Oden Two Sword Style is a swordsmanship style developed by Kozuki Oden. It is a variation of Two Sword Style which Oden used while dual-wielding the legendary swords, Enma and Ame no Habakiri.[2]

Overview

Oden Two Sword Style is a Strong Blade style of dual wielding swordsmanship invented by Oden. In addition to incorporating superhuman strength, it places a particular emphasis on advanced Ryuo, providing the user a massive increase in cutting power and strength, elevating their swordsmanship techniques enough that they become able to cut and slash through massive creatures and structures with relative ease and skill.[3] According to Oden, Oden Two Sword Style is the greatest sword style.[4]

Oden wanted to teach his swordsmanship style to his retainers, but they refused. However, during their battle with Kaidou 20 years after Oden's death, in honor of their master, Ashura Doji, Kin'emon, Denjiro, and Inuarashi imitated an Oden Two Sword Style technique.[5] However, Oden Two Sword Style's effectiveness ultimately depends on the user's physical strength and mastery of Busoshoku Haki. Kozuki Oden who was hailed as the as the strongest samurai of his generation was born with unrivalled strength and supreme talent in Busoshoku Haki superior to all other samurais, could cut down the Mountain God at age 18 with a single strike, clash with Whitebeard in his prime, and after his adventures as a pirate which improved his strength and skills, became the first person to not only grievously wound Kaidou, but to give him a massive scar as well. While his retainers Kinemon, Denjiro, Ashura, and a Sulong-enhanced Inuarashi succeeded in performing Oden Two Sword Style's most powerful technique on Kaidou, the injury their combined attack inflicted on Kaidou was shallow due to their individual strength and Busoushoku Haki mastery still being severely inferior to Oden.[6]

Based on Oden's Two Sword Style, some of the Scabbards have even come up with personal single-sword techniques dubbed Oden One Sword Style (おでん一刀流 Oden Ittōryū?).[7]

Techniques

Kozuki Oden

Togen Shirataki.

  • Togen Shirataki (桃源とうげん白滝しらたき Tōgen Shirataki?, literally meaning "Paradise White Waterfall"): Oden hardens both his swords using Ryuo and then delivers a diagonal slash with each one of them at the same time. This technique has immense power and range, as seen when Oden used the technique to bisect the massive Mountain God.[8] When performing it in the anime, Oden not only imbues his swords' blade, but also their hilts and his own arms.[9] Shirataki is a type of Japanese noodles and a popular ingredient in oden, which follows the oden-themed naming scheme of Oden's techniques. In the VIZ Media translation, this is called Paradise Waterfall. In the English localization of One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, it is called Oden Two-Sword Style Paradise Waterfall.
  • Gun Modoki (ガン擬鬼モドキ Gan Modoki?, literally meaning "Gun Imitating Demon"): After hardening his swords using Ryuo, Oden crosses his swords and charges forward, slicing anyone in his path. When Oden used this technique, he was able to defeat several members of the Roger Pirates at once.[10] The attack name is a pun on ganmodoki, Japanese fried tofu fritter made with vegetables and a popular side for oden, in keeping with the naming scheme of Oden's techniques. In the VIZ Media translation, this is called Gun Modoki. In the English localization of One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, it is called Oden Two-Sword Style Gun Modoki.

Togen Totsuka.

  • Togen Totsuka (桃源とうげん十拳とつか Tōgen Totsuka?, literally meaning "Paradise Ten Hands"): Oden's most powerful technique, after hardening his swords using advanced Ryuo, then leaps toward his opponent, and performs an X-shaped slash powerful enough to give the Mythical Zoan enhanced nigh-indestructible Kaidou a massive and permanent scar.[11] "Totsuka" is a reference to the four Totsuka-no-Tsurugi mentioned in Japanese mythology, one of them being Ame no Habakiri. In the VIZ Media translation, this is called Paradise Totsuka. In the English localization of One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, it is called Oden Two-Sword Style Paradise Totsuka.

Non-Canon

  • Shimi Daikon (侍魅しみ大魂だいこん Shimi Daikon?, literally meaning "Great Spirit of Samurai"): Oden imbues his swords with an extra amount of Ryuo, then charges the opponent with the swords crossed behind his own head, then uncrosses them in a single motion, eventually unleashing the Ryuo and cutting into them at once. Each sword wears a long ryuo blade extension as a result of this technique. Oden uses this attack only in the anime, to defeat Ashura Doji. The name is a pun on shimidaikon, daikon cut into slices as ingredients in oden.[12]

Nine Red Scabbards

  • Togen Totsuka (桃源とうげん十拳とつか Tōgen Totsuka?, literally meaning "Paradise Ten Hands"): Kozuki Oden's most powerful technique performed by Ashura Doji, Kin'emon, Denjiro, and Inuarashi. Together they harden their respective swords using their "Ryuo", then leap toward their opponent performing an X-shaped slash. Together they are all able to simultaneously slash the same X-shaped scar given to Kaidou by Oden 20 years ago drawing copious amount of blood.[5] However, Kaidou stated it was significantly less powerful compared to Oden's usage, stating the damage they inflicted was trivial in comparison to Oden, who had successfully inflicted a massive scar on him.[6]

Nekomamushi

  • Oden Ittoryu: Neko Niko Ban (おでん一刀流 猫笑衝突ネコニコバーン Oden Ittōryū: Neko Niko Bān?, literally meaning "Oden One Sword/Blade Style: Cat Laugh Collision"): Nekomamushi strikes with his right arm, causing a piercing shockwave. This was first used to defeat Charlotte Perospero.[7] The name of the technique may be a pun on the expression neko ni koban (猫に小判? "a gold coin to a cat") which is roughly equivalent to "pearls before swine". In the Viz translation, this is called Oden One-Sword Style: Feline Frenzy.

Inuarashi

  • Oden Ittoryu: Inu Spire (おでん一刀流 犬斬威矢イヌスパイヤー Oden Ittōryū: Inu Supaiyā?, literally meaning "Oden One Sword/Blade Style: Dog Slash Power Arrow"): Inuarashi stabs with his sword leg, causing a piercing shockwave. This was first used to defeat Jack.[7] The name of the technique may be a pun on "inspire" (インスパイヤ insupaiya?). In the Viz translation, this is called Oden One-Sword Style: Canine Cleaver.

Trivia

  • According to Wano Country's propaganda, Kurozumi Orochi claimed to have used the Orochi Two Sword Style (オロチ二刀流 Orochi Nitōryū?),[13] to defeat Oden and his retainers. In reality, Orochi never even participated in said battle,[14] and he showed very poor swordsmanship.[15]
  • Being a variation of Two Sword Style which uses two swords, Oden's personal swordsmanship is very similar to Zoro's own Two Sword Style as Hiyori found Zoro's strength and swordsmanship to be similar to her father when the former used his own special variation of Two Sword Style/Three Sword Style to defeat Kamazo, which made Hiyori bequeath one of her father's swords, Enma, to Zoro.
