Jörmungandr is a giant serpent from Elbaph mythology. It was manifested into reality from the fear of one of the Walrus School children[1] by Rimoshifu Killingham, using the power of his Devil Fruit.[2]

Appearance[]

The Jörmungandr manifested into reality takes the form of a massive serpent that dwarfs even the giants. It has a dark mane running across its body, a mouth full of sharp teeth, and a long forked tongue.[1]

Personality[]

Jörmungandr appears to be considered evil in Elbaph legends, as it was the biggest fear of one of the Walrus School students. This supposed evilness was manifested into the "dream" entity by the God's Knights member Killingham, which attacked the school and attempted to ear Aegir.[1]

Even beyond its morality, Jörmungandr is considered the "serpent of the apocalypse" in legends.[1]

Abilities and Powers[]

As a giant snake, Jörmungandr has considerable strength, and its jaw is powerful enough to easily bite through wood. Jörmungandr's strength is part of its legend, though the "dream" monster created by Killingham appears to be much weaker, having lost instantly to Kiba and Saul.[1]

History[]

Past[]

At some point in the past, Jörmungandr entered Elbaph legend as a powerful snake who "brought an end to the weak".[1]

Saul Beats Jormundgandr

Saul defeats Jörmungandr.

One of the students of Ange's class at the Walrus School drew a picture of Jörmungandr as their greatest fear. When the God's Knights member Rimoshifu Killingham[2] brought the various fears of the school children to life in order to terrorize the school, Jörmungandr was one of the constructs created.

Upon its arrival at the schoolyard, most of the children fled while calling for the school's staff. Before it could devour a student named Aegir, it was struck by the principal, Kiba, and finished off with a haki-coated punch by Saul.[1]

Translation and Dub Issues[]

In the VIZ release of Chapter 1142, Jörmungandr is initially spelled "Jormundgandr". The error is corrected later in the chapter, where it is called "Jormungandr".

When Jörmungandr is described as the "serpent of the apocalypse" (終末のヘビ, shūmatsu no hebi?), one of the children questions, "You mean Saturday?" In Japanese, this is a pun involving the homophones shūmatsu (終末?, "end; apocalypse") and shūmatsu (週末?, "weekend"). In the VIZ translation, Jörmungandr is instead described as the "snake that brings an end to the weak" to preserve the pun.

Trivia[]

  • In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr is a giant sea serpent who encircles the Earth.
  • In the Land of Gods, there is a snake named Hilmungardr, whose name is also a nod to Jörmungandr.
