One Piece Fan Letter is a loose anime adaptation of One Piece novel Straw Hat Stories, released to commemorate the One Piece anime's 25th anniversary.[1]
The special aired on October 20th during One Piece's standard time slot.
Short Summary[]
As the Straw Hat Pirates reunite on the Sabaody Archipelago, various members of the island's population go about their lives, being drawn into the chaos.
Long Summary[]
The Summit War of Marineford rages, as normal Marines try to survive the chaos caused by the more super-powered combatants. These soldiers include two brothers participating in the combat.
On the Sabaody Archipelago, citizens watch as the events of the war unfold, crowding around the large screens displaying it. During the commotion, a young girl sees the Straw Hat Pirates', and specifically Nami's, wanted posters, and becomes enamored with her. Two years later, she sits at her desk surrounded by the wanted posters of the Straw Hat crew, considering Nami to be her idol and trying to copy Nami's style and mannerisms.
Some time later, the girl's mother asks her to make a delivery, but she ditches her instead, intending to give a letter she wrote to Nami.
Meanwhile, several citizens hang around a bar table, telling stories about the Summit War. They argue over who is the strongest swordsman, comparing Dracule Mihawk, Vista, and Roronoa Zoro. Unbeknownst to them, Zoro himself listens in from beside them. At a nearby bookshop, two kids look at a magazine about Franky, and read about the author's attempts to interview Galley-La Company employees. The bookkeeper shoos the kids away, and as she returns to the counter, passes Robin browsing.
The young girl heads to the port, remembering Luffy's "3D2Y" message to the Straw Hats after the war and, through her own (flawed) logic, concludes that they will reunite on the archipelago today. She excitedly runs out, only to discover that the street she chose is crowded due to Soul King's last concert; as she tries to escape the crowd, she and several fans are hit by a passing wave of Perona's ghosts, resulting in her getting depressed.
At the bar, the patrons mock Zoro for his sword style, and Zoro walks out after bashing their heads in the process. In Marine base GR66, the Benevolent King of the Waves instructs the younger Marine brother with delivering an important key that would help in a plan for Sabaody's security. After the soldier leaves, the Benevolent King of the Waves is shown to have a fondness towards Chopper, but hides it as he receives a call from base asking if their secret weapon is ready, he assures them that the activation key is already being delivered.
Back on the archipelago, half an hour has passed. Chopper visits the bookshop, and is amazed at the Franky magazine, while the shopkeeper ponders over what he is. Outside, the young girl frantically runs down the street before nearly crashing into the younger Marine brother, who she is acquainted with. Not wanting him to know she is trying to meet the Straw Hats she hides from him but realizes she dropped her letter and the younger Marine brother mistakes the letter for his own delivery and puts it in his bag. She attempts to follow but bumps into a cruel soldier, scattering her belongings as he steps on her hand. As the girl picks up her belongings, Usopp helps her out and guides her to the bar the younger Marine brother entered, the same one where the citizens were discussing the strongest swordsman.
The discussion has become more chaotic, involving arguments about whether Whitebeard counts as a swordsman and the younger Marine brother having joined in. Sanji stands behind them, and at his mention of "Black Leg", the patrons burst into laughter; he angrily leaves in the same manner as Zoro, not before leaving them with lumps on their heads. Meanwhile, the girl has made her way under the table and found her letter; she initially grabs the Marine passkey, which is in a similar-looking envelope, but is trapped before she can reach her actual letter. The older Marine brother enters the bar and scolds his younger brother for wasting time in a bar, but is interrupted by one of the drunk patrons questioning who he thinks is the strongest. The younger brother jokes that it's probably "Straw Hat" Luffy, and the older brother admonishes the patrons for "supporting pirates". While the younger brother apologizes for his brother's overly serious attitude, the older brother thinks back to the war; he remembers the Devil Fruit users decimating the Marines, and the hopelessness he and the other Marines felt during the chaos. Secretly, he does admire Luffy, as Luffy's motivation to save Ace inspired the older brother to survive the war and save his own brother's life. He considers that his brother is only alive because of Luffy, when they suddenly get notified that the Straw Hat Pirates have been found, and the two brothers rush out of the bar. The girl takes the chance to also run out and make her way to the "Straw Hat Pirates recruitment", only to get stuck on a pole as pirates around her battle the Pacifistas.
In the bookstore, the shopkeeper is revealed to be a Soul King fanatic, and becomes depressed when she learns she missed her chance to see his final concert. Back the battle, the girl and older brother witness Luffy take out PX-5. Later, the two kids rush in to tell her that Brook was spotted at Grove 42. Meanwhile, the little girl tries to escape the chaos, and in Marine Base GR 66, the Benevolent King of the Waves argues with his superior commander that it is not worth using the new weapon due to possible adverse side effects on the environment. The commanding officer will not hear more from it and hung up, leaving Benevolent King so worried for Tony Chopper's safety that he made a mad dash to stop the weapon. The girl suddenly is saved from three pirates by the older Marine brother, who tries to convince her to go home; however, upon learning that the Marines will need to make a 30-minute detour to reach the Straw Hats, she offers an alternative 10-minute path if she can be allowed to join them. The Marine brother disagrees, demanding that she tell him the shorter path and go home, when large bugs from the Boin Archipelago suddenly swarm them, forcing them to run into the empty bookstore. The tavern patrons were almost arrested after being mistaken for pirates, but in the chaos caused by the giant bugs, they lost the bubble containing their magazine and wanted poster collection.
