- Not to be confused with Gaburu.
Gaburi is an animated Orb,[2] brought to life by the Great Tree for the purpose of serving as the guardian of her candidates for her ordeals.[3] By observing her candidates, Gaburi was intended to be transformed into a present customized to the natures of the Great Tree's candidates based on his memories of them;[4] if the candidates were deemed pure of heart, Gaburi was intended to become a reward, but if the candidates were deemed evil, he would become a means of destroying the former.[5][3]
Speculated to have been born about a thousand years ago, only to go dormant when the Great Tree sank into the sea, Gaburi awoke in the present day with no memories when Monkey D. Luffy reactivated the Great Tree.[6] He was then assigned as the guardian of the Straw Hat Pirates as they took part in the Great Tree's ordeals, during which he formed a profound bond with the crew. When he had to be transformed into the crew's present however, the Great Tree turned him into the Doom Guardian to kill the Straw Hat Pirates. Though the crew got the original piece of Gaburi back, he was deduced to his Orb form when defending them from the Doom Guardian. He was later restored in a new form, but would disappear if he remained separate from the Doom Guardian. As such, Gaburi spent the following period building up his strength with the aid of the Straw Hats before taking back the Doom Guardian. With Luffy's permission, Gaburi later used the true present from the Great Tree to become human and setting out on his own quest to become Pirate King.
Gaburi serves as the main ally in One Piece Unlimited Cruise 1: The Treasure Beneath the Waves and One Piece Unlimited Cruise 2: Awakening of a Hero.
Appearance[]
In his original Orb form, Gaburi is a round and shiny blue jewel covered in moving white specks.
In One Piece Unlimited Cruise 1: The Treasure Beneath the Waves, Gaburi appears as a small demon with a very large head that makes him look like a chibi.[3] He has mostly orange skin, with the exception of yellow skin on top of his head and around his forehead, round eyes with large pupils, large and swirly blue eyebrows, yellow lips, a fuzzy tail similar to a raccoon tail with layers of orange, yellow and purple fur along it, and a pair of turfs of blue hair hanging from the sides of his head. He also has jagged teeth and fangs that point upwards from his jaw. For attire, Gaburi wears a large red hat with a wide rim around it, a small purple demon face with red lips and yellow eyebrows on the front, a pair of large and curved horns with white and yellow stripes that protrude from the sides of said demon face, a yellow zig-zag pattern along the upper half, a purple and yellow-rimmed flower-like decoration on top of it, a yellow and purple neck shade, and a strap with a yellow buckle. He also wears a pair of knee-long pants that look oversized with a large belt, white-rimmed purple disks attached to the belt, and yellow, blue, and orange spots on them. He also has a golden-rimmed purple wristband on his right wrist, a golden-rimmed green wristband on his left wrist, and golden ankle bracelets. Lastly, he carries a katana on his back. This katana has a green scabbard with yellow zigzag lines along it, a golden end tip, a square and golden handguard, a green grip, and a golden kashira. He also has a sparkling purple halo above his head.
In One Piece Unlimited Cruise 2: Awakening of a Hero, Gaburi returns in an angelic form, but otherwise with the same body proportions.[7] Here, he has cream-colored skin, with the exception of orange skin on top of his head and around his forehead, thin eyebrows, orange lips, a smooth tail with layers of orange, blue and cream fur along it, and a pair of turfs of blue hair hanging from the back of his head. He also has round teeth. For attire, Gaburi wears a blue helmet that is open on the front, yet covers his neck area. Said hat also has a light blue rim and elaborate line art around it, a pair of white angelic wings protruding from the front with a crest of a smiling golden head with a halo where said wings join up, a dark blue layer around its neck cover, a pair of golden cloth strips hanging from the back, and a golden disk on top of it with a blue bead embedded in it. In addition, Gaburi wears oversized blue pants with shoulder straps and golden buttons, silver and golden wristbands, and golden ankle bracelets. Lastly, he carries a katana on his back. This katana has a blue shoulder strap, a pink scabbard with a golden and blunt tip, a round and golden handguard, a pink guard and a golden kashira. He also has a golden halo above his head with a pink eighth note floating in its center.
After becoming human, Gaburi would appear as a slightly adolescent boy with bright skin and blonde hair. For attire, he would wear a blue cap with a puff ball on top of it, a blue t-shirt, and thin golden wristbands.

