The Toei Animation One Piece anime has been released on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray in Japan. The TV series has been released by Avex Group, the first nine movies were released by Toei Video and Movies 10 onward have been released by Pony Canyon. More than 100 DVDs have been released.[citation needed]
The TV series is divided into "Seasons" for home video and initially released as single disc "Pieces" containing 2-5 episodes; the first DVD was released on February 21, 2001 and contained four episodes. The Pieces were released simultaneously on VHS and DVD during the first three seasons,[1] and rental VHS versions continued to be released until the end of season eight.[2] Starting with Episode 575 (Z's Ambition and Season 16), the "pieces" were also released on Blu-ray. Some episodes, such as movie tie-ins and the Boss Luffy Historical Special episodes, are released as special episodes outside of the Seasons, though the episode numbering remains unchanged.
"Log" re-releases, containing 13-19 episodes, followed from July 23, 2010 on DVD only. The Logs split the series differently to the Seasons and skip some groups of episodes that weren't based on manga material. "Eternal Log" releases will begin from January 2021 on Blu-ray, with the first release containing the first sixty-one episodes in standard definition.[3]
The first 206 episodes were originally produced in 4:3 "Fullscreen" and episodes 207 onward were produced in 16:9 "widescreen", however some releases crop episodes from their original aspect ratio. Avex released episodes 207-229 (from the Davy Back Fight arc to the crew's arrival at Water 7) in 4:3 for the Season and Log releases, cutting the sides from the image.[4] Despite the rest of the series being available on DVD in the unaltered 16:9 ratio, Avex has provided cropped 4:3 versions to DVD rental stores in Japan; this caused the misconception among international fans that all Japanese DVD copies of the episodes were in 4:3 after copies of the rental versions were circulated online. Conversely, the first 206 episodes were cropped from 4:3 to 16:9 (cutting the top and bottom of the image) for the "Special Edition" broadcasts, and the "Eternal Log" Blu-ray will contain the 16:9 versions.
