Since One Piece is a long-running series with a large number of characters and plotlines, fans frequently speculate about future events and elements that are shrouded in secrecy. While speculating and making theories can be enjoyable, it can also result in other fans believing that a speculation is a fact.

One way this can happen is if a fan is not caught up to the series, and they see another fan talk about their vision of what an unrevealed plot element will turn out to be. The first fan assumes that the second fan is at a point in the series when that plot element is explained, and so believes that their speculation is true. Additionally, fans may try to "fill in the gaps" of a character's profile and use deductive reasoning to assert that they performed a certain action offscreen, or possess some attribute that has not been plainly shown. Unless there is indisputable evidence that this assertion is correct, it is considered speculation if it is not confirmed in canon, no matter how logical it may be.

Finally, fans may speculate about something without knowing that it has already been resolved. This typically happens when the question is answered in a less notable canon source, like a databook. The "Resolved" section of this page thus focuses on resolved issues that fans may still continue to speculate about. If a speculation in the "Open" section is resolved, it may be moved to the Resolved section for a short time, but should then be removed from the page unless there is still confusion over it.

This is not a place to post your personal theories. Speculations are only added here if they come up around a large part of the community. If you wish to post your theories, use the blogs or forums.

No matter how prevalent a speculation is among the community, do not post speculations in any other article, even if simply noting it as a popular speculation. For more information, see One Piece Wiki:Speculations.

Open

D Means...

1. Myth: Dragon appeared in Loguetown and Luffy was able to hear the dragon talking in the Warship Island Arc. The D must mean DRAGON.

Fact: The Warship Island Arc was not canon. Therefore everything in it (except for a few things like the Calm Belt information) was not written in the manga by Oda. This rumor was originally created by a popular anime blogger who took a wild guess after watching the arc. Due to the popularity of said blog, others also pondered on the idea (though some fans came to this meaning on their own accord). However, it has been proven Dragon has an important plot role.

2. Myth: It is the first letter of the civilization name.

Fact: We do not know what the D. means at the moment. This comes from the significant actions of the World Government to stop Clover saying the name.

3. Myth: It is not a D it is part of a smiley! (example: :-D). Also, every D character that appeared in the series has smiled (even Portgas D. Rouge).

Fact: This one stems from the act of smiling upon death.

4. Myth: It is the name of the royal family of the lost civilization or a clan within it.

Fact: We do not know anything about their culture or if they even had a royal family.

5. Myth: D. means "Devil".

Fact: This one is a nod to Devil Fruits. Rosinante did however state that those with the D. are God's natural enemy, which is what a devil is conveyed as.

6. Myth: It means "Damashii".

Fact: This one is linked to the talk of spirits and "will" throughout the series.

7. Myth: It is half a circle.

Fact: This one comes from "One Piece", the speculation is that the D. is half a circle or pattern/symbol. In other words, acquiring Roger's treasure will result in the symbol becoming "One Piece" again.

8. Myth: It means "Danger". One of the Five Elders said so in Post-War Arc!

Fact: One of the elders really said that, but that's due to the translation "D always means danger", meaning that all of the people with D on their name were dangerous people.

9. Myth: It is given to those who can start a new era. Such as Roger starting a new age of pirates, and Blackbeards's betrayal and Ace's capture leading up to the Marineford War.

Fact: Jaguar D. Saul did not have any known significant act in life, besides inspiring Nico Robin to keep moving forward, and Portgas D. Rouge's only known significant act in life was giving birth to Ace.

Roger & Rocks to Luffy & Blackbeard

Myth: Monkey D. Luffy inherited Gol D. Roger's will, while Marshall D. Teach inherited the will of Rocks D. Xebec. This explains why Whitebeard said that Teach was not one of the people Roger was waiting for, and why Teach's current ship is called the Saber of Xebec.

Facts: Everything regarding potential "inherited will" in the Will of D. has yet to be explained or elaborated on, so there is no way of knowing.

Oda's Character references

Myth: Oda based his idea for X character from One Piece to Y character from Z series.

Fact: While some characters like Jango have obvious design origins, others are not so easily compared. If you really want to, you can compare just about every character to someone else out there. Many characters are based on other characters. Without the word of Oda, saying stuff like "Brook looks like Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas" or "Jabra resembles Tao from Dragon Ball" is just speculation.

Incidentally Brook's origins were eventually revealed, proving the speculations on his design origin as true. However, most of these speculations remain unproven. Many of the speculated origins of the characters are taken from purely Western views, which is difficult to know whether or not a Japanese person would have even heard of the acclaimed "Oda Source Material". The other thing to realize is that some references have since become culturally common, like all pirates in Western culture saying "Arrrr!", which few people know originates from Robert Newton's role of Long John Silver in the 1950 film of Treasure Island. However, Oda has proven to be more knowledgeable on other cultures and One Piece contains references to cultures from all over the world. A significant number of his characters show a strong resemblance to musicians from Western media and music, particularly influences drawn from Rock and Heavy metal music|Metal music.

The Devil Fruit eaten by Dragon

Myth: It is obvious by the way he said "Wind Blast" back in Loguetown that Dragon has a wind Devil Fruit. Or maybe, Dragon ate a Devil Fruit that allows him to manipulate the weather. Why do you think a lightning bolt saved Luffy from being killed by Buggy? And what about the rain, when Dragon arrives at Loguetown?

Fact: Dragon did not say "Wind Blast" in the manga, it was added in the anime. The original manga does not give any indication that Dragon had any effect on the weather other than being around when the storm hit. We do not know his power, although it is always a possibility. The speculation was re-invigorated when a rather powerful and convenient wind blast created a path to the ocean and the Revolutionaries during the fire of Gray Terminal, with some fans speculating the two instances were foreshadowing, but again there is no proof that this is correct.

Romantic Relationships

Myth: X character in One Piece is in love with X other character in One Piece.

Fact: When asked if there would be romance in One Piece in a SBS letter, Eiichiro Oda replied "They're all in love... with adventure". Although there are many established married couples in the series, it is uncommon for romance to be depicted during the ongoing story. Exceptions to this include the love stories of Kyros and Scarlett, as well as Senor Pink and Russian, told through flashbacks. Certain relationships have also been addressed by the characters, such as Piiman, Tamanegi and Ninjin mentioning how Usopp is a "lucky man" to have somebody as Kaya, but they are rather minor and no romantic relationship involving the main cast has been officially established in the manga. As such, most references to love come in the form of amorous comments from one character to the other. Kisses and other romantic gestures are also rarely shown, a notable exception being the kiss between Sanji and Pudding, which was hidden from view.

