- For other models of this fruit, see Hito Hito no Mi (Disambiguation).
The Hito Hito no Mi is a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows its user to transform into a human hybrid or a human at will. It was eaten by the reindeer Tony Tony Chopper, turning him into a Human Reindeer (人間トナカイ, Ningen Tonakai?).[2][3]
Etymology
- Hito (人?) is Japanese for "person/human (being)".
- In the English versions, it is called the Human-Human Fruit.
Appearance
The Hito Hito no Mi is a mushroom-shaped fruit with a stem sprouting out of the top, with swirls that go in a curly "S" like-pattern. It has a red top and a whitish stalk, granting it an overall appearance that greatly resembles an Amanita muscaria, which is often used as a stereotyped image of a mushroom.[4]
Strengths and Weaknesses
If consumed by an animal or object, this fruit grants them the intelligence of a human as well as the ability to speak in human language; if the user is an animal, they retain the ability to communicate with other animals as well. Similarly, just like humans, animals will become able to assimilate knowledge and utilize tools, the latter thanks to their now bipedal biology. Like other Zoans, this fruit grants the normal three phases of transformation, but the user will conveniently retain their human intelligence even when not transformed.[2]
Chopper's usage of this fruit was the first to demonstrate that alterations to the traditional Human-Beast Zoan form can be manifested through sufficient training or the use of special substances. As shown by Chopper's utilization of these forms, a practical method for using this fruit in combat is to find ways to combine the user's increased intelligence with the attributes of their original, non-human body.[3] Additionally, the full human transformation is shown to make the user quite large and strong, with Chopper in his full transformation being much bigger than his reindeer and especially hybrid forms, and like many other Zoan users he is significantly stronger in close combat when fully transformed.[2]
However, it does not appear that the user is capable of looking exactly identical to a human even if fully transformed. In Chopper's case, there is still a large patch of fur around his neck and shoulder area and he retains his blue reindeer nose; his full transformation has frequently caused him to be mistaken as a gorilla rather than a human and resulted in him being rejected by reindeer and humans alike.[2] If contained by a sufficiently strong full-body binding, it can stop the user from shifting their forms.[5] Other than that, the user is susceptible to standard Devil Fruit weaknesses.[6][7]
If consumed by a human, this fruit will have no effect on them other than taking away their ability to swim. Oda said in a joking manner that a human who ate this fruit might become "more human-like" or find their "true spirit".[8]
Usage
The powers of the fruit have been used by Chopper in a variety of ways. Chopper mostly uses it in order to interact with and understand humans. He has used the Hito Hito no Mi to a point that he is able to talk to humans while in his normal animal form. In the midst of battle, Chopper has also used his Devil Fruit powers in order to fight enemies with the strength given by the Devil Fruit. With the Rumble Ball he developed, Chopper can further use his Devil Fruit powers to an extent unlike most other Zoan Devil Fruit users.
According to Chopper, during the two years of his absence, he has completely improved all his transformations. Furthermore, he only needs the Rumble Ball to access one transformation point, his previously uncontrollable Monster Point. He can now freely transform into any of his other forms. Chopper still used the Rumble Ball to transform into Guard Point when the crew first encountered the Kraken in the manga, though this was corrected in the anime when he transformed into Guard Point without using a Rumble Ball. In an SBS, Oda jokingly stated that Chopper had actually eaten a Rumble Ball Candy in the manga, confirming that it was an error.[9]
Normal Transformations
Like all Zoan Devil Fruit users, Chopper possesses the ability to turn into three forms. These forms are called Walk Point, his normal form, Brain Point, his human hybrid form, and Heavy Point, his human form.
Walk Point
Walk Point (
Being his original form, this is apparently the only form that actually ages as Chopper grows older. It is unknown whether or not his overall aging process is halted or even nullified whenever he assumed his other Zoan forms. Despite reindeer physiology lacking the vocal cords for human speech, Chopper is able to speak freely in this form, similar to a few other animals in the One Piece World like Pappag. During battle, Chopper usually uses this to run across the battlefield to dodge an enemy's attack or otherwise. During any other time, Chopper is completely disguised in this form as he usually looks like a pet. This form also allows him to track his friends or enemies more easily thanks to the reindeer's strong sense of smell. Chopper looks like a typical reindeer in this form, the only thing differentiating him from other reindeer, other than his clothes, being his abnormally colored blue nose, which is mostly noticed by other reindeer. His antlers are also non-pointed, as opposed to those of other reindeer.