Personality[]

Gaburi celebrating merrily with Luffy.
Gaburi is a genuine, innocent, and child-like creature. Born with a coherent mind, but no knowledge of the world and its people, or his role in the Great Tree's ordeals, he started out as docile and non-hostile when he awoke in the present day. True to his desires like a child, he likewise gets very happy when receiving even simple praises, meeting people he is fond of, or just observing others' comical antics. Shortly after being awoken, Gaburi also had a habit of chomping on things and eating inanimate things he came across, although he grew out of that as he began more aware. He also tends to fly upside down when happy or excited.[3][7]
Due to his innocence and lack of knowledge prior to his awakening in the present day, Gaburi was very oblivious to many aspects of life, leaving him very impressionable and, at times, naïve. Even feelings like happiness was a completely new experience to him. Even so, he would consistently express a youthful optimism, an open mind, and an enthusiastic attitude about seeing new things, all while taking everything he learned to heart. Throughout it all, he also displayed care about doing things that were right.[3][7]
While much of that which he encountered on his journey with the Straw Hat Pirates perplexed him, none did more so than the complicated nature of humans, including they way they behaved, their individual customs when dealing with strife, their relationships with each other, and above all, their morality when contrasted to each other in the different situations, such as the Straw Hat Pirates and their unique sense of heroism despite technically being pirates. Gaburi in particular gained a fear of the "darkness" in human nature after witnessing the amorality of the Great Tree's recreation of Blackbeard, although he was calmed by reassurance from his friends that there were good people out in the world too and that his crewmates would protect him.[3][7] He also gained an interest in the concept of human desires, or dreams, after hearing how far the Straw Hat Pirates would go for theirs. At first, Gaburi believed them to be burdens, but he eventually gained an interest in having his own after hearing about how dreams gave people the drive to live their lives. Initially, Gaburi had doubts about what kind of dream he could fulfil, but was soon taught to aim for what he wanted to do and not what he could do. Eventually, that desire led him to form a dream derived from Luffy's: to become a pirate and compete with Luffy to see who becomes Pirate King first.[7]
At the end of his journey, Gaburi had come to a much greater of understanding of humanity. Most of all, he had come to the conclusion that "good" and "evil" could not be categorized by a single individual, and that humanity, for all their flaws, still had dreams to pursue and that they continue to try even when they veer off course, which meant that neither he or the Great Tree had the right to determine their fates. As such, he would bravely stand in the defense of humanity, even in the face of the Great Tree's wrath.[7]
Upon learning of the concept of friendship and what it meant to work together, Gaburi gained a true fascination with such concepts and wanted to share his comradery with the Straw Hat Pirates, although Luffy was quick to tell him that by the time he gained an aspiration for that, he was already one of the Straw Hat Pirates, much to his joy. From there on, Gaburi sought to become even better friends with the Straw Hat Pirates; even a simultaneous brain freeze between his crewmates came as a sign of friendship to Gaburi. The sense of comradery with the crew would move Gaburi to tears at times as well. Along with those feelings came also a sense of insecurity for Gaburi though; while he longed to become a true friend and crewmate, he did not really know anything about his crewmates, which made him wonder what a friend did for another. Thanks to Nami and the others though, he was taught to do what came natural to him when a friend was in need of him.[3] Eventually, Gaburi would develop to become such a loyal friend that he would come to their aid at a moment's notice (no matter how small the threat would be) and even give up his own life for the sake of those he cared about. However, that led him down a path where he would completely disregard his own life no matter what in order to keep his friends safe until the Straw Hat Pirates taught him to value his own right to live and rely more on his friends in dangerous situations while following his own path instead of needlessly disregarding himself and his own happiness.[7]
Due to being among such powerful and skilled people as the Straw Hat Pirates, Gaburi would at times display little confidence in his own skills and capabilities, having deemed them insignificant to those exhibited by the crew. That concern became even more apparent at the prospect of having to remerge with the Doom Guardian, as Gaburi feared that he lacked the strength to take back control from that entity. Over the course of his journey with the Straw Hat Pirates from there though, Gaburi learned to believe in his own strength and potential, allowing him to eventually face his challenges with bravery and confidence.[7]
Initially, Gaburi could only say his name. After the Straw Hat Pirates cleared the obligatory ordeals on Forest Island though, he suddenly became able to speak human language. Due to fondness for Luffy in particular, he immediately picked up his manner of speaking.[3]
Like many other characters, Gaburi has a distinct laughter, which is "Shishishishi", one of many mannerisms of which he picked up from Luffy.[3]
Relationships[]
Straw Hat Pirates[]