In a 2008 interview conducted at Jump Festa 2009 and published in the VIZ Shonen Jump 2009 December Issue, Oda answered a reader's question regarding Nami's possible love interest: "Hmm, in a romantic sense? I don't think there will be any romances among that crew. Nami probably sees all the good aspects/qualities of those guys, but One Piece isn't a romance. Maybe a lot of girl readers ask this kind of question. Boys are not interested at all. One Piece is basically a shonen manga, manga for boys, so romance isn't depicted."

In 2022, Oda addressed the subject of romance in the "OVER 100 Miracle Talk" interview with Detective Conan author Gosho Aoyama. Oda explained that while he is fine with depicting "one-sided feelings", he is hesitant to draw "bidirectional feelings" as he worries that both of the characters will lose fans.

In a 2023 interview with TVLine, One Piece live-action co-showrunner Steven Maede stated that Oda opposed romantic relationships between the Straw Hat Pirates members: "One of the mandates from [manga creator] Eiichiro Oda was against romance on the crew, [...] That is a hard no, as far as the manga and the live-action show are concerned". However, the live-action series added a kiss scene between Usopp and Kaya, indicating that Oda was not opposed to the Straw Hats having a romance with someone outside the crew.

Corgi and the CP5

Myth: Corgi is a member of CP5, he might even be the leader!

Fact: The speculation comes from the fact that Corgi was trying to get the blueprints of Pluton from Iceburg, exactly what Spandam was doing with Tom when he was in charge of the CP5. But Corgi was never labeled as a leader of CP5 but was labeled as representative of the Government. However until Oda says something about it in a SBS or it is stated by a character, it is merely a speculation.

They Will Join!

Myth: That character would be great on the Straw Hat Pirates, they must join!

Fact: With every new arc that is released comes the hunt for Luffy to add more members to his crew. Many fans will speculate as to who will join and when. Mostly, this comes from Luffy's early recruitment during the East Blue Saga when he recruits a member almost every arc. When Luffy reached the Grand Line, this recruitment process slowed down and instead of most arcs leading to a member, a new member has joined every three or four arcs. The fact is that until someone is made an official member of the crew, it is always speculation.

Progression of Time

Myth: It has been a year since the story began.

Fact: There is no confirmation on how long the storyline has taken. Few clues aid the fans at all.

From witnessing the story play out;

1. Luffy's first few adventures in the East Blue happened within a few weeks. The only times night was witnessed however were during the Syrup Village Arc and at the end of the Arlong Park Arc. They therefore spent at least one day at Usopp's village.
2. Luffy worked for two days in Baratie before the arrival of Don Krieg's Pirate Armada.
3. They spent several days partying in Nami's village after it was freed from Arlong.
4. No night scenes were witnessed during Loguetown, so it is presumed that Loguetown was a quick stop for them due to the conflict with Smoker.
5. Whisky Peak was at least one night, they were there less than a day.
6. They were at Little Garden for only a day (no night scenes were witnessed).
7. From Little Garden to Drum Island it was less than five days (Nami would have died from her illness of Kestia if it had been any longer).
8. There was a night scene at Drum Island, but they were there no more than two or so days.
9. They met Ace within ten days of him visiting Drum Island because he had left Drum Island only a week beforehand and he was still in Arabasta when they arrived. He was only going to wait ten days for Luffy.
   1. Also, Ace showed Newgate his brother's bounty, which could have only happened before he began seeking for Teach. Therefore, since Ace visited Drum Island one week before Luffy, at least that time (plus the eventual time Ace needed to reach Drum from Moby Dick) passed from Luffy's first bounty to them visiting Drum Island.
10. In all, they spent less than a week or so in Arabasta before moving on.
11. They were in Jaya less than four days, the time taken before their Log Pose would have adjusted, however they left close to its change.
12. A close examination of Skypiea will show that it lasted two days (Entering the white sea to the campfire in Upper Yard was one day, and then the Survival Game to waking up the next morning after the party was another).
13. No night scenes were seen in the Davy Back Fight matches. It is presumed the events took place in less than a day.
14. They stayed in Long Ring Long Land for 4 days after Aokiji's attack to let Luffy and Robin rest.
15. They traveled for another 3 days before coming across Yokozuna.
16. Including the events of Enies Lobby, the crew had stopped at Water 7 for a week.
17. Thriller Bark was less than a day, a day max.
18. There was a week between leaving Thriller Bark and arriving at the Red Line.
19. They were in Sabaody Archipelago for less than a day.
20. A full two days had visibly passed over the time Luffy was on his way to Amazon Lily.
21. Four and a half days had passed during the journey from Amazon Lily to Impel Down via Marine ship.
22. At least 30 hours passed while Luffy was in Impel Down.
23. Three weeks passed from the end of the Summit War at Marineford to Luffy ringing the Ox Bell.
24. Two years passed during the timeskip.
25. They travelled straight to Fish-Man Island in what was depicted as less than a few hours after reuniting, and stayed there for less than a day, a day max.
26. They travelled straight from Fish-Man Island to Punk Hazard in what was depicted as less than a few hours.
27. They spent less than a day on Punk Hazard before leaving for Dressrosa.
28. They spent four days on Dressrosa before leaving for Zou.
29. A week passed before they reached Zou.
30. They spent a day on Zou before Luffy's group went to Whole Cake Island and the others went to Wano Country.
31. Luffy's group took an undetermined number of days to get to Totto Land. A full moon cycle occurred between when they were on Zou and the fourth day they were in Totto Land, so the voyage likely took slightly over three weeks.
32. They spent four days in Totto Land. It took one day to get from Cacao Island to Whole Cake Island, they were in Whole Cake Island for two and a half days, and it took half a day to get from Whole Cake Island to the outside of Totto Land.
33. Given that another full moon cycle occurred between the time spent in Totto Land and the Raid on Onigashima, Luffy's group likely took around two weeks to sail to Wano Country.
34. They spent about three weeks and two days in Wano Country, with two weeks elapsing between their arrival and the Raid on Onigashima, the raid occurring in the course of one night, and eight days passing for the Straw Hats to recover and depart.
35. If the destruction of the Lulusia Kingdom occurred on the same day the Straw Hats left Wano, then it took them five days to reach Egghead.
36. They left Egghead the day after they arrived.

All in all, the storyline works out to show that the story has been going on for around two years, four months. When you add up all the days that the storyline roughs out for you it works out the Straw Hats have been sailing for at least three to six months, although it is likely much higher than this due to the fact time spent traveling between islands is indeterminable. In particular note to this indeterminable time period, Ace began to hunt Blackbeard when Luffy's first wanted poster came out, yet Blackbeard had already left Whitebeard 2–3 months prior to the Straw Hats arriving later at Drum Island. This means either Ace did not hunt Blackbeard straight away, or the Straw Hat crew took a number of days between their adventures before arriving at either any or all of these locations - Loguetown, Reverse Mountain and Whisky Peak. There is simply no room for the 2–3 months in any other established time period.

