One Piece: Grand Line Dream Adventure Log is a Japanese-only RPG released on June 28, 2002 for the Game Boy Color handheld. It was developed by Alpha Unit and published by Banpresto.

Based on the One Piece manga and anime, the game is a sequel to the 2001 release Birth of Luffy's Dream Pirate Crew!. It adapts events from the Loguetown Arc to the end of the Drum Island Arc before branching off to an original storyline. Similar to its predecessor, the game eventually allows the player to recruit many different characters onto the crew.

Story[]

The game faithfully adapts the storyline from the beginning of the Loguetown Arc to the end of the Drum Island Arc, including the anime-exclusive parts of Loguetown and Warship Island Arc. In addition, the first movie, One Piece: The Movie, is adapted. However, Warship Island Arc and the movie are adapted out their original order, with Warship Island Arc taking place after Reverse Mountain Arc and the movie after Whisky Peak Arc, thus also shifting their locations to the Grand Line. After recruiting Tony Tony Chopper, the Straw Hat Pirates' journey departs from the anime with an original story, introducing new characters and allowing the player to recruit the crew's past allies and enemies.

Original Story[]

With Chopper joining the crew, Luffy and the others threw a party to celebrate. Their festivities were interrupted when another pirate ship approached, helmed by a mysterious man named Mirage. Mirage stole the crew's Eternal Pose to Arabasta as well as their Log Pose. He then brainwashed Luffy to go on a rampage and destroy the Going Merry. After he left, the crew was rescued by a young boy in another, mechanically advanced ship, who brought them and the Merry back to the nearby island, Croissant Island. The boy, Pokori, revealed he was a shipwright and gave the crew an Eternal Pose to Twin Cape.

Forced to make their way back the Grand Line, the crew reached Twin Cape where they received a new Log Pose from Crocus. With the Log Pose, the crew set course for Whisky Peak again. As they sailed the seas, the crew were ambushed by Smoker and Tashigi aboard a Marine vessel. They fled from the Marines after their fight thanks to strong wind and made it to Whisky Peak. They met with Mr. 9, who told the crew the island was now peaceful and had begun constructing a tower called the "Tower of Tranquility". At the tower, the Straw Hat Pirates ran into Apis and a Sennenryu. She told them that other Sennenryu at her island had been captured by invaders, so the crew traveled to Lost Island with an Eternal Pose.

On Lost Island, the crew were met by Fish-Men, who were revealed to be members of the Arlong Pirates. Arlong and his crew had invaded the island to establish "Arlong Park 2". Luffy and the others fought Hatchan, Chew, and Kuroobi before Luffy faced Arlong himself. After two rounds of fighting, their battle was interrupted by a mysterious figure, who claimed he was there to take one of the Sennenryu from Arlong. Luffy was angered that their fight had been stopped, and the man revealed himself to be Dandelion, the leader of Flower Angel. He planned to use the Sennenryu's power to activate a giant ship. Mirage appeared as well, revealing that he was Dandelion's subordinate, and used his ability to hypnotize the Straw Hats so he and Dandelion could leave.

After coming to, the crew heard from Apis that Dandelion had headed in the direction of Croissant Island. They decided to give chase in order to reclaim their Eternal Pose to Arabasta and free the Sennenryu. On Crossaint Island, they were faced with Dandelion's subordinates, Maasu, Choshi, and Tokkuri, who were looking for Pokori. They defeated the trio and met up with an injured Pokori aboard his ship. Pokori informed them that after the Straw Hats departed from the island a few days before, a fleet of ships led by Dandelion had gathered around the Crescent Rock near the coast and were trying to pull it up. Dandelion told him that the rock was actually part of giant ship that they were researching, so Pokori offered to help them. They successfully salvaged the ship and Pokori managed to repair it, having learned about the ship in a book and considering it his "dream ship". However, he has unaware the ship was actually an armed ship so powerful that its creators had deliberately sunk it to prevent its use. When Pokori discovered this, he turned against Dandelion and ran away. He told the Straw Hats that two things were needed to make it move: a Sennenryu and something else he did not understand, a "thoroughly hard object".

