The Toshi Toshi no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to manipulate the ages of people or objects, making them an Age Manipulation Human (年齢自在人間, Nenrei Jizai Ningen?).[2] As part of an experiment, Jaygarcia Saturn administered an extract of the fruit to Jewelry Bonney when she was an infant.[3][4]

Etymology[]

  • Toshi (年, 歳?) is Japanese for "age" or "year".

Strengths and Weaknesses[]

The main strength of the fruit is that it allows the user to freely manipulate the aging process of anything, including themself, other people, animals and objects. A unique effect of this ability is that the years the user steals from people are manifested in the form of sparkling jewelry and shapes.

The user can employ this power to disguise themself, as well as cripple opponents by rapidly aging their intended targets into their senior years or regressing them into small, weak children.[5] As such, this ability is noted to be extremely powerful because it merely needs an instance of physical contact (directly or through an user-wielded object) for its effects to apply. Even people with knowledge of Haki, such as Marine Vice Admirals, will become helpless if they end up falling to an age regression. Meanwhile, objects can corrode and eventually disintegrate into dust following a rapid progression of their time, giving the fruit further utility as a way to easily break into sealed off locations.

Bonney Ability Backfire

Bonney alters the Straw Hats' ages.

Any target whose bodily age has been altered by this power still retains all of their memories and cognitive abilities, as shown by the Marines and Bonney herself acting the same as normal, regardless of the age their body is showing them to be (though targets that have been reduced to toddlers have a tendency to cry as such). In addition, any markings or bodily modifications the target may have will not be affected by this power, as Jinbe still retained his scar around his left eye after being turned into a child by this ability, and Vegapunk retained his sliced-off upper head and attached structure.[6][7] Similarly, the progress of any disease the target has will not change if they are turned into an older version of their present self, even if they were likely to die long before reaching that age.[3]

Luffy And Bonney Fight Together

Bonney mimics the Awakened Form and powers of a Mythical Zoan.

The true strength of the fruit is that the user can transform into any possible future forms while aging themselves or others forward in time, regardless of physical limitations. The user can, with enough imagination, warp their body around to attain the forms of muscular warriors, different race, or even a different Devil Fruit class, notably the Awakened Form of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika of the Zoan category, if they are somehow able to envision it as an actual possibility. Children in particular are implied to highly benefit from this specific application of the fruit's powers, thanks to their highly imaginative and impressionable minds.

The fruit's main weakness is that its aging effects, when applied to living things, are temporary, meaning victims will eventually revert to their rightful age at some point. While the user can remain in their adult form for long periods of time and even while knocked out, it has to be continuously maintained; overexertions, such as intense battles, can dispell the self-applied effect and revert back to their real age [8]. It is unknown if the user has any sort of control over the duration of their ability's effect or if they are capable of immediately reversing it after a prior application. Additionally, there appears to be a category of targets immune to the fruit's ability; for yet-unknown reasons, Bonney could not use her ability on Jaygarcia Saturn.[4]

While the fruit allows the user to transform into any future as long as they can imagine it, the more the user is aware of the reality, the narrower the future possibility becomes; thus, futures based on faith will be weakened by doubts. A clever enough enemy can exploit this weakness by psychologically tormenting the user and feeding into their hesitations.[4]

Aside from this, the user suffers the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses. It is implied that submerging the user might cause the Devil Fruit's effects to be nullified, or at least take away enough of the user's energy to maintain them active. Bonney reverted to her true age while she was swept up by the sea before being rescued by the Straw Hat Pirates.[9][10] Notably, the user's clothes will not change in accord with their modified age, unlike how it usually happens with other Devil Fruit powers.

In the anime, the user glows pink while using their powers. The manga, meanwhile, has no other visual indication of the ability being employed besides the obvious physical changes that come with different ages.

Usage[]

Bonney as Conney
Bonney's elderly transformation.

Bonney mainly uses her ability to maintain the appearance of a woman in her early 20s in public. By shifting her apparent age up or down, she is able to fool people unaware of her powers into believing that she is somebody other than herself. She has been shown doing this in order to pretend to be related to someone (like how she did at the Sabaody Archipelago, by lying to Charlos about being Roronoa Zoro's little sister), steal food or to infiltrate restricted locations, all under the guise of someone else.

Bonney and Conney

Bonney successfully imitating Conney's age.