Some argue that the Rumbar Pirates claimed it would take them a couple of years to travel around the world and Luffy's crew must have passed at least one year already. From Rayleigh we learn Roger had entered the Grand Line three years before his death and disbanded his crew a year before his death. This means it took him two years to complete his journey which gives us a little bit of judgment to base the Straw Hats journey on even if a small one. In One Piece, Oda has depicted the moon several times, it has been discovered the moon's phases progress with the storyline's own timeline and therefore it can be used as a judge for the number of days that have passed on their journey. However from the first sighting in the Syrup Village Arc (waxing crescent) to the start of the Amazon Lily Arc (waning crescent) would work out to be only 21 days by this guide. Although due to certain conditions on one of the phases seen, it could be as much as 42 days.

An argument against the timespan is that Koby has aged greatly, however Oda answered this. According to Oda, Koby just went through a growth spurt and tightened his muscles with discipline (due to Garp's training).

During Shanks' arrival at the Marineford War, Lucky Roux stated that Shanks had not seen Luffy for 10 years. As Luffy set off on his adventure 10 years after Shanks left, and that they have not seen each other since, it can be presumed that it has been less than a year since Luffy's adventure began.

The final hint of age is the notion Oda once stated that One Piece timeline is independent of our own real world time line. In confirming this, Oda also revealed in the Strong World movie artbook that Luffy from Strong World to the Marineford Arc was 17 "And as far as something that will hold true for both the manga and the anime, this will be Luffy's last adventure as a 17 year-old", meaning One Piece's first half has taken place in at most less than a year since we do not know the exact date when Luffy left on his journey. This is however the only solid information to date on the timeline for One Piece there is.

Aging of Characters

In a similar vein as time progression speculation, fans have speculated as to whether or not characters' birthdays have occurred during the story and can pinpoint parts of a story where the character should have increased in age even when that particular moment gives no mention to their birthday having occurred. This includes such observations as:

• Assuming Luffy began his pirating journey on his birthday, May 5th, and given, based on the above observations, that the time between that and the start of the timeskip was likely greater than two months, it should be the case that Nami, whose birthday is on July 3rd, should have turned 19 prior to the timeskip.
• Luffy lands on Wano Country on Tama's 8th birthday, which is March 3rd. Sanji's birthday is March 2nd, so Sanji should have turned 22 the day prior, as well as his brothers. Additionally, since two weeks passed between Luffy's arrival and the Raid on Onigashima, then Franky, whose birthday is on March 9, should have turned 37.
• The birthday of Hera is March 17th, placing that as the date of the Raid on Onigashima. This is consistent with two weeks having passed since Tama's birthday.

However, these two cases are contradicted by other material, thus making it clear that tracing calendar dates and birthdays in the story is simply not reliable:

• SBS Volume 69 confirms that Nami is 20 following the timeskip, meaning she was 18 during all of her time on the Straw Hats prior to this. Indeed, all of the Straw Hats' ages are two years more than the ages that were given prior to the timeskip, meaning that none of them celebrated a birthday between joining the crew and the timeskip.
• In Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary, Sanji's Wano card entries with his aliases "San-gorou" and "Osoba-mask" as well as his Egghead-updated entry, still list his age as 21. Franky's card entries for Wano and Egghead still list his age as 36.

Given these instances, among others, the fact of the matter is that Oda has never really bothered to maintain a strict continuity in regards to calendar dates, and thus it is impossible for us to extrapolate concrete observations as to how much time has passed and whether any birthdays should have occurred during the observed time period. The only time this can happen is if:

• The time that has passed is confirmed to have been at least a year, such as the two-year timeskip.
• It is explicitly stated in the manga that a character's birthday has occurred, such as with Big Mom during her flashback and Tama in the Wano Country Arc.

Jinbe and the Monster Trio

Myth: Jinbe has joined the "Monster Trio" of Straw Hats (alongside Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji) and is on the same tier as at least Zoro and Sanji.

Fact: The "Monster Trio" is a concept that exists in the series, with Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji having explicitly been referred to as the strongest Straw Hats multiple times by other characters. Although Jinbe possesses numerous impressive titles and accomplishments and it is generally universally agreed that he is powerful, the issue here is that characters have yet to note him as being among the Straw Hats' elite. This wiki purely gleans character information from what is explicitly noted in-universe, rather than fan observations which, when of this nature, come off more as subjective and speculative. As a comparison, it would be silly for this wiki to note which of the Seven Warlords of the Sea were the strongest purely based on our observation of their feats; we would obviously need an official source to note such a distinction. Thus, without any official acknowledgement of Jinbe being in the strongest tier of Straw Hats, to note that here would be only based on fans' headcanon. It should also be noted that, after Jinbe joined the Straw Hats, Zoro and Sanji still received a special level of attention in regards to their role in the crew with them being referred to as the "wings" of Luffy.

Nola's Gender

Myth: Nola, the giant snake from Skypiea, is stated to be a female.

Fact: No official source, be it manga or otherwise, is known to have given Nola a sex. This speculation has been spread among the fan community for nearly two decades since the Skypiea Arc was released; it appears a key reason why Nola was believed to be female was due to its feminine-sounding name among other things. However, it should be noted that its name is based off of Mont Blanc Noland, who is a man. Ultimately, there is no clear way to know or tell Nola's sex.

Moria's Scar

Moria's face is split down the middle, with the split containing "X"s.

1. Myth: Moria's scar comes from his fight with Kaidou.

Fact: The origins of Moria's scar have not been revealed. Those scars have existed for at least 20 years though as shown in Chapter 0 (and appears to have grown over the years). Though it appears on the skin, it is also unconfirmed to be a scar, since almost all other scars seen with stitches in the series have normal "-" across them. For a surgeon, an "x" scar would make the skin close incorrectly on the wound, disputing the pressure on the closed wound incorrectly. This is why surgeons always do a straight stitch across as it pulls the flesh together equally.

2. Myth: That's not a scar! He is wearing a mask!

Fact: Noteworthy enough, the "scar" has lengthened over the years. But even before Chapter 0 was released, this theory cropped up on his face being a mask or based on a mask. To date, this is also unknown and one can presume as far as the readers are concerned that it is his true face. Early concept arts of Moria have shown him to be wearing a mask. However, the mask theory is debunked when it is revealed in SBS Volume 64 where Oda draw the Warlords as children, Moria's face was in fact the same in his childhood, though a bit skinnier. He also does not seem to gain his scar and stitches on his face yet.