At 9 years old, this form was relatively small and resembled a regular reindeer fawn. It had a short snout and no fur at the shoulders. At 15 years old, this form was more mature with a longer snout and prominent fur at the shoulders. At 17 years old, this form drastically matured and became more stag-like. Chopper's size has grown to a full-sized reindeer (at a size smaller than a horse), allowing others to even ride on him. His antlers have grown and branched out. His fur in this form is also notably fluffier.[11]
Brain Point
Brain Point (
The named Devil Fruit techniques Chopper can use while in this form are as follows:
- Scope (
診断 , Sukōpu?, literally meaning "Diagnosis"): This can only be used when in Brain Point form and after eating a "Rumble Ball", a move in which he concentrates and scans his opponent to find their weakness. When this move was first shown to Luffy, he assumed that Chopper would fire a beam against Chessmarimo.[16] The reasoning behind this assumption is because the way Chopper holds his hooves up to perform this move visually looks like a Dragon Ball move, the Kikōhō technique most likely in question. This was first used against Chessmarimo. In the 4Kids dub, this is called Rumble Scope, but it keeps its original name in the Funimation dub.
Heavy Point
Heavy Point (
After the two-year timeskip, Chopper's Heavy Point has grown much larger as well as more muscular, making him appear even more monstrous than before. In this form, he was able to block a powerful strike from a drug enhanced Dosun's hammer by punching it head on and receiving just a little bit of damage to his hand, the same hammer that smashed a building off its foundations with a single blow.
The named Devil Fruit techniques Chopper can use while in this form are as follows:
- Heavy Gong (
重量 ゴング, Hebī Gongu?, literally meaning "Weight Gong"): A basic punch to the face that can be used by Chopper in Heavy Point. This was first seen being used on Kumadori.[19] This technique keeps its original name in the English versions. - Robi-Cho Suplex (ロビッチョスープレックス, Robiccho Sūpurekkusu?): A combo technique that can be done by Chopper and Robin while Chopper is in Heavy Point. After Chopper grabs an opponent in Heavy Point, Robin sprouts leg after leg under Chopper's feet with Pierna Fleur. When a desired height is achieved, Chopper would jump off his "stilts" and crush the opponent's head in a suplex move. This was first seen being used against Hogback; however, before he could finish his attack, Oars appeared and interrupted him.[20]
- Super Frapper Gong (スーパーフラッパーゴング, Sūpā Furappā Gongu?): A combo technique that can be done with Chopper and Franky while Chopper is in Heavy Point. Used in conjunction with Franky's Strong Hammer, Chopper and Franky both simultaneously punch an opponent's face. The name combines FRAnky and ChoPPER's names and Chopper's Heavy Gong and Franky's use of the word SUPER. This was first seen being used to punch Oars in the jaw.[21]
- Gomu Gomu no Heavy Stamp (ゴムゴムのヘビースタンプ, Gomu Gomu no Hebī Sutanpu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Weight Stamp"): A combo attack between Luffy and Chopper. Luffy performs a normal Gomu Gomu no Stamp while Chopper activates Heavy Point and throws a Heavy Gong. It was first used against several prison guards in Udon.[22] In the VIZ manga, this is called Gum-Gum Heavy Stamp.
Rumble Ball Transformations
- Further information: Rumble Ball
Along with his normal forms, Chopper has added on to these by use of the Rumble Ball. This yellow jawbreaker-like drug gives him several more transformations for three minutes by "distorting the wavelengths of transformation".[23] These forms are most effective in battle against difficult enemies.
