it normally did (I think I'm looking at the new appearance at the time of this posting and I got to say it's offending to the eyes and difficult to navigate); likewise the move will be like moving an old article to a new one, only on a much larger scale; so we won't have to rebuild the whole site from the ground up, correct? Does that include all the user accounts being moved as well, or will we all have to make new accounts? I hope I don't sound completely ignorant of the situation, I'd just like to stay as clearly informed as possible. Thanks in advance for any helpful info you might provide! --Kingluffy1 20:31, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

They should do...
...And Yuck! I was editing a wikia when the switch to the new layout happened, for a split second I thought I broke the page I was on. Ewww. I don't like this at all, its gone from "nice and simple" to "ugly and complex". WHERE is "recent changes now??? One-Winged Hawk 23:07, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

You can change it via perfences back to the old method thankfully. Panic over, but the wikia staff are gonna force the new look on visitors, even if editors are allowed to switch back. I'm just glad we CAN switch back, the old layout is much easier to work with and friendlier. One-Winged Hawk 23:13, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

That's a relief. Thanks for the tip. --Kingluffy1 23:19, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

The option to switch back to the old look is only temporarily. By November 3, whether you like it or not, everybody will be forced to use the new look.
As for the articles, I'm waiting for the database dump to be updated to the latest as possible. If we move before then, we will have a hard time updating articles that were modified only to a month ago.Mugiwara Franky 02:54, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

Oy vey. Thanks for the update at least. --Kingluffy1 03:03, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

My god! I hate the new look. Geez, how are you supposed to find and watch "My home" now when you log in? I couldn't find it anywhere!80.217.72.192 06:16, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

"My Home" is now in the form of "Wiki Activity".Chopperdude 06:00, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Really don't what to say about the My Home thing since I don't use it myself usually. However considering that there are people that care about it, Wikia taking it away is really a bad move.
Other than that, I also have to mention that the database dump only applies to articles. For userpages and the like, they will have to be built again from the ground up. Hopefully however once the update arrives and a copy is moved, modifying userpages will be the only hard part for users wanting to move.Mugiwara Franky 08:56, October 21, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for letting us know. Will we have a new web address/url or something after the datadump? If so, let us know as soon as you can. Thanks again for all your help! --Kingluffy1 02:29, November 4, 2010 (UTC)
This site's address itself is remain the same. However, a copy of the info will be on another site with a different address. I just have to properly send it there. On a note though, I wish my computer was faster so I can at least set the basics on the other site faster.Mugiwara Franky 03:35, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

They must have learned when everybody complained about it on Wikipedia and they finally allowed people to switch back to the old format. I honestly would not have known you could switch back if I hadn't seen this discussion. I don't get why other websites don't do that. SeaTerror 15:54, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

The switch option is only temporary. After some time only new skin will be available. Ruxax 23:52, October 22, 2010 (UTC)

Waiting for Databasedump update

The database dump update is taking longer due to all the orders Wikia's been receiving for database dumps from several wikias. We aren't the only ones who don't like the new look, alot of people have been requesting database dumps so they can move with ease. So bear for awhile. So even if Nov. 3 comes and a copy of the site hasn't been made yet, the article content can still be copied and moved.Mugiwara Franky 17:59, October 28, 2010 (UTC)

Never mind, it's been updated. Just wait for a few more hours or so.Mugiwara Franky 11:16, October 29, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, this is taking longer than it should. I don't understand it myself.Mugiwara Franky 00:18, October 30, 2010 (UTC)
Really sorry that it is taking so long, my computer is not fast enough to properly transport 1.0 GB of info from this site to the other.Mugiwara Franky 03:37, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

Really sorry

Really sorry but my computer is really slow. If anyone has a computer that can process 1.0 GB that would be most helpful. The data can be downloaded here and it can be imported here.Mugiwara Franky 04:41, November 5, 2010 (UTC)

