Super Kabuki II: One Piece (スーパー歌舞伎II ワンピース, Sūpā kabuki II wanpīsu?) is a Japanese kabuki play that premiered in 2015. It follows the plot of the Summit War Saga, covering the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, the Amazon Lily Arc, the Impel Down Arc and the Marineford Arc.[1] The play is one in the set of Super Kabuki II plays featuring Ichikawa Ennosuke IV as the lead.[2] The play was produced by movie company Shochiku.[3] The show was first announced on December 21, 2014.[4]
Information
Super Kabuki II ran from October 7 to November 25, 2015 at the Shinbashi Enbujo in Ginza, Tokyo, where 78 performances were held. Shows were performed either midday from 11:00 AM to 3:25 PM or in the evening from 4:30 PM to 8:35.[5] Tickets for the October shows went on sale starting August 20, while tickets for the November shows went on sale starting September 20.[2] The tickets were all sold out, attracting over 100,000 spectators in its two month run.[6] The show ran in Osaka at the Shochikuza the following year from March 1 to March 25, where 40 performances were held.[7] The show also ran in Fukuoka at the Hakata from April 2 to 26, where 39 performances were held.[6] A year later, Super Kabuki II ran again at the Shinbashi Enbujo in Ginza from October 6 to November 25, 2017. Lead actor Ichikawa Ennosuke did not return to the show for this final production run.[8]
Super Kabuki II is broken into three acts. Act 1 is 60 minutes in length, followed by a 30-minute intermission. Act 2 is 65 minutes in length, followed by a 25-minute intermission. Act 3 is 85 minutes in length.[5] The show incorporates flying rigs, waterfalls, pyrotechnics, and light shows to highlight fights, the Newkama's singing and dancing, and other dramatic scenes.[1]
In Tokyo, the venue was selling merchandise and One Piece-themed bento boxed lunches.[7]
Yujin Kitagawa, a member of Japanese pop-rock duo Yuzu, wrote a theme song for the show.[9]
Branded Partnerships
To promote the show, healthcare company Isshindo Honpo released a face mask pack featuring Luffy (in his kabuki appearance) and Shanks. They were sold at Shinbashi Enbujo starting November 21, as well as on the company's online store, Jump Store, Mugiwara Store, and Shueisha's official online store Mekke! starting November 27. They were sold at ¥1,200 per pack.[10]
Cinema Kabuki One Piece
Super Kabuki II was recorded and broadcasted in Japan under the title Cinema Kabuki One Piece as a two-hour film. It was first broadcasted on October 22, 2016.[11]
Cinema Kabuki One Piece was shown with English subtitles at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California on November 27, 2016. Admission for the show was free.[12]
Deviations from the Source Material
To streamline the plot to fit in a single three-act play, the show alters or omits certain parts of each arc. For example, in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, Strawberry confronts the Straw Hat Pirates, Hatchan, and Camie and the Human Auctioning House after Luffy's attacks Charlos.[11]