Inside the bookstore, the Marine and the girl argue, as she explains that Nami changed her life; she showed her that you do not need extreme strength or Devil Fruit powers to have adventures, and even a "powerless girl" like her can live freely. Remembering how Luffy changed his own life, the Marine agrees to let the girl see Nami from a distance in exchange for the path, and they exit the bookstore through the back door. Elsewhere, the younger Marine brother gets caught in a crowd in the aftermath of Soul King's concert, as the Straw Hats fly overhead. The girl and the older Marine brother run towards the Straw Hat Pirates' meeting point when one of Perona's ghosts intercepts them, she manages to dodge the ghost while it stuns the Marine and allowing the girl to advance alone. However, she is suddenly grabbed by the same Marine who stepped on her hand earlier, and held as an intruder. She realizes the Marines are attempting to launch a new weapon to destroy the Straw Hats, despairing at Nami possibly dying.
As she cries, she sees the younger Marine brother run past, and remembers the passkey she saw in his bag while in the bar. Suddenly, the bookstore employee and two kids jumps onto the Marine holding the girl down, knocking him over, and she takes the chance to rush the Marines' boat. The bubble containing the patrons' magazine and wanted poster collection busted with one of the Franky magazines fell and lands on the younger Marine's face, allowing the girl to grab her letter from his bag; in a panic, the Marines believe the passkey has been stolen, and begin chasing her around the ship. She manages to avoid them all when the Benevolent King of the Waves suddenly jumps aboard, and she ducks under his legs; when he turns around to catch her, he notices Chopper on the nearby Thousand Sunny and becomes transfixed, blocking the other Marines from pursuing the girl.
Making it to the edge of the boat, the girl rips up her letter as she sees the Straw Hats, including Nami, submerging. She is grabbed by one of the Marines, who accosts her for committing a serious crime while the younger brother tries to defend her, arguing she is just a child. However, she reveals that she ripped her letter, which had been accidentally taken by the younger brother; the Marines realize that the passkey is still in his bag, but is useless now that the Straw Hats have gotten out of range.
Sometime later, the girl apologizes to the two brothers. The Marines' new weapon is scrapped, as the Benevolent King of the Waves' superior yells at him. In the bar, the debating Marines have moved on, now debating about Franky, Buggy, and Shanks. The bookstore employee eats out while kids hang over the cruel Marine.

Anime Notes[]
- The opening narration from We Are! was used during the opening scene.
- The anime changes the following:
- All adapted chapters are moved to take place on the Sabaody Archipelago.
- In Luffy's story, the two Marine soldiers are blood relatives with family on the archipelago. The older brother is changed to be the lower-ranking member, and was involved in attempting to arrest the Fake Straw Hat Crew; the younger brother was involved in the Benevolent King of the Waves' operation.
- In Zoro's story, Sanji and the Marine brothers also meet the men arguing. They only consider Dracule Mihawk, Vista, and Zoro; while Shanks' wanted poster is visible in their discussion during the credits, Ryuma is not brought up at all.
- In Nami's story, the protagonist is changed to a young girl who idolizes Nami for showing that you do not need raw strength to go on adventures. She is connected to the Marine brothers, and helps delay the Benevolent King of the Waves' operation until the Straw Hats escape.
- In Chopper's story, the Benevolent King of the Waves is delayed by the girl idolizing Nami instead of the Kuja Pirates. It is much more ambiguous whether he considers this is a good thing, unlike the novel, where he is unambiguously happy to be delayed. In the anime, the operation consisted of releasing a newly-developed toxic fluid into the water that can dissolve ships and their coating; in the novel, the Benevolent King of the Waves was simply sent on a battleship to intercept the Straw Hats. In the anime, the Benevolent King of the Waves' rank is changed to Lieutenant Commander instead of Captain.
- In Franky's story, Michael and Hoichael are replaced by nameless twin boys. The protagonist is merged with Brook's story, and regrets not being able to make his final concert before learning that it has spread to where the Straw Hats are escaping from. Due to being moved to the Sabaody Archipelago, she does not meet important people from Franky's life like she does in the novel, and the release of all magazines are combined to one day.
- Some scenes have details that were not animated previously:
- During the Summit War of Marineford, when Doflamingo cuts off Little Oars Jr.'s leg, his strings can be seen.
- When the Straw Hats set sail, Nami is lifting her arm in celebration, which matches the manga depiction.