Gaburi ready to fight alongside the Straw Hat Pirates.
After he got to know them, Gaburi gained a good relationship with the Straw Hat Pirates, although he was awfully found of Monkey D. Luffy by default, who became somewhat of a father figure to him.[7] He would even go as far as imitate Luffy's manner of speech and behavior at various points.
Along his journey with the crew, Gaburi learned many things from them and was greatly amused by the antics they displayed, especially by the way they would bicker. However, he would be concerned by the strife there occasionally arose among them, namely due to how often Zoro and Sanji argued with each other all the time. However, that changed when he saw the pair work together as one to protect him. This brief display of teamwork led Gaburi to gain a fascination for what it meant to work together and have friends, which made him aspire to get friends himself and be a part of a team. However, Luffy was quick to tell him that by that point, he had already gained that by becoming a member of the crew, much to his joy. Even something as simple as a simultaneous brain freeze between him, Luffy, and Chopper from then on convinced Gaburi that he was a part of the crew. As Gaburi began longing to become the best possible crewmate to the Straw Hats though, Nami and the rest would teach him what friends did for each other when they needed them.[3]
Originally, Gaburi thought the Straw Hat Pirates were good people, until he learned that they were pirates and thus outlaws. This made Gaburi question his own grasp of humans' moral compass. Following his encounter with the Great Tree's imitation of Ace though, Gaburi learned from Luffy to see the Straw Hat Pirates as either good or bad people, but as people who "make you feel good".[3]
In the end, Gaburi's attachment to the Straw Hat Pirates proved so great that it prompted him to sacrifice his body and all his power to protect them from a rampaging Doom Guardian. By committing that act, Gaburi truly considered himself one of the Straw Hat Pirates.[3] However, his desire to preserve the well-being of the crew eventually eclipsed his own happiness so much that he would insist that the Straw Hat Pirates threw him away and forgot about him so he could eventually disappear alone in order to protect the crew from any threat from the Doom Guardian. Thanks to the crew though, Gaburi came to see his life as something not to be recklessly wasted. When faced with the subsequent challenge of remerging with the Doom Guardian, Gaburi found growing strength in the Straw Hat Pirates' reassurance in his skills and confidence in him. Thanks to them, he was ultimately able to overcome his fear of the Doom Guardian and confront it with both bravery and confidence.[7]
In the end, he confronts Luffy, saying that his dream is to become the Pirate King and compete with Luffy to see who attains that title first, which meant that they then had to part ways, prompting him and Luffy to seal this promise with a fist bump. While Gaburi was very sad to leave the crew for the sake of his ambition and almost called for them as they walked away, he chose in the last moment to honor Luffy and their promise by turning away from his friends with a smile on his face.[7]
Great Tree[]
Gaburi was created by the Great Tree for the sole purpose of acting as a guardian for the Straw Hat Pirates during their journey across her islands and then be transformed into a suitable present for them based on his observations of them. Gaburi, however, was completely unaware of his role in the Great Tree's plans. As such, when the time came for his transformation to be commenced, Gaburi approached the Great Tree without fear, convinced that he was going to get rewarded for his contributions. However, they arrived at an impasse of opinions when Gaburi refused to acknowledge the Straw Hat Pirates as bad guys despite the Great Tree's convictions to the contrary. Gaburi's brief fear of Marshall D. Teach soon after influenced the Great Tree to turn him into the Doom Guardian to defend herself from the Straw Hat Pirates, which would endow Gaburi with a near-traumatic fear of the Great Tree.[3][7]

Gaburi confronts the Great Tree inside her core.
While preparing to reclaim the Doom Guardian from the Great Tree, Gaburi was afraid of having to confront the latter once again. As a part of his preparation for that, he thus sought to become stronger. However, that alone was not enough to quell his fears of her, despite vouches of confidence from the crew. It was only after Usopp had imparted some wisdom to him that Gaburi found the courage needed to stand up to her, which meant protecting what mattered to him with his friends' support. As such, when the time came for Gaburi's confrontation with the Great Tree, he had found the conviction to not only stand up to her with confidence and bravery, but also staying true to what he believed in humanity despite the Great Tree's belief in the opposite. Eventually, the Great Tree reacted with hostility towards Gaburi for his defiance, but the two of them soon came to understanding each other and found peace with one another.[7]
Abilities and Powers[]