At first, Bonney had trouble figuring out how her fruit worked, and needed some time to master her new abilities. By using Queen Conney as a model, Bonney quickly learned how to alter her own appearance into that of an elderly woman, which was enough to fool many onlookers, including her own father. During the period of time where she was supervised by Alpha, Bonney was instructed by Conney to keep her abilities a secret just in case. This would later prove an useful decision to allow Bonney to escape the World Government's watch.

Bonney Beats Alpha

Bonney mimicking Nika's powers.

For combat, Bonney tends to employ her abilities on enemies by changing their age to extreme highs or lows, making them too old or young to engage in battle. Bonney is also able to tap into alternate futures with her forward-aging techniques, in case said futures provide a physical boost to her normal abilities. Thanks to her own vivid imagination and the legends her father used to tell her, Bonney can somehow mimic even the powers of Nika, a holy figure, by shapeshifting herself into a future form that is capable of inflating her arms and using them for attacks, akin to the effects of Luffy's Gear 3.

Like many Devil Fruit users, Bonney can channel her abilities through foreign objects that she currently wields. She has been seen utilizing age-changing effects through both a pipe weapon and a pistol. This complements Bonney's skillset really well, as she has no dedicated weapon and tends to pick up whatever she can find around for combat.

Techniques[]

Distortion Future

Distortion Future.

  • Distortion Future (歪んだ未来ディストーションフューチャー, Disutōshon Fyūchā?): Bonney ages herself up into a possible future version, gaining a large and muscular physique, similar her adopted father's, and becoming physically stronger as a result (enough to destroy metallic walls with ease). Bonney can also apply this technique to others like, for example, how she did to Monkey D. Luffy at Egghead's scrapyard, turning him into a 70-year-old man who was stated to come from a "different future".[6] This move was properly named during Bonney's confrontation with Vegapunk.[11] In the VIZ manga and Crunchyroll subs, this is called Distorted Future.
  • Distortion Future: Nika Mitaina Mirai (ゆがんだ未来ディストーションフューチャー “ニカ”みたいな未来, Disutōshon Fyūchā: Nika Mitaina Mirai?, literally meaning "Distortion Future: A Future Like Nika"): Bonney ages herself up into a possible future version, gaining a physique she imagined like Nika, and being able to stretch and enlarge her arm similar to both Nika’s rubbery properties and the Gear 3 form of the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Bonney also utilized Nika's power to gain a muscular physique that allowed her to enlarge her arm and compress her fist, which follows the same concept as Gear 4. This was first used against Alpha.[12] In the VIZ manga, this is called Distorted Future: Nika-Like Future.
Bonney Engages Nusjuro

Kyojin Mitaina Mirai.

  • Distortion Future: Kyojin Mitaina Mirai (ゆがんだ未来ディストーションフューチャー 巨人みたいな未来, Disutōshon Fyūchā: Kyojin Mitaina Mirai?, literally meaning "Distortion Future: A Future Like a Giant"): Bonney ages herself up into a possible future version, gaining an incredibly large physique akin to that of a giant. This was first used against Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro.[13] By Bonney's own account, this form cannot be maintained for very long.[8] In the VIZ manga, this is called Distorted Future: Giant-Like Future.
  • Distortion Future: Atashi Ga Ichiban Jiyuna Mirai (ゆがんだ未来ディストーションフューチャー あたしが一番自由な未来, Disutōshon Fyūchā: Atashi Ga Ichiban Jiyūna Mirai?, literally meaning "Distortion Future: A Future Where I am Most Free"): Bonney ages herself up into a possible future version, gaining a transformation akin to that of the awakened form of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, as Luffy described his own form as having the most freedom.[14] This form is very taxing, as Bonney cannot maintain this form for long and is left completely exhausted afterwards.[15] In the VIZ manga, this is called Distorted Future: Future Where I'm The Most Free.
Bonney Strikes Luffy

Tokudai!! "Nika no Punch".

  • Tokudai!! "Nika no Punch" (特大!! "ニカのパンチ", Tokudai!! "Nika no Panchi"?, literally meaning "Extra Large!! 'Nika Punch'"): Bonney inflates her fist and covers it with Armament Haki before launching it forward in a punch. This technique essentially follows the same concept as Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun using Gear 3, having seen and copied the way Luffy utilized Gear 5 in his fight against Jaygarcia Saturn, with the only slight difference being that Bonney's Armament Haki does not cover all the way down to her arm. This technique was first used to enhance Luffy's attack on Marcus Mars on Egghead.[16] In the VIZ manga, this is called Super-Size!! Nika Punch.
  • Kaiho no Nika Punch (解放のニカパンチ, Kaihō no Nika Panchi?, literally meaning "Nika Punch of Liberation"): A combination attack performed by Luffy using Gear 5 and Bonney while assuming her Nika form. While assuming his gigantic, inflated body, Luffy attacks the enemy from every direction with a barrage of Armament Haki-enhanced punches, while Bonney strikes the enemy right down the middle with her Tokudai!! "Nika no Punch". This was first used against Jaygarcia Saturn. In the VIZ manga, this is called Liberation Nika Punch.[17]
Toshi Tsuki

Toshi Tsuki used on Vegapunk.

