Hakowan[2] is Wapol's pet dog, acquired after Wapol was permanently deposed from Drum Island.
Appearance[]
Hakowan used to be a regular dog with small beady eyes and a tongue sticking out, similar to Chouchou, but smaller in size and without a frown.
After Wapol altered him with his Baku Baku no Mi abilities, he now has a box for a head and lenses for eyes.
Personality[]
Hakowan is somewhat disrespectful of others, since he urinated on Wapol when he first met him and kept doing so occasionally. Despite this, he is loyal to the former king, as he stood by his side through the entire cover story and beyond.
History[]
Sky Island Saga[]
Wapol's Omnivorous Hurrah[]
Following his defeat by Luffy, Wapol was forced into complete poverty, living in an unnamed town's garbage dump. Here, he was found by a stray dog that followed—and urinated—on him everywhere he went.[1]
Eventually, Wapol began using his powers to amuse himself by merging random garbage into toys. The dog became swept up among his building materials, having its head merged with a box and two binocular-like lenses.[3] This process apparently did no physical harm to him, and he continued to stay by Wapol's side, serving as a sort of mascot for Wapol's burgeoning toy business.[4]
Wapol, surprisingly, kept the dog through his entire business career, long after he had (re)gained more wealth and status than even Drum's throne had offered him.[5]
Fish-Man Island Saga[]
From the Decks of the World[]
He was again seen next to his master after the establishment of the Evil Black Drum Kingdom.[6]
Whole Cake Island Saga[]
Zou Arc[]
Hakowan was seen being carried by one of Evil Black Drum Kingdom's soldier when all it's citizens rejoiced over their king being invited to the Levely.[7]
Levely Arc[]
Hakowan accompanied Wapol and Kinderella to Mary Geoise.[8]
Translation and Dub Issues[]
His name is a portmanteau of the Japanese term for box (箱, Hako?) and onomatopoeia for a dog's bark (ワン, wan?). It is translated as Boxer in the English edition of the 7th popularity poll, possibly as a reference to the dog breed.[9]

Trivia[]
- Following the timeskip and the establishment of the Evil Black Drum Kingdom, Hakowan appears to have become bipedal, and donned a superhero-esque costume.[6] It is unknown whether this is the actual Hakowan or a toy based off his likeness.[10] Notably, the anime implies that a toy of Hakowan exists,[10] but is separate from the actual Hakowan.[11]
