Philosophy[]
The book defines two personality types, Yankee (ヤンキー, Yankī?) and Otaku (オタク, Otaku?), and assigns each person one of them. Notable traits of each personality type are:
- Yankee
- Good at communicating
- Considers their friends very precious
- Puts a lot of importance on effort and passion
- Takes care of others
- Kind to their friends
- High level of belonging in their group
- Energetic and supportive
- Goes through with what they've decided on
- Often takes the lead in their group
- Otaku
- Values diversity
- Maintains a global vision of things
- Favors reason over passion
- Likes to collect and analyze information for their hobbies
- Makes friends related to their interests
- Doesn't act until they're convinced
- Favors the individual over the collective
Each real person is a mix of Yankee and Otaku, and should aim to reach a middle ground: the Otayan (おたやん, Otayan?). It is noted that people tend to approach Otayan as they age and mature.
In addition, the leanings of various One Piece characters are specified in the book:
- Yankee
- Otaku
- Otayan
Large parts of the book center around handling interactions between the three personality types, and being tolerant towards other types than your own. They estimate that a 5/3/2 split of Yankee/Otaku/Oyatan creates a balanced team, noting the Straw Hat Pirates as an example. This group split also allows those with more extreme Yankee/Otaku personality types to be positively influenced by each other.
Beyond simply personality traits, the Yankee and Otaku models are also used to classify organizational structures. Yankee groups contain members all following a similar goal with a strictly-defined vertical (pyramid) hierarchy, while Otaku groups are more independently-focused, with a vertical hierarchy. The Marines and Straw Hat Pirates are defined as Yankee and Otaku groups respectively, and it is noted that groups tend to be made up primarily of members matching the type of the group. Hybrid models also exist within groups, like the Seven Warlords of the Sea; an Otaku group within a Yankee organization.
