Summary[]
Aboard the Going Merry at sea, the Straw Hat Pirates reminisce about Vivi and wonder what could have been had she joined the crew when she came to say goodbye at the coast of the Arabasta Kingdom. Suddenly they hear gunshots and notice a small boat flying a pirate flag. Aboard the boat they see a person wearing a red cloak, who soon jumps aboard the Going Merry. After the initial shock, they discover that the person is Vivi, with Karoo accompanying her aboard the boat. Vivi reveals that Marine Headquarters has labelled her a criminal for working with pirates and covered up Crocodile's crimes by placing the blame for the conflict in Arabasta on her. She now has a bounty of 50,000,000. She has been looking for the Straw Hat Pirates and hopes to become a true member of the crew. The crew welcomes her with open arms, although Zoro questions whether she has what it takes to be a real pirate. The others promise to teach her how to act like a pirate and Luffy accepts her into the crew.
Usopp asks Vivi to help him with fixing up the ship and teaches her to act less formal, describing how a certain other female pirate acts. Nami overhears them and angrily hits Usopp, then teaches Vivi to do the same. When Sanji arrives with some seductive pirate outfits for Vivi and Nami, they punch him and the other guys who were getting excited. Soon a storm pick ups and the crew gets to work steadying the ship. However, the storm is too powerful and they sail into a tornado that causes them to fall overboard.
Vivi awakens on the beach of a jungle island with Chopper and Karoo. Karoo had carried the other two to shore, but the rest of the crew is nowhere to be seen. The group starts hearing heavy footsteps that cause the ground to shake, then a powerful roar that scares them. Inside the jungle, Nami and Usopp sneak around separately and freak out when they bump into each other. They start arguing but soon realize there is a large beast behind them. While escaping from the creature, they run into Sanji as well.
On a sandy beach of the island, Luffy and Zoro are sleeping. Luffy's snoring annoys Zoro, so he sticks stones into his nose and mouth. Vivi's group arrives on at the beach and Vivi tells Chopper that the monster they heard was likely a banbaraba, a large gorilla-like creature. Vivi learned about the creature during her training undercover in Baroque Works. The organization attempted to use the banbaraba for offense, but contrary to its frightening appearance, it is a relatively docile animal, so they were not successful. Vivi suspects something is wrong with the banbaraba they encountered as it was acting so aggressively. They notice the Going Merry with Luffy and Zoro sleeping on the beach. Vivi realizes Luffy is not breathing and starts hitting him to resuscitate him, which causes the stones to come loose and Luffy wakes up. Luffy is angry at Zoro but the group notices something wrong with Luffy's face. Nami's group also arrives at the beach and everyone starts laughing at Luffy's face. His cheeks are swollen due to a toxin getting into his wounds, making him look like a fat elderly person. Chopper explains that the toxin is slowly spreading into the body, but they can treat it with something called mirabara grass. Vivi says that there should be mirabara grass on the island as it is part of the banbaraba's diet. The crew decides to leave the matter for tomorrow as it is already becoming night and the dark jungle is dangerous. They decide to hold a feast during the evening.
At midnight while the crew is sleeping, Vivi decides to sneak out on her own to find the mirabara grass. Karoo notices this and accompanies Vivi, and they discover footprints of the banbaraba in the jungle. Vivi determines that the banbaraba is female based on a unique trait in the footprints. They find the banbaraba's nest with mirabara grass surrounding it, but the banbaraba arrives and attacks Vivi. Vivi tells Karoo to run as she is thrown off the edge of a cliff. Her foot has been hurt from the attack, but she determinedly tries to climb back up in order to be of help to her crewmates. Meanwhile the other crew members except Luffy and Zoro have woken up and noticed Vivi is missing. They go looking for her and leave the sleeping Luffy and Zoro behind. However, Karoo soon arrives and wakes the duo up, carrying them on his back.
Vivi manages to climb back up the cliff but hears soft cries coming from below. She realizes the banbaraba is aggressive because its baby is missing. Nami, Usopp, Sanji and Chopper arrive while the banbaraba confronts Vivi. Vivi tries to tell the banbaraba that its child has fallen off the cliff but is still alive. The banbaraba attacks Vivi, who does not dodge to avoid damaging the cliff edge. She tells the others not to attack the banbaraba, and reaches out to the baby hanging onto the cliff and manages to grab it, but the cliff edge begins to crumble. Just as Vivi and the baby are about to fall, Luffy arrives and stretches his arm to grab them. The cliff begins to crumble further but Luffy manages to jump to safety. Vivi hands the mirabara grass to Luffy and the banbaraba reunites with its baby. Luffy is grateful but tells Vivi to trust the crew more in the future instead of sneaking out by herself. Vivi expresses happiness at being able to continue traveling with crew from here on out. Luffy tells the crew to set sail for new adventures.
Aboard the Going Merry, Luffy wakes up from a dream that he cannot remember. Chopper tells him that it must have been a dream about Vivi since he was muttering her name in his sleep. Nami tells him that she also occasionally dreams about Vivi. Luffy says that their voice will definitely reach Vivi and shouts her name. Back in the palace in Arabasta, Vivi says that her soul continues to travel with the crew and that the crew live on in her way of life, so she will not say "goodbye".
