Vivre Cards, also known as the "Paper of Life" (命の紙, Inochi no Kami?, VIZ and Funimation dub: "Life Paper"), are a special form of paper made in the New World.[2]

Overview[]

Vivre Card Usage

How Vivre Cards are used.

A Vivre Card is a piece of paper made from a person's fingernail clipping. At first glance, it is indistinguishable from ordinary paper. However, it is completely waterproof and fireproof, though it can be torn. The pieces can then be given to a friend whom one would be separated from.[2]

The torn pieces will point to and move towards each other no matter where they are in the world, allowing one to always be able to tell which direction the other person is in.[2] However, it does not tell the distance or about any obstacles that might be in the way.

True to the name "paper of life", the life force of the owner, the person whose fingernail the Vivre Card was made from, is reflected on the paper. If the life force of the owner is weakening, the card will begin to burn away.[2] It will grow back to its original size if the person recovers, but will disintegrate completely if they die.[3]

Aside from a Log Pose, a Vivre Card is one of the only methods of navigating the Grand Line. Unlike a Log Pose, which locks on to the magnetic field of an island, a Vivre Card can direct the user towards the location of a specific person.[2]

List of Vivre Cards[]

  • Portgas D. Ace: The very first Vivre Card piece was received in Arabasta to help Luffy find his brother.[1] It had diminished quite significantly due to Ace being captured and in danger of execution.[2][4] Upon rescue from the execution scaffold, the card was fully restored, but when Ace took a direct hit from Sakazuki through his stomach and died, it completely turned to ash.[5] This Vivre Card was created for Ace on Onigashima by Yamato, who kept a piece of it and gave the rest to Ace. Yamato's piece also burned away when Ace died at Marineford.[6]
Vivre Soul

  • Charlotte Linlin: This card was received from Lola of the Rolling Pirates. She gives Nami a Vivre Card of her "mama" and signs it in case they need her assistance in the New World.[2] Here the importance of the Vivre Card is fully explained. This Vivre Card contains her powerful soul energy, which radiates to such an extent that all the Homies would not attack Nami when she took out the paper.[7] Because of the potential trouble should an enemy get their hands on such a Vivre Card, along with potentially confusing the Homies on whom to better serve between Big Mom's Vivre Card holder and Big Mom herself, not even the children of Big Mom are allowed to carry Linlin's Vivre Card now.[8] While this card had been taken by Amande,[9] it was later revealed that Nami had secretly cut it in half, with Nami still possessing half of Linlin's Vivre Card.[10] Once Linlin herself was in the vicinity giving orders, the Homies took her orders over Nami via the Vivre Card.[11]
  • Silvers Rayleigh: After the trouble they caused on the Sabaody Archipelago, Rayleigh gives each member of the Straw Hat Pirates a Vivre Card to find him once their ship has been coated.[12] After the Summit War, he leaves his own piece with Shakky while he goes to see Luffy, so that the rest of the Straw Hats would still be able to find their way back to Sabaody.[13][14] Shakky later gives the piece to the Straw Hats as they are about to leave Sabaody Archipelago for Fish-Man Island, because Luffy, who had not yet shown up at the time, would be following it.[15]
  • Banshee: While setting up Oliva, Banshee was sold as a slave to infiltrate his market. As part of this infiltration, Ace was planning to track her down with her Vivre Card, identifying the location where Oliva kept his slaves.[23]

Unknown Individuals[]

  • Jack received a Vivre Card from Kurozumi Kanjuro that allowed him to reach Zou, which would not have been possible otherwise. It is unknown whose life this Card is linked to, though it was most likely Raizo.[24]

Non-Canon[]

Translation and Dub Issues[]

  • "Vivre" is the French word for "to live".
  • Some translations refer to it as "Biblicard", possibly due to its Japanese pronunciation "Biburukādo".