The crew and Pokori attempted to raid the giant battleship on the Merry while it was still unable to move, but were faced with a illusory barrier set by Mirage, which left them unable to pinpoint the battleship's location while under fire from its cannons. They retreated back to Crossaint Island where they decided to split up, with the Straw Hats going to search for the "thoroughly hard object" while Pokori remained on the island to try and figure out a way to disable the barrier.

During the trip, the Straw Hat Pirates returned to Reverse Mountain with a Log Pose. Speaking with Crocus, they learned that a man in gold armor had come falling from the sky some days ago. When the crew heard the man also had Devil Fruit powers, they realized that this was Eldoraggo after Luffy had sent him flying on Gold Island. Eldoraggo was convinced that Crocus was keeping some sort of treasure around Twin Cape and went inside Laboon to look for it. The Straw Hats fought him inside the whale and drove him out. They chased him to the lighthouse, where Crocus told them a story from his past, how the previous lighthouse keeper had saved him and his friend during a storm but died in the process. Because of this, Crocus considered the lighthouse itself his treasure. Eldoraggo refused to believe that there was no gold or valuables and went on a rampage, but the Straw Hats defeated him again. Eldoraggo then demanded the crew take him with them to search for gold. (The player can refuse or accept Eldoraggo)

The crew continued to Whisky Peak where they questioned Mr. 9 about the "thoroughly hard object". Mr. 9 was unsure but stated that the materials used to construct the Tower of Tranquility were quite durable. The crew went to inspect the tower, and Vivi concluded that it was possible the materials were what was needed. While they were at the tower, they crew encountered a strange man who complained about the tower having no elegance and ruining the scenery of the Cactus Rocks. When Luffy had no opinion on the matter, the man was angered and stormed off. The crew took part in a banquet arranged by Mr. 9 and stayed the night to witness the grand opening of the tower the next day. The ceremony was interrupted by the man from the previous day, who introduced himself as the Baroque Works Millions agent, Mr. 108. He had been tasked with eliminating all the former Baroque Works agents on the island. Mr. 108 used a binding jutsu to stop the movements of everyone present and destroyed the Tower of Tranquility. He was about to start killing everyone while they could not move, but suddenly Igaram appeared and undid his hypnosis with his saxophone melody. The Straw Hats then fought Mr. 108 in combat. Upon defeating him, they received an Eternal Pose for Whisky Peak. Vivi concluded that the tower materials were not the "thoroughly hard object" after all, as Mr. 108 was able to destroy the tower.

Continuing to Gold Island, thew crew stopped by Ganzo's oden ship where they encountered and fought Buggy, sending him flying. Cabaji was left behind and tried to go after Buggy, but could not pay for for his meal and was forced to wash dishes. On Gold Island, they crew reunited with Tobio and heard that Golass was on the island training. They met with Golass who challenged Zoro to another duel. After being defeated, Golass asked to join the crew on their journey. The crew also encountered the Hyena Three who joined the crew after being defeated. On their way back, the crew stopped by the oden ship again, where Ganzo asked them to take Cabaji with them since he only kept spinning the plates instead of washing them.

Traveling to Little Garden with a Log Pose, the crew met a young blacksmith named Hilt. Hilt had a map in his possession and had come to the island looking for legendary weapons left by his ancestor. They went to consult Brogy and Dorry, but encountered Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine, who were also searching for the "thoroughly hard object". The crew defeated them, but Hilt was later kidnapped by the agents. Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine blackmailed Dorry and Brogy to dig into a cliff where the map pointed to, and found the treasure buried in the cliffs of Little Garden: legendary weapons resembling the Terry Sword and the Bruiser Axe. Hilt tried to protest but Mr. 5 beat him to the ground. The Straw Hat Pirates fought and defeated the pair of agents to rescue Hilt. Maasu appeared to scold Mr. 5 before departing with the legendary axe, which turned out to be the "thoroughly hard object" they were looking for. Despite the axe being stolen, Hilt rewarded the Straw Hat Pirates with an Eternal Pose for Little Garden for helping him.

