Merveille, also known as the "Hidden Land in the Clouds", is a hidden archipelago of floating isles in Paradise and served as the base of operations for the Golden Lion Pirates. It is where Shiki and his scientist, Indigo, created many mutated animals in the hopes of having an army to overthrow the world. Of these animals shown 22 years ago is a land-walking squid, giraffes as tall as skyscrapers, and a giant turtle-like creature.[1]

Non-canonically, it also contains people who have feathers on their arms that enable flight. The island is also home to the rare IQ plant, in which Indigo used as a basis for his SIQ drugs for creating the mutant army, as well as the Daft Green.[2]

Appearance[]

In canon, Merveille was shown to include a lush forest, with numerous mountains and ruins. The mountain peaks are extremely high, reaching up into the clouds.[1] In Film: Strong World, it was shown that Merveille is a collection of small islands, each with their own flora and ecosystem, as well as several bodies of water. Using the Fuwa Fuwa no Mi, Shiki caused these islands to float, causing them to appear suspended in the air. The island with the tallest peak, which reached into the clouds from the surface, became the primary island in the archipelago.[2]

Citizens[]

Non-canonically, many of Merveille's human citizens have been mutated to a small degree, likely due to exposure to SIQ. As a result of the mutation, they have grown feathers underneath their arms and given them the ability to fly.

History[]

Past[]

22 years ago, Dr. Indigo began his researching on Merveille. When Shiki escaped from Impel Down, he traveled to the island to meet up with the scientist, where he was informed that his plans would take 20 years to accomplish; hearing this, he decided to wait, resolving to bring hell to the world when the time came.[1]

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

Summit War Saga[]

One Piece Film: Strong World[]

The island was turned into a floating sky fortress with Shiki's levitating abilities, and an ancient Japanese-stylized palace in the center of it that served as Shiki's base of operations. After a grueling battle between Shiki and Monkey D. Luffy, when the latter destroyed by Gomu Gomu no Gigant Thor Axe. Shiki's flying powers over the little islands around Merveille was deactivated, and came crashing down into the sea where the land mass contracted, trapping the mutated beasts within, freeing them from Shiki's control but still remaining secluded from the rest of the world.

Concludes non-canon section.

Translation and Dub Issues[]

  • Its name was incorrectly spelled on the Eternal Pose shown in Shiki's mess hall, which indicates "Merville".
Merville Strong World
The Eternal Pose spelling Merville.

Trivia[]

  • Merveille is the French word for "wonder".
  • Merveille is referenced in a One Piece Odyssey in a loading screen, which provides information on the island, and in various Combat Log entries. This is due to many of the game's enemies originating from or being subspecies of those originating from the island.
