Reason for Move? Edit
Why was it moved from XI to IX? The manga said XI. If there isn't a reason I'm going to get rid of the redirect.DancePowderer 16:45, January 13, 2011 (UTC)
- You read Japanese manga? It says 九世=IX. (Not 十一世=XI) --Klobis 03:48, January 14, 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I couldn't find a raw, so I didn't understand. Sorry to have bothered you.DancePowderer 05:54, January 14, 2011 (UTC)
Mato Mato no Mi Edit
Just because the Mermaid Princess described it as "Mato Mato" in the style of Devil Fruits for his ability, that doesn't automatically make it a Devil Fruit.
Why is everyone so prone to jumping to conclusions just from seeing one panels worth of information? You guys did the same thing with Caribou (and yes, in the end it was a correct assumption), but it was still an assumption nonetheless and as far as I can tell such things are not permitted on this Wikia, are they not? Subrosian 20:38, February 2, 2011 (UTC)
His ship is coated, and he met Jones while wearing a flutter kick coating. Why else would a fishman need a flutter kick coating?DancePowderer 20:42, February 2, 2011 (UTC)
Although I agree with DP that all evidence is proven, I partially agree with Sub that we can't b ecareful enough and this is indeed not permitted on the wikia. Not confirmed means speculations, which equals forbidden. But let's go along with it, I don't mind. Yountoryuu 20:49, February 2, 2011 (UTC)
I don't agree with saying that Decken ate a Devil Fruit at all. I agree with Yountoryuu that speculations are forbidden, and we should only call this a curse and nothing else.184.108.40.206 23:42, February 8, 2011 (UTC)
Remember, a devil fruit is "a curse", especially for fishmen who are always UNDERWATER. Although I find the speculation part annoying, it is probably ok to leave the Mato Mato no Mi thing. If it is some kind of "devil fruit especially for fishmen" or whatnot, we can always rename the page. As for the subbs, it is accurate. In Japanese, Shrahoshi says "「マトマト」という悪魔の呪いを受けておられ。。。" which directly translates to "he took a devil's curse called "Mato Mato"". I'm confident this is referring to a DF. JapaneseOPfan 00:06, February 9, 2011 (UTC)
I agree how likely that it is a Devil Fruit, however, it was never directly stated as a Devil Fruit so we should simply call it a curse because, as I said before, speculation is forbidden. Atleast onepiece.wikkii doesn't call it a Devil Fruit. I think we should just remove all referances that it is a Devil Fruit and simply call it "Mato Mato" until it is directly stated as Devil Fruit. 220.127.116.11 23:55, February 9, 2011 (UTC)
- I agree. It's pretty blatantly obvious that it's a DF. But we've avoided speculation thus far, let's not break that shall we?
- To make it clear, you are against the site keeping it as a Devil Fruit? If anyone else agrees, remove all refrances that it is a Devil Fruit, keep it a curse, and rename the Devil Fruit article just to Mato Mato. 18.104.22.168 00:57, February 10, 2011 (UTC)
- Van Der Decken is not the only fishman with more legs than arms, a few others are shown in the background in fishman island. Zio Barbocchia (talk) 01:58, August 21, 2013 (UTC) August 21 2013
Possible inspiration Edit
It's possible that Hordy Jones and Vander Decken IX are modelled on "il Gatto e la Volpe" (The Cat and the Fox) from Collodi's Pinocchio... (See Talk:Hordy Jones for the rest). leviathan_89 23:54, February 21, 2011 (UTC)
This is really interesting. It makes sense considering the strange "catlike" mouth of Vander Decken and the fox (?) hanging around Hordi's neck. Nice catch, however we better wait for more opinions. Jinbe 00:00, February 22, 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I think we should wait too, but if someone has something to say on this he should write it on the Hordy Jones' Talk page this way we can discuss on a single page. leviathan_89 00:37, February 22, 2011 (UTC)
Hey! Don't you think an inspiration for his character could be Johnny "Fairplay" Dalton from Survivor: Pearl Islands? His pose is reminiscent of Fairplay's pose with the arms crossed with victory signs. Just saying. And yeah, that Survivor was all about pirates.WhitzellBlood 16:13, July 15, 2011 (UTC)WhitzellBlood
I was under the assumption that "IX" is the Roman numeral for nine or ninth,so how does that make Decken the eighth descendant of the Vander Decken of Legend ? wouldn't he be the Ninth? O_oHordy4040 03:46, March 24, 2011 (UTC)
When talking about the generations, he is the ninth because he is the ninth generation of family to bear the name. In terms of descendency, the original Vander Decken would not count, since he could not be his own descendent. Think of the original Decken as generation 0.04:00, March 24, 2011 (UTC)
- The first two sentences are right, DancePowderer, but then you contradict yourself: the original is generation 1, what you wanted to say is that he's the "0th descendant"! Hordy4040, you just have to think that king Henry II was the first descendant of Henry I (who is the original Henry), Henry III was the second descendant, etc. sff9 (talk) 10:45, March 24, 2011 (UTC)
Ok thanks guys,I thought I was losing my mind lol xDD that makes perfect sense.