With both pieces needed to activate the ship in Dandelion's possession, the crew returned to Croissant Island. On the island, they found a note from Pokori revealing that he had figured out a way to get past the barrier and had gone to the giant battleship alone. Mirage's barrier worked by scent hypnosis, so Usopp used a different strong smell to counteract it, and the crew breached the battleship. They found the Sennenryu but were stopped by Maasu and his companions. After defeating them, the pirates freed the dragon. They went to confront Dandelion but were stopped first by Mirage. He summoned his "Shadows," evil apparitions of Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji that followed his commands. Luffy and the others defeated their dark duplicates and retrieved their Eternal Pose to Arabasta. They proceeded to face Dandelion and found Pokori with him. Dandelion tried to convince Pokori to join forces with him, but Pokori swore to sink the battleship into a nearby sea vortex. The Straw Hat Pirates fought Dandelion and his subordinates. After defeating him, Dandelion set off explosives to destroy the cabin around them, in an attempt to bury the pirates. He was unsuccessful, and the crew battled him again, defeating him for good.

During the fight, Pokori exchanged the remaining explosives with fireworks, marking his and the Straw Hat Pirates' victory. Thanking them, he parted ways with Luffy and the others.

Side Quests[]

Post-Game[]

After finishing the game and choosing "load", the game begins from the moment the Straw Hat Pirates arrive at Croissant Island for the final confrontation. The scene plays out the same as originally, with the crew discovering and reading Pokori's note. However, rather than forcing the player to continue to the battleship as during the initial playthrough, the scene is interrupted by the appearance of a drunken old man. The man converses with the Straw Hats, asking if they have been recruiting new crewmates during their adventure, and jokingly offers to join the crew. After the man leaves, the Straw Hats board the Going Merry. Nami wonders what their best course of action is, and the player is given the option to either proceed to the battleship or travel to other islands.

Jango's Dance Carnival[]

An adaptation of Jango's Dance Carnival on Mirrorball Island occurs if Jango is unlocked as a playable character (via transfer from Birth of Luffy's Dream Pirate Crew!). It will be triggered when the player first travels to another island after unlocking Jango.

The story is generally based on the animated short, but with some changes and additions:

  • Jango is a member of the Straw Hat Pirates rather than running into them by coincidence.
  • Nezumi is present on Mirrorball Island and attempts to get revenge on the Straw Hats by commanding the Marine troops on the island.
  • A warehouse scene is added, featuring Minatomo and Luffy pulling various ropes that drop objects on the Marines trying to arrest the crew.

Crew Recruiment[]

The following side quests to recruit further crewmates are optional to the completion of the story. They typically become available on subsequent visits to an island where the main story has already played out.

Gameplay[]

The game is a tradional RPG consisting of field and battle segments. Upon landing at an island, the player selects five characters into the party or "crew". These characters are the only ones that can participate in battle, and cannot be changed without leaving the island first. The party must must contain Luffy.

During field segments, the player controls Luffy and explores the game world. They can talk to NPCs and progress the story by performing specific actions. Occasionally a random enemy encounter will trigger a battle sequence.

During battle segments, three characters from the current party will face off against one to three enemies. The two other party members will remain on stand-by, automatically taking the stage if one of the fighting party members is defeated. Combat is turn-based, with the player the choosing the action for each fighting party member before the round plays out. The available actions are

  • Attack: Performs a basic attack.
  • Special move: Performs a move that drains the character's limited special meter.
  • Guard: Reduces damage from the enemy's attack during the turn.
  • Item: Uses a item on one of the fighting party members. Items have various effects such as restoring health or restoring the special meter.
  • Switch: Switches another party member to the battlefield.
  • Run away: Escapes from the battle (only during random enemy encounters).

Sometimes, the characters may do special actions depending on the circumstances, called SAS (short for "Shocking Action System"). For example, Zoro will sometimes sleep to regain health or counter an enemy attack with "Toro Nagashi".