Gaburi expanding his mouth in order to consume and convert a large seed from the Great Tree.
Gaburi has the ability to expand his portions,[8] enabling him to ingest objects much bigger than himself. By ingesting different kinds of materials, he can change them into new forms. This allows him for example to spit out energy balls that trigger certain events, such as transforming the environment to open up new paths, or take the seeds from the Great Tree and transform them into treasures. When ingesting and converting seeds from the Great Tree's ordeal trees in particular, Gaburi can essentially taste the morality of the person that the seed took the form of; the more amoral such a person is, the more disgusting and bitter their seed tastes to Gaburi.[9][10] He also has the ability to fly.
Gaburi possesses innate knowledge of the number of ordeals present on each of the Great Tree's islands, although he has no idea of how he knows it. He also has a form of heightened awareness that allows him to sense the Great Tree's activity behind a barrier on Central Island.[3]
After becoming the "true" present for the Straw Hat Pirates, Gaburi gained the ability to grant one wish for anything, which he ended up using on himself to become human.[7]
Weapons[]
Although he was never seen using it, Gaburi wields a katana, attached to his back with a rope. It is unknown if he can wield it and how proficient he is with it.
History[]
Past[]
According to ancient Stone Monuments, Gaburi, despite his conviction to the contrary, was present at least a thousand years ago.[2][6] Created from an Orb by the Great Tree,[2] Gaburi was born for the purpose of serving as a guardian of sorts for the candidates for her ordeals, all as a part of her purpose to select a leader for a now-lost civilization.[3][11] The reason for Gaburi's existence as a creature, as theorized by the Straw Hat Pirates, was a necessity for the Great Tree to fulfill her objective, as it needed Gaburi to experience things and form his own opinions about her candidates.[2][6] When the time was right, Gaburi was then intended to return to the Great Tree, where she would turn him into a present for her candidates, with the nature of that present being based according to an analysis of Gaburi's memories and opinions on the candidates' character profiles.[3][4] If Gaburi would deem the candidates pure of heart, he would become a present worthy of good fortune for them, but if he would deem them evil, he would become a means for the Great Tree of destroying the candidates.[5][7]
Regardless of circumstances, when people came to take back the Orbs, Gaburi had already been born. As it turned out, due to being as true to his desires as a child, he had matured along with the candidates. As such, when the Great Tree was cast out of its homeland, Gaburi would sink into the sea along with the Great Tree when it came to rest in the latter half of Paradise, where he would forget all about his past.[2][6]

The Treasure Beneath the Waves[]
Chapter 1: The Amber in the Tree[]

Gaburi meeting Luffy for the first time.
When the Straw Hat Pirates reactivated the Great Tree, Gaburi, believing himself to have just been born, awoke with no memories of a past in the company of Monkey D. Luffy on Central Island, his first act being to bite onto Luffy's hand when he reached for him. Unaware of the Great Tree's plans for him, Gaburi held onto Luffy as he was flung away with a massive seed from the Central Island by the Great Tree. However, Gaburi got separated from Luffy when the seed skipped across the sea and ultimately grew into Forest Island.[3]
Later, on Forest Island, Gaburi came across Usopp, Chopper, Robin and Brook. After gobbling up Chopper's stick and frightening everyone but Robin, Robin discovered Gaburi's abilities from a stone monument, which they quickly put to use by having Gaburi open a path for them. As the Straw Hats reunited, Gaburi happily rejoined Luffy. The Straw Hats then decided to complete the Great Tree's ordeals to receive its present with Gaburi by their side. Before Gaburi could help them go further though, the crew took him to the Thousand Sunny. There, Luffy gave Gaburi his name, basing it on the only word the latter could say, which the latter seemed to like. While there however, Gaburi would eat the keys for the Thousand Sunny's quarters, thus leaving the crew locked out of their own ship for the time being.[3]
Back on Forest Island, Gaburi used his powers to clear a path into the island for the crew using the Thousand Sunny's Gaon Cannon. Deeper into the island, the group found a strange tree. This tree released a seed that produced an ordeal in the form of Bartholomew Kuma, whom the Straw Hats managed to defeat. Gaburi then took the remains from the ordeal seed and converted it into treasure. Gaburi would then enjoy himself watching the Straw Hats argue with each other after figuring out the nature of the Great Tree's ordeals.[3]