Zoro's new Sword

Myth: Zoro will own all three of the cursed swords Shodai Kitetsu, Nidai Kitetsu and Sandai Kitetsu.

Fact: Much in the same way the Seastone Sword theory sprung out of Zoro losing Yubashiri, likewise did this. Generally, it was not thought that Zoro would ever lose one of his swords. It became another popular theory that one day Zoro would obtain all three generations of the Kitetsu swords. This is most due to the fact their names were already known to the fans prior to Shusui being shown in the storyline and many wanted Zoro to use all three cursed swords as testament to his power. One problem with this myth is that in order to have Zoro have all three Kitetsu swords, all of his would have to be broken/lost etc. That would mean Wadō Ichimonji, Zoro's most prized sword would have to get destroyed, unless of course that they were all owned at different times.

A variant on this myth is that Zoro will ultimately swap to the other Kitetsu swords in series after losing his Sandai Kitetsu, but there is no more evidence for this than there is for the original theory.

Fact: Nidai Kitetsu was shown in the Wano Country Arc as the property of Kouzuki Sukiyaki and was borrowed briefly by Luffy; however, Zoro was never interested in taking it and would obtain a different Meito, Enma, thus making it even more unlikely he would acquire all the Kitetsu swords.

The Four Emperors and the Sacred Beasts

Myth: There are four Emperors like the four sacred beasts of Japan (Vermillion/Red Bird, Azure/Blue Dragon, White Tiger, Black Tortoise). Shanks and Whitebeard already match two of the colors (Red and White), I bet the last two Emperors have nicknames that match the colors (Blue/Azure and Black)!

Fact: Unconfirmed. Most other anime that share One Piece's genre will generally have some reference to the four sacred beast in them somewhere so anime fans in general are always expecting them. For now however, it can only be regarded as speculation, although Oda has referenced other Japanese folklore already in One Piece as seen with the Marine admirals. While Kaidou's Devil Fruit is the Azure Dragon and Shanks, Whitebeard and Blackbeard are associated with red, white and black, they were not all emperors at the same time and no other emperor is clearly associated with one of these colors. In addition, there are now seven known people who have had the title Emperor, since Blackbeard took the title after Whitebeard's death. Although Blackbeard might correspond to the black tortoise, that would leave three Emperors without a corresponding sacred beast.

After the Wano Country Arc, the images of the new four emperors (Shanks, Teach, Buggy, and Luffy) shows the characters with a matching hair colors (red, black, blue, and white, respectively), though this is only applicable when Luffy is in his Gear 5 form, and no connection to the sacred beasts have even been hinted.

Devil Fruit Names

Myth: The names of the unnamed Devil Fruits must be...

Some of the fan guesses for the names have been:

• Urouge: Muki Muki no Mi (Mukimuki the onomatopoeia for very buffed), Moko Moko no Mi (muscle sound and Urouge's power sound in the manga) or Karu Karu no Mi (Karuma meaning Karma)
• Minotaurus: Ushi Ushi no Mi or Ushi Ushi no Mi Model: Bull (Ushi means Cow / Cattle / Bovine)
• Minozebra: Uma Uma no Mi Model: Zebra (Uma means Horse) or Roba Roba no Mi Model: Zebra (Roba means Donkey)
• Minokoala: Kuma Kuma no Mi Model: Koala (Kuma means bear, a reference to the term "koala bear") or Maru Maru no mi Model: Koala (Marusupial meaning "Marsupial")
• Minorhinoceros: Rino Rino no Mi, Sai Sai no Mi (Sai means rhinoceros) or Uma Uma no Mi Model: Rhinoceros (rhinoceros are odd-toed ungulates which include horses)
• Laffitte: Tori Tori no Mi Model: Swallow / Owl (Tori means bird) or Tobu Tobu no Mi (Tobu means fly)
• Dalmatian: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dalmatian (Inu means dog)
• Onigumo: Kumo Kumo no Mi, Model: Tarantula or Kumo Kumo no Mi (Kumo means spider)
• Epoida: Mushi Mushi no Mi, Model: Caterpillar (Mushi means bug)
• Minochihuahua: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Chihuahua
• Jaygarcia Saturn: Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Gyuki
• Marcus Mars: Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Itsumade
• Topman Warcury: Buta Buta no Mi, Model: Hoki (Buta means pig)
• Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro: Uma Uma no Mi, Model: Bakotsu
• Shepherd Ju Peter: Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Sandworm or Wamu Wamu no Mi, Model: Sandworm (Wamu comes from the Japanese pronunciation of worm)

Filler Devil Fruits

• Chiqicheetah: Neko Neko no Mi Model: Cheetah
• Alpacacino: Kuda Kuda no Mi Model: Alpaca (Kuda comes from rakuda, meaning camel)
• All-Hunt Grount: Saru Saru no Mi Model: Thunder Back Gorilla or Ude Ude no Mi (Ude meaning arm)

Haki Users

Myth: Future Possible Haki Users:

• Roronoa Zoro: His Asura technique and his ability to cut through steel could indicate something more than brute strength.
• Sanji: Sanji's Diable Jambe might be a form of Haki.
• Usopp: Usopp's "ability" to negate Perona's Negative Hollow powers, can be an unconscious form of Haki.

Fact: Whether the characters abilities stems from Haki or simply skill (or Devil Fruit where appropriate) is yet to be confirmed. It is confirmed that Sanji's Diable Jambe is produced using friction, although the fact that he is not burned by this himself has yet to be fully explained. Zoro's Asura is described by Kaku as a mental projection, although the meaning of this is unclear. Just before Zoro sliced through Mr. 1, he apparently heard "heartbeats" coming from everything, which bears a remarkable similarity to Koby's description of his Haki ability. However no connection is yet confirmed. While Usopp's Negative Hollow immunity has only been explained by his claims of being "already negative", it should be noted that Luffy, while confirmed to have the capacity for Haki and known to occasionally use it unconsciously, was still affected by the negative hollow.

Fact: It has been confirmed that Luffy, Zoro and Sanji were well trained in the use of Kenbunshoku and Armament Haki during the timeskip. However, there is no more evidence for a connection between Haki and their unusual techniques. While Zoro can use Haoshoku Haki, no other user has made a full "mental projection" like Asura and it still took him many arcs to awaken Haoshoku consciously even after he learned the other kinds of Haki.

Fact: Usopp was shown to have acquired Kenbunshoku Haki during the Dressrosa Arc.

