The God Valley Incident was a large-scale battle that took place on the island of God Valley 38 years ago.[1] Initially a Native Hunting Competition where the World Nobles slaughtered innocent civilians living on the island, the event devolved into chaos due to the arrival of the Rocks Pirates and Roger Pirates. The hidden ruler of the World Government, Imu, intervened in the conflict by possessing Jaygarcia Saturn of the Five Elders, and with the efforts of the Rocks Pirates, Roger Pirates and Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, they simultaneously attacked this figure. However, Imu then transformed Rocks into a demon, forcing Roger and Garp to team up to stop him. This ultimately led to the death of Rocks and disbandment of his crew.

Although a great number of current and future global powers were involved in this event, its recording was severely censored causing its recollection in history to be diminished. Imu's involvement in the event has been kept secret, and those who do know of it only know of Garp and Roger battling Rocks. God Valley itself has since been removed from all maps, having been sunk into the ocean with the World Government treating it as a non-entity which never existed.

Prelude[]

40 years ago, following an assignment, Figarland Garling and his fellow Knights of God stopped on God Valley. After seeing its vast natural resources and discovering that the Davy Family was in hiding there, they offered God Valley membership status with the World Government, but the people declined.[2] While there, Garling also met a local woman, who would eventually bear his children, Shamrock and Shanks, a year later.[3][2] Due to his discoveries and the island's people refusing to join the World Government, Garling proposed that the World Nobles host the next Native Hunting Competition on the island.[2] The pretense for the island being chosen as the "host" for the event was attributed to its name, thought to be blasphemous by the Celestial Dragon community.[4]

A year prior to the Native Hunting Competition, Shakuyaku was abducted from Hachinosu at the request of Garling, who wanted to make her his wife by winning the competition. It has been implied that the World Government bribed Ochoku to allow Shakuyaku's kidnapping, which caused the world economy to grind to a halt.

In order to prepare the island, Garling ordered Marines at his command to round up the local population by using tranquilizer rounds and imprisoned them with the other slaves that were brought to the island, though the details of the Marines' actions were disguised as a "training exercise". Garling also stabbed the mother of his sons and left her for dead; Cadet Monkey D. Dragon, one of the Marines rounding up civilians, discovered the dying woman, who pleaded with him to save her children.[5]

During this pre-event prep, the slave Ginny leaked the event's existence and prizes[6] to the journalist Morgans, who, despite requesting hush money from Cipher Pol, leaked the information to Hachinosu.[6] This resulted in the Rocks Pirates and other pirates sailing to the island. While the bulk of his crew was primarily motivated by wishing to retrieve Shakky or claiming the World Nobles' treasures, Rocks D. Xebec only sought to rescue his wife, Eris, and son, Teach, whom he had hidden on the island. Rocks confided this motive, as well as the truth that he was a member of the Davy Family, in the giant King Harald, who at the time was tasked by the World Government to slay Rocks. The Roger Pirates were also informed of Shakky's presence and wanted to reach the island ahead of the Rocks Pirates.[5] When word reached Marineford that the Rocks Pirates were heading to God Valley, Fleet Admiral Kong requested the presence of Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, who was on vacation. Garp initially refused the order due to his dislike of the World Nobles and belief that the Knights of God provided enough protection for them but changed his mind when informed that his longtime foe Gol D. Roger was also heading there.[6]

Along with the around 100,000 civilians marked as Rabbits, there were 150 Rare Rabbits and 13 Super Rare Rabbits,[7] which consisted of individuals that were viewed as very dangerous to the World Nobles as a whole, such as the Buccaneer Bartholomew Kuma and several members of the Davy Family, including Teach; they were paraded by the MC during the opening ceremony.[5] There were approximately 200 Nobles participating,[6] including members of the Knights of God: Garling of the Figarland Family, Sommers of the Shepherd Family, and Gunko of the Manmayer Family. Also in attendance was Saint Saturn of the Five Elders.[4] Shakky was presented as the grand prize for the tournament,[5] with assorted Devil Fruits as lesser prizes,[6] and the event was broadcast live to Mary Geoise. Prior to the start of the competition, Garling slew the island's king for protesting his subjects being used for the event, an act that resulted in him receiving a penalty for starting early.[4]

Even as chaos erupted, the Knights of God proceeded to kill civilians and pirates alike.

Even as chaos erupted, the Knights of God proceeded to kill civilians and pirates alike.

