A bullet isn't needed to pierce the human body.
— Kaku, CP9[1]

Shigan is one of the six techniques of "Rokushiki" that allows one to use their finger as a weapon.

Overview[]

Shigan is a close-quarter combat technique, in which the user uses their finger to pierce the target's flesh, at a very high speed. The resulting wound is roughly the size of a bullet wound.[2] It is a very useful technique that can be carried out rapidly and accurately, which works well with Rokushiki users' impressive speed and agile techniques. The technique can be rendered even stronger if the user coats their finger with Armament Haki.

This technique can be enhanced by Zoan users if their Human-Beast forms grants them sharp claws. Lucci, Jabra, Dalmatian, and Who's-Who all have Human-Beast forms which allow them to stab their opponents with even sharper claws, now akin to modern bullets. Also, every CP9 member who knows this technique has demonstrated their own variant techniques of Shigan, aside from Blueno.

However, as the finger is a very weak body part, the user can risk breaking their fingers from this technique, especially if the opponent can harden their bodies with Armament Haki.[3] Also, this technique is ineffective against eaters of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, as the human finger is not sharp enough to pierce the opponent's rubber body.[4]

Variations[]

  • Shigan "Oren" (指銃「黄蓮オウレン, Shigan "Ōren"?, literally meaning "Finger Gun: 'Yellow Lotus'"): Used by Lucci. This attack is simply a rapid-fire version of the normal Shigan technique that hits the enemy multiple times.[5] In the anime, he is also seen using this technique to kill the captain of a crew who raided the kingdom 15 years ago, but did not name it as "Oren".[6] In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Finger Pistol Yellow Lotus, and in One Piece: Unlimited Adventure (dubbed by Funimation), this is called Shigan: Yellow Lotus. In the English localization of One Piece: Burning Blood, it is mistakenly translated as Tempest Kick: Yellow Lotus.
Stussy Shoots Lu Feld

Tobu Shigan

  • Tobu Shigan (飛ぶ指銃シガン, Tobu Shigan?, literally meaning "Flying Finger Gun"): Used by Stussy. A projectile version of Shigan that fires a sharp compressed air shockwave from the finger thrust enabling the user to injure someone without getting close.[7] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Flying Finger Pistol.
Tobu Shigan "Bachi"

Tobu Shigan "Bachi"

  • Tobu Shigan "Bachi" (飛ぶ指銃「バチ, Tobu Shigan "Bachi"?, literally meaning "Flying Finger Gun: 'Plectrum'"): Used by Lucci in his Human-Beast form. Similar to "Rankyaku", this technique is able to pierce Luffy's rubber body. Unlike all other versions, this type of Shigan is launched by flicking instead of jabbing,[8] though in the anime, Lucci and Jabra demonstrated a variant that involves jabbing. In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Flying Finger Pistol Sting and Flying Finger Pistol Pick in the Funimation subs. The attack's name is a possible play on the term 蜂 (hachi/bachi?, lit. "bee"), hence the projectile nature of the attack and the English translation.
  • Hagan (刃銃ハガン, Hagan?, literally meaning "Blade Gun"): Used by Who's-Who. He thrusts forward his dagger repeatedly, launching a series of sharp, compressed air projectiles. The attack was first used against Jinbe, who deflected it using Fish-Man Karate.[9] In the VIZ manga, the attack's name is Blade Pistol.
Gagan

Who's Who uses Gagan.

  • Gagan (牙銃ガガン, Gagan?, literally meaning "Fang Gun"): Used by Who's-Who in his Human-Beast form. Who's-Who quickly thrusts his maw forward, releasing a blast of compressed air that is shaped like his fangs. The blast makes a biting motion once it connects to a surface, gouging a clean, round hole out of the struck target. It was first used against Jinbe, who successfully dodged the first attack.[10] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, the attack is called Fang Pistol.
Shigan Madara

Who's-Who uses Madara.

  • Shigan "Madara" (指銃「マダラ, Shigan "Madara"?, literally meaning "Finger Gun: 'Speckles'"): Used by Lucci and Who's-Who, in their Human-Beast forms. Appears as Oren, but is performed with both hands instead of one and in Human-Beast Form (meaning that his fingers are clawed), this makes for the ultimate Shigan barrage.[11][12] In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Finger Pistol Spots, and in One Piece: Unlimited Adventure (dubbed by Funimation), this is called Shigan: Spots. In One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 and 4, Lucci is able to (and can only) perform this in his human form.
  • Bigan (鼻銃ビガン, Bigan?, literally meaning "Nose Gun"): Used by Kaku, in his Human-Beast Form. In this attack, Kaku uses his nose instead of his finger to perform the attack.[13] As his nose is much larger in diameter than a finger, the hole it creates is also much larger than that of a normal Shigan, as well as being completely square.[14] In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Nose Pistol, and in One Piece: Unlimited Adventure (dubbed by Funimation), this is called Shigan: Nose Gun.
Kyoku Bigan Kirimanjaro

Kaku using Kyoku Bigan "Kirimanjaro".