Fact : Zoro was shown to have Armament Haki during his fight with Pica in Chapter 778, when he coated all his swords black.

Blackbeard's Two Devil Fruits

Myth: Blackbeard has a parasitic twin in his belly.

Fact: The reason Marco mentioned an "unusual body type" when speculating how Blackbeard was able to handle two Devil Fruits has yet to be explained.

Myth: A person can control only one Devil Fruit of each type, but are not limited to the number.

Fact: It was not clearly explained by Blueno when he said one's body would destroy itself when one consumes two Devil Fruits. Due to the reactions of the pirates and Marines to Blackbeard's power usage, this has been proven to be untrue.

Myth: Blackbeard will eventually consume a third Devil Fruit of the Zoan type since there are three types of fruits and three skulls on his flag.

Fact: While Blackbeard's body allows him to control two Devil Fruits, the possibility of him controlling a third has yet to be confirmed since we do not even know why he can control two. It is stated that his crew is now tracking down powerful Devil Fruit users and stealing their abilities, but exactly how the stolen Devil Fruits are used is unrevealed.

Myth: Blackbeard has eaten the "Mythical Zoan Type: Cerberus" Devil Fruit, and because a Cerberus is a dog with three heads he's able to consume two more Devil Fruits. The Cerberus also explains the three skulls in Blackbeard's jolly roger, why Blackbeard carries three pistols, also how Shanks' scar, which was given to him by Blackbeard, has three scratches on it, and why Zoro and Luffy referred to Blackbeard as "they" instead of "he" during the Jaya Arc.

Fact: It is unknown if a Cerberus fruit exists, and while there may be a theme with the number 3 it is unclear what it means. Zoro and Luffy may have realized Blackbeard had allies on Jaya or that some of the people they saw were his crew. It is highly unlikely either Zoro or Luffy could have realized Blackbeard had such an ability, given that he shows no outward signs of any powers, like any other Devil Fruit user.

How the Blackbeard Pirates obtain fruit powers

Myth: The Yami Yami no Mi allows Blackbeard to gain other fruit powers by absorbing them.

Fact: So far there is no indication this is the case, as the Yami Yami no Mi has only been stated to nullify Devil Fruit abilities and not steal them. This was shown against Ace, who survived and retained his abilities after breaking free of Blackbeard's hold on him. How Blackbeard was able to acquire Whitebeard's powers remains a mystery, especially given he performed this acquisition after Whitebeard had died (the scene with Smiley's death shows that Devil Fruits should regenerate immediately after their user's death).

Myth: Blackbeard ate part of Whitebeard's body to gain his fruit power.

Fact: This speculation arose after Big Mom was speculated to have eaten Mother Carmel in her youth and gained Carmel's fruit powers in the process, giving rise to the speculation that fruits can be transmitted by eating the previous user. As noted in the relevant section below, Oda was asked a similar question regarding Luffy long ago and did not necessarily deny the possibility. This belief regarding Blackbeard and Whitebeard is not always a serious one in the community, but regardless, Whitebeard's body was noted to look completely unchanged after Blackbeard gained his power, and as noted right above, Whitebeard had already died by the time Blackbeard began the process of taking his power.

Myth: The Blackbeard Pirates, in their quest for powerful Devil Fruit abilities, are able to directly transmit the power from the victim's body to their own.

Fact: This is possible, but not confirmed as some may believe. A lot of this is tied to Blackbeard's mysterious ritual that allowed him to obtain Whitebeard's fruit power, with many believing that it occurred without Blackbeard needing to eat from a fruit. Additionally, Jinbe in Chapter 650 seemed to have no idea how the crew could obtain abilities like that, indicating the process is not a simple one. However, the fact remains that simply possessing ordinary fruits and relying on fruit regeneration is a very obvious possibility that has yet to be discounted in-story, and assuming that the Blackbeard Pirates are using a different process is jumping to conclusions.

Armament Haki before and after the timeskip

Due to the portrayal of Armament Haki changing between pre and post-timeskip, having once been consistently invisible and now frequently visible via the Hardening technique, speculations have abounded as to the reason for this discrepancy. So far, an official reason has yet to be given for any aspect of this.

Myth: One can use Armament Haki without hardening their body.

Fact: This is true, as there are confirmed uses of Armament Haki post-timeskip that do not involve visible hardening, such as Sentomaru's "Ashigara Dokkoi" technique, a confirmed use of Armament emission, and Boo breaking his Armament-imbued axe while striking Bobby Funk. Other instances include Luffy grasping the true body of Logia users Smoker and Caesar Clown, although these are less clear in the manga due to the dark coloring of Luffy's clothes.

Myth: Armament Haki was invisible before the timeskip because Luffy had not awakened it yet. We did not see Hardening because Luffy could not see it.

Fact: This belief has yet to be confirmed or denied by any official source.

Crocodile was a woman

Crocodile as a child.

Myth: Ivankov knows a secret from Crocodile's past that nobody else knows, and Ivankov can change people's gender, leading to speculation that Crocodile used to be a woman and had Ivankov change him to a man.

In Chapter 0, we only see the back of Crocodile's head, suggesting that he was different back then and that Oda wants to keep it a secret for now.

Fact: So far, nothing has been confirmed. In the SBS for Volume 63 Oda drew the Warlords as children, and Crocodile appears to be depicted as a boy. Likewise, his Seraphim counterpart appears to be a boy. However, some fans feel that the drawing is ambiguous in gender. Oda has yet to clarify whether or not this rumor is true, nor has he specified what the secret Ivankov knows of truly is.

Luffy is not the Destroyer of Fish-Man Island

Myth: Shyarly only said the Destroyer of Fish-Man Island would be wearing a Straw Hat, not that it is Luffy. Jinbe's going to go get a bunch of Straw Hats for the children of Fish-Man Island. Whoever the Destroyer is will just take one of these hats to taunt the Fish-Men and/or the Straw Hat Pirates. After all, Luffy would never destroy Fish-Man Island! Plus the Straw Hats have left Fish-Man Island, and so far they have not gone back to any previously visited island!

Fact: So far, nothing has been confirmed. While Camie commented that Shyarly's prediction could take up to a year to come to pass, there was no direct evidence that Luffy is indeed the Destroyer. While the Straw Hats have not yet backtracked, with the introduction of the three needle Log Pose, the dangers of the New World, and the Straw Hats' promise to Shirahoshi may mean that the Straw Hats will revisit Fish-Man Island before the end of the story. However, this myth may just be hopeful thinking by fans, and the circumstances under which Fish-Man Island will be destroyed, if it actually is, are unknown. It is also possible Shyarly was wrong and this plot point has already been resolved.