While Chopper gains an edge in battle with these forms and the Rumble Ball, the number of the Rumble Balls Chopper can take in under six hours must be carefully monitored. If Chopper takes two under six hours, he cannot control which form he will become when he transforms. If he takes three, Chopper turns into a deadly form to both himself and others around him.[24]
After the two-year timeskip, Chopper only needs to use the Rumble Ball for his Monster Point.
- Rumble (ランブル, Ranburu?): Not actually an "attack", but just what Chopper says whenever he consumes a Rumble Ball to use the rest of their transformations.
Guard Point
Guard Point (
While this form's defensive capabilities are high, it does not seem to allow Chopper to perform any sort of attack. So in order to attack, Chopper has to change to another form. In the anime however, Chopper has been depicted attacking in this form. By using the form's dense fur, Chopper attacks an enemy like a large furry moving boulder. Chopper was first seen in the anime attacking in such a manner against Hockera.[28]
After the two-year timeskip, the Guard Point has greatly increased in size, such that it was big enough to protect the Thousand Sunny from a blow from the Kraken's tentacle. As with his other forms, Chopper is now able to transform in this form without using a Rumble Ball. Although Chopper used a Rumble Ball to transform against the kraken in the manga, this was later confirmed to be an error.[29][9]
When Chopper used Guard Point against the Kraken, it was noticeably larger than when Franky used it after being switched into his body.[30] It is currently unknown whether this was due to Chopper having greater control over his body than Franky, or whether Chopper is now able to freely control the size of the transformation. The Guard Point is also strong enough now to be able to block a direct attack from Big Mom, one of the Four Emperors.[31] He could even block a barrage of attacks from one of the Five Elders, Jaygarcia Saturn's poisonous spider legs.[32]
The named Devil Fruit techniques Chopper can use while in this form are as follows:
- Chopper Sensha (チョッパー戦車, Choppā Sensha?, literally meaning "Chopper Tank"): Chopper enters into Guard Point while several guns are surrounding him. The guns get caught up in his fur, allowing him to fire them all at once. Because Chopper was rejuvenated by Ain to the age of five, his Guard Point is much smaller, thus the attack is much weaker than it could have been. This attack was used against the Neo Marines.[33]
Horn Point
Horn Point (
After two years, the appearance of Chopper's Horn Point has evolved and changed drastically. He can now stand on two legs in this form and the shape and size of his antlers have changed and grown greatly, though less sharp, becoming much thicker while resembling that of a stag beetle. His forearms are now larger (similar to Franky's pre-timeskip) and he now has hooves instead of hands. Furthermore, his legs and feet have a humanoid structure though they are still hooved. Chopper's face is similar to that of his Brain Point and he also has a hairier back. He has become taller as well and is now skilled with digging to the extent that he is comparable to Daruma of the New Fish-Man Pirates. It is unknown if he can still transform into his old Horn Point form.
The named Devil Fruit techniques Chopper can use while in this form are as follows:
- Hissatsu Uso-Cho Hammer Suisei (必殺ウソッチョハンマー彗星, Hissatsu Uso-Cho Hanmā Suisei?, literally meaning "Sure-Kill Uso-Cho Hammer Comet"): A combo attack between Usopp and Chopper, Chopper transforms into his Horn Point form and Usopp uses Chopper's antlers and a large rubber band as a slingshot to fire the hammer Usopp uses for his Usopp Hammer attack at the opponent with tremendous force. This was first seen being used against Mr. 4.[35] This is called Killer Usopp's Hammer Shooting Star in the Viz Manga, Usopp-Chopper Attack: Hammer Comet in the Funimation dub, Hammer Shooting Star in the 4Kids dub, and Uso-Cho Hammer Shooting Star in the Funimation dub of Movie 8.
