Punk Records was an area in the Labophase of Egghead which stores the brain of Dr. Vegapunk. It acts as a "library" which Vegapunk and his six satellites can remotely connect to, allowing them to share the same brain.[2] Following the conclusion of the Egghead Incident, it became disconnected from the island and floated away into the sky.[3]
Layout[]
The exterior of Punk Records resembles a broken egg half facing downwards. Inside the egg is a flat black surface with a light grid pattern and the text "PUNK RECORDS" written on it. A ring composed of blocks is floating around the structure.[1] There is a trapdoor access to the interior one tile below the space between the R and E.[4]
The interior of Punk Records contains Vegapunk's oversized and perpetually growing brain, still within his scalp that he cut off years ago, stored inside a liquid tank supported by various machinery.
Functionality[]
Due to the ability of the Nomi Nomi no Mi, Vegapunk's brain has grown so large that it occupies a vast amount of storage space. Vegapunk developed Punk Records into a system which allowed him to separate his brain from his body and connect to it with an antenna capable of transmitting brain waves. In addition, Vegapunk's six satellites are each connected to Punk Records and synchronize their knowledge and experiences with it once a day.[2] Additionally, it is also possible for any Vegapunk to desynch from Punk Records manually, which removes their weakness of being detectable and located by anyone using Punk Records.[5][6]
Vegapunk's plan is to develop Punk Records into something everyone in the world will be able to access, allowing them share all of the knowledge as well as to update Punk Records with new information themselves; presumably, this would circumvent Egghead's constraints on its hosted technologies that prevents such from existing outside of the realm. However, Jinbe voiced some concerns regarding ideologies that could spawn from this for not everyone may have noble intents with the kind of knowledge that could be disseminated in this manner and nor would they all be driven to accrue knowledge for the sake of such as well as betterment.[2] The World Government in particular has enough interest in Punk Records to consider it a valuable resource and a top priority for retrieval should Vegapunk ever rebel.
In spite of Vegapunk and his satellites' simultaneous connection to Punk Records, it is apparently possible for any of them to somehow bypass the synchronizing process in order to avoid sharing information they would have no interest in revealing to others. York proved this by keeping a specific passcode from being uploaded into the Punk Records' database, as said code was meant to ensure the success of her eventual betrayal.
Saturn has implied that the Nomi Nomi no Mi-enhanced brain can still remain functional even after the user is killed, as he prioritized Punk Records to be kept safe should Vegapunk be eliminated, which was later confirmed by York when she talked about Punk Records still operating after Vegapunk died.[7][8]
As a result of Edison's actions involving the Cloud Plant and York's attempt to stop them, Punk Records became disconnected from the Labophase, allowing it to float into the sky and away from Egghead. In this state, it was free to drift aimlessly through the skies due to the artificial clouds holding it up.[3]
Trivia[]
- Vegapunk's plan for Punk Records is similar to the real-world concept of the Internet, or more specifically, a free online encyclopedia like Wikipedia.
- It is also similar to the group mind, a concept in science fiction.
- According to Shaka, it will take around 500 years for humanity to be capable of remotely accessing Punk Records globally, as Vegapunk originally envisioned.
