The Ton Ton no Mi[2] is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit which allows the user to increase their weight, making them a Super Weight Human (超体重スーパーウエイト人間, Sūpā Weito Ningen?).[3] It was eaten by the former Donquixote Family combatant Machvise.

The fruit's power was shown during the conflict of Dressrosa,[1] but was not named until it was revealed in SBS Volume 79.[2]

Etymology[]

  • "Ton" (トン?) is the Japanese word for "ton," referring to the unit of measure for weight.

Strengths and Weaknesses[]

The fruit allows the user to increase their body weight by incredible amounts, measured in metric tonnes (not to be confused with the imperial tons). This allows them to land crushing attacks that can easily crack the ground and even break the bones of giants.[4]

The fruit is superior to the Kiro Kiro no Mi, since while both fruits revolve around the manipulation of body weight, the user of the Ton Ton no Mi can become much heavier than the Kiro Kiro no Mi's maximum of 10,000 kilograms.[2] The lowest weight shown is ten tonnes (equivalent to ten thousand kilograms) and the highest weight shown is 10,000 tonnes (equivalent to ten million kilograms). The user's weight can also be supplemented by holding other heavy objects, as Machvise sometimes crushes his opponents while holding a large shield.

The fruit has not been stated or shown to be able to make the user lighter than their usual weight like the Kiro Kiro no Mi can. However, it still grants the user the ability to float in the air almost as if they were weightless.

The fruit's power will prove ineffective should an opponent be capable of withstanding the selected weight, and can even use the force of the weight against the user, as shown when Hajrudin, a giant, defeated Machvise. Also, as the user is unable to manipulate the trajectory of their fall, any opponent sufficiently fast can dodge the attacks with relative ease. Missing the target will also mean landing on hard ground, and unlike the Kiro Kiro no Mi the user of this fruit is not protected by the impact of their own attacks; Machvise complained of a stomachache when his attack missed Franky, causing him to land on hard ground on his stomach.[1] Likely to prevent harming himself this way, Machvise often holds onto a shield to protect himself. The sheer force of the impact may cause unwanted collateral damage to the ground.

Lastly, since the user is only given crushing-based techniques, this fruit's power is rendered completely ineffective against eaters of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, as the latter's body has rubber-like properties and is therefore unaffected by blunt attacks.[5] Other than that, the user is affected by the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses.

Usage[]

Machvise's Shield

Machvise using his shield to augment his bodyslam.

In a way almost identical to the user of the Kiro Kiro no Mi, Machvise uses the fruit in combat by floating in the air, positioning themselves.[1]

Techniques[]

  • Jutton Vise (10tトンヴァイス, Jutton Vaisu?, literally meaning "Ten Ton Vise"): Machvise floats above his opponent then crashes down, either landing on his stomach or his shield. Due to Machvise's sheer size, he is able to cover a relatively large area. It was first used in an attempt to crush Franky after Senor Pink protected him from the cyborg's rocket launcher,[1] and named when he used it against Luffy, this time with Senor Pink holding their opponent's legs down with the help of his ability. Luffy managed to escape by stretching out of the way, and the impact of being hit with ten metric tons did not appear to affect his rubber legs.[3] The first time he managed to strike someone down with this technique was against Boo.[6] This is called Ten-Ton Vise in the VIZ Manga and 10-Ton Vise in the Funimation dub.
  • Hakai no Senton Vise (破壊の千tトンヴァイス, Hakai no Senton Vaisu?, literally meaning "1000 Ton Vise of Destruction"): One hundred times heavier and more destructive version of Jutton Vise. While performing this move, he uses his unique shield to increase its power. In the manga, Machvise first attempted to use this move against Roronoa Zoro but abandoned it midway in favor of using Jigoku no Manton Vise against Hajrudin.[4] This is called Destructive 1,000-Ton Vise in the VIZ Manga and the Funimation adaptations.
  • Jigoku no Manton Vise (地獄のマンtトン・ヴァイス, Jigoku no Manton Vaisu?, literally meaning "10,000 Ton Vise of Hell"): One thousand times heavier and more destructive version of Jutton Vise. While performing this move, he uses his unique shield to increase its power. It was first seen used against Hajrudin and was capable of shattering the bones in Hajrudin's forearms and legs, as well as crushing the ground beneath Hajrudin, but nonetheless was forced back by the giant's Gungnir, sending him flying into the Birdcage's sharp strings.[4] This is called Hellish 10,000-Ton Vise in the VIZ Manga and the Funimation adaptations.

Non-canon Techniques[]

  • Hyakuton Vise (Hyakuton Vaisu?, literally meaning "100 Ton Vise"): Ten times heavier and more destructive version of Jutton Vise, Machvise floats above his opponent then crashes down upon them with his shield. When Hajrudin attempted to still get up, Machvise used this move to cripple his left arm.[7] This is called 100-Ton Vise in the Funimation adaptations.