- Roseo Colonnade (
桜並木 , Rozeo Koronēdo?, literally meaning "Cherry Blossom Colonnade"): An attack used when Chopper is up against several opponents at once, he chases his opponents and tosses them in the air with his antlers. When they land, their head ends up embedded in the ground with their body sticking straight up out of the ground like a column. This was first seen being used against the Franky Family. "Colonnade" is an architecture term for a symmetrical arrangement of stone columns, used to support the roofs of ancient buildings like churches and palaces, or in this case the (symmetrical) appearance of Chopper's defeated enemies. In the Funimation dub of One Piece: Unlimited Adventure this is called Roseo Coronedo, while in the Funimation dub it retains its original name, and in the Viz Manga and Funimation subs, this is called Colonnade Rose. - Kakuho: Elf (角砲
11 , Kakuhō: Erufu?, literally meaning "Horn Cannon: Eleven"): Chopper launches himself out of the ground (from previously digging below the surface) and goes flying horns first into his opponent. This was first seen being used against Dosun.[36] Elf, in this case, is German for "eleven" (probably referring to horns forming "11"). This is called Horn Cannon Elf in the Viz manga and Funimation adaptions.
Kung Fu Point
Kung Fu Point (
In this form, Chopper is very proficient in kung fu, allowing versatile movement, and making him strong enough to easily take down several Ammo Knights that were sent to arrest him and Sanji. It seems that it combines the power of Arm Point and the acrobatic skill of Jumping Point though to a lesser degree than each individual point. In this form, Chopper has been shown to possess enough strength to easily break down giant steel doors.
Chopper's voice in this form is his voice but with high-pitched yells.
The named Devil Fruit techniques Chopper can use while in this form are as follows:
- Robi-Cho Daisenpu (ロビッチョ大旋風, Robiccho Daisenpū?, literally meaning "Robi-Cho Great Whirlwind"): Called Chopper and Robin's Vortex in the Funimation adaptations, Robin first elevates Chopper while he's in Kung Fu Point with Mil Fleur: Gigantesco Mano, followed by Chopper rotating quickly enough to create a whirlwind. This was used when the two were protecting Brook from a rain of arrows launched at him via a trap in the Heart of Gold special.
- Kung Fu Boost Combo One: A combo used by Chopper as his Kung Fu Point's Special Attack in One Piece: Burning Blood.
Jumping Point
Jumping Point (
Arm Point
Arm Point (
Though Chopper indicates that he can no longer access this point post-timeskip (and has not used it canonically since the crew reunited), during the Heart of Gold special Chopper used Arm Point when he was forced to combat a triceratops that attempted to attack Usopp.
The named Devil Fruit techniques Chopper can use while in this form are as follows:
- Kokutei Roseo (刻蹄
桜 , Kokutei Rozeo?, literally meaning "Carving Hoof Cherry Blossom"): Chopper punches the opponent with such a force that his hoof leaves an imprint in his victim that looks like a sakura petal. This technique was first seen being used to defeat Chessmarimo.[40] This is called Cloven Rose in the Viz English Manga, Reindeer Roundhouse in the 4Kids dub, and Hoofprint Roseo and later Cloven Roseo in the Funimation dub.
- Kokutei Cross (刻蹄
十字架 , Kokutei Kurosu?, literally meaning "Carving Hoof Cross"): Another punching attack where Chopper hits his opponent with insane force, but this time he puts both hooves together at the right or left side of his body, wrist to wrist. When he strikes, he spreads his "fingers" apart so that the imprint left in the opponent's body looks like an 'X' with a force equaling to at least twice that of the normal Kokutei Roseo. This technique was first seen being used to defeat Gedatsu in Skypiea.[41] In the Viz Manga and Funimation dub, this is called Cloven Cross.
- Kokutei Roseo Metel (刻蹄
桜吹雪 , Kokutei Rozeo Michiēri?, literally meaning "Carving Hoof Cherry Blossom Blizzard"): Chopper's strongest attack. Chopper starts off by putting his hooves together on the right side or left side of his body, as if setting up for a Kokutei Cross attack, then he runs or jumps towards his opponent, and hits the opponent over their entire body with a barrage of Kokutei Roseo punches. The hoof-mark imprints look like a large group of falling sakura petals. This was first seen being used against Kumadori.[42] Metel (Метель) is Russian for "snowstorm". This is called Cloven Roseo Metel in the Funimation dub, Roseo Michelli in the Funimation Unlimited Adventure dub, Cloven Rose Blizzard in the Viz Manga, and Hoofprint Blizzard Rose in the Funimation simulcast subs.