  • Kyoku Bigan "Kirimanjaro" (極・鼻銃「麒麟キリマン射櫓ジャロ, Kyōku Bigan "Kirimanjaro"?, literally meaning "Extreme Nose Gun: 'Giraffe-Man Shooting Oar'"): Used by Kaku in Human-Beast Form. After using Kirin Hodai to completely retract his neck into his body, he can fire it out like a cannon, making his Bigan much stronger. The name Kirimanjaro is a reference to "Kilimanjaro", the tallest mountain in Africa that shares the same name.[14] In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Extreme Nose Pistol Giraffe Blast.
  • Jusshigan (十指銃ジュッシガン, Jusshigan?, literally meaning "Ten Finger Guns"): Used by Bonham[15] and Jabra in his Human-Beast Form. In this attack, the user puts both of his hands together and performs Shigan with all ten of his fingers at once, greatly damaging the opponent.[16] In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Ten Finger Pistol.
  • Gekko Jusshigan (月光十指銃ゲッコウジュッシガン, Gekkō Jusshigan?, literally meaning "Moonlight Ten Finger Guns"): A combination of Jusshigan and Geppo. After using Geppo to get himself into the air and subsequently avoid his foe's attack, Jabra finally uses it to launch himself towards his airborne target in a vertical drop. The added momentum and the vulnerable target makes the following Jusshigan more effective, and harder to avoid.[17] In the VIZ manga, this is called Moonlight Ten Finger Pistol.
  • Shigan Cue (指銃 Qキュー, Shigan Kyū?, literally meaning "Finger Gun: Cue"): Used by Kumadori. In this attack, Kumadori uses his blunt staff in the same way a finger is normally used in Shigan. The Q in the name is a reference to a pool cue, which is held in the same manner that Kumadori wields his staff.[18] In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Finger Pistol Q.
Shishi Shigan

Kumadori uses Shishi Shigan.

  • Shishi Shigan (獅子指銃シシシガン, Shishi Shigan?, literally meaning "Lion Finger Gun"): Used by Kumadori. Rather than using his own fingers, Kumadori shapes his hair into the form of hands and repeatedly uses the fingers of said hands to rapidly jab the opponent, similar to Lucci's Shigan "Madara", but less powerful.[19] In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Shishi Finger Pistol.
  • Jugon (獣厳ジュゴン, Jūgon?, literally meaning "Stern Beast" or "Beast Stern"): Used by Fukurou, this is a very strong punch which is done at the same speed as Shigan, making it even more powerful.[20] In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub, this is called Solid Beast.
  • Jugon Ogi: "Fukuro Dataki" (獣厳「奥義」"梟叩フクロき", Jūgon Ōgi: "Fukurō Dataki"?, literally meaning "Stern Beast Secret Technique: 'Owl Thrasher'"): A rapid-fire version of Jugon, in which Fukurou unleashes a flurry of punches at the enemy while using Soru to move around him, in order to strike from all directions.[20] In the anime, Fukurou creates after images of himself that circle the opponent to strike them. This is called Solid Beast Supreme Technique Owl Strike in the VIZ manga and Secret Technique: Owl Thrashing in the Funimation dub. The kanji for Fukurodataki is a play on the original kanji 袋叩き (lit. "Pouch Thrasher"), which is read the same way (or as Fukurotataki with a "t" instead) and is meant to be a term for beating up someone via a gang up.
  • Shinaru Shigan "Whip" (しなる指銃「ウイップ, Shinaru Shigan "Uippu"?, literally meaning "Bending Finger Gun: 'Whip'"): Used by Kalifa. In this attack, Kalifa pulls back her arm as if to use a normal Shigan attack, then whips her arm out at the opponent at high speed, causing her arm to appear as if it is bending like a whip would, and hits the enemy with her finger. The whip aspect of this variation results in the added effect of the target being thrown forcibly backwards.[21] This is called Bendy Finger Pistol Whip in the VIZ manga and Supple Finger Pistol Whip in the Funimation dub.
Lucci Stabs Sentomaru

Lucci uses Shugan.