Only admins can import the database dump though, so, even if I did download it; I just wouldn't be able to import it.... MasterDeva 11:07, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
I'll give admin status to those who wish to help. Just sign up at the site and say your wish to import it. If and when it's finished, those who don't want the admin status can ask for their status to be changed to a normal editor. Although it would help the state of things if there was another admin around. That's another matter though. What matters now is getting the info there. I've been trying for practically 2 and a half days now and the database dump is slowly getting outdated what with one piece green and all. Mugiwara Franky 11:36, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
I've registered an account and I'm currently downloading the database dump, this will take a few minutes. Could you request another dumb that's more up to date after we import the old one? That would be really helpful. MasterDeva 12:21, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
I am good to go and ready to upload the database dump as soon as you give me administrator status! MasterDeva 12:31, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
Okay, admin status check, I'll start in a few minutes after rebooting. MasterDeva 12:39, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
Status given. As for an update on the database dump, I've kinda requested it already. However, it may take awhile. At least it's of Nov. 1 as that gives us a few days to catch up.Mugiwara Franky 12:40, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
Someone at the top of the main site that's supporting the site we're going is going to help us out by giving us an advance hosting. Basically, we're gonna have more control and such.Mugiwara Franky 16:10, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
I can't believe it, I uploaded the entire file twice and I got a "insertion failed session data loss" something error! This is weird because I used my line only to upload the file and nothing else, it took me 8 hours to upload the whole thing (4 hours each time) and I can't find what's causing the error! Sorry Mugiwara Franky... MasterDeva 21:21, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
I fixed the error, I had to do a little tweaking and change some values but the problem is solved now. Expect the dump to have been uploaded in the next 4 or so hours! MasterDeva 22:23, November 5, 2010 (UTC)
The advance hosting address given by the staff member at Wikki is here. In this one, we have more options to control the site.Mugiwara Franky 07:32, November 7, 2010 (UTC)
Most of the data from this site is successfully uploaded there.Mugiwara Franky 07:34, November 7, 2010 (UTC)

I've just gone to the wikkii mirror and saw the new site still have a lot of issues, mainly about pictures missing but also about the internal search engine not working... As for the pictures missing, it can be solved with some perl scripts as depicted on the http://absurdopedia.net/wiki/%D0%A3%D1%87%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA:Edward_Chernenko/MediaWikiDumper article. It's been already tested for WoWWiki, the previous biggest wiki on Wikia before its move, but it seems to require that nobody edits the wiki during export. We can also solve the skin issue by forcing the use of the MonoBook skin. It should remain as it's especially kept for the Uncyclopedia wiki. I don't know if an OP wiki admin can actually do this, but it would be for the best as it wouldn't scatter the OP community between 2 sites.--Xinyingho 21:06, November 14, 2010 (UTC)

Edit: When I wrote about solving the skin issue, I meant by staying here as a Wikia hosted site and changing the default skin (I don't know if my previous message was clear about that).--Xinyingho 00:16, November 15, 2010 (UTC)

Changing the default skin on Wikia is not an option, with the exception of Uncyclopedia all wiki on Wikia are required to use Oasis as their default skin, and to not make any change to it via css/js that makes any actual change to it's layout (beyond superfluous style changes). ~Dantman-local(talk) Nov 15, 2010 @ 00:24 (UTC) 00:24, November 15, 2010 (UTC)

Pics are slowly being transferred to the other site. Search engine and other bugs may take sometime to fix but will be fixed eventually. As for the forced look, Dantman is right. We cannot change the default skin here. Everybody will use Oasis as a default regardless if they like it or not.Mugiwara Franky 06:18, November 15, 2010 (UTC)

I just tried logging in and it said my username didn't exist. This may sound dumb, but are we all going to have to make new accounts for wikki or is all the user account information going to be transfered but it just hasn't been done yet? I'm only asking because I don't want there to be two conflicting accounts of the same name or something like that.DancePowderer 06:09, November 16, 2010 (UTC)