- Armée de L'Air Kokutei Roseo Shoot (
空軍 刻蹄桜 シュート, Arume do Rēru Kokutei Rozeo Shūto?, literally meaning "Air Force Carving Hoof Cherry Blossom Shoot"): A combo attack where Chopper jumps onto Sanji's legs. Chopper is then propelled towards an opponent by Sanji's kick. With the force of Sanji's kick and the force of his own arms, Chopper creates a giant-sized hoof imprint larger than he does normally with Kokutei Roseo. This was first seen being used on Oars.[43] - Kokutei Diamond (刻蹄
菱形 , Kokutei Daiyamondo?, literally meaning "Carving Hoof Diamond"): Similar in principle to Kokutei Cross, Chopper punches an opponent while he holds his hooves close together. The result leaves an imprint that looks like a diamond. This was first seen being used against a giant flying fish of the Flying Fish Riders.[44] In the Viz Manga and Funimation dub, this is called Cloven Diamond.
Monster Point
Before the timeskip, the consumption of three Rumble Balls in under six hours gave Chopper an additional Rumble Ball transformation, appearing to be a combination of all Chopper's Points except Brain Point (Heavy Point stance, Arm Point strength, Walk Point speed, Horn Point horns, Jump Point legs, and Guard Point hair). The form comes with an incredible increase in height, even dwarfing the already inhumanly tall Kumadori and Bartholomew Kuma. Thus, it is considered a type of gigantification, resembling a wendigo in appearance.[45] It also has hands unique to all the others; he retains five fingers analogous to a human's, but each digit is replaced by a thick, long, black hoof in the shape of a finger. Prior to the time skip, his eyes were also altered in this form, becoming glowing cyan (red in Episode of Merry, Unlimited Adventure and Unlimited Cruise) with no visible difference between sclera, iris, and pupil.
The transformation grants Chopper a tremendous boost in his physical attributes. His body becomes incredibly dense and durable, as Kumadori could not harm Chopper with his Shigan and Rankyaku attacks, while Kalifa's Rankyaku simply bounced off of his face, all the while without any recoil.
Offense-wise, he possesses immense raw strength, and according to Dr. Kureha, Chopper once leveled an entire village on Drum Island when he achieved this form for the first time. He was able to defeat very powerful opponents with ease, as seen when he used sheer brute force to smash through CP9 member Kumadori's Tekkai and then tossed the man's unconscious body several miles away; Chopper's roar alone was fearsome enough to disable some of Kumadori's techniques. Even Sentomaru was forced to use his axe (which he only does in the toughest situations), but still struggled against Monster Chopper. When Franky (in Chopper's body) began to rampage in this form, he was able to lift up a fallen, icy mountaintop and hurl it with enough force to knock a giant unconscious. Luffy was forced to use his Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun technique to stop him (which had previously only been used to defeat opponents such as the Kraken and an Energy Steroid-enhanced Hody Jones).[46]
There were, however, two serious downsides to this form. The first was that before the timeskip, Chopper lost consciousness upon entering this form, meaning that it was no more than a berserker state. Kureha even commented on this form being that of a true monster; a danger to friend, foe, and even Chopper himself.[24] That statement reflected the form's second weakness: as Zoro observed, this transformation was potentially lethal to Chopper, as the amount of energy needed to maintain the form was too much for his body to handle.[47]
There were only two ways to end this form: an unspecified amount of time passing for when the Rumble Ball wears off (a period of less than three days, given that he was sent flying by Kuma while in Monster Point and landed in his Brain Point form), or when Chopper's Devil Fruit powers are negated by standard Devil Fruit weaknesses such as seawater, as demonstrated by Franky when he blasted him into the sea. Either way, Chopper is rendered temporarily unable to move once he returns to normal due to stress placed on his body.
