Nazawaka City is a medium-sized city located in the northern East Blue. It is home to the Mihawk Memorial Museum.[1]

Little about the town is known, as it has yet to make a proper appearance.

Layout and Locations[]

Nazawaka City is surrounded by city walls, with an iron grate blocking the main gate overnight.

Mihawk Memorial Museum[]

Mihawk Memorial Museum

The Mihawk Memorial Museum's entryway.

The Mihawk Memorial Museum (ミホーク記念館, Mihōku Kinen-Kan?) is a museum dedicated to Dracule Mihawk. It is Nazawaka City's number one tourist spot, with a popular souvenir shop selling various Mihawk memorabilia including pendants, keychains, mugs, and wooden swords with Mihawk's logo.

The entrance to the Mihawk Memorial Museum is a giant model of Mihawk's face with his mouth open for guests to walk through. A sign, written on the back of Yoru's hilt on the model, says "Welcome! Mihawk Enthusiasts!". Inside the entryway is a small bungalow made of hardened plaster leading to the museum proper.

It has been closed since Matsuba Nazawa's death.

The museum is known to contain a variety of objects that Mihawk has interacted with over his life, including:

  • A toothpick he used while eating takoyaki with Jinbe
  • A feather that was said to have fallen from his hat
  • A spyglass that was said to be used during his travels
  • A shovel that was said to be used when he farmed
  • A red-stained cork
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • A dried rice ball
  • A paper crane that is rumored to always point towards Mihawk, called "Mihawk's Chasing Crane" (ミホークの追鶴, Mihōku no Oizuru?). It was lent to the paper manufacturing workshop, and went missing after it burned down. Zoro and Tsubaki have speculated that it may be a Vivre Card, hence why it always points toward Mihawk.
  • The second button from his shirt

The storage room in the back of the museum contains boxes with the labels "Mihawk's Memories", "Mihawk's Lingering Scent", "Mihawk's Legend", and "Mihawk's Daily Life". They contain more miscellaneous objects, such as an oven mitt he used, an earpick he used, and a nail clipper that he used.[1]

Paper Manufacturing Workshop[]

The paper manufacturing workshop is where the artisans of Nazawaka City make the city's paper to export. Four years ago it burned down, during which village headman Matsuba Nazawa died. During its operation, the workshop produced papers of various colors and varieties; by Tsubaki's estimate, over 30,000 different ones. The different varieties are created by adjusting the shape of the pulp and additives in the paper.

Before it burned down, Tsubaki's parents were working on "Seven-Colored Paper" (七色紙, Nanairogami?) in the workshop, though the documents for its production formula were lost during the fire.[1]

Nazawa Family Estate[]

The Nazawa Family's estate is located in the center of Nazawaka City. The estate's mansion is the only multiple-storied building in the city.

Citizens[]

Culture and Geography[]

Nazawaka City is home to the Naka River (ナカ川, Naka Kawa?), which flows through the city. The residents have created an embankment to stop it from flooding; over the course of many years, 143,000 stones were used in its construction. The stones contain special minerals, and are as hard as iron.

The city's primary industry is paper manufacturing, which is done using the river's water. While production volume is low, Nazawaka City is well-known for its paper's high quality, which is created one sheet at a time by dedicated artisans.

Nazawaka City has a custom of letting the bodies of the deceased flow away in the river, so the town has no graveyard.[1]

Vigilante Corps[]

Nazawaka City's vigilante corps (自警団, jikeidan?) are the city's primary defense force, who work under the village headman. While they were originally founded as hired bodyguards to protect from raiding pirates, they eventually evolved into a private organization under the Nazawa Family's command. Consisting mostly of swordsmen, it counts nearly twenty members.

The vigilante corps' members are generally rough, somewhat violent men, who value strength above all. Other than Umeno Nazawa (and, when he temporarily joined, Roronoa Zoro), they are all former pirates with bounties ranging from one to eight million belly.[1]

History[]

Past[]

At some point in the past, Nazawaka City's vigilantes corps was created to fend off pirates that attacked the city through the Naka River. Under Matsuba Nazawa's governance, it became primarily made up of swordsmen.

Over time, the embankment along the river fell into disrepair, and the residents of Nazawaka City began to worry that it would collapse and the river would flood. During Umeno's childhood, village headman Matsuba took charge of reconstructing it; over the course of years, and using 143,000 stones, the project was completed seven years ago.

Around four years ago, the paper manufacturing workshop in Nazawaka City burned down in the middle of the night, with Matsuba Nazawa inside. While the residents suspected arson, a Marine unit investigated and said it was not.[1]

One Piece novel ZORO[]

Still reeling with the aftermath of the paper manufacturing workshop burning down, the residents of Nazawaka City returned to their daily lives. About a month after Roronoa Zoro came to town and joined the vigilante corps, Umeno Nazawa and Tsubaki discovered that village headman Taketo Nazawa was likely responsible for the burning of the workshop and the murder of the previous headman, and reported his alleged crimes to the nearby Marine base for investigation.[1]