After giving the civilians a one-hour head start, the competition began, and the participants began hunting down their targets. Disgusted and horrified by the carnage he witnessed, Dragon defied his orders and tranquilized a world noble who was about to kill Kuma. Ironically, the slaughter abruptly ended as numerous infamous pirate crews stormed the island from all sides to claim Shakky and the competition's prizes, with the Rocks Pirates invading from the south and the Roger Pirates from the north. The stationed Marines were outnumbered and unprepared for the pirates but had their morale boosted when Garp arrived with reinforcements. Dragon took advantage of the chaos to don a disguise and escape with Shamrock and Shanks to atone for his failure in protecting the civilians.[6] The Knights of God were dispatched to help the Marines protect and evacuate the rest of their fellow Nobles,[6] but later split to fulfill certain duties. Saint Maffey was tasked with retrieving Garling's children, and a member from the Manmayer family was tasked with suppressing any civilians attempting to escape using the chaos, shooting down a crowd from a distance away.[8]

Maffey tracked down Dragon and seriously wounded him, but before she could finish him off, she was unintentionally interrupted by Edward Newgate. Meanwhile, some of the minor pirate crews on the island ambushed the Rocks Pirates to make a name for themselves but were easily defeated by Newgate, Kaidou, Charlotte Linlin, and Shiki. Garp attacked the four Rocks Pirates, who reluctantly fled from him to avoid prolonging the fight. In the confusion, Dragon escaped with Shanks while Maffey reclaimed Shamrock. Not realizing that Garling had twins and assuming that Dragon was killed, Maffey considered her mission complete.[9]

On the way to Shakky, Roger was caught in a clash with Newgate, so he tasked Silvers Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban with retrieving her. In the chamber where Shakky was detained, several Marines attempted to take her, but she defeated all of them despite being chained. Sommers attempted to kill her, only for Rayleigh to arrive in time and cut him down, saving Shakky. Having Shakky in their hands, the Roger pirates made their escape from the island.[10]

With Shakky rescued and the Rocks Pirates forbidding their subordinates from attacking the Roger Pirates while Shakky was with them, the remaining pirates turned their attention towards the other treasures and started fighting each other for them. The slaves Kuma and Emporio Ivankov took advantage of the chaos to steal two of the Devil Fruit prizes: the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi and the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu. However, Linlin attacked Ivankov and stole the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu. After Kuma ate the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, Saint Saturn confronted the boy, but Kuma managed to flee from him and used his new powers to help the captives escape the the island. Kuma's actions would lead to the rescue of over 500 people, including Ivankov and Ginny.[11][6] Linlin planned to give the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu to her son, Katakuri, but she was ambushed by Kaidou, who stole and ate the fruit for himself.[12]

Meanwhile, Garp came across the corpses of the Native Hunting Competition victims. Shocked and disgusted by what he saw, he confronted Admiral Sengoku through his Den Den Mushi, who only thought of the Competition as a rumor but was just as horrified as Garp. Rocks managed to locate his family and fought against Garling and another Knight of God but was forced to flee with Eris and Teach when the other members of the Davy Family, including his father and grandmother, were transformed into Demons and attacked him. Rocks reluctantly let his wife and son escape without him and fought the pursuing Knights and defeated them.[12]

Imu arrives and possesses Saturn.

Imu arrives and possesses Saturn.

Telepathically learning from Saturn that Rocks was still alive, Imu decided to intervene and possessed Saturn; their presence was sensed by Roger, Garp and Rocks.[12] Through Saturn's body, Imu began attacking both Marines and pirates alike on their way to confront Rocks, who was joined by Linlin, Kaido and Newgate. Roger decided to confront Imu himself after they injured some his crew and ordered Gaban to leave with their remaining crew and loot. Surprised by Imu's appearance, Garp set his sights on them as well, despite being warned of his soldiers of the consequences of turning against one of the Five Elders and working with pirates. Imu briefly addressed Rocks as his Davy Jones, before Rocks, Newgate, Linin, Kaido, Roger and Garp attacked Imu together with Supreme King Haki enhanced attacks, which had no effect.[13]

During the chaos, John betrayed the other Rocks Pirates and used Jiki Jiki no Mi powers to attract all the treasures on the island. Ganzui attacked John in revenge, which led to infighting between several of the Rocks Pirates over their loot. The simultaneous battles prevented Dragon from escaping with Shanks on nearby ship, causing the two to be separated and Shanks to crawl into an empty treasure chest.[13]

As Imu regenerated, they sensed Eris' and Teach's presence on the island and prepared to prevent their escape. Despite Rocks cutting them to pieces, Imu used Domi Reversi to turn Rocks into a demon and ordered him to kill his wife and child to end the Davy bloodline.[13] Rocks used the last of his free will to taunt Imu with his knowledge of Davy Jones and Joy Boy before he was fully transformed and controlled by Imu. Rocks attacked and easily defeated Kaido, Linlin and Newgate, with the latter battle destroying the remaining mountains on the island. Unaware of Imu's influence over their captain, the three believed that Rocks had betrayed them. The controlled Rocks caught up and nearly killed Eris and Teach but the two were saved by Kuma, who teleported them off the island before saving himself. Believing that Eris and Teach were dead, Imu then ordered Rocks to kill any remaining witnesses, including the Marines and his own crew. However, Rocks' rampage was stopped by Garp and Roger; the two then heard Rocks' voice in their heads via the Voice of All Things begging them to kill him.[13][14]

