Zangirimaru[3] is a former prisoner of Udon's prisoner mines.[1] In the anime credits and closed captions, he was named Jo (ジョー, Jō?).[4]
Appearance[]
Zangirimaru is a man of average height with blond hair that forms large bangs around his face and is tied in a ponytail at the back. At Udon, he wore a standard prisoner outfit.
In the anime, he wears a light blue and blue striped kimono with a white tasuki after discarding the prison uniform.[2]
Personality[]
Zangirimaru has lost all hope and sees no reason to attempt to escape from the prison into the Wano Country ruled by Orochi and Kaidou.[1] In the anime, he also showed himself to be a rather restless person, which forced Hyougoro to calm him down.[2]
Abilities and Powers[]
Zangirimaru has some physical strength as he managed to restrain Monkey D. Luffy together with other prisoners.[1]
Weapons[]
In the anime, Zangirimaru wields a sword.[2]
History[]
Past[]
Sometime after the death of Kouzuki Oden, Zangirimaru was imprisoned in the Prisoner Mine in Udon for rebellion against Kaidou.[1]
Wano Country Saga[]
Wano Country Arc[]
When Luffy started a rebellion in the Prisoner Mine, Zangirimaru and other prisoners obeyed Babanuki's order to restrain him. However, they released Luffy when threatened by Kikunojo.[1]
Major Battles[]
- Zangirimaru, Hanji, Hareji, and other prisoners vs. Monkey D. Luffy
- Zangirimaru, Hareji, Hanji, Hyougoro, Cho, Yatappe, Omasa and Tsunagoro vs Juki, Goki and Gifters group
Anime and Manga Differences[]
In the anime, Zangirimaru reappears during the Onigashima raid with Hareji and Hanji. The trio begin to feel anxious before landing at the island but Hyougoro advises them to relax. Zangirimaru also states that he admires the Straw Hat Pirates and the way they work.[2]
Later, when Luffy and Zoro were unable to get to the rooftop, Zangirimaru, along with Hyougoro's team, set out to confront Goki, Juki, and the group of the Gifters. He is very surprised when Hyougoro starts laughing, but Hyougoro explains that he doesn't feel like they will fail as Luffy is with them.[5]
Trivia[]
- His name may be derived from zangiri atama (散切り頭}?, "cropped head") referring to a Japanese man who adopted a western hairstyle during the Meiji Period.
