Yamamoto Luffy is one of the three protagonists of the One Piece in Love spin-off series.

Appearance

Luffy is a teenage boy with short black hair that two bits sprouting from the top of his head. He typically wears a high school uniform consisting of a white button-down dress shirt and blue pants, and more casual clothing in his free time.

Personality

Luffy is a fairly timid person, much more so than his namesake. He is very easygoing, becoming friends with Nakatsugawa Usopp after their first encounter and enduring the teasing he gets from his classmates. His easygoingness is so extreme that he was willing to repeatedly drink vinegar at Usopp's suggestion that it would turn him into a Rubber Human.

He has a fear of animals, though was able to partially get over it with Usopp's help.

Relationships

Koyama Nami

Luffy and Nami are close friends, having bonded over both having One Piece names. At the beginning of One Piece in Love, she is essentially the only person who doesn't tease him over his name.

Nami has a crush on Luffy, though he is unaware of it and treats her platonically.

Nakatsugawa Usopp

Usopp is a classmate and friend of Luffy's, who seeked him out due to their similar One Piece names. Usopp is obsessed with One Piece and frequently makes references to it, dragging Luffy into his antics due to his name.

History

Past

Due to his name matching Monkey D. Luffy's, Yamamoto Luffy has frequently been bullied, with other students jokingly treating him like a One Piece character.

When he was young, he went to the same preschool as Morishita Yukie.

When he and Koyama Nami first met, they became fast friends due to both their names being One Piece characters.

One Piece in Love

One day while they were leaving school, Luffy and Nami were approached by Nakatsugawa Usopp, who introduced himself as also having a One Piece name. The three students spent the afternoon together, and Luffy added Usopp on Line before he left. The next day, Luffy was being bullied by his classmates when he learned that Usopp had started a "Pirate Club" and listed Luffy as the captain; while he was initially shocked, he was ultimately saved from the bullies by Usopp.

As a member of the Pirate Club, Luffy grows closer to Nami and Usopp, and is frequently involved in Usopp's antics and Nami's attempts at moving their relationship romantically.

• Luffy has a "kira kira name", or "sparkling name", a type of modern Japanese name that makes use of atypical pronunciations or meanings. This usually involves the use of kanji that are pronounced in a unique manner, which in Luffy's case is the kanji Kaizoku-Ō (海賊王^?) pronounced as Rufi (ルフィ^?).
  • The underlying kanji in Luffy's name, Kaizoku-Ō, means "Pirate King".