Gaburi revealing that he can talk to the Straw Hat Pirates.
Making their way to the top of Forest Island, the group got Gaburi to open a path through some amber to another ordeal tree. This tree produced an ordeal in the form of Enel and a battalion of automatas. After the Straw Hats defeated these enemies, Gaburi took what remained of the ordeal seed and produced another treasure. As the Straw Hats decided to proceed, Gaburi imitated Luffy and told them that there were no obligatory ordeals left on Forest Island, although it took most of the Straw Hats a moment to realize that Gaburi had talked. Luffy wondered how he could suddenly do that, but Gaburi had no explanation. Usopp then tried to ask Gaburi about the islands' backstory, but Gaburi could not recall anything prior to his awakening. Regardless, he somehow knew for sure that the crew were done with Forest Island. Gaburi then got a proper taste of happiness when the crew praised him for his usefulness, which he enjoyed. He would then imitate Luffy again, which prompted a round of reactions from the crew.[3]
Setting course for the next island, Luffy and Sanji tried taking a look at Gaburi to see how he worked, only for him to accidently nearly chomp on Sanji. That would prompt a round of reactions from the Straw Hat that lead to more arguments, which Gaburi found funny.[3]
Chapter 2: The Cliff Ruins[]
Arriving on Gorge Island, Gaburi saw Zoro and Sanji argue with each other again as they made landfall. Gaburi suggested doing something about it, but Nami told him to ignore them because they always argue, much to Gaburi's confusion about human nature.[3]
Making their way deeper into the island, the Straw Hats eventually encountered a gorge where they got Gaburi to create a bridge across it, although the process was slightly delayed. They would then find a new ordeal tree that spit out two seeds that took the form of Krieg and Kuro. After the Straw Hats defeated them, Gaburi converted their seed remains into treasures, although he was disgusted by how awful they tasted. Gaburi was then advised by Usopp to not be taken in by Nami's persuasive nature. Although he did not understand why, he promised to be careful regardless, prompting Nami to scold Usopp.[3]

Gaburi is protected from Gecko Moria by Zoro and Sanji.
Further into the island, Gaburi would use his powers again when the Straw Hats needed to reach a new ordeal tree on top of an ancient structure. Gaburi's power caused the structure to collapse, which nearly crushed Nami. When the Straw Hat interacted with the tree, its seed produced a copy of Gecko Moria. This facsimile tried to make a grab for Gaburi with his Doppelman. Although Gaburi froze up in fear, he was saved when Zoro and Sanji held the technique back together. The Straw Hats proceeded to battle and defeat the Moria clone, leaving it for Gaburi to take the remains of the seed that created the clone and turn it into a new treasure, although the seed tasted really disgusting to Gaburi. Regardless, Gaburi confirmed to the crew that there were no obligatory ordeals left on the island.[3]
Making it back to the Thousand Sunny, Gaburi and the Straw Hats headed for the next island. On the way there, Gaburi saw Zoro and Sanji argue again. This confused him, as the pair had shown perfect synchronization when they saved him from the Moria ordeal. As an explanation for this, Luffy and Franky told Gaburi that it was because they were crewmates. Intrigued by that concept, Gaburi wanted to make more friends and be a crewmate too. However, Luffy told him that he already was a part of the Straw Hat Pirates. Although surprised, Gaburi was nonetheless happy by this declaration. Usopp then tried to assign Gaburi to the bottom of their chain of command, but Gaburi took it as a sign that Usopp wanted to join the crew, prompting Usopp to tell him that he already was a Straw Hat.[3]
Chapter 3: Unexplored Ice Region[]

Gaburi eating shaved ice with Luffy and Chopper.
Coming up on Iceberg Island, Gaburi got a taste of shaved ice when Luffy got Sanji to make them some upon making landfall. Although the dish gave him, Luffy, and Chopper a bad case of brain freeze, Gaburi was happy because he saw their shared pain as a sign of how like-minded he was with his friends and affirmation that he was one of them.[3]
Further in on the island, the crew found an impassible crevasse in the ice. There, Gaburi used his power to trigger a giant vine in the ice to form a bridge across the crevasse for them. Soon after, the crew found a new ordeal tree, which created a copy of Wapol for the crew to fight. After the Straw Hats defeated the copy and Gaburi converted its remains into a treasure, the latter was surprised to learn that they had just defeated a king and wondered if it was the right thing to do. As he was filled in on how Wapol was a bad guy, Gaburi was surprised to learn that not all humans were good like the Straw Hats. However, Luffy and Robin told him that they were not so pure of heart themselves because they were pirates, adding another layer of complexity about the complicated nature of humans to Gaburi's understanding.[3]
Traveling further across the island, the crew eventually reached a place where Gaburi was needed. Using his powers, Gaburi created footholds across a chasm for them. Reaching the next ordeal tree after that, the crew was confronted with seed copies of Spandam, World Government agents, and Aokiji. Despite the many enemies and their shared pasts, the Straw Hats affirmed their bonds and defeated them all, thereby allowing Gaburi to turn their remains into treasure. Overwhelmed by happiness over how great friendship was, Gaburi felt like crying. However, it also made him question his friendship with the crew; he barely knew anything about them at all, and he began wondering about things such as if he truly was one of them, what a friend does for another, and how to truly be a crewmate. Fortunately, the crew assured him that there was not anything that he was obligated to do to be a friend. All he had to do was what would come naturally when a friend would be in need of his help. Though Gaburi was not entirely sure about what that meant, Sanji assured him that he would understand in due time.[3]
With the obligatory deals on Iceberg Island done, the crew set off for the next island. On the way there, Gaburi said with some uncertainty that the next island would be the last one. Though the crew picked up on his uncertainty, their conversation quickly derailed while Gaburi kept pondering on the meaning of having real friends.[3]
Chapter 4: The Underwater Passage[]
On Cave Island, the crew made their way into the underground isle while Luffy psyched Gaburi up for the trip. Deep inside the island, Gaburi would create a path to the next ordeal tree with his powers. This ordeal took the form of Portgas D. Ace. While Gaburi was confused about why Luffy was so eager to fight someone so close to him and that he seemed to get along with, Zoro told him it was because they were men. Unsatisfied, Gaburi questioned if Ace was a good or bad guy, to which Luffy simply told him that Ace was a guy who makes someone feel good, much to Gaburi's wonder. After the Straw Hats defeated Ace and Gaburi converted him into a treasure, Gaburi shared Luffy's sentiment when he rejected Franky's offer for a shoulder to lean on over his brother's absence.[3]