The user account information seems to be there, but I believe you have to create the account. Anyway spread the word around though, it's a bit hard for at 3-4 editors alone transferring the data notably the images. It also might be a good idea to stop edits here for awhile so we don't miss out anything.Mugiwara Franky 09:31, November 16, 2010 (UTC)
I just created my new user page. There wasn't anything on it, but that's not my concern at the moment. Anyway, since I'm one of the few editors on the new site now, if there's anything I can do to help, let me know. I'm not too good with all this data-dump tech stuff, but I'll do what I can.DancePowderer 19:41, November 19, 2010 (UTC)
You can upload any missing images or add any missing info for starters I guess.Mugiwara Franky 03:07, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
I know this isn't the best question to ask right now, but how would I do that? Do you mean transfer the images from here to the new site?DancePowderer 05:14, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
For the images, yes. You can either see which image is missing by checking pages or by going through the image categories which lists most of the images. From there, simply upload them to their designation in the other site.Mugiwara Franky 07:01, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
P.S. The appropriate site is here at onepiece.wikkii.net. It's the new one given by the host site as discussed above. This is probably why your password didn't work and why you didn't have any info at your userpage DancePowderer.Mugiwara Franky 07:01, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
There's a problem with my log-in. I see my user page is up but it says that there is no user by the name DancePowderer. Would you by any chance know what it is or how it can be fixed?DancePowderer 07:09, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
I think it might have to do with the conflicting accounts thing I mentioned earlier, because I got on to what was supposed to by my temporary user page through a link from the email confirmation.DancePowderer 07:14, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
Really sorry for the triple post (and for not spacing my comments, my computer's been acting weird), but I think there might be two different versions. The one I couldn't log on to had all the pics and everything. The one I could log on to still doesn't have any pics.DancePowderer 07:20, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
It kinda was explained above but I'll explain more through-oh. I started the other site at onepiece.wikkii."com". The host at wikkii gave us a more advanced site at onepiece.wikkii."net" at which we have more control. The one at ."com" doesn't have pics or your userpage. The one at ."net" has the pics and your userpage. Login to the ."net" one at [6]. Hope this clears up the confusion.Mugiwara Franky 07:36, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
It does, thank you. Will the stuff on the "net" site be transfered to the "com" site or vice-versa?DancePowderer 07:49, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
Never mind. I just made an account on the "net." It's all good. Thanks for the help, MF.DancePowderer 07:55, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
Just transfer to the net site as we have more control there as explained here. The .com site won't have stuff considering the limitations and the amount of data that's already been transferred to the .net site.Mugiwara Franky 07:56, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
This is a dumb question, but does transitioning to this site more or less get rid of the edit count that this site has?DancePowderer 08:05, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
Umm, do you mean the number of revisions here? If so, nope it doesn't. The history here remains as is unless we ask for something like deleting this whole site from the main wikia. That however won't go unless we have a full community consensus or something here, and I believe that regardless of the Oasis skin, there are gonna be at least some number of people who wouldn't want a full wiki deletion. If you mean something else though, please specify.Mugiwara Franky 19:10, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
No, what I meant was the counter on the user pages that keeps track of the number of edits each user has made. I know it's not the most mandatory thing, but it's just fun to keep count.DancePowderer 22:45, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
Nope it doesn't. The record of your edit counts here stays here. A record of whatever edits you did prior to the full import to the other site and whatever else you did after in the other site, is kept in the other site I believe.Mugiwara Franky 16:37, November 21, 2010 (UTC)
And one last question, will there be blogs? I know there aren't any now, but will they be forthcoming or will they stay here?DancePowderer 04:04, November 22, 2010 (UTC)
Currently, it seems the blog feature is only exclusive in this site here. In fact, I don't know of any other wiki site other than wikia to have a blog system. There are forum systems but no blog systems.Mugiwara Franky 05:58, November 22, 2010 (UTC)
