While described as a "legendary treasure," in reality, the Great Rainbow is a flock of rainbow-colored birds trapped inside of a treasure chest. The flock possesses the ability to change colors and transform into other animals, like giraffes and hippos. The Great Rainbow can carry grown humans and withstand their weight, flying around with ease. It can also form a swirling vortex, offering travelers like the Straw Hat Pirates a safe path.[1]

One Piece Water Spectacle 2[]
The Straw Hat Pirates traveled to the island where the Great Rainbow was said to be hidden. They decided to host a large rainbow party and were joined by Jinbe, Shirahoshi, the Medaka Mermaid Quintuplets, Straw Hat Grand Fleet, Law, and Hancock.
Before they started their party, the Big Mom Pirates interrupted, having come to take the Great Rainbow for themselves. After the two sides fought and the Straw Hat Pirates claimed victory, Luffy unlocked the Great Rainbow from a treasure chest by punching it open. The rainbow-colored flock flew out of the chest and took the form of other animals, which the Starw Hat Pirates rode on. It lowered the crew down to the beach to meet with their party guests. After the party, the Great Rainbow formed a swirling vortex for the Thousand Sunny to travel through as they left the island.[1]