Garp and Roger ordered the respective crews to leave them before before fighting Rocks together. As the fight intensified, the Rocks Pirates lost faith in their captain and slowly began to disband; Gloriosa left with the Roger Pirates; Linlin told Kaido that he was indebted to her for taking the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu from her before departing with Streusen; Newgate was offered by Polo Gram into leaving with his crew; the remaining members fled together or separately with their treasures. Heavily traumatized by the entire ordeal and believing he failed to save the two babies entrusted to him, Dragon ordered a Marine ship gunpoint to help the surviving civilians evacuate the doomed island. After their ship was loaded, Rayleigh and Gaban defied their captain's orders to flee and returned to the island to find Roger. Garp and Roger focused their remaining Supreme King Haki together and their combined attack managed to critically injure Rocks.[1][15]

After Rocks' defeat, all three combatants collapsed from exhaustion. Rocks regained his sanity just as Garling, Maffey and Sommers approached him. Relieved to be free, Rocks silently thanked Roger and Garp before Garling dealt a killing blow to him; like other members of the Will of D., Rocks died with a smile on his face. Meanwhile, Roger and Garp were carried to safety by Rayleigh and Gaban.[16] Speaking through Saturn, Imu ordered God Valley to be destroyed, with the Marine battleships completely obliterating all traces of the island.[17]

Aftermath[]

Following this monumental battle, the World Government went to great lengths to make sure records of the event, as well as demographic and geographic info on God Valley itself, were expunged, with heavy involvement from CP6 and the G-11 Branch of the Marines in the cover-up process. As a result, God Valley was effectively erased from historical documents and world maps. Even veteran Marines who knew of the incident but had no direct involvement in it (such as Sengoku) still only have an incomplete understanding of all the events that took place there.

Sometime later, Shanks was discovered in the chest by the Roger Pirates, who raised him and took him in as an apprentice.[18][19]

Because of his role in the incident (which was twisted and widely reported by Morgans with heavy backing from the government), Garp became greatly renowned, earning the title "Hero of the Marines", something Garp was very upset about due to forcing his life into a lie.[20] He was granted many opportunities to be promoted to Admiral, but he turned them down each time due to not wanting to be the World Nobles' direct subordinate.[1] In addition, Garling was declared the "champion" of God Valley.[21] Roger's involvement, on the other hand, was covered up by the World Government.[1]

Dragon was arrested for insubordination but was later freed by Garp. His exposure to the horrors that the World Nobles were capable of led to his defection from the Marines and eventually to the formation of the Freedom Fighters, who grew into the Revolutionary Army.[5][22]

The defeat of the Rocks Pirates resulted in the crew's disbandment after the death of their captain.[23] The remaining members of the Rocks Pirates, such as Newgate (Whitebeard), Linlin (Big Mom), Kaidou, Shiki, and John, began forming various crews of their own and became legendary pirate captains in their own right.[24] Due to them choosing not to talk about their experiences in their original crew, coupled with the World Government covering up their activities, the existence of the Rocks Pirates faded into obscurity, becoming largely unknown for generations to come.[1]

King Harald was devastated over the loss of his friend, Rocks, and felt guilty over his death because he refused to help him beforehand on the grounds that it would ruin all his hard work to create unity between Giants and Humans. Harald felt that he had made his choice and couldn't turn back, so he decided to double down on his efforts to join the World Government; he sailed to Marineford, broke off his horns, and pledged to do whatever was necessary to turn the history of Elbaph in a new direction, even if he had to be a slave.[25]

In the manga, the God Valley Incident is relatively unknown, with Garp being particularly secretive about it and even middle-ranked Marines remaining unaware of it. However, in the live-action series, the event seems to be well-known and has even been turned into an award-winning show (presumably heavily propagandized) at the Loguetown Opera, under the title "Hero of the Marines". The show appears to be fairly successful, earning a five-star review from the World Economy News Paper describing it as "beautifully directed" and a four-star review describing it as "a historically accurate musical depiction of the God Valley Incident" (which is highly debatable). The opera house has a logo with the word "Manmayer", one of the house names that participated in the attack on top of it. [26]

Trivia[]

  • Figarland Garling received the title of "Champion" of God Valley, but it is unknown if it had any bearing to his role in the incident itself (including dealing the final blow to Rocks) or the competition that preceded it.[27]
  • The God Valley Incident may have been inspired by the Wounded Knee Massacre, where then-First Lieutenant Ernest Albert Garlington (who possibly inspired the name for Garling) warred against unarmed native people, which led to him receiving the Medal of Honor for "distinguished gallantry".
  • The impetus for God Valley Incident may have been inspired by the Trojan War, as Shakuyaku's involvement mirrors Helen of Troy. Both were beautiful women who were abducted (or eloped in Helen's case), resulting in invaders (pirates for Shakky and the Greeks for Helen) sailing to hostile territory (God Valley and Troy, respectively) to reclaim both women.
  • Several known prominent figures were present or involved during the God Valley Incident, including:
