One Piece Wiki

Hakugan[4] is the helmsman of the Heart Pirates.

Appearance[]

Hakugan is an average-sized man with light brown hair. He covers his face with a white mask featuring a smile design, and like most members of the Heart Pirates, he wears a white boiler suit with the crew's jolly roger on the left breast.

In One Piece novel Law: The Hour of Kikoku, it is revealed that he wears his mask to hide severe burn scars.[3]

Personality[]

Hakugan is loyal to his crew and captain, listening to his orders to the letter.

In the novel, he is shown to be brave and determined, willing to jump into the sea to save a stranger, but also slightly nervous and shy due to his burns and the ostracism he received from the villagers, whom he mostly avoided, trying to only go out in public when absolutely necessary. Despite this, Hakugan is a loving brother and respects the village chief, wanting to meet him after returning from captivity, and was not eager to receive a reward from Law for saving him.[3]

Nanagi[]

Nanagi is Hakugan's younger sister, and the two care deeply about each other. When he returned to Hakkuro Village after being kidnapped, he worried intensely for his sister, scared that she had been ostracized for being related to him.

Abilities and Powers[]

As a Helmsman, Hakugan is capable of steering the Polar Tang, even through the treacherous waters and torrents around Onigashima.[5]

Non-canonically, Hakugan is a very strong swimmer; when he met the Heart Pirates, he was the only person able to save Law from drowning.[3]

Weapons[]

Hakugan wielded an axe while fighting the Beasts Pirates on Zou[1] and a halberd during the Raid on Onigashima.[6]

History[]

Past[]

At some point in the past, the butcher's shop in Hakkuro Village caught fire. Hakugan rushed inside to save the butcher's daughter on the second floor, receiving severe burns in the process. He began wearing a mask to hide the scars, but a distance had grown between him and the other villagers, and he ended up moving to the outskirts to avoid them, only entering town when necessary.

A few days before the events of One Piece novel Law: The Hour of Kikoku, Hakugan was kidnapped from Welbems Island by the Kalik Pirates, who intended to sell him into slavery.[3]

One Piece novel Law: The Hour of Kikoku[]

While they were transporting Hakugan and other potential slaves, the Kalik Pirates ambushed the Heart Pirates; in the chaos, Hakugan was able to cut the ropes holding him and escape. During the ambush, Law fell into the ocean, prompting Hakugan to jump in and rescue him. When the pirate later awoke, he was confused to learn of Hakugan's actions, as he was a pirate just like Kalik Meidara; however, Hakugan argued that they were fundamentally different, as Law's eyes looked like those of a good person.

When Law learned that Hakugan and the hostages were from the South side of Welbems Island, he offered to return them as thanks for saving his life, which Hakugan gladly accepted. Three days later, they arrived at Hakkuro Village, but Hakugan was too nervous to greet the villagers; seeing his hesitation, Law convinced him to visit the village chief, while Hakugan explained his own uncomfortableness in the village after suffering from severe burn scars. However, the chief was overjoyed to see that Hakugan was alive, and he informed Hakugan that his younger sister, Nanagi, was alive and worried about him, but was in a nearby village for the day.

With the Heart Pirates having decided to spend some time in the village, Hakugan offered them to stay in his guest rooms, which they accepted. Later that night, Nanagi returned to the house, and was happy to see Hakugan, though she was suspicious of the visiting pirates. Despite Hakugan's reassurances that they were kind, Law offered to leave if Nanagi didn't trust them after three days, so the pirates stayed for the time.

After the three days, Nanagi had befriended Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin, so she allowed them to stay longer. Eventually, Law asked Hakugan to bring him to a weapons shop so he could replace Kosho, and Hakugan agreed to bring him the next day.[3]

Over the next two days, Hakugan and Law visited the village's three weapon shops, ultimately being brought to Kikoku's shrine by the shopkeeper of the third one. Hakugan and the shopkeeper remained with Law for the two days it took him to tame the sword, before they all returned to Hakkuro Village when they learned of an attack by the Nagels Kingdom.[7]

During the Timeskip[]

A month before Law formed an alliance with the Straw Hat Pirates, Hakugan and the other Heart Pirates went to Zou[8] and were left under the watch of Nekomamushi.[9]

When the Beasts Pirates, led by Jack, invaded Zou in search for Raizo, the Heart Pirates fought alongside the Mink Tribe.[1]

Law Reunites With His Crew

The Heart Pirates reunite with Law.

After Law arrived at Zou around a week later, the Heart Pirates happily reunited with their captain when he came into the Whale Forest. That night, the Heart Pirates briefly met and greet Monkey D. Luffy before Law went to have a private conversation with the Straw Hats. The Guardians later threw a party for the Straw Hats that lasted throughout the night, and the Heart Pirates joined in.[10]

The next day, the Heart Pirates, some of the Straw Hats, Kin'emon, Kanjuro, and Raizo prepared to depart Zou for Wano Country on the Polar Tang.[11]

Wano Country Arc[]

The Heart Pirates later infiltrated Wano Country.[13] After Law was captured to free Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin, the Heart Pirates gathered in Ebisu Town and discussed their captain's situation.[14]

On the day of the Fire Festival, the Heart Pirates entered the battle against the Beasts Pirates.[15] After the guards at the torii gates were defeated by the Straw Hats, the Heart Pirates and the Scabbards (except Kin'emon and Denjiro) traversed to the back of Onigashima in the Polar Tang.[16] When the submarine got close enough, it rose to the surface and Law teleported himself, Bepo, Shachi, Penguin, and the Scabbards with them to Onigashima's back entrance. Once they left, the rest of the crew submerged back underwater.[5]

After Kaidou knocked Luffy off of the floating island, the crew aboard the Polar Tang could hear Luffy's voice and located him underwater.[17] They brought him onto the submarine and pumped the water out of his stomach.[18] Luffy eventually woke up and started demanding for meat.[19]

They eventually docked at Tokage Port for Luffy to regain his strength.[20] After Luffy finished eating, Kouzuki Momonosuke transformed into an adult dragon, which panicked the Heart Pirates who thought it was Kaidou.[6] The Heart Pirates watched in stunned silence as Luffy and Momonosuke bickered over the dragon's struggle to fly. Eventually Momonosuke remembered how and flew up to the island.[21]

The Heart Pirates also made it up the island and were startled as Yamato in his wolf form rushed past them.[22] They entered the Skull Dome and found their way to where Law and Kid were fighting Big Mom. When the Heart and Kid Pirates tried to rush in to save their injured captains, Big Mom had Hera strike them with lightning.[23] Hakugan almost had his lifespan stolen by Big Mom's Soul Pocus technique, but was saved by his captain.[24]

After the Raid on Onigashima, the Heart Pirates joined the victory festival at the Flower Capital.[25]

Polar Tang Destroyed

Polar Tang, led by Hakugan, is destroyed.

After leaving Wano, the Heart Pirates headed towards Winner Island, but were ambushed by the Blackbeard Pirates and forced to land. Shortly after Law decided to face Blackbeard,[26] he ordered Hakugan to take charge of the Polar Tang in a sea battle in an attempt to sink the Emperor's ship.[27]

However, the Heart Pirates were eventually defeated, with only Law and Bepo successfully escaping Winner Island. Hakugan's current status is unknown.[28]