Caesar did not stab Monet's heart

Myth: Caesar Clown did not successfully stab Monet's heart with the stake, as it is shown next to the heart afterwards. This means Monet likely survived his attack.

Fact: This interpretation takes several liberties and assumptions with the scene of Caesar stabbing the heart in the prior chapter and also relies on only one possible explanation for the stake being removed from it later. While the manga leaves it a bit ambiguous whether Caesar stabbed the heart in its center or toward its side (the anime shows him stabbing it right in the center), it is undeniably true that he drew blood from the attack and inflicted injury on Monet's heart, as evidenced by her clutching the part of her chest where her heart was before losing consciousness.

While it was never made clear why the stake was away from the heart later, there are multiple possible explanations including that Caesar removed the stake himself which would have inflicted even greater injury; he did lose consciousness soon after the attack, but was not shown losing it right upon plunging the stake in, as some might claim. Even if the stake naturally "slipped out" of the heart after the stab, that in no way indicates the heart escaped injury. Some fans believe that the stake managed to only stab through the extraneous matter surrounding Monet's heart in the cube storing it, but the idea that Monet would not suffer fatal injury from this is also flawed. It has not been explained if there is any significant extraneous matter surrounding the heart once it is removed; if there is not, then the heart was certainly stabbed. But if there is, then the injury is still lethal, as penetrating the mass around the heart would still result in bleeding to death.

In real life some stab wounds to the heart, especially shallow ones, can close on their own, but will still be lethal if not treated in a short time period. It is not known if Monet's heart was recovered by anyone following Caesar's attack on it. There is no indication that anyone found and treated it, and if so, this makes Monet's death just about certain even if she survived the initial stabbing. During the Dressrosa Arc, Doflamingo treats Monet as though she is dead, saying Law "took care of" her and Vergo (the phrase in Japanese, 手にかけ (tenikake^?), was translated as "attacked" by Viz but typically when referring to people in this context indicates that they were killed).

Crocodile has awakened his Devil Fruit

Myth: Doflamingo's Devil Fruit powers allows him to turn his surroundings into strings when using their awakened form. Crocodile was shown turning his surroundings into sand in a very similar way. This takes to the thought that Devil Fruits which main ability is to alter the user's body can alter the user's surroundings when awakened, and because of that, Crocodile's ability to dehydrate things and turning them to sand is part of his Devil Fruit awakening state. Crocodile himself has commented he had mastered his powers to the highest levels, reinforcing the theory. As even further evidence, Crocodile is the first person that we hear of awakening from, during the Impel Down arc.

Fact: There is no confirmation that Crocodile has an awakened Devil Fruit yet, or if Logia awakenings work the same as Paramecias.

Weevil cut off Z's arm

Myth: Garp stated that the person who cut off Z's arm later was invited to become a Warlord of the Sea during the timeskip, and the most likely candidate for that is Edward Weevil.

Fact: Buggy is unlikely given that he received an invitation to become a Warlord before the timeskip, but it is possible for either Weevil or Law to have done the deed. However, Law actually asked to become a Warlord by sending 100 pirates' hearts to the World Government. Additionally, it was stated that the unknown pirate had a Devil Fruit power, and Weevil has yet to show any such ability. It is also possible that the pirate turned down the invitation, and that Z was upset that he was given an invite at all.

Since Z is non-canon, and Film Z came out before Buggy and Weevil were revealed as Warlords, it is uncertain if any specific Warlord was in mind when Film Z was made.

Big Mom ate Mother Carmel

Myth: In her eating frenzy, a 6-year-old Big Mom accidentally ate Carmel and the other residents of the Sheep's House, and gained Carmel's Soru Soru no Mi this way.

Fact: The reason for Carmel's disappearance has been left unspecified although it is heavily implied that she may have eaten Carmel and the other residents due to various screams in the manga as she was eating, along with scraps of Carmel's and the residents clothing left behind. However, it is only known for sure that Carmel died, given that her Devil Fruit was passed to Big Mom. In an SBS, a fan asked Oda if he could acquire Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi by eating him, and Oda replied that he would get food poisoning, not necessarily denying the possibility of a fruit transfer. An alternative possibility is that when Carmel died, her power reincarnated into a nearby fruit which Big Mom then ate.

Diable Jambe came from Sanji's modifications

Myth: Sanji did in fact receive the modifications that were given to him and his brothers before they were born, but activated them later. Diable Jambe is the result of his modifications.

Fact: In the Wano Country Arc, Sanji was shown to have indeed had his modifications activated due to donning the Raid Suit that his family gave him. However, so far it does not appear that Diable Jambe is the result of this, as Sanji's Raid Suit grants the special power of invisibility; which the character of "Stealth Black" in Sora, Warrior of the Sea (who is based on Sanji's Raid Suit) also possesses as his signature Germa power.

Shodai Kitetsu's Owner

Myth: The Supreme Grade sword Shodai Kitetsu is owned by Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro of the Five Elders.

Fact: This speculation was originally a completely unfounded one, but in Chapter 1117 it was confirmed that Nusjuro does indeed wield a Kitetsu sword; however, the sword being Shodai Kitetsu is not yet confirmed.

Shanks the Father

Myth: Shanks is the father of Makino's baby.

Fact: Oda has given little hint about who fathered Makino's child, only saying it was "that person" in an SBS. Shanks being the father is the most commonly held belief, as Oda's statement indicates that the father is a character fans know, and Shanks is the only man close to Makino's age to have been seen interacting with her.

For this to be true, Shanks would have had to return to Foosha Village during the timeskip. Thus far, there is no indication that he had.

Shanks the Celestial Dragon

Myth: Shanks is a member of the Figarland Family and could even be Figarland Garling's son, making him a descendant of the World Nobles.

Fact: Canonically speaking, there is no information to support this. Shanks being granted an audience with the Five Elders could be considered an indicator, but not a strong or conclusive one as they may have simply opted to speak with him due to his standing as an Emperor.

However, an offhand line in One Piece Film: Red does grant more credence to this theory and is what started the speculation to begin with. When the Five Elders learn that Uta is Shanks' daughter and assess the threat she potentially poses, Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro questions their taking of countermeasures against her if she is "of Figarland blood". Given the context of the line, it just about certainly indicates that Shanks is a member of this family.

This revelation comes with the caveat that this wiki does not consider Film Red to be canon due to the inability to place its story within the manga timeline, and thus this line is considered non-canon as well. With that said, facts originating from movies have been canonized later on by the manga, with a major example being the spelling of the name Laugh Tale which first appeared in One Piece: Stampede before being revealed a few months later in the manga. So it is very possible that Shanks having Figarland blood could eventually be revealed in the manga, but until then we cannot consider it canon.

