Rope Action is Paulie's fighting style. It is based on using ropes in a variety of ways to bind, strike, or defend against opponents.

Overview[]

Thanks to his expertise in rigging and knots, Paulie has extraordinary skill in employing ropes not only for his shipwright job, but also as a combat weapon. Combined with Paulie's acrobatics, this style is quite versatile and formidable.

Paulie Saves Franky Family and Giants

The ropes holding the weight of giants and King Bulls.

The amount of ropes Paulie keeps hidden within his body seems to be infinite, and he appears to pull them out from hammerspace. These ropes are also strong enough to support the weight of giants and King Bulls; Paulie says it is a special Galley-La Company woven rope and claims it is unbreakable.[2] These two traits, among others, often give the false impression that the ropes result from the power of a Devil Fruit.

Techniques[]

  • Rope Action: Round Turn (ロープ・アクション ラウンド・ターン, Rōpu Akushon: Raundo Tān?): After positioning himself between several enemies, Paulie grabs them with ropes and pulls them inward, slamming the victims against each other.[1]
  • Rope Action: Bowline Knot (ロープ・アクション ボーラインノット, Rōpu Akushon: Bōrain Notto?): Paulie launches a rope that ties around an opponent's wrist, restricting their movements.[3]
  • Oshioki: Ippon Dzuri (オシオキ 一本釣り, Oshioki: Ippon Dzuri?, literally meaning "Punishment: Gone Fishing"): After snaring an opponent with rope, Paulie throws them and slams them head-first into the ground.[4] This is called Hook, Line and Sinker in the Viz manga, Punishment Hook, Line and Sinker in the FUNimation dub and Punishment Pole-and-line Fishing in the FUNimation subs.
  • Rope Action: Half-Knot Air Drive (ロープ・アクション ハーフノット エア・ドライブ, Rōpu Akushon: Hāfu-Notto Ea Doraibu?): Paulie ties a rope around an opponent's neck, choking them, and slams them into the floor.[5]
Pipe Hitch Knives

Pipe Hitch Knives.

  • Pipe Hitch Knives (パイプ・ヒッチ・ナイブス, Paipu Hitchi Naibusu?): Paulie launches a rope with a spiraling row of knives tied to it to cut or slash his target.[6]
  • Rope Action: Figure of Eight Knot (ロープ・アクション フィギュアオブ・エイト・ノット, Rōpu Akushon: Figyua obu Eito Notto?): Paulies shoots out eight ropes, knotted heavily on the ends, like fists in eight directions. It can be used to hit multiple targets at once.[7] This is called Figure-of-Eight Knot in the FUNimation dub.
  • Rope Action: Timber Hitch Tug (ロープ・アクション ティンバー・ヒッチ・タグ, Rōpu Akushon: Tinbā Hitchi Tagu?): Paulie jumps into the air, somersaults, and unleashes several ropes that grab an enemy, with the force of Paulie's fall pulling the target down into the ground.[8]
  • Top Knot (独楽結びタップ・ノット, Tappu Notto?, literally meaning "Spinning Top Bind"): Paulie throws a rope that spirals upwards and ties around his target's body. Then, when the rope is pulled with enough force, the enemy spins like a top, eventually collapsing from dizziness.[9]
  • Shrouds and Ratline Knot (シュラウズ・アンド ラットリン・ノット, Shurauzu ando Ratto-Rin Notto?): Paulie creates a large net out of ropes and slams it on top of several enemies.[10] This is called Shrouds and Rattling Knot in the FUNimation dub of One Piece: Unlimited Adventure.