Gaburi paralyzed by fear after witnessing Teach's malevolence.
In the center of the island, Gaburi made the last ordeal tree appear from a black abyss with his powers. Interacting with this tree, it created a duplicate of Marshall D. Teach. As Teach declared his intention to kill them all for the sake of his ambition, Gaburi was paralyzed by fear. Regardless, the Straw Hats defeated Teach and Gaburi turned his remains into a treasure. In the aftermath, Gaburi admitted to the crew his fear over being faced with a human as evil as Teach, having had no idea that humans like that existed. However, Robin assured him that there were plenty of good people too, and that they would protect him if the time came, much to Gaburi's gratitude. He then affirmed to the crew that with the ordeals cleared, they had to go to Central Island to get the Great Tree's present.[3]
On their way there, the crew pondered over what the present could be. When asked what he would want though, Gaburi confessed that he did not want anything; he just wanted to become an even better friend to the Straw Hats, something that Luffy agreed they should all strive for.[3]
Chapter 5: New Beginnings[]
Arriving on Central Island, Gaburi sensed something beyond a barrier blocking the crew's path. Using his powers, Gaburi opened the path for the group. Making it to the core of the Great Tree, the crew was congratulated for their performance by the Great Tree herself. As Luffy asked for their present, the Great Tree asked Gaburi to step forward. Assured by his friends that she was probably going to give him a MVP reward, Gaburi approached the Great Tree's core, only to be sucked into it in order to be transformed into a suitable present for the Straw Hats.
Inside her core with Gaburi, the Great Tree came to the conclusion that the Straw Hats were not pure of heart. However, Gaburi insisted otherwise, saying that while they were not good people, they were not bad people either. The Great Tree claimed that they evil though, since they were pirates. Even so, Gaburi told her that she was wrong, and tried explaining that the Straw Hats were people who made someone feel good. Deeming that an unacceptable call of judgment, the Great Tree began a deeper analysis of Gaburi's memories, during which it discovered Gaburi's memory of the Marshall D. Teach ordeal. Frightened by the evil nature of Teach, the Great Tree decided to transform Gaburi into the hostile Doom Guardian as a means of self-defense and sat him loose on the Straw Hat Pirates.[3][7]

Gaburi blocking the Doom Guardian's Hakai no Koso, sacrificing himself.
In an attempt to get Gaburi to change back, the Straw Hats fought the Doom Guardian, only for him to restore himself after taking a beating and the original piece of Gaburi that was inside the Doom Guardian to beg Luffy to leave. Pressing on regardless, the Straw Hats beat down the Doom Guardian again and tore Gaburi out of it. However, that made the Doom Guardian go out of control. As he tried shooting the Straw Hats with his Hakai no Koso though, Gaburi blocked the attack with his body. Realizing that he had acted automatically in order to protect his friends, Gaburi bit the crew a tearful goodbye, assured that he was finally one of them, as his body disintegrated while using his remaining power to make the Doom Guardian retreat in an explosion of light.[3]
In the aftermath, Luffy found Gaburi, having been reduced to his original Orb form.[3]
Awakening of a Hero[]
Chapter 1: The Whirling Dust Storm[]
Though weakened and turned back to an Orb, Gaburi retained his consciousness and telepathically urged Luffy to run away, just as the Great Tree began making her next move. After the Straw Hat Pirates escaped Central Island and the Great Tree's reach on the Thousand Sunny, Gaburi urged the group to thrown him into the sea and escape the imminent danger from the Great Tree. Having none of that, the crew decided to help Gaburi regain his strength so he could return to normal. As such, they headed towards the surrounding islands to have him absorb seeds from the ordeal trees and rebuilt his power.[7]