  • Toshi Tsuki (跡死トシ突き, Toshi Tsuki?, literally meaning "Trace Death Thrust"): While wielding a staff weapon or another object, Bonney thrusts it into a target, aging them into a younger version of themselves. The target's lost years are manifested in the form of glittering jewels of various shapes that are expelled from their body and then scattered around. Bonney first used this on Vegapunk, turning him into a helpless child.[7][18] The name of the technique is a pun on toshitsuki (年月) meaning "months and years". In the VIZ manga and Crunchyroll subs, this is called Age Skewer.
  • Oil Shock (老化衝撃オイルショック, Oiru Shokku?, literally meaning "Aging Shock"): Bonney applies her aging effects to a metallic object, corroding and then breaking it. She first used this to destroy a door lock leading to a room in Vegapunk's laboratory.[19] The name of the technique is a pun on 老いる (oiru, meaning "to age"?). In the VIZ manga and Crunchyroll subs, this is called Oiled Shock.
Near Death Experience

NDE used on a Marine.

  • NDE (臨死体験エヌディーイー, Enu Dī Ī?, literally meaning "Near-Death Experience"): Bonney pulls out a pistol and fires a projectile against the enemy. Instead of getting injured, the target rapidly ages until they turn into a skeleton before immediately reverting to their initial state, which may cause psychological trauma to them. Bonney first used this move against a group of Marine soldiers.[20] NDE is an acronym for "near-death experience".

History[]

While Bonney was a baby in Mary Geoise, Jaygarcia Saturn performed an experiment on her to test whether a Devil Fruit could be given to an infant via an extract. While Bonney acquired the power, the fruit itself was rendered useless.[4] Following Sorbet Kingdom's Solo Revolution at age 6, Bonney subconsciously accessed the fruit's power in the church she was confined in, leading to herself becoming confused at its power, as well as her adoptive father mistaking Bonney for her late mother Ginny.[3] It was only during the Egghead Incident did Saturn reveal to Bonney how he granted her said power.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Among named fruits, this one currently has the longest gap between when its power was first shown and when it was named, at 15 years, 5 months and 2 weeks. 597 chapters were released between its usage debut and when it was named in SBS.
  • The Toshi Toshi no Mi is similar to Kuma's Nikyu Nikyu no Mi and Big Mom's Soru Soru no Mi, being able to extract and sublimate intangible aspects of a living target, making them tangible (Bonney with age, Kuma with pain/fatigue and memories, and Big Mom with souls).
  • The aging and decaying power of this fruit is similar to that of the Juku Juku no Mi, which can age objects and people at will. The main difference is that the Juku Juku no Mi’s effects are irreversible and can only age things forward, while the Toshi Toshi no Mi’s effects are temporary and can age things both forward and backwards.
  • The Toshi Toshi no Mi, alongside the Mira Mira no Mi, is one of the only known Devil Fruits to have shown the ability to mimic the powers of another Devil Fruit. Specifically, upon using Distortion Future: Nika Mitaina Mirai, Bonney was shown using an ability of the Gomu Gomu no Mi.
  • Coincidentally, Bonney's first usage of a Gear 3-like Nika power in combat using Distortion Future parallels with Luffy's first usage of Gear 3 in combat, as both pirates unveiled the power in battle against a Cipher Pol agent.
    • Interestingly, Bonney's own usage of "Gear 3" is visually consistent with Luffy's across same time periods. Two years ago, the technique involved Bonney gigantifying her whole arm (much like Luffy's pre-timeskip version of the move), while during the present time, she merely gigantifies her forearm and fist, even including a blackening effect that Luffy often applies to his own modern Gear 3. This could be attributed to Bonney observing Luffy's use of Armament Haki-enhanced inflated fists in his Gear 5 battle against Saturn.
  • Interestingly, Bonney's Distortion Future technique follows the same concept as Vegapunk's theory on how Devil Fruits are manifestations of the possibility for human evolution, with all the different powers representing the many branches for humanity's future, brought into existence by human hope and desire: thoughts along the lines of "if only I could do this" or "if only I could be like that".
