22 years before the present, King Bekori of the Sorbet Kingdom instilled a new policy of segregation within his country, which promoted the enslavement of people that lived to the south of Sorbet. After entering in conflict with the southern pastor Bartholomew Kuma over kidnapped civilians and then imprisoning him for treason alongside Ginny and their friends, Bekori's castle was attacked by the Freedom Fighters under Monkey D. Dragon and Emporio Ivankov, which forced him out of his country.
Bekori, however, did not give up on his rule and returned to Sorbet 16 years later.[2] Inspired by the burning of the Gray Terminal that occured at the Goa Kingdom 6 years prior, Bekori planned to directly burn the homes of citizens that he deemed useless to Sorbet, retaliating even against those who lived in the north and protested against his actions. Kuma, who was alerted by wounded villagers about Bekori's sudden return, rushed towards the royal palace with the intent of stopping him himself.[2] Having had enough of Bekori's cruelty and bloodshed, Kuma singlehandedly destroyed the palace with his Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, defeating Bekori's forces in one fell swoop.
Aftermath[]
Following Bekori's second ousting, Kuma was elected Sorbet's new King, although in truth he was a mere figurehead, leaving the actual political duties to Bekori's predecessor, Bulldog. One day Kuma was warned by Bulldog that Bekori had once again survived and was planning a third comeback, now with official support from the Marines and the World Government, the latter which contributed with smear campaigns against Kuma's reign as the "Tyrant". Knowing he could no longer stay in Sorbet if he were to stop Bekori once again due to the government's involvement, Kuma decided to head out to sea and become a pirate, leaving Sorbet (as well as his daughter Bonney) in the hands of Bulldog once more.
At sea, Kuma confronted three Marine battleships, with Bekori onboard one of them. As the twice-ousted King ordered the Marines to fire against Kuma's boat, the latter simply counterattacked and sunk the entire fleet, presumably getting rid of Bekori in the process. After this act, Kuma officially became a wanted man.