Gaburi is restored from his Orb state in angelic form.
After making landfall on Desert Island, the Straw Hat Pirates had Gaburi use his powers as an Orb to make a pathway for them to an ordeal tree through the terrain. That tree's ordeal took the form of Eustass Kid, the remnants of which Gaburi absorbed after the crew overcame it. However, one seed's remnants were not enough to restore Gaburi, so the crew tracked down another one, using Gaburi's powers along the way to reach it. After the crew overcame that ordeal, which took the form of Crocodile, Gaburi absorbed its remains, which finally let him restore his body, albeit in an angelic form. Though the crew were happy to have him back, Luffy noticed something was off. Admitting that Luffy was right, Gaburi explained on the Thousand Sunny that since the Doom Guardian was a part of him, he could not truly return to normal before they rejoined, and that due to their separation, it was only a matter of time before they both would disappear.[7]
Despite the crew's urging, Gaburi refused to rejoin with the Doom Guardian, as it would mean it would take him over and make him attack them again. However, Brook convinced him that his life was not something to throw away. Still, Gaburi was uncertain of how he could resist the Doom Guardian's control, so the crew told him to come with them to the other islands and eat more seeds to increase his strength so that he could reunite with the Doom Guardian without succumbing to its influence. With a nudge from Zoro, Gaburi declared his intend to stay with the crew, and so they sat off towards the next island. Along the way, the crew inquired Gaburi about what else had changed about him, but he told them that he was otherwise the same despite his new appearance, which led to an amusing conversation.[7]
Chapter 2: The Dawning Memory[]

Gaburi "saves" Usopp from a miniscule stalactite.
Arriving on Reminiscence Island, Gaburi learned a little about puns when the crew made landfall. As they proceeded into the depths of the island, Gaburi would use his powers to open a pathway to a new ordeal tree. This made a miniscule stalactite fall down towards Usopp. Gaburi, believing Usopp to be in genuine danger, thus pushed him head-first out of its way, into a rock wall. At the ordeal tree, the ordeal took the form of Smoker and several Marines. After Smoker was defeated, Gaburi absorbed his seed and converted its remains into treasure. Surprised by how Smoker did not seem like a bad guy, Gaburi was amazed to learn that he was still the crew's enemy because of how his ego clashed with Luffy's, much like how Usopp and Luffy once did, much to Gaburi's surprise. However, the crew turned it into a lesson for Gaburi by telling him to throw his fears away without worrying about what his friends think of him when facing the Doom Guardian, all while believing in his own path.[7]
Making their way to the beach, Gaburi once again used his power to create a pathway to a new ordeal tree, which took the form of Mihawk and Shanks. After the crew overcame these copies, Gaburi once again absorbed their seeds and converted the remains into treasure. He then learned that Luffy and Zoro had respective goals set for themselves that still lay far away from them, which made Gaburi question why they even bothered pursuing them. This prompted Chopper, Brook, Robin, and Franky to explains what dreams were and why people pursue them. The concept of dreams made Gaburi uneasy at first, as the crew explained that some would resort to amoral actions to achieve them, but cheered up upon learning of how dreams drive people forward regardless.[7]
As the crew sailed towards the next island, Gaburi learned of each of the Straw Hat Pirates' dreams, especially Luffy's goal to become Pirate King. That made Gaburi wonder what kind of dream he would want, although Luffy cheered him up by making it clear to him that finding a dream was his goal.[7]
Chapter 3: The Stirring Shadow in the Mist[]
After making landfall on Swamp Island, Gaburi had some fun with the others by emulating their reactions to the island's humid environment. Not long after, Gaburi made a tower, which had an ordeal tree on top of it, lower down to ground level with his powers. The ordeal for this tree became Lucci and Kaku, whom the crew defeated. After Gaburi absorbed their seeds and converted their remnants into treasure though, Gaburi began wondering what kind of dream he could fulfill despite not being very strong or very smart. However, Nami enlightened him by telling him that dreams were not something a person can fulfill, but wants to fulfill step by step.