Anyone think the whole "IX" thing could be a hint by Oda confirming Decken as the "ninth" memeber of the Strawhats? I mean he did the same kind of hint in Water 7 with Franky of course being the 7th member after
sounds farfetched with his current role in the arc but tell me what you think.22.214.171.124 11:55, March 24, 2011 (UTC)

Decken took an intrest in Shirahoshi about 10 years ago. 12 or so years ago, Arlong tired to recruit him, meaning he had to be bare-minimum late teens-early 20's. Chapter 621 showed 6 years prior to his stalking she was born. So, Decken is estimated to have started to stalk Shirahoshi when she was about 6 or 7. Basically this means that Vander Decken is a... Paedophile! GenkiMan 16:58, April 15, 2011 (UTC)
That's very much dependent on how Fishmen and Mermen age. But a minor discrepency I noticed is that it was stated earlier that the Neptune Army was formed to take down Decken, but in Chapter 621 (with a baby Shirahoshi), the Neptune Army was already all over the place. Or did I misunderstand and Neptune only formed a special task force to hunt for Decken? That would probably make more sense after all.
Forgive me if this has already been explained in-universe. I'm currently reading Chapter 621.Son of God-Enel 20:44, May 4, 2011 (UTC)
Nevermind. He isn't really in love with the princess, he just wants her because of her ability to summon sea kings. 126.96.36.199 08:25, May 19, 2011 (UTC)
Fishman? Merman! Edit
I don't remember if in his formal introduction it is said "Vander Decken IX is a ... fishman", but actually he has four legs, making his fish-like half-body the lowest, making him a merman. Am I right? --Meganoide 23:14, May 16, 2011 (UTC)
Oh... now that you mention it. It's hard to determine when we have characters like the minister of the right or VD IX. So, do we just change this? Or was there possibly some kind of proof he was a fishman? 23:19, May 16, 2011 (UTC)
Don't Merman usually have tails instead of legs? Panda 23:24, May 16, 2011 (UTC)
God I hate edit conflicts. The species description of his infobox in chapter 613 says he is a fishman. He is the first fishman to have multiple legs, but multiple limbs aren't unheard of, look at Hatchan and Muhhi. It looks like his legs don't split, but the width of his waist (running from tailbone to groin) is wider than normal to allow for the extra legs.23:27, May 16, 2011 (UTC)
Just to ensure everyone, i did not start any war adit, and I didn't even notice it, if it happened after my question. However if the infobox says he's a fishman, I accept it. PS Hatchan and Muhhi are really fishmen, so their multiple limbs on the upper side of the body is obvious. I was actually thinking about Hyozo, a merman who hasn't tail, but tentacles. I thought that for VD IX it was the same thing. --Meganoide 21:44, May 18, 2011 (UTC)
Dutch ancestry Edit
Why isn't at the trivia not noted that Vander Decken IX is named after the Dutch pirate captain Willem van der Decken. Which probably is a fictional name but most common in stories. But the myth and the ship have Dutch ancestry. This is the first person in One Piece who was named after something Dutch. Not counting Bliking as it's a ship. Or is it not stated at the trivia, because Oda hasn't confirmed information about it. But in the past people before have added such references even if they were not sure about it. Like the trivia about Wallem. (funny that the Dutch had many pirates only now there is one reference at a Dutch pirate) CapoDiLoco
Is Decken really dead? i say he really is (the axe of Decken stopped following Hody after the axe hit Decken) but before i start an edit war i would want to know if everyone agree's
Leave it as it is for now... We'll see in the next chapters.. But he cant be dead like that..
It is not a spectulation, as everyone believe that he passed out.I am not gonna cause any edit war on this wiki.Let it remain as it is.((((Stone Roger)))) ~ Talk~ One piece wiki 18:02, October 1, 2011 (UTC)
Yes it is speculation. The only characters that should be on the dead list are CONFIRMED characters. SeaTerror 18:57, October 1, 2011 (UTC)
He fainted, most likely from going into shock, which would explain the foaming at the mouth. People don't normally foam at the mouth when they die. The only times I can think that someone would die and foam at the mouth are cyanide poisoning and sodium overdose, neither of which happened. He's alive until proven dead.06:09, October 2, 2011 (UTC)
New image Edit
Would it be nice to add an image of Decken using his sandal knives against Hody? Aoshi shigamori 22:24, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
Your right. I upload it yesterday and I forgot to put it here. Thanks.
He speaks on the game Gigant Battle 2: New World. So, who´s his voice actor?
Decken in the sea Edit
When Hody destroyed the bubble of the Noah, Decken was aboard, fainted. The fact that he survived, isn't an implicit evidence that he can breath and survive underwater? (like we should expect, since it's a fishman) The only side-effect of being a DF user would be the loss of physical power. Hence I think the sentence "It is yet unknown if other fishman abilities such as breathing underwater are affected by his powers" should be corrected or just removed. leviathan_89 18:50, 14 February, 2013 (UTC)
You're right. Submersion basically causes catatonia, which for humans means drowning since they can't move to get to air. But for fishmen that would simply mean laying there while still able to breathe.21:18, February 14, 2013 (UTC)
Erotomania and OthersEdit
Since we see Vander Decken IX suffers from Erotomania should we also add that to Hancock and Sanji's pages? Like when they believe someone else loves them even though they clearly aren't loved back?
At least on Hancock since like Vander Decken she has her own "image" of Luffy in her mind as a perfect blue prince, similar to how Vander Decken sees a more "naughty" shirahoshi in her mind
188.8.131.52 22:31, June 12, 2015 (UTC)
We shouldn't even have it on this page, as once again, posting that people have a real condition makes a wider claim than we can verify. The wikipedia article on Erotomania implies that Decken is "likely schizophrenic" based on the erotomania, a claim that should not be on the page. Talk | 23:06, June 12, 2015 (UTC)
Okay. Here's my point on this. Using all the canon information, Vander Decken's obsession with Shirahoshi does not come with something erotic. He just wants her because of her abilities as Pluton. Hancock's "love sickness" is just liking Luffy.
