"The Legendary Log! Red-Haired Shanks!" is the 8th episode recap of the One Piece anime. It covers Shanks ending the Summit War of Marineford and his past with Luffy. Despite being mostly a recap, the episode also contains some original scenes tying in with Uta's Past Arc and One Piece Film: Red.

Long Summary[]

A ship of Marines listens to one of Uta's songs as they head to Elegia for her concert. As Helmeppo complains about wanting to arrive sooner, Koby reminds him that they're going on official business, not to have fun. They're visiting to build up information about Uta, and to prepare in case of the Red Hair Pirates involving themselves. Helmeppo points out that Shanks saved Koby during the Summit War of Marineford, though Koby rebukes him and tells him that it's just a coincidence, pointing out that Shanks ended the entire war. Thinking back, Koby remembers his confrontation with Sakazuki, and how Shanks saved him at the last second.

Two years ago, Shanks blocks Sakazuki's attack, congratulating Koby on standing up for what he believed in. He states that he's come to end the war, telling everybody that if they want to continue fighting, to fight him instead. He challenges Blackbeard directly, but he refuses, telling Shanks that he already got what he came for. As Blackbeard leaves, Shanks tells everybody to do as he says, and says that he will handle the burials of Ace and Whitebeard. He refuses to allow the Marines to dishonor their deaths anymore than they already have by broadcasting the war, and though Doberman argues, Sengoku agrees to Shanks' demands. The Fleet Admiral states that he will take the blame for the decision, and Shanks thanks him, as Sengoku announces that the war is over.

Back in the present, Helmeppo considers that despite being a pirate, Shanks doesn't act pirate-like, and Koby agrees, stating that he's too bigger-than-life and respected by his peers and Navy soldiers alike. He compares Shanks to Luffy, causing Helmeppo to laugh and agree. Koby considers the fact that he's duty-bound to arrest them, and vows to get stronger to do so.

In Foosha Village, Woop Slap and Makino sit in Partys Bar, while Woop Slap tries to find information about Shanks. Makino asks if he's worried about him, but Woop Slap rebukes her, saying he's not concerned about pirates. Makino points out that Shanks wasn't very pirate-like, but Woop Slap points out that he's still a member of the Four Emperors. He concludes that Shanks' strength means he doesn't need to worry about his wellbeing, and Makino thinks back to Shanks' time in Foosha Village.

12 years ago, Luffy and Shanks sit in Partys Bar, and Luffy asks to join Shanks' crew. However, Shanks just laughs at him, stating that a pirate needs to be able to swim. Luffy argues, saying he just won't fall out of the ship, and states that he's a strong fighter, but Shanks just calls him a kid. He gives Luffy juice, which he accepts, prompting Shanks to laugh at him again. Suddenly, the door bursts open, and Higuma walks in with his bandits. He asks Makino for alcohol, but she informs him that she's out. However, he points out that the pirates are drinking alcohol, and Shanks apologizes for drinking the last of it. He offers Higuma a bottle, but the bandit just smashes it, spraying the contents over Shanks. Higuma begins bragging about his bounty, but Shanks ignores him, apologizing to Makino for the floor getting dirty and beginning to clean the broken bottle. This prompts Higuma to slash his sword across the countertop, knocking over the plates, and tells Shanks to clean it up, before leaving the bar.

Once he's left, the pirates begin laughing at Shanks, but Luffy starts yelling at them, saying they're not real men. Shanks argues, saying that Higuma just spilled alcohol on him, but Luffy starts walking out of the bar. As Shanks grabs his arm to stop him, Luffy's arm begins to stretch, shocking the pirates and making them realize that Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi from Shanks' box. Shanks reveals its abilities, shocking Luffy.

Some time later, Luffy gets into a fight with Higuma, telling him to apologize. Higuma gets annoyed with Luffy, and decides to kill Luffy. However, Shanks suddenly appears, telling Luffy that he thought his attacks were as strong as pistols. He begins to walk towards Higuma, and one of the bandits threatens to shoot Shanks if he comes any closer. However, Shanks tells the bandit that he's got to be prepared to use the pistol, and Lucky Roux shoots the bandit. As the bandits get angry, Shanks tells him that as long as people don't hurt his friends, he'll just laugh off whatever they do. But, because the bandits messed with Luffy, they have to pay. Higuma tells his bandits to attack, but Beckman quickly defeats them, prompting Higuma to throw down a smoke bomb and grab Luffy, sailing out to sea. Once out, he throws Luffy into the water, but is suddenly eaten by the Lord of the Coast. As Luffy drowns, the monster charges towards him. Suddenly, Shanks appears, grabbing Luffy and scaring off the Sea King. As he leaves, Shanks thanks Luffy for defending him, telling him not to cry, but Luffy points out how he Shanks lost his arm to the Lord of the Coast. Later, as Shanks leaves Foosha Village, he gives Luffy his Straw Hat, telling him to return it some day.

Back in the present, Woop Slap sees the announcement about Uta's concert on Elegia in the newspaper. He notices that Uta looks familiar, and Makino recognizes her as the girl that Shanks brought to Foosha Village twelve years prior. The two think about to Luffy and Uta's friendship, as well as when Shanks returned to Foosha Village without her. Makino congratulates her for working hard on her dream, and Woop Slap states that she's another big name from Foosha Village.

On Elegia, Uta looks out to sea, preparing for her concert.

Anime Notes[]

  • Blenheim's beard was incorrectly animated as black, instead of gray. This matches his design from 22 years ago.[1]
  • Makino is shown as having dark green hair in the present day, but black hair during her flashback.
  • When Higuma smashes the bottle of alcohol over Shanks, Luffy is first shown eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi, then behind Shanks without it, then is completely gone from the scene. He is later shown holding the fruit again.