Gaburi afraid to confront the Oars ordeal on Swamp Island.
Deeper inside the island, the crew found the next ordeal tree after Gaburi cleared the path towards it. Though freaked out by the eerie presence surrounding the tree, Gaburi was urged forward by Zoro. The ordeal soon after turned into Oars, whom Gaburi doubted they could defeat until Luffy and Zoro raised his spirit. After Oars was defeated and Gaburi had consumed and converted his seed though, Gaburi began to doubt if he could defeat the Doom Guardian. Fortunately, his friends assured him that he would get stronger as long as he did not give up. Still, as the crew set sail towards the last island, Gaburi still had his doubts, prompting him to ask how the others got as strong as they were. Despite their different answers, Gaburi was still amazed, but felt that he had not made any progress himself. However, the crew assured him that he had gotten stronger; he just had not realized it.[7]
Chapter 4: The Islands in the Sky[]
Arriving on Floating Island, Gaburi was taught how to become fired up for the challenges ahead. Later, Gaburi would open up the pathways into an ancient fortress with his powers. Soon after, they found an ordeal tree that became Doflamingo. After defeating the lookalike and converting his seed into a treasure, however, Gaburi's fear over facing the Doom Guardian began to surface. Fortunately, Usopp reminded him that he had them to help him and to focus on protecting the people who matters to him, which made Gaburi realize that he could not lose with his friends on his side.[7]

Gaburi summoning the final ordeal tree on Floating Island.
Later, in the center of Floating Island, Gaburi used his powers to summon an ordeal tree from the sky, which Luffy unfortunately bounced all the way to the Thoundsand Sunny with his Gomu Gomu no Balloon. On the ship, the ordeal tree turned into Kizaru, whom the crew managed to defeat. After then absorbing this final seed and converting it, Nami asked Gaburi if he felt any stronger. Gaburi admitted that he did not feel any different, but Usopp convinced him otherwise by psyching him up with conviction.[7]
On the way back to Central Island, the crew decided to defeat the Doom Guardian first, and then have Gaburi step in to reabsorb the entity. As the worst-case scenario began surfacing among the group though, Gaburi promised his friends that he would not lose.[7]
Chapter 5: The Site of the Final Battle[]
Arriving on Central Island, Gaburi opened a pathway into the Great Tree's core room. There, the Great Tree summoned a restored Doom Guardian in her defense. Talking through the Doom Guardian, the Great Tree proclaimed its purpose to the group and how humanity was evil for having people that hated, stole and killed each other among them. Though the crew agreed that there are humans like that out in the world, they also told her that there were plenty of good people out there too, and that they would not let her live if she would kill them for being evil as well. Gaburi added as well that Luffy and his friends had taught him that "good" and "evil" was something not a single individual can categorize, and that humans, for all their flaws, still try their best even when they veer off course and that they had no right to determine their fates. Ignoring them, the Great Tree had the Doom Guardian confront the group.[7]

Gaburi remerges himself with the Demon of Doom.
After the Straw Hat Pirates defeated the Doom Guardian, the Great Tree evolved it into the Demon of Doom. After it was defeated again, Gaburi stepped in and remerged with the Demon of Doom, just as it began restoring itself. Coming into contact with the Great Tree, Gaburi tried telling her that all of humanity was not as evil as she believed them to, only for the Great Tree to retaliate. Fortunately, Gaburi ultimately made the Great Tree come to an understanding with him, and so made the Demon of Doom revert back to himself before it could resume its fight.[7]
Back on Reminiscence Island, Gaburi told the Straw Hat Pirates of how he stopped the Great Tree by having gained a greater understanding of human nature and how the Great Tree went amok after glimpsing the initial fear he felt at the "darkness" in humanity. Gaburi then explained that by reuniting with the Doom Guardian, he had become the true "present" for the crew, allowing him to grant them one, and only one, wish. As the crew argued over what to wish for, Gaburi asked Luffy if he wanted to use his wish to become Pirate King. Luffy, however, turned the offer down, preferring to make his dream come true on his own, and instead let Gaburi have the wish. Gaburi then admitted that in addition to becoming a pirate, his dream was to become Pirate King, and that if he had one wish, he would wish to become human. Declaring then that they would be enemies from here on out, Gaburi parted ways with Luffy with a fist bump, before the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates joined Luffy. Though Gaburi was very sad to part ways with his friends, he ultimately managed to turn away from the crew with a smile.
Some time after, Gaburi, now a human, set out on the calm sea in a barrel with a sail, determined to find himself a crew.