  • Shugan (手銃シュガン, Shugan?, literally meaning "Hand Gun"): Used by Lucci in his awakened Human-Hybrid form. Lucci keeps all five fingers extended and stabs the opponent with his whole hand. This was first used against Sentomaru.[22] In the VIZ manga, this is called Hand Pistol.
    • Shugan: Oren (手銃シュガン 黄蓮オウレン, Shugan: Ōren?, literally meaning Hand Gun: Yellow Lotus): Used by Lucci in his Human-Hybrid form. Lucci uses a rapid-fire version of Shugan to hit his opponent several times similar to Shigan "Oren". This was first used against S-Bear.[23] In the VIZ manga and Crunchyroll subs, this is called Hand Pistol Yellow Lotus.
    • Shugan: Madara (手銃シュガン マダラ, Shugan: Madara?, literally meaning "Hand Gun: Speckles"): Used by Lucci in his awakened Human-Hybrid form. Lucci performs Shugan with both hands in a very rapid barrage of attacks similar to Shigan "Madara". This was first used against Zoro.[24] In the VIZ manga, this is called Hand Pistol Spots.
  • Tosa Gami (土茶トサ噛み, Tosa Gami?, literally meaning "Earthen Tea Bite"): Used by Tosa. After hardening his hands with Armament Haki, Tosa holds his hands together and performs Shigan with all ten fingers, similar to Jabra's Jusshigan. Tosa claims it can pierce any armor. This was first attempted to be used against Jewelry Bonney, but Tosa was stopped by Brogy before it could connect.[25] In the VIZ manga, this is called Tosa Bite.

Non-Canon Variations[]

  • Tobu Shigan "Mitsubachi" (飛ぶ指銃「三撥」, Tobu Shigan "Mitsubachi"?, literally meaning "Flying Finger Gun: 'Three Plectrums'"): Used by Lucci in his Human-Beast form. Lucci fires the Tobu Shigan: Bachi three times consecutively.[26] This is called Rapid Fire Triple Sting in the Funimation dub and Three Picks in the subs. The kanji for "mitsubachi" is a play on 蜜蜂, which is the Japanese term for a honeybee.
Tobu Shigan Hibachi

Tobu Shigan Hibachi.

  • Tobu Shigan "Hibachi" (飛ぶ指銃「火撥」, Tobu Shigan "Hibachi"?, literally meaning "Flying Finger Gun: 'Fire Plectrum'"): Used by Lucci in his Human-Beast form. Same as Tobu Shigan: Bachi, except that the projectile is a fireball, possibly created through friction, that burns the victim upon impact.[26] Hibachi is a type of Japanese grill, or a brazier (and is originally read with the kanji 火鉢). This is called Flying Finger Pistol Fire Sting in the Funimation dub and Flying Finger Pistol Fire Pick in the subs. In the English localization of One Piece: Burning Blood, it is called Finger Pistol: Fire Sting.
  • Shigan "Five" (指銃「ファイブ」, Shigan "Faibu"?, literally meaning "Finger Gun: 'Five'"): Used by Shuzo, he does Shigan with all five fingers on one hand. This was first used against Luffy. In the Funimation sub, this is called Finger Pistol Five.
  • Shigan "Ten" (指銃「テン」, Shigan "Ten"?, literally meaning "Finger Gun: 'Ten'"): Used by Shuzo, he does Shigan with all ten fingers on both hands similar to Jabra's Jusshigan. This was first used against Luffy. In the Funimation sub, this is called Finger Pistol Ten.
  • Shigan "Sentoso" (指銃「仙洞草」, Shigan "Sentōsō"?, literally meaning "Finger Gun: 'Hermit Cave Grass'"): An upward version of Shigan: Oren used by Lucci in One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World, as a followup to his Shoukoushou (昇硬掌?, lit. "Rising Stiff Palm") (his upward weak attack).

Trivia[]

  • The Shigan technique is most likely a reference to the Shaolin Monks' fictional technique: Shaolin Finger Jab.
  • If a person's finger is strong enough, it is possible to emulate Shigan in real life.[1]
  • The French dub of the anime refers to this technique as "Index Gun" (in English).
  • Oda was asked what would happen if Shigan were used on someone's buttocks. He stated that the technique would kill the victim.[27]
  • In another SBS, Oda also claimed that the CP9 agents would sprain their fingers when they failed in the technique during training.[28]