At first, this form was not given a proper name. It is referred to as Monster (
After the timeskip, Chopper has gained the ability to keep control of himself and communicate coherently while in this form which he named Monster Point (
The named Devil Fruit techniques Chopper can use while in this form are as follows:
- Kokutei: Palme (刻蹄
椰子 , Kokutei: Parume?, literally meaning "Carving Hoof: Palm"): Chopper strikes his opponent open handed; driving his large, hoof-like fingers into them. When first used against Dosun, its power was such that it shattered his iron hammer and left the fish-man critically injured.[52] In the Viz manga and Funimation subs, this is called Cloven Rose, Palm. In the Funimation dub this is called Cloven Roseo, Palm, as well as in the menu of One Piece: Unlimited World Red (Scratching Hoof, Palm Tree in a cutscene).
Babyjiji
Later with Caesar Clown's help, by improving the duration time for the Rumble Ball, Chopper was able to lengthen the amount of time he has with Monster Point to 30 minutes.[45] However, the new side-effects cause Chopper to regress to an infant-based state known as Babyjiji (ベビジジー, Bebijijī?, English: "Baby Geezer") when the effects wear off. In this form, Chopper is small enough to fit in the palms of Tristan, a normal-sized person, and speaks like an old man, further emphasizing the form's name.[53] The side effects last for about 15 minutes.[54][55]
History
When Chopper was a young and normal reindeer (aside his blue-colored nose), he ate the Hito Hito no Mi. This immediately granted him human intelligence and made him finally aware of his herd ostracizing him for his oddity, which was further increased to the point of kicking him out for eating the fruit.[2]
Trivia
- In a response to a fan who was slightly confused on how Chopper was clinching his hooves in a fist, Oda showed how Chopper would perform Rock, Paper, and Scissors with his hands. His first drawing showed how Chopper would normally perform the said actions with normal human hands. The second one however showed how Chopper would do them with his hooves.[56]
- In a response to a fan who wondered exactly how Chopper holds things while in Brain Point, Oda showed how he does it through some simple drawings as shown above.[57]
- The hybrid form of humans who eat a Zoan Devil Fruit is often the largest one, larger than both natural and fully transformed forms. However, in the case of Chopper, it is the opposite; the hybrid form is smaller than the other two.
- Chopper in his pre-timeskip Monster Point is similar to that of Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde. In both cases, the doctor (Chopper and Jekyll) ingests a medicine they themselves have invented and transforms into a monster (Monster Point) and/or goes insane (Hyde). Also, in both cases, after waking up after the medicine wears off, neither remember what they've done while going berserk.
- Chopper's Arm Point has different feet in the anime. When Chopper uses Arm Point on Drum Island in the manga, Chopper's feet are never actually shown, so in the anime, his feet are drawn in as reindeer hooves from then on.[58] However, later in the manga in Skypiea, long after the Drum Island Arc was animated, it is shown that his feet should be human.[59]
- For some reason, whenever Chopper's Devil Fruit is negated through means such as seawater, instead of reverting to his reindeer form, he goes into his hybrid form, which exists only due to the Hito Hito no Mi's presence.
- Although Chopper shouldn't eat more than one Rumble Ball within six hours, in the filler part of the Davy Back Fight he took two right after another in the "Hit and Deadball" game. Thus, this is one of the plot holes Toei Animation created. However, because this was done before Oda got to that part in the manga, they had no way of knowing.[60] To reconcile this plot hole, the ill effects caused by consuming two consecutive Rumble Balls would have to be considered hit or miss.
- It is currently unknown if Chopper can now use his Scope ability while in Brain Point, without the use of a Rumble Ball, because as he stated himself, he has improved all of his transformations after the timeskip, that would include his hybrid form as well, and only needs the drug for Monster Point.
- Through his development of the Rumble Ball, Chopper is the first Devil Fruit user to artificially augment his Devil Fruit powers.
- Chopper's Monster Point before the 2-year timeskip is rather like the mink's Sulong form. In both, they grow bigger and stronger, but if inexperienced, both will go berserk.
- In the anime, PX-1 failed to recognize Chopper in his Monster Point.[61]
- The Hito Hito no Mi's mushroom-like appearance may be a reference to the genetic composition of mushrooms being actually more similar to humans than plants.