It is also worth noting that according to Oda in the tie-in Volume 4000000000, Shanks was found on God Valley as an infant by the Roger Pirates during the eponymous incident which Garling was a major player in. However, regardless of how you view the line in Film Red, aside from the interesting God Valley coincidence there is no indication anywhere that Shanks is Garling's son or that they are closely related at all.

Nature of Black Blades

Myth: One can turn their sword into a "Black Blade" like Shusui by imbuing it with Armament Haki to the point where it becomes permanently hardened.

Fact: The exact process for turning a sword into a Black Blade has not been confirmed. Given that the coloration for Shusui and Haki-imbued blades is the same, it has been easy for fans to conclude that Haki is what creates Black Blades, but it should not be treated as fact just from this observation alone. It should be noted that even though Shusui has been noted as a Black Blade and has had its color since the Thriller Bark Arc, instances of Armament Haki hardening did not appear until after the timeskip even though Armament Haki was used in the arcs leading up to it.

Fact: As hinted by Kouzuki Sukiyaki in Chapter 955, and by Oda in the second volume of Road To Laugh Tale, it is confirmed that Armament Haki plays a part in turning a sword into a black blade, but the process is not explained, nor is it confirmed to be the only requirement.

Kaidou, Yamato, and the Oni Race

Myth: Kaidou and Yamato are part of a separate race called oni (鬼（おに）^?) (called "ogres" in the Viz translation).

Fact: This is certainly possible, but there has yet to be real concrete confirmation that an oni race definitely exists. The suffix -zoku (族) that often appears when races & tribes are referred to has not been used with oni. The main source of speculation on the oni race comes from a line spoken in Chapter 1025, where Kaidou tells his son Yamato that he is the "child of oni"; additionally, Yamato was also referred to as the "Oni Princess" in his youth. The full significance of this has not been elaborated on further, and so while it is certainly possible that an oni race exists, the lack of corroborating material means that at the moment, we do not wish to leap to conclusions.

It is worth noting that Portgas D. Ace was also referred to as a "Child of Oni" in his youth (which the official translation translated to "demons"), which makes the term more uncertain. No person with traits matching Kaidou and Yamato has been seen in Totto Land either, though this could be for many reasons including the oni, if they do exist, being one of the three races to not reside in Totto Land.

Imu and the Five Elders' Powers

Myth: Imu and the Five Elders do not have Devil Fruit powers; their transformations are something more natural or connected to more primordial powers possessed by Imu. Imu possesses powers relating to the sea and/or the original "devil" that created the Devil Fruits.

Fact: While the Elders and Imu have not been explicitly confirmed to have eaten fruits, right now there is no concrete reason to believe their transformations stem from something else. Beliefs otherwise have tended to stem from fan theories which currently possess little to no basis in fact. Imu being connected to the creation of the Devil Fruits is, at the moment, pure fan speculation somewhat centered around a tenuous similarity between the name Imu and "Umi", the Japanese word for sea. The only thing shown in the story so far that could lend credence to Imu having devil-related powers is their summoning of arrow-shaped tendrils resembling a stereotypical devil's tail.

Speculators have also based these theories on a couple minor discrepancies when it comes to the portrayal of these powers, although none have directly casted real doubt on their transformations being Devil Fruit-related:

• The Elders do possess other supernatural abilities seemingly unconnected to their transformations, such as teleportation via Magic Circle and immortality. In the case of the latter, there is indication that it is connected to Imu as they were capable of revoking Saturn's immorality. However, this is the full extent of Imu's involvement in the Elders' powers that has been shown so far. It is made clear in Saturn's flashback before he dies that despite these telepathic connections the Elders and Imu have with each other, the Elders are still their own people who can operate independently; they have their own Haki and individual transformations that as of now possess no significant abnormalities and are not indicated in any way to come from Imu.
• When the Five Elders' transformations are all revealed, the infoboxes simply refer to the transformations by the names of the creatures rather than Devil Fruits. Some fans have leaned on this as evidence that the transformations are innate to the Elders rather than coming from a fruit, but this is a major conclusion for such a minor and vague indicator, especially given that Oda can sometimes take a long time between showing the fruit's powers and actually naming the fruit.
• Some fans have pointed to the scene where Warcury jumps toward the Giant Warrior Pirates' ship in his transformed state as an indicator that the Elders can swim, but unless we actually see one of them swimming it simply cannot be considered a serious indicator and it is pointless to speculate as to what Warcury was intending to do, especially given he very well could have just landed on the ship.
• Even if we were to indulge in the unsubstantiated theory that Imu is connected to the supposed "Sea Devil" and has bestowed powers to the Elders without the need for fruits, the fact still remains that in this scenario, the type of powers would still, in essence, be of the same nature as those obtained by simply consuming a fruit.

Additionally, there have been strong physical indicators that the Elders possess Zoan fruits: namely, the appearance of a ring of black flames around the transformed Elders that was previously clearly established as an indicator of an awakened Zoan transformation. Additionally, Jaygarcia Saturn has displayed two different forms that closely resemble the standard Human-Beast and Beast transformation. Vegapunk also noted that Saturn's abilities must be Devil Fruit powers if they were not science.

This sort of Devil Fruit speculation is not anything new in the community as creative fans have imagined potential subversive applications of Devil Fruits, with some previous speculations being that Fujitora's Devil Fruit was consumed by his sword, or that Kaidou is actually a dragon who ate a human/oni Devil Fruit; both theories have since been disproven. While these sorts of theories can be fun to bandy around, giving undue weight to the possibility of them happening is counterproductive to wiki operation. Unless real indicators otherwise are eventually shown, we will treat the Five Elders' transformations as Zoan abilities the same way we treat any character shown transforming into an animal, as Zoan abilities have proven to be the explanation just about every time.

Queen is Franky's Father

Myth: Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary revealed that Queen is Franky's father.

Fact: It did not reveal this, rather fans have noted a strong possibility based on the dates in Queen's card timeline. Said timeline states that Queen had a child 36 years ago—three years after leaving MADS—and abandoned them 26 years ago to join Kaidou. This fits perfectly with Franky's timeline in the manga, as his pirate parents abandoned him at the age of ten 26 years ago. However, until this potential connection is actually confirmed it is nothing more than speculation, albeit an intriguing one.

Resolved

Jack is part fish-man

Myth: Jack's sharp teeth and his ability to survive underwater means he must have fish-man heritage, which would allow him to breathe underwater.

Fact: Jack was confirmed to be a giant grouper fish-man in Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary.

Gate of Justice and Marineford

Myth: One has to pass through the Gates of Justice to reach Marineford.

Fact: One has to pass through the Gates of Justice to reach Marineford only if they are coming via the Tarai Current. The misinterpretation comes from the fact that Luffy and the Impel Down escapees came this way and that the gates opened mysteriously at almost the same time that the Whitebeard Pirates appear. However the Whitebeard Pirates had reached Marineford by coming directly from Fish-Man Island using coated ships.

Tashigi and Kuina

1. Myth: They are twins!

Fact: Kuina is seen as a baby and as an only child in Chapter 0.

2. Myth: They are the same character.

Fact: Kuina's body after her death and her grave are seen in the story. Also, Tashigi was drawn as a child in an SBS, and her appearance was very different from Kuina's. Additionally, Kuina would have been 22 in the present day while Tashigi is 23. They also have different birthdays (Kuina: September 17th), (Tashigi: October 6th).

In an interview published in the VIZ Shonen Jump 2009 December Issue, Oda stated that there was no hidden connection between Tashigi and Kuina: "It's just a coincidence. There's no backstory like Tashigi turns out to be Kuina's sister or something...[Laughs]".

Nami has Haki

Myth: Nami can hurt Luffy, she must have Armament Haki.

Fact: Despite being one of the weakest members of the Straw Hats in overall physical strength (the other being Usopp), she still manages to hurt Luffy, who is made of rubber and should be unharmed by physical attacks. Oda explains this is because she "beats up Luffy's spirit", which is basically the purpose of Haki. However, while it is possible Nami may learn Haki eventually, her ability to injure Luffy is a common gag and should not be taken as a serious display of any abilities she may or may not possess. Also, every time a Straw Hat pirate (with the possible exception of Robin as she had no reason to do so or was never seen doing so) hits Luffy in this manner he displays a bruise briefly afterward, including Usopp, who could not harm Luffy with blunt attacks during their more serious duel in Water 7. When characters before the timeskip hurt Luffy with Armament Haki, he and others take it much more seriously than these gag attacks and wonder how it is possible.

Possible Haki Users

Myth: 1. Possible Haki Users:

• Dracule Mihawk: He is the strongest swordsman of the world, was able to draw blood from Mr. 1, was the rival of Shanks, and Zoro showed no aptitude for Haki until after his training with Mihawk (Shanks and Vista -both respected by Mihawk- both have used some kind of Haki).
• Emporio Ivankov: Okama queen with the ability to launch attacks by winking.
• Jinbe: He has in the past been able to fight Portgas D. Ace, who has a Logia Devil Fruit (though this could be Jinbe's fish-man karate affecting the water in Ace's body) and was able to redirect an attack from an admiral with his bare hands.

Fact: It was stated in Chapter 594 by Dr. Fishbonen that all vice admirals and above have the ability to use Haki. He also told Koby that he is using a form of Haki which is also known as Kenbunshoku Haki or Mantra. In SBS Volume 56 Oda stated that Ivankov's Death Wink is a blast created when he winks and not some kind of Haki.

Fact: It was revealed in Chapter 779 that Mihawk indeed possesses Armament Haki, considering it an important tool against damaging your blade, and taught it to Zoro during the timeskip.

Fact: Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary confirmed Jinbe as a Kenbunshoku and Armament Haki user. He was seen using the latter during the Whole Cake Island Arc.

Pedro is alive

Myth: Pedro survived his sacrificial explosion, given that other characters have survived explosions before.

Fact: Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary confirmed that Pedro died in a revision of his card.

Fate of Saul

Myth: Saul is still alive, Kuzan's move did not kill him!

Fact: While it appears Saul died at Ohara Island, there are arguments that may prove otherwise. The simple fact that he and Aokiji were good friends may show that Aokiji was reluctant to kill him. Amongst the noted signs, is the name of the move used by Aokiji 'Ice Time Capsule', which alone implies he may still be alive (although it could just mean that the move is "Ice Time", only focused on a smaller area). However it is yet to be proven he is alive and for now he is considered dead until proven otherwise. In Episode 278 Spandine was shown talking to Sengoku, where he said "Saul must have let her (Nico Robin) escape before dying!"

There are several giants imprisoned on Level 6 of Impel Down - the 'Eternal Hell' which the public do not know about, and where the World Government incarcerates prisoners it would rather forget about. One of the giants has a large bushy beard and a wide mouth which causes him to resemble Saul, but unless it is later revealed to be him, this can be considered a coincidence.

In Chapter 1066, Saul was confirmed to have survived the Ohara Incident, and he was last seen in Elbaph.

Zoro's Lineage

Myth: Zoro is a descendant of the Shimotsuki Family, or at least has heritage from Wano Country.

Fact: The first hint was given in SBS Volume 96, when Oda briefly teased whether Zoro's lineage may be connected to Shimotsuki Kouzaburou's emigration from Wano to the East Blue. Then, in Chapter 1023, it is stated and shown that Zoro bears a striking resemblance not only to Kouzaburou's relative Shimotsuki Ushimaru, but their legendary ancestor Shimotsuki Ryuma, thus driving further speculation among some that Ushimaru is Zoro's father. It was later directly confirmed in SBS Volume 101 that Ushimaru is not Zoro's father, although Oda did not rule out Zoro having Shimotsuki heritage altogether.

Zoro's Shimotsuki lineage was ultimately confirmed in SBS Volume 105; his paternal grandmother is Shimotsuki Furiko, the older sister of Ushimaru, making Ushimaru his great-uncle; Kouzaburou, Koushirou, and Kuina are thus also relatives of his, but it is not known how closely they are related.

It should be noted for anime-only watchers that the plot point of Zoro going from village to village to challenge their dojos, and Shimotsuki Village being just one of his stops, is not in the canon manga; by all indications, Zoro was a resident of the village and has not been shown or stated to have lived anywhere else during his childhood before setting out to challenge Mihawk.

Kuma's Intention

Myth: Kuma separated the Straw Hat Pirates so they can become stronger.

Fact: In Chapter 591, it was revealed that Kuma wished to save the Straw Hats. Sentomaru also stated that the user of the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi can control where to send people, which was also proven by the fact that Perona was sent to a dark castle like she wanted. The Straw Hats then landed on suspiciously convenient spots (like Zoro ending up on Mihawk's island and Nami on an island dedicated to studying the weather). In Chapter 1099 it is revealed the various islands Kuma sent the Straw Hats (excluding Amazon Lily, Momoiro Island, and Namakura Island) were islands he personally travelled to in search for a cure for Jewelry Bonney's Sapphire Scales and the many residents of said islands Kuma personally met with, like Heracles, Haredas, and Shanba.
